Isn't it supposed to take two weeks before your body takes get used to it? Doing it for a week seems dumb af given everything ( not much) I know about it.
@@Empedocles449 The time to get into ketosis varies between individuals, generally 2-4 days. Some people (I'm one) can get into it in 24-30 hours especially if you weren't going crazy with the carbs on your cheat day. The keto "flu" also varies, whether you get it, for how long, and how bad it us. Will didnt seem to get it, which is good. But yeah doing it for a week is kinda silly unless you just want to see what it feels like.
For me, it takes about 48 hours for my appetite to regulate back down. But it can definitely take a couple weeks to actually figure out what that means for you and what to do about it. You might try a meal and figure out the portion size, then try it again next week, and that portion is now way excessive. Or you might think you've got everything planned, but get caught out without a lunch one day and have to eat out, without knowing about Subway rotisserie chicken salads or Carl's Jr lettuce-wrap burgers. Or you might think you've got a recipe figured out, but realize after 3 weeks that your taco seasoning has 15g of cornstarch per packet and you've been going over your targets. Your body usually adapts faster than your lifestyle.
Greg Doucette Coach how long can someone build muscle in a calorie deficit? I mean after a point won't anyone end up looking a little too lean and with less muscle?
Gen unit 101 as Will have put it in one of the Q&As, he doesn’t want people to judge his content by the subs that he has, which is not such a big number, I reckon, but he also said that one day he will prolly open it to the public, just not now
I was 63 and a long distance swimmer who weighed 209 lbs.. Couldn't lose any of my fat no matter what I did. I give Keto a shot and dropped 31 pounds in 6 weeks. Two years latter and I'm at 183 and just swam 2 1/2 and 3 1/4 miles the last two days out. The thing that amazed me about getting off the sugar was my arthritis went away and I'm thinking with so much more clarity these days.
All you need is a calorie deficit, keto is just that, while it seems to keep people satiated. You don't really hit ketosis until you fast for about 24 hours, so keto is a misnomer, but it seems to help people lose weight. People who say they tried everything, usually forgot to try an actual calorie deficit.
Will, as someone that has been doing keto for over a year now (it's helped immensely with my PCOS and I've lost 91 pounds), I want to say thanks for doing this with an open mind and talking about it in an educated manner. I have seen countless content creators demonizing keto purely because they didn't feel well for the first week while transitioning. One week is certainly not enough to see the full benefits of keto, and is not enough time to get fat-adapted and feel well through everyday functioning and workouts, and you seemed to understand this. I'm glad you talked about the importance of electrolytes and didn't list your "transitory" symptoms as a con because you recognized that it's a normal part of the process. I'm not a hardcore keto-er that thinks everyone needs to do it, but I do like to see creators such as yourself going into it with the proper research for your audience. I feel like you gave it a very fair review. Thank you and keep doing you!
It's reviewed harshly because there is no scientific evidence that shows it has any inherent benefits while being highly restrictive and unsustainable for most. Sure, anyone can do it and lose weight, but the weight loss is occurring because you're creating a caloric deficit (which you can do with any diet), not because of anything inherently special about keto. It's a diet that unnecessarily restricts foods many people enjoy for no discernable reason.
@@nickbyrd1027 one of the main benefits is that the high amount of fat you eat keeps you satiated. so you feel full after a meal and are less likely to go snack. so while yes, the main way it makes you lose weight is through a caloric deficit, it makes attaining that caloric deficit much easier. speaking form experience, lost 110 lbs in a year, then switched to a Mediterranean diet for maintenance.
@@3500andrei of course fat keep you satiated. It has a lot of calories. But if you eat the same calories in the form of any other kind of food you will feel so satiated like that, if not even more.
