I Tried The Ford Mach E.... Is It Better Than A Tesla? 

Shelbers, just to clarify, Model 3 has had the automatic trunk since 2020. 🙏🏻❤️

A coworker of mine has a Mach E and the one big issue he's had was the software messing up. He's taken it in twice for that. The other common issues with his car (and apparently other Mach E's) is the door won't open sometimes due to a software glitch.

I've test driven a Mustang Mach-E and it was an exceptional experience. The only thing I would say that was a con was the relatively small rear view mirrors. The sound system was probably one of the best surprises of the entire vehicle

As a Mach-E owner, I was curious to hear your thoughts, so thanks for the video! :-) Interesting you said it looks a bit more traditional because, man, people gawk at this car when I drive past like nothing else I've owned. I rented a Model 3 for a week, and I disagree about the space. The Model 3 is packed brilliantly as a sedan, but the Mach-E has more passenger space and more cargo capacity in the back (even if not by a ton). It has WAY more storage than a typical gas powered sedan, and beats the tar out of a similarly sized gas powered crossover.

hi Shelby, the Model 3 now has a power trunk, and you can remotely open it from the app. there have been lots of upgrades since you purchased your model 3. :)

A great video. I am considering an electric car. The Tesla 3 looks amazing, but it seems too small for my family and the Model Y is just too expensive. The Mach-E seems to hit the sweet spot.

Shelby, I appreciate your dedication on making these videos on EVs. I enjoy your cars reviews as they focus on common (daily) things I would look into in any vehicle.

This is why Tesla Superchargers is so superior because they can just break even the cost or charging, while other EV that depends on Third party charger station, those charging stations company needs to profit, hence the high price per kilowatt.

I bought the Mach E in July and love it! No issues so far. Ford just did an update to allow faster charging to 90% but tails off after to preserve the battery

The Chevy Bolt and Volt have the charging port in the front also, definitely prefer that because you usually pull into a parking spot rather then back in.

Would be cool to see your take on a real road trip with non-Tesla. Your charging experience here sounds uncommon, typically hear of most of the stalls not working and when they do taking a bunch of tires to get going

Great review Shelby!! I work at a Ford dealer and took a Mach E home for the weekend. I liked the way the car drove it Is fast enough for most people. Ford has the advantage of manufacturing / build quality, something that Tesla struggles with. Tesla is better in tech and the charging network. As a car guy, most of us agree that Ford should not have used the "Mustang" name, and just called it the Mach E and remove the horses.

It’s funny from state that it is dark majority of the winter some vehicles nowadays have LEDs in the front and regular Sandy lights in the tailgates what’s vice versa. And believe me you can tell from LEDs versus the standard lights that come with stock but not that great. Trust me who somebody drives to work and come home in the dark you notice and a lot of the roads are dry van or no street lights it’s pitch black and you can tell when highlights and taillights have a standard stock lights they’re terrible replace it with LEDs including your turn signals and your fog lights and your parking lights so it’s easy to be spot. Do it for yourself and do it for the people on the road it makes a lot easier to see you from front and behind. Therefore you can tell there’s a vehicle in front of you and behind you and coming onto you.

I’m considering going electric. How annoying is the whole charging situation? Im in & out of the gas station in 10 minutes so does the 30 minutes feel like an inconvenience?

I think it's a nice car. I think Ford needs to make better software and a better charging curve before I'd consider this over a Tesla. Though I will say the more traditional interior is a good thing for those who want something familiar but want to switch to electric.

I owned this car for a month and a half. It was the best car ive ever owned UNTIL ford could never fix the issues with the MCU or all of my issues with charging. I was stranded for 4 hours trying to start a charge. If ford resolved all the issues I had I would still have it today.

My issue with Ford's Mach-E is the charging network. The Tesla network is just so good at the moment, and owning an EV that's critical right now. Based on most reviews, the Mach-E is better than the Model Y, but the charging network is where you could have an issue.

