I Tried to Live with a Foldable Phone

For the last month I’ve tried really hard to get into foldables by using this google Pixel fold. And I really think it’s changed how I view foldable phones, and whether or not someone should consider them. So, let’s talk about it.

0:00 Introduction
0:15 Types of Foldables
1:20 Benefits of a Large Foldable Phone
4:38 Negatives of Large Foldable Phones
8:43 Conclusion
There are 2 major types of foldable phones that are popular right now, ones that flip like an old motorola razr, where a compact square flips open to a more rectangular body, like the Samsung Z flip line or, the new Motorola Razr. And then there’s the opposite. Foldable phones that flip from rectangles into giant more squarish displays like the Samsung Z fold or this Pixel Fold.
Basically the idea of foldable phones is that this single device could replace the want or need to own a phone and a tablet. You use the form factor that’s right for the task you’re doing at the moment. And of course that depends on person to person but this really makes doing certain things easier and more enjoyable.
I primarily use the front screen for quick activities, things that require very little attention or effort. Answering a quick text, switching music tracks, googling that question you had, or reading an email. But if I plan to sit down, doom scroll on social media, read manga, play games, stream video, answer important emails, basically, whenever Im ready to really focus or immerse myself, I flip it open and do what I gotta do. If you read comics, a magazine, or manga, you can see content that’s supposed to be spread into 2 pages, all on the same screen. You can truly multitask by splitting the screen in two and have two different apps, one on each side of the display in their smartphone layout. You can have google docs open on one side with a website open on the other for reference. Apps that have tablet versions, will up the entire screen giving you more information on the display at once. Watching RU-vid videos or streaming in bed now means you have a larger screen to look at whatever and whenever you want to. With a foldable you can use it like a laptop and have a video play on the top half of the display. You can take a photo with the camera in that laptop-like state, and it’ll be steady. And then you can edit those same photos you took and edit it on the larger display, without having to move the photo to a different device to do so. If you’re a frequent traveler, you can just take your pixel fold or any folding phone with you and enjoy all your movies or tv shows on a bigger screen without taking along a tablet that you have to shuffle out of your backpack on a long flight.
I wanted to save the negatives for this part of the video. The big one is price. There aren’t too many folding phones on the market, but flip style foldables cost around $1000, which is in-line with other premium smartphones from different brands. Some are a little cheaper, some are a little more expensive. But generally. Around $1000. And then there’s these phone-tablet foldables. $1800. That’s pretty pricey. And it makes sense because you’re paying for a giant foldable display alongside your phone. Smartphones are now 3-4year commitments for some people so making the wrong purchasing decision could be bad because now they’re stuck with it for a long time before their next upgrade. People who have the luxury and funds to upgrade every year or two won’t care because they can afford it, and afford to switch devices whenever a shiny new one comes out. So it’s a lot easier for people to just get the latest iteration of their favorite smartphone.
Apps need to be optimized for these form factors. Foldable phones make up a small piece of the smartphone pie. Google apps work perfectly on the pixel fold, but 3rd party apps vary. Some apps that don’t have an optimized version will just give you the smartphone version on one side of the screen.
So, what are my final thoughts on foldables? Folding phones are super cool. I was really skeptical going into trying it and seeing if it actually provided a significant benefit to me over a regular phone and after switching back to a regular phone. But in the same vein, 3rd party apps need a little more work, and these large phone-tablet foldables are expensive, making it hard to recommend to the average person. I really like this pixel fold, it’s so close to being the perfect foldable and that’s why I think the future is bright for foldables.

Quite possibly the best title for a RU-vid video I’ve seen in years. It made me want to watch the video more than the thumbnail. Fantastic job!!!

I’ve had and have the fold3/4 and it’s great. It’s delicate, yet more durable than people realize. It’s not the same as having a regular phone and separate tablet, I’ve tried it.

People should try the LG V60 with the dual screen. Does all the multi tasking but if you want to just a normal phone you can take off the second screen. Plus headphone jack. I wish mine didnt have the port connection problem

I've almost at my third year of ownership for my LG V60 dual screen. I am going to hold on to it until a larger better true foldable phone comes along.

been rocking a zfold3 since 2021, I've been tempted back to slabs but it's always been for software or camera reasons. my pixel 3a took incredible pictures compared to the fold's generally crappy output. however, the form factor would be hard if not impossible to switch back to. when folded it's smaller, compact smartphone (the likes of which that don't exist anymore) and open it's a huge screen with room for everything. plus, compared with other phones it's not even much of a trade off. an iPhone 14 Pro Max is only like 20 grams lighter but is absolutely monstrous when paired with a case. forget about women's pants pockets, that thing barely fits in men's. if 'regular' phones keep trending larger then I'll be happy to stay with a phone that can be (relatively) compact when it needs to be.