I did Keto for about 6 months. Not something I’m in any rush to do again but it took me from looking like a broken man to thinking ‘hmm I’ve lost some weight I wonder what else I could achieve’ to full blown gym boy that has the best physique of his life, loves the journey and takes pride in himself and helps his friends to achieve their goals. Great way to learn restraint, restriction and can be a good intro for newbies
Did keto for 9 months a few years ago. Lost 95lbs. Gained it all back. Did it again to start lost 20lbs now I'm on CICO. Keto is great but you don't learn anything about a normal diet by doing keto and transitioning to a normal diet is so hard after
This format of fitness show is so unique and original. Does the fitness stuff. Then flips to a cooking show and legit shows how to cook to compliment it making dope ass food. Love these diet/program trials.
My mom started a keto diet like 2 months ago and she's lost almost 20 pounds. I'm so proud of her! She goes live on facebook and makes keto friendly food! Thank you for covering this diet Will, I was actually waiting for this one! You're my favorite fitness youtuber and I love your videos!
@@eyesack5824 keto is used to help people lose weight that can't do any kind of exercise. It is more about stabilized hormones than calorie in vs calorie out. But for someone that doesn't have an exercise problem it is about stabilized energy.
I dont lift. I dont train. I dont workout and have no intention to. I still watch every single one of your videos because god damn this comedy is just pure gold
As a pro-keto guy, I was worried going into this video because usually they'll say they're doing keto but do a bunch of things wrong and just be misinformed about the general logic of keto. But you were actually pretty well informed Will, I thought that was a very good representation of what a keto diet means and I thought you were very objective and smart in your takeaways.
You can still have donuts or other treats on keto if it’s not all the time. I’ve been doing keto for over a year and I eat cupcakes once every couple of weeks and I’m right back into ketosis the next day. And I’m doing it while losing weight.
Sharing a few bits of info that I found relevant when getting on Keto: - Trying Keto involves at least 6-10 weeks. Your body needs time to adjust it's machinery to the new fuel (mostly your powerhouses that need to go through several half-life times) - Don't go ham on MCT, especially at the start. Many folks get dizzy / lightheaded / nausea from it. Make sure to take it with a bunch of food and start off with small amounts. I've stopped using it all together. - Hunger vanishes pretty fast. No more insulin spikes after a meal, no more crashes, no more afternoon fatigue, etc etc.... Steady energy all day is bliss - Electrolytes are indeed a major thing, especially the first couple of weeks. Supplementation work, but home-made bonebroth is still my preference. - Weight loss is easy on keto. Putting it on means putting oil on your veggies, scrambling your eggs with 50g of butter, snacking on cheese, and so forth --> get creative with fattening up your foods.
@@jodolski That went away for me after 3 or 4 weeks. Granted, when walking past a waffle stand or such, can still draw attention due to the smell. I'm pretty convinced that sugar withdrawal isn't something to underestimate, perhaps even to be compared to kicking a drug habit. But each person is different, and perhaps it's hitting you harder? Hang in there... Those cravings and Pavlovian reactions fading are a big indicator that you're getting properly fat adapted. Meanwhile, I've gotten a tub of erythritol as sugar replacement - works pretty great, even though it's a bit less sweet and has this "cold" aftertaste. Perhaps that can help you out?
Xylitol is my go to option. Has the same "cool" taste and also calories, but I like it better than Erythritol in most dishes. But yeah, eating sweets isn't a problem. There are nice recipes for many things. Even "bread style" dishes.
@jodolski I don't want for sweet things because, based on what I've seen of the scientific literature, I'm not afraid of aspartame. I quit sugar a LONG time ago, and replaced it with diet soda, sugar-free fruit juices, and just a teeny-tiny amount of sugar-free candy. You gotta watch out for that last one, because sugar alcohols can cause serious gas, and maltitol in particular actually hits the blood glucose like sugar. I recent discovery of mine was taking a giant lemon, and adding it's zest and whole flesh into a pitcher of Crystal Light lemonade. Let that sit for two days and it's outrageous, if you like pulpy juices. Also, if you're diligent at avoiding starchy carbs, it's not too hard to sneak in some blackberries or blueberries or cantaloupe once in a while.