Ford’s QC is better than Tesla. The Mach E looks better to me than any Teslas tbh. And the final point for Ford is that they actually come out with cars they announce. The only win for Tesla is their charging network currently. That’s unmatched.

Co-Pilot 360 and Tesla Autopilot are 2 different things. Ford’s version of autopilot is called BlueCruise and is hands free driving. Co-Pilot 360 is a 360 degree view, something that tesla doesn’t offer at all. As a previous owner of a Model 3 I wad expecting you to review the suspension of the mach-e and compare it to the terrible one of Model 3 or Y.

As cool as any other EV may come out to be. Every EV that is not Tesla will struggle to replace a gas car, simple because of the fact of the infrastructure of charging stations. Tesla has that built in while every other company depends on third party stations

At the entry level electric car point the Tesla Model 3 is still the best value and with all the options you get as standard, it will still dominate there at that value. The only closest thing that comes close would be the Kia EV6. I’m not sure if the Mustang Mach E is worth the money plus it gets more expensive as you add options to it. However the Germans and other car manufacturers are slowly catching up and at Tesla Model S pricing, you have the Mercedes EQS, Porsche Taycan, BMW iX4 and Audi e-tron GT all of which are compelling and better options in terms of driving experience and aesthetic quality so I’d probably lean towards the Taycan if I was after performance but the supercharging network is what also makes Tesla compelling option and the range you can get out of them which is superb in terms of efficiency. Great review. But I don’t think it’s fair that you compared your model 3 to this. Like you stated in the beginning, the Mach E compares to the model Y.

Sitting there for an hr to let my car charge just seems crazy, i will never understand why people would want to do that!! But i love hearing Shelbys opinion on anything!

I am a big Tesla fan as well, however when shopping my wife and I both agreed the Mustang had much better build quality. It was honestly the dealer that killed the order for us.

Tesla model Y has an automatic lift gate.

I didn't know any Teslas didn't have automatic opening trunks. I drive a 2015 S so I figured later vehicles would have kept this feature.

Your videos are so well done, and the content is always well presented. Your review is perfect. There are tons of reviews that are all the same, but you hit the high points about which I think most consumers care.

As a Mach-E Owner I can say that Tesla has far better software and Ford has a LONG way to go software / app wise. The app gives improper data all the time, you can not get accurate trip usage and the car gives only basic info. I am sure there are going to be lots of upgrades but even their promise of OTA Updates has had lots of issues. I've yet to get a single update OTA. I love the Mach-E and chose if over Tesla mostly due to looks and the fit / finish. Also there is an update for the charging slowing down at 80% that is currently dealer only but eventually might be rolled out OTA?

I just rented a Tesla Model 3 and it was my first time driving an all electric vehicle. I personally hate Tesla’s OS and would much prefer CarPlay as I am an iPhone user and basically live inside the iOS ecosystem. I also hate having to ALWAYS back into a charging station. Wish they made charge ports in the front and back for ease of use. I also found the model 3 to be just as loud when driving compared to my Mazda gas vehicle. I was surprised the audio dampening wasn’t that great. I also did not like no physical buttons to interface with everything, so I like the features the Mach-E has (checks more of the boxes for me). One thing I quickly learned was that the standard charge of about 80% battery was around 200-220 miles and NOT what I would want. I think I will only look at an EV that can do 300 miles or more which is on par with my Mazda that gets around 330-350 on a full tank of gas. Of course, the Tesla was fun to drive and almost felt video-game like, but it wasn’t cutting it for me. I find the designs of teslas to be mediocre and not really a fan of how they look. I think the Mach-e fits more of what I like in a car now that I have some experience with EV’s.

In my honest opinion, the Mach E may be an electric mustang, but the Mustang spirit lies in its V8. But that’s just me, lol. Amazing video as always Shelby! Love the awesome content you do!

Have you seen the Ford Robo Taxis in Miami? Wow!

