I tried to make my own wedding dress! (and I failed) 

Cursed video! Cursed hot weather! Cursed dress! If anyone needs me I'll be trying out one of the new sour icepops we've recently procured...will report back.

Oh Michelle, your honesty is such a blessed relief on the internet! I'm sorry you went through so much anxiety regarding your dress, but you looked absolutely beautiful and as you say, if nothing else you will have THE most amazing pajamas.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVED this video……but first CONGRATS…..You and Hubby looked so happy with your entourage!….. As a 72 year old Happy Ager…..I too made my own wedding dress….candle-light linen color……in empire style….. a bit of lace…..it was the 70’s…..hippy dippy….. flowers in your hair……the most delicious spice cake with meringue mushrooms …..I wore Mexican Herraches ( not sure about the spelling but super duper comfortable) …..think tire treads …….small small guest list…..and on the 29th 2023 this month it will be 49 years…..need I say more….the journey has well worth the ups and downs…….so just live each day to its fullest and please allow us more videos using your creative vision……

Sorry to hear the mini wedding stress got to you as well. We also agreed on the lowest key wedding possible, my side of the family didn't even attend due to living too far away for the 15min ceremony and meal we planned. I also felt pressured to make it a bit more "weddingy" and bought myself a "real" dress off Etsy made by a local business, as well as shoes, and a curling wand (which I never used in my life). The dress was pictured with a sash which I didn't want to pay another 80£ for, so I decided to buy silk and sew it myself and just that was stressful enough. Fast forward to the wedding, it was me in my over the top outfit, hair and makeup, with a husband who forgot the tie I bought him and shoes that fell apart on the same day. To top it off, we tried to video the wedding on a zoom call for my family in a spotty network area, and my 23yo nephew filmed with the phone sideways so they watched it with their heads tilted!!! Weddings have no right being that stressful when you're just confirming something everybody already knows. I hope you still had a great time, and the both of you looked really lovely and happy and that's what counts. On a side note I think that DIY dress was still looking pretty snazzy, perhaps it could be finished some day, or if not, you could make a summery dress with that pattern? As for the concern with your elbows, I know you can buy skin tone sleeves, they're mostly for older ladies who want to hide the saggy arm skin, but they could cover your elbows while barely showing under the dress. (A bit like tights, for your arms)

I didn't realise how hard wedding dress shopping was until helping my sister get hers. She wanted that elegant lacy wedding dress but we went to one shop and they spent the whole time putting her in what others normally go for rather than what she wanted. Thankfully our neighbour is an amazing seamstress and was honoured to make my sister a dress. But then we came across similar issues that you had, limited options and those that were available were expensive. Thankfully we found a cheap wedding dress online and my neighbour managed to turn it into a beautiful dress of my sisters dreams. We did this over the course of a year so I don't know how you managed to go through all that in three months. You both looked so pretty and happy and I hope you had a wonderful day!

Having a quick wedding turn around is definitely the way to go, and I agree that making wedding flowers is the best idea! The dress you got was great! My dress was $60 from Eshakti and I loved it. Definite solidarity!

Congratulations! You looked wonderful! I don't have any wedding activities of my own to speak from, but I do think this whole glam perfection bride thing is relatively new and it's such a shame. I was recently looking at some photos of my parents' wedding in the 70s, simple lacy dress, paper cut-out decorations on the cinder block dining hall wall and my mom said that's what all the weddings were like back then. I think that's one reason I like vintage stuff so much. It's not necessarily the style, it's the simplicity. Things are too complicated anymore. I applaud you for keeping things simple and just having a wonderful day!

At the end of the day, you looked blissfully happy and so did Dave and that’s all that matters! Shared experience bonding story below: I, too, was married in a cheap Amazon dress (36 US dollars) and my hair was a bit of a mess. We had 4 people total (counting me and my groom) and it was perfect. We had 4 months to plan and I would trade not a second of it! (Even if it was insanely stressful) oh! And we were married on the 13th intentionally to tempt the fates! ❤️❤️

Great video! You looked amazing on your day despite the setbacks. It's so easy to get sucked into those perceived expectations, isn't it? If this had been me many years ago, I would never have allowed myself to give up on the dress. I would have kept going until it killed me and ruined the day. Honestly it really is stressful to do a special occasion dress I'm currently doing my daughters prom dress n only started sewing aug 23 then made first clothing item Jan so it's been a challenge designed it myself no pattern and the skirt and petty coats done. I too got married in a dress from Amazon with some added lace mine was £40 with all the lace

I’m so impressed with how well the Amazon dress suited you! I can never choose the right style on amazon😅. I can definitely understand the struggle with making your own dress. For my wedding I completely reconstructed my dress and absolutely hated it for months after the wedding. Looking back on it now though I love it. It’s hard to like things you make yourself if it’s not absolutely perfect and when your stressed and trying to be quick things never turn out perfect. At least you learned from the experience and maybe get a fun new everyday dress out of it😊

I have only made one dress for myself in Home Ec and just hated the way it fit. My Gram sewed a lot of our clothes and one of her tricks is neat. To get the fit a bit more accurate, she had us put the garment on inside out then adjusted the seams. Thanks for so sharing this with us. Take care!

Making my wedding dress was the only thing keeping me sane, when I'd just moved to the UK, my husband was working full time, I wasn't allowed to work in the UK until I had my marriage visa, and I was living with my in-laws. Also though, I was 21. I'd probably be a lot more stressed out now, at 41, if I was making my wedding dress. Love your attitude and your honesty. You looked fantastic in both dresses, but most importantly you didn't put yourself under too much pressure to make the me-made dress work. Glad you had a wonderful day that felt like your own. It can be hard to maintain that at a wedding! Congratulations!!

This was so lovely! We also did a non wedding wedding - two witnesses each and tea and toast afterwards (the tea room had sold out of all their sandwiches and even cakes😂). It was perfect as I didn't have to worry about everyone, I just got to spend the day with my new husband. I love your pictures of you in the arcade - if we had had one in Harrogate I totally would've done the same!

How awesome is the 1st of April, probably the best wedding date I've ever heard! Both of you looked absolutely lovely and happy, I'm so glad you didn't let the stress of trying to sew your own dress ruin this nice event. I also had my dress from the internet (my mom helped to adjust it a little bit), made my own makeup (not very professionally), my sister made my hair (also not professionally) and it was all fine and fun.