Thanks Will. You are a huge help. I’m a Granny, a VERY unhealthy granny. I am also disabled so, I’m not out pumping iron lol. I DO have my kettlebells and peddler, bands, yoga balls and so on, so I can do the small things ….and I do those small things non stop throughout the day. I used to weigh 333lbs at my highest, I’m am currently 197 and slowwwwwly continuing to go down. I do low carb, low fat and intermittent fasting. I’m mainly looking to get strong enough and light enough that when I fall, I can get myself off the floor instead of calling firemen to pull me up. Sad but true. (Don’t get me wrong, I love those hunky boys in yellow and blue as much as the next girl. Coughcough, Granny…but enough is enough) lol. I live in the middle of nowhere, out in the Country here in Az so, I can’t call a neighbor to pull me up. ONE of my debilitating illnesses is Rheumatoid Disease/Arthritis and for a long time I was dropping on the floor like Whack a Mole. It causes deformities in my toes, and fingers, and my knees just blink out occasionally and very unexpectedly. So, I wanted to thank you for your HIGH ENERGY and Mentally POSITIVE attitude and videos. They make me say to myself…. Get over it! Quit whining and WALK IT OFF…..get up and do this thing! So, you ARE helping people!!! Please keep them coming. ~ Jennifer
You crack me up and make me happy! Thank you, will! I tried the keto diet and I don't know what went wrong but my joints started hurting really bad so I had to stop though I still make keto recipes I just balance them out . I've lost 20 lbs so far!
Keto meals don't have to be small and leave you feeling like you're not full - just add lots of tasty vegetables. If you are someone who loves food and likes to eat a lot, I recommend trying IF/OMAD. I eat one meal a day, usually in the late afternoon after coming home from work; I spend around 30 minutes preparing a feast consisting of around 2 lbs of mixed vegetables, coupled with mozarella or feta, scrambled eggs and some kind of meat or fish. Add a generous amount of olive oil, apple cider vinegar, salt and pepper to dress it all up. Eating takes me about 1 hour, after which I feel really satiated and loaded with energy for the next morning's training session. I've always had difficulties eating several times a day, because I always wanted more and ended up eating way too much overall. With IF, I can go without hunger for 20h+, and when I eventually do get to eat, I can safely binge without having to worry about overeating.
I started Keto about 5 weeks ago and I am loving it all. The percentages are not really the point. Protein is the goal and use fat to get to the full feeling. So hit the protein gram amounts and use fat to help you stay full. The 70% fat rule is for treatment of diseases like epilepsy. I hit around 60-65% fat a day. A dude like you should be packing on the protein. Also your channel is my favorite on RU-vid.
No epilepsy is like 90%. A high protein diet isn't keto it is atkins. The point of the diet is you burn fat, so you have to feed the body fat. If you are losing weight you cut back on the fat, so it will use your stored fat.
I was on keto for 8 1/2 months, for reference im a 5'11 M Went from 250lbs to 145lbs, now im off keto and maintained for 2 months (i gained 7 lbs of water weight and im back down to 145lbs again WITH the water weight still in me by merely being in a caloric deficit) so anyone reading this who is scared to death of carbs please dont be. I now only track calories and protein sometimes my carbs are like keto level at like 9G net carbs and sometimes they exceed 150G going into nearly 200G. Don't be scared of carbs people. Calories Drive weight loss at the end of the day. Use keto as a tool, you don't gotta make it a lifestyle just be sure to learn from the discipline it gives you and eat better than last time! Don't go back to eating shit my friends.
Hey there. Im exactly 250 and 5 11 male. I just started keto. Im glad you posted this because it has me motivated to continue as i am the same as you were in height and weight.