I got this car over a year ago and I've been extremely happy with it. I bought the 300-mile range version expecting it to go only 250 like my tesla but I consistently get over 360-400 miles in range which is fantastic. The build quality and interior are far better in the Ford than the Tesla. The Model S is still cheap feeling despite being $30k more. Her test vehicle is the base version, which is still fine, but the new software update allows it to charge even faster and increases the range and higher percent cap. I have nothing bad to say about this car even though there are minor details such as the Games and Netflix built in, but I don't think anyone should be watching TV while driving, regardless of autopilot. It's quite rare that I would wait to charge to even need to watch something for entertainment anyways. I think the huge deciding factor for a lot of people is Android and Apple car play is great on the Ford where it just doesn't exist with Tesla which is the worst mistake they could have made. Being able to be at home, look up a restaurant or event, make reservations and immediately start the car and go with navigation already set is something I use every day.

I prefer to classify it as a Cross-Over vehicle. I don’t like the Start/Stop button. It should not be necessary on an EV. But the second display is a welcome sight. Check out the beautiful GT version.

Mach E gets the additional $7.5k federal tax rebate Tesla doesn’t have and Tesla Model Y is 58k instead of 52k

Just bought the Mach e last weekend after test driving the Tesla model 3 and model Y. I had a not great but likely non typical experience with the Model 3 and it really turned me off. I got to the Tesla facility to test drive and the car was "updating" when I get in. The Tesla employee told me to hold down on the two buttons on the steering wheel to stop the update, I did and nothing happened, kept trying to update but now it appeared to be frozen. After about 5 min, he then starts looking for some battery cable to disconnect under the back seat and can not get to it so he went inside and grabbed a computer, I assume the computer connects to the car somehow and he was able to stop the install process, but then the car started to update again, and he went back to the laptop computer and stopped it again. I was then able to start the test drive. I was not use to the one pedal driving so that threw me off a bit but I got use to it. The thing that bugged me was that EVERYTHING is done on the terminal in the tesla as far as I could tell. Volume control, air control, ect.. As I was driving the terminal blacked out for about 30 seconds for no apparent reason. With everything controlled by the terminal, having it black out was not a great feeling. The positive about the tesla was that it was very quick. Quicker that than the Mach e but that is really just a novelty as you don't really need to be that quick all the time. The seats in the Tesla are not my style as they are very minimalist and much more of a bucket that I would like. I have been driving a 2017 Subaru outback. Then I drove the Mach e Premium extended range. I instantly felt comfortable with the typical buttons on the steering wheel, cruise control, wiper controls volume control, ect. The large screen has a ton of options like the tesla and separates the screen for climate control and other controls. Telsa models are not very unique any more and I really dislike the Tesla Y look as it looks like an old school computer mouse. The only really nice looking Tesla to me is the Model S.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the 2021 or 2022 Tesla model 3 and Model Y now has.a standard lift gate? Your model 3 must be an older version. Also I thought the Mach E can't change lane on it's own 😒.

On the charging, Tesla Superchargers rates vary from station to station even fairly close by. Some can be quite cheap and some higher. With Electrify America and EV owner who is using it will pay the $4 a mont to get the 31¢ per kWh. One charging session will cover the cost.

Since late 2020 the powered lift gate feature has become standard for Tesla Model 3.

This was a great review! I felt the same about it, its about one notch lower than the Tesla, but its a HUGE advancement on what other car companies are doing to compete with Tesla, so that is cool! I love competition!

Thanks, Shelby! A good overview. I've driven a Tesla for over 5 years/70K miles, but I test drove a Mach-E the other day and quickly concluded that its BlueCruise is better than Tesla's AP. On major interstates you don't even have to have your hands on the wheel, so the car doesn't "nag" you to give the wheel some "torque." It doesn't suffer from phantom braking, or ping-ponging between lanes -like started to happen way too often in my Tesla after some of the most recent OTA updates. My one complaint with the Mach-E is that it needs higher kWh and a more robust charging curve from 350 kW DCFC. Gotta improve that, Ford!

