Can you overclock a high performance cooling fan? Well the answer just might surprise you (it surprised me) since I tried it with a bunch of fans to validate the results before trying the Noctua NF-A12x25.

I found this video very fun and did not expect the fans to survive at 20V. Kinda minor but there's a slight error on the text at the top right at 8:28 where it says its the Arctic Cooling P12 instead of the the Noctua NF-A12x25, but on the different voltage tests for that fan the text was correct. I hope to see more of these kinds of somewhat wacky but educational experiments in the future.

If you want to do this kind of thing get DC fans and a DC controller. Just know that when you do this you are probably overheating the coil and "shortening the lifespan" is an understatement and could result in a short, in fact it probably will. Just because it's spinning it doesn't mean it's not dying.

found this video because I'm wanting to see how much some fans can tolerate, but, back in the day I did some crazy experiments on basic 80mm fans, rewind the stators with higher gauge wire, replaced the mosfets if they had any (most low power don't and switch directly with the hall effect sensor) so wire the hall sensor to large power transistors, then can run at 5v or even 3.3v and get like 12000rpm till something melted. but i think noctua has a more complicated drive so wondering if i can just overvolt it some.

Fans normally have a threshold for starting for example 5 Volt. They also have a Voltage intervall for example 5-24 Volt.

also...almost everything 12v is good till 14.4v minimum..... in automotive applications this is necessary because of the alternator charging circuit (which can hit 16v+) amplifiers are often rated as tested at 14.4v to up the numbers for marketing too. this sets a standard whether its written or not....almst anything 12v is built with that automotive expectation in mind....noctua and other PC specific mfgs probably arent even thinking about it as i suspect the good brands are looking for even better than this basic "expectation/standard" that engineers have in mind. if your alternator is outputting higher than 16v go see a mechanic cuz you need a new one or vreg at least. 18-24v is not unheard of when an alternator craps out and the rest of the system is "supposed to" take it (for short periods) without burning ecu's and other expensive components....

AIO overclocking? Oooh!!!! How about adding shrouds to a 280 AIO for a push-pull with 4x Fractal Design Dynamic X2 GP-18 PWM, 180mm? Those 180x38 should push some air. Or see what a 120 or 140 can cool, with a push-pull shroud and a 200x30 fan combo? 3D printing shrouds should make life easy.

I tried to increase the voltage on simple fans, some work stably up to 34 volts from 12, but most die on 28 volts, so you can safely spin a simple fan on your computer 2 times faster by inserting the ground (black wire) into -12 (blue) but keep in mind that you do everything at your own peril and risk, as they say, everything in life happens and your propeller can die, but nothing will happen to it from a laptop battery, +20 percent approximately to the declared speed

you don't need higher than 12v for more power, i made a 80mm go 8000rpm at 3.3v all depends on the wiring, just look at server fans they have power at 12v. its mostly the market and the majority of people wanting quiet that's flooded everything with low power fans.

Was that a noctua nf-s12a at 0:26? I really wanted to see it overclocked, because it has such a low stock rpm (1200) and that seemed to be because it was designed for max airflow at the lowest noise possible, while greatly sacrificing static pressure. Will this design be able to scale up to higher rpm, or will it stall due to such a steep blade angle?

That's really cool (no pun intended). In my case, I got the CPU fan from an old HP computer that can run at 4000 RPM and move a ton of air alone. I don't need to ever run it to that speed, but it can and it's an aircraft engine while doing so. It doesn't require more voltage like in this video so, get your old 80-120mm fan a second chance, people

Everyone watching, please do not try this at home. I've done this with heaps of different sized fans in the past and have had some motor assemblies explode on me as well as blades ripping themselves off the central hub and flying in every direction (Albeit, they weren't good quality fans x'D...) Use safety goggles, mount the fan so it you don't have uncontrolled movement (Though that lil driver seems to do enough for 120mm fans) and if you're using a screwdriver like in this video to change the potentiometer on the transformer, use gloves to avoid risk of electric shock, though not fatal, still not fun x'D On the other hand, this was good to watch :P