@UGNA 27 Its honestly an amazing diet option for a lot of people. Don't look for 100lbs in 9 months, as numbers aren't easy to compare, but look forward to not being hungry and feeling a lot better after the initial couple days. But to me, keto was always a very sustainable diet. Could do it all the time. But I have to cut out most carbs due to celiacs disease, so I'm used to not having all things bread, no matter what I'm eating.
it's great when you're in need to drop a large amount of fat but once you're at your goal it could be optional. You should still mind what you eat and be reasonable going forward but there's no reason keto should be a forever thing unless you want it to be.
Marvel: “We have the best After Credits Scenes in Cinematic History!” Will: “HOLD my donuts!” 😏 Honestly, @24:09 LITERALLY gave me chills for some reason 🤣😳😰
It's crazy how everybody's bodies react to things so different. Like when I tried keto, I never got any headaches or tiredness or sleep interruptions. I did get "keto breath" though 😂
Keto breath is you breathing out 'ketones. It is a clear indicator that you are in ketosis. If you are not happy with it, try sugar free mints - but NOT too many - they will play BIG TIME with your intestines... and not in a good way.
It's good you kept the adjustment period out of the cons list. It actually takes most people around 10 days to become fat adapted and some people can experience the keto flu for a couple days after (so around 12 days). So to get an actual feel for keto, you need to do it for a couple of weeks at least
I love this! I love all of your videos where you try new diets. Unlike so many other you tubers who do this you actually do a substantial amount of research, keep an open mind, and have genuine respect for those who regularly follow that diet. You find the positives in each one, even if it is something you will never want to sustain yourself. Seriously appreciate this, which is why you’re my favorite “health/fitness” RU-vidr!
I did keto a few months ago and I lost about 15 pounds, and it’s brought me to a new maintenance weight and I’m so happy I did it. I was looking chubby but I slimmed out, try it if ur thinking about it.
Interesting about the keto energy supplement, would you say someone who is fairly active needs that electrolytes supplement? I always struggle with potassium & iron intake (have yet to track magnesium).
I recently just found your channel and I love how ACTIVELY you are uploading content. Your videos are a life saver, thank you Will and keep up with the good work.
@@_camy_ yeah I started keto on mid February and have lost 60 pounds. Sometimes you want some food that is similar to regular food and sometimes you just want to explore food. Its different for all👌👌
Keto is the only diet that works for me. Don’t know if it’s the best or not but nothing else works. It shuts off my cravings which makes it easier to stick to eating plan. With a balanced approach im starving day and night while actually gaining weight
Some of the people you showed are on the Keto Diet Because they are type 2 Diabetic and they like you are a inspiration for us who are diabetic. I am so glad for this video.
I was actually impressed by how well researched and informative this experience video was, it clearly differenciates you from other people who try keto or others "diet" without even knowing what they are doing and how it works
Ive done keto for 4 weeks three times. The first week sucks. Cravings, tiredness, weak in gym. After week one, i had more energy, my sleeps were amazing and my gym performance returned to baseline after 2nd week. I did supp with creatine after week one the 2nd and third time and it def helped with the "flatness" and gym performance. Leaned out twice as quick than when on low carb
Effective diet. Little too restrictive for many to stay consistent long term in my opinion. But if you can sustain it, it definitely has its benefits. Might be lacking in long term studies though. Thanks for the content as always 💪
@@Sco10 you're not burning protein for energy, you're burning your own STORED body fat for energy, instead of the DIETARY fat energy from keto. protein is not a true energy source.
@@Sco10 people stall out on keto all the time. so why do they once carbs are removed or reduced from the equation? the answer? they're eating too much FAT. dietary fat. so it's smart to bring your fat intake down, as the ketogenic diet does NOT require HIGH fat. added fat only exists to provide energy. ketosis is evoked from 1. cabohydrate restriction 2. fasting. high fat is NOT required. look up Ted Naiman. thank me later.