This Mustang Mach E is a lot better looking than tesla..Also the fit and finish of the Mustang Is great...Really like a real car..where the tesla is not..If this wasnt a MUSTANG it wouldnt look as GREAT as it does...DEFINITELY the MUSTANG of the FUTURE.

Good job! Great video! I ordered 2022 Mach-E GT performance... my issue with Tesla is their parts distribution... in the collision business... a Tesla can take months to repair due lack of parts availability and sending incorrect parts... This a great move for Ford... and hopefully, it slingshots them toward competing with Tesla in the EV market. I was hoping the CyberTruck would surface by now... Looking forward to BMW EV's next, my daily driver is a 2020 750i M Sport... and they claim to have an electric i7... in the near future. My thoughts... when, a 500 mile affordable EV is built... you will see more interest... it will most likely be a truck or large SUV due to the batteries needed.

We had a Mustang Mach-E on order, but after more research and hearing some of the horror stories from the Mach-E Facebook groups we cancelled it. The flimsy manual opening charging door can open too far and dent your fender, it has also been known to open in car washes and get ripped off. None of the cameras on the Mach-E will record like a Tesla does in sentry mode. You only get 5 seconds of full power because the batteries can overheat. It does not have a power tilt/telescoping steering wheel. The portrait orientation of the touchscreen has impeded on some driver's knees. The tires are not very wide for an expensive car like this, and when we ordered our GT performance edition it only came with summer tires, that's great but we have winter as well here in Wisconsin! Originally, they had GT specific colors, then the next model year they let any model use those same colors. A bit of a slap in the face for first year owners who thought they had GT exclusive colors! And I would be very wary of buying a used Mach-E after seeing a number of owners posting about charging the batteries to 100%, when it was pointed out that doing so degrades the batteries faster the owner's responses were "I don't care, I'm not keeping it long enough to worry about that". So, buyer beware on the used Mach-E! And the number one reason we cancelled our Mach-E was the dealer experience! We test drove a Mach-E GT Performance Edition that was $70K, during the test drive the salesperson told us their mark-up STARTS at $20K over MSRP - making it now a $90K car! Sorry, nope, not going to happen! I was told in one of the Facebook groups that to get anything close to a Mustang Mach-E would cost approximately $30K more than a Mach-E - which is simply not true. I'm not saying the Mach-E is a bad car, but for us these added up to a pass on this vehicle.

I absolutely love the design of the Ford Mustang Mach E! Looking forward to their lightning that'll be out on the roads soon. Maybe you'll get to review that and compare against the cybertruck?

Another highly informative but brief review. Shelby, in the future if you ever get the time you might want to review the new Hyundia Ioniq 5. Many EV reviewers are claiming it's a game changer for the entire EV sector and the auto industry overall.

To me, the Mach E is in a completely different stratosphere, aesthetically speaking. The Mach E looks like it was designed by a team of car guys who actually care about looks. Just by looking at it, you can see that each line was designed with intention, where they carefully considered the Mustang's heritage and tradition, but also came up with something new and refreshing. And the Model 3.... looks like it was designed by AI lol. But to each their own.

I'm a traditional Ford person and I love electric vehicles. My family and I have talked about it and the (mustang)- mache is an absolute no go.

As a valet, I drive everything and I would say...out of all electric cars, I like the ride of the Ford the most.

Mach E is quite ugly. Returned mine after 3 weeks, it has a HUGE loss of range in cold temperatures. Went with a Model 3 and it is a different league.

2 hours to get to 100% damn, I’ll keep my Tesla. Plus the price for charging…yea, I’m not worried about Tesla competition

Shelby, I think now all Tesla models have power liftgates. I really wanted that for my Tesla Model 3 2018. In China Tesla does offer an OEM power liftgate kit but not here yet.

The Model 3 is a sedan, so most sedans don’t have a motorized trunk. The obvious difference between the Mach E, and the Model Y is the vertical screen position in the Mach E is wrong, especially when infotainment comes to the Mach E in the future.

Wow just the fact that Tesla’s superchargers are half the price makes a HUGE difference!