Had a Z fold 2 for three years and just changed to Z fold 5. Can never move back to regular phones. I am lucky to be able to get them at 1190$, so doesn't feel too bad price wise compared to other flagships.

I really like your presentation of it all. Thank you sir. I'm a fan of the Pixel Fold and currently using a Pixel 7 Pro. I would like to save up for the Pixel Fold 2 and hopefully it'll come out with a more efficient processor.

Switched from an s6 edge, s8 plus, S10 plus then note 20 Ultra to pixel fold, and love it so far. Brilliant, misses a few one ui goodies but overall delighted and the camera for stars/night sky is incredible 👍

Flip phones are actually physically smaller than other phones, this is one of the main reasons I switched. But I always wish I had a pixel camera instead, that's true

One thing I'm curious about is the aspect ratio: the Pixel fold almost seems to be a square when opened up. Since videos are generally shot in widescreen, it feels like the extra space is not really utilized effectively, unless the dimensions of the folded-up version changed, which would impact the usefulness in smartphone mode.

For video, when unfolded, the screen is larger than what I'd get from my phone turned sideways. But agreed, there's still a decent chunk of black bars on the side and the inner screen benefits multi-tasking and photos more than video.

For video, which I imagine will be the main use case for the larger screen, I agree that a bifold isn't the best form factor because of aspect ratio. I'm personally holding out for tri fold phones to come out where the unfolded size will be a rectangle similar to tablets. Thankfully there's already prototypes of such devices so maybe one will be launched soon .

Amongst larger foldables, the Pixel Fold is actually the best in this regard i.e. the widest aspect ratio. On both the internal as well as the external displays. The second best is the Find N2.

I'm waiting for a foldable with a wider aspect ratio. I really dislike unused space on most foldables.

Curious what kind of content you'd think would be better on a wider aspect ratio? I'd imagine most people are reading something (ebook, email, social media) or watching something.

There’s one other problem with those foldable phones and that is durability. None of these foldable phones could survive a day at my work as is so hostile even for regular mobile phones. These fine dust, metal grit, and vibration that would just destroy them and that is why I have my iPhone 15 Pro Max in a folio case to protect it. I have considered buying a foldable phone, the Samsungs galaxy z flip 5 was on my radar but as I said, my work conditions would destroy it pretty quickly. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

largables should be a thing for large foldables anyways. unfortunately im stuck on iphones, ive tried android once just couldnt wrap my head around it. ive been with the iphone 5, 8 and currently 13pro max. i forgot which samsung but had a second hand from a relative between the 8 and 13 just something about the way iphones ui or touch is intuitive to me at least. dont use macs because vidya games. i do hope apple makes a foldable phone might catch the second or third iteration though this 13pro max still has at least 4 years or until battery drops down to like 70s%. great video btw not many videos of your average consumer trying out a foldable perspective theyre all about that spec sheet so thank you

Tbh the conclusion I came to with this is to stick with my S20 ultra (used when I got it). I like the flip style, but they can't stand Nevada heat, it actually stops being able to even take calls during the days! Fold style looks great, but everything I'd do on it I'd rather just do on my tablet if we're being honest. I think the context I'd get a fold is if I'm traveling more so I don't have to remember my laptop everywhere. All that said, I love that they exist! Smartphones were getting boring, and the only reason I thought about upgrading was to get a better camera. If I notice slowdown on my phone I'll probably upgrade, but more likely than not at this point my decision will likely be determined by the camera and the color of the back as I'd likely get a higher end phone I know I can trust another four or five years (fairphone, wish you didn't take the headphone jack, we were so close to greatness!).

How's the weight/bulk? Does it feel like two,1.5 phones when in your front pocket?

It's slightly thicker than an average phone, and feels slightly heftier when using the external display. Otherwise it just feels like a slightly heavier phone!

I absolutely despise carrying around a huge phone cuz I always carry them in my pocket and anything above a certain size will just drop immediately whenever I sit. But along came the flip phones (again) and I actually started thinking about getting one, but MAN the shape just kills me, they feel just too tall when they're open and I just can't, it's like holding a TV remote.

Feel down the road I might look at a foldable, smartphone. Thing is I live in the Apple OS/UNIX garden. My hope is that at some point Apple might market a foldable, smartphone. If I did use something outside the garden it would be a Google Android/Linux device.

If it folds I've folded it yet the pixel is the one I decide to hold on too not because it's the fastest that goes xiaomi fold 3 not because it's the thinnest or lightest that would be the honor magic. The pixel is the one I decided to keep because the user interface is perfection the almost 300grams wrapped in steel frame makes it feel significant.

Just ridiculous pricing. I paid £500 for a Brand New Pixel 6 Pro. Try to justify a £1300 premium for a "folding phone," that will inevitably develop obvious wearing along the crease fold. It's just another fad to squeeze morons of their cash.