I love how you point out that it's water-weight you're losing. My ex wife had a habit of going from fad diet to fad diet. She'd start the latest tiktok diet, get really excited about 'losing 6lbs in a single day'... then get mad at me when I'd point out it was water weight and not fat she was losing. She'd get really upset that I wasn't being 'supportive' no matter how many times I'd tell her I was being realistic because I also knew how upset and disillusioned she'd get three days later when things would balance out and she'd put that weight back on. She might have lost a couple of lbs over a week, but because she'd lost 6lbs of water weight the first day, then 'gained' 4lbs back she'd then decide it wasn't working and quit. Your weight can fluctuate 5-6lbs in a single day just based on how hydrated you are. It's why you should only weigh once a week, or if you must weigh yourself every day, add the week's totals together and divide by 7 to get the average.
My take/opinion on Keto: Research Research RESEARCH! Don’t just dive right in. If you get sick, feel hungry, constantly snack and/or feel soggy…you are doing it WRONG! Research Research RESEARCH and then trust the process! When you’re in full ketosis, you feel amazing! Mentally and physically. You are full of energy all the time, that’s why people have a tough time sleeping. Burn off the energy helps that. You’ll find that you start skipping meals because you aren’t hungry all the time like you are used to. Most folks add a intermittent fasting life style because of this. When you do Keto the right way, you achieve so much: Mental clarity Amazing energy Save money on food The weight loss is just a bonus. Good luck all.
I did keto for a couple months, I was lucky I never got lethargic, lost 10 lbs quickly then another 5 and stayed consistent. My workouts were mostly resistance bands with Stevie Richards fitness program and 25-30 min runs 3-4 times a week. Snacks were mostly chalky protein bars but the kirkland protein bars were nice and chewy so I would eat those as well. Lettuce wrapped teen burgers were weekend treats for us.
I have been keto for exactly a yr as of yesterday. The first 2 months I felt my exercise and strength took a major hit. But once fat adapted I got all the strength back. But the beginning is rough! Seriously rough! But I lost 85 pounds and have only 6 more to go to hit my goal weight! But the last few pounds are coming off extremely slow!
This is consistent with the research on fat adaption of obese people. PPAR Alpha starts up regulating enzymes used in fatty acid metabolism between month 2-3. At that point you are fat adapted and metabolically flexible. Way to keep at it.
FreedomOctopus that is an old paradigm. The science doesn’t support that anymore. My LDL is 320. I’ve lost 110 pounds in the last 2 years eating a meat based diet. All of my labs are healthy. I even had a CRC test done that is a low dose MRI of the heart and and it is pristine condition. Keep ur LDL & HDL high and ur Triglycerides low and reduce smoking. You’ll thrive.
I have lost 20+kg on the keto diet and it did wonders for my concentration, my ability to focus and kick the sugar addiction. But my god, keto flu is no joke! Get your electrolytes! I had to carry salt with me when I started in case I ever got low. I am glad you covered all the important aspects of starting the diet and very glad you noted that the symptoms did get better.
This is a great program if your main goal is losing fat. I did keto for about six months and lost close to 40 pounds. The biggest downfall I saw was that my strength diminished. No matter how hard I trained, my one rep max on the big four all dropped by 20-40%. (Everyone has different results from any diet. This was just my experience.) That being said, this is a very accurate video of what you can expect when doing Keto.
It would have been nice to test to see whether you were actually producing ketones to check if you were able to switch your energy production within that week. I agree that most of that weight-loss was water. The digital scales can be off but they should detect a % change at least well enough to give us an idea. Thanks for the video.
Thanks so much for sharing this video! I so wanted to do Keto again but not sure why it’s so challenging to get it going. I am such a carb lover but the Leto diet is the most effective weight-loss diet that I have done…lost the weight pretty fast in less time. Hopefully I’ll do better to maintain the weight loss!😩
Its challenging because of peoples bad eating habits. Since childhood people eat bad. Most people don't even realize anymore when they open the fridge. Its pure habit and boredom, because they have nothing better to do. And if people are bored, they walk unconsciously to the fridge and open it. Most of the time snacking as a result. If you become aware of your bad eating habits, and do something else instead of snacking. You will succeed in any diet.
