So I tried traditional painting instead of digital painting for once...
It was much harder than I thought but also 100% worth it.

Expensive, very, very expensive...There are videos of some good and recognized artists from who IMO you'll learn more and better, videos from César Santos, Casey Baugh, Michael Carson, Joshua LaRock, Daniel Sprick, Charlie Hunter, David Kassan, and of course Richard Schmid...all of them professional and renowned painters. You don't need 1000$ in art material to start painting, 1000$, really? I don't think so...at least the box and the paper blocks in the web don't value 1000$, well, not where I buy my art supplies. Anyway, great video as always and thank you for your work...

I love oil paints! I use walnut oil these days instead of turpentine, which really cuts down on the harsh chemicals and fumes, and it makes cleanup pretty quick and easy. For me, my digital and traditional work have each built off the other over the years, which has helped me grow in new ways as an artist.

I always envy someone who can paint oils. The amount of time it takes for them to dry makes layering difficult and colour mixing is difficult. Painting a person's face in oil looka like the ultimate challenge. I've missed watching you on Twitch, but if its not rude to suggest an oil painter artist on twitch, there's a guy called "ArthurGain" who does some mesmerising oil painting if you ever want to chill and watch a traditional oil painter. Buy that said, this has been a great video, it's good to hear from you again :) hopefully won't be too long before the streams are back but hopefully you're doing well man. Take care :)

It's so cool to see artists switching from digital to traditional media! They both come with their own challenges :) Just a question, but did this course go over how to work safely with the oils and thinners and such? (ie ventilation, cleanup, disposal of chemicals, etc.)
@BrendaFOBRocks

one tip i can give you for painting straight lines traditionally is to make sure you flip the board/canvas so you're painting the lines horizontally. It's hard to explain over text, but place your brush down firmly and lock your wrist in place, then move your arm horizontally in order to create the straight line. I do this with watercolors all the time and for some reason it gives me more control than trying to paint a straight line vertically. THis looks amazing and i hope you keep doing traditional art!

Ah, love you. I don't really do digital (Yet) but have learnt so much from you watching your videos. I paint in oils and acrylic and mixed media, I draw and compose with photoshop. I have mastered so many techniques and seeing you try to expand your repertoire has been very enjoyable. Everything in the end comes down to attitude. Keep up the good work and learn to embrace the fear, there is much it can teach us.

I remember that when I was a kid I learn many mediums of traditional art including pencil drawing, acrylic painting, a bit of oil painting, watercolour painting, oil pastel, chalk, charcoal drawing, clay and more. I also learned a lot of techniques and styles along the way. It's alot of fun because despite looking terrible looking at it now, it reminds me of the desire to learn new things. That's how I found out about anime and digital art as well. That stopped for a while when I took art as a subject and stuck onto doing ink illustrations and digital illustrations. Of course I got bored for a while which made me go back to making a mess with acrylic and watercolour paints at some point. Now studying in polytechnic, I learned alot of things about digital media; tools like Photoshop, illustrator, premier Pro, and even after effects, learn alot about design, composition, colour, typography, animating, editing and more. It was great. Mmm what I was trying to say is that it is ok to mess up or fail. Because that'll end up to help you in the future. It's also nice to see the progress from how you start and where you are now. Well I'm still afraid of messing up but I know that through my mistakes, I can do better!!! Ganbare famn

This is by far my favorite video maybe because I’m a traditional artist and I love paints! After seven years of not painting I don’t think you lost your touch in my opinion and it was nice to watch. I never worked on canvas or use oil paint in my life maybe because of the expensive price and what I heard about oil paint, but I’m thinking about buying a few to give it a test drive. Time to get out of my comfort zone which is ink, watercolor, gouache, alcohol-based markers, and acrylic. Thank you for this great video. P.S. Now I see why you never answer my question on “ask me anything “ because it would’ve been a spoiler for this video. I’m happy that you’re stepping out of your comfort zone which inspires many of us to do the same! Also one of my favorite parts of this video is you looking into the camera as it was fading at the end! Great video and Thank you again. 🙌🏽🎨💫✨

I started drawing on the computer when I was about 10 years old. My main tools for several years were just our home computer and a mouse but I always dreamed about one day being able to draw on a screen. I still sketched on paper very often and I eventually learned how to colour those sketches digitally. When the Wacom Cintiq was revealed I was so excited but the price tag made it extremely unaffordable. As time went on, more display tablets were created and the prices became much more affordable. Now, at 29, my dream is reality and there are so many different display tablets to choose from. I now have an iPad and I love that the drawing experience is clean and I can choose any colours to work with! I have little interest in buying and storing paints and all of the other supplies needed for traditional art. In a way, drawing digitally is "traditional" to me because I've been doing it for about 2/3 of my life. I guess the point of this is to say that I absolutely love drawing digitally and I am so happy we're at a time where display tablets are more accessible and people have the option of painting digitally and/or traditionally.

What's going to happen is, when you go back to messing with digital brushes, you'll find yourself saying, "nonono. That brush is working wrong." That's what happened to me at least. I started art with traditional supplies. I didn't get any computer stuff until way after learning art. One thing we did in one class was each student was only able to use one color chalk. There were about 30 students in the class. Instructor put a potted plant in the middle of all the easels. You went around the room with 30 seconds for each drawing. She'd get on your case if you weren't drawing all over the drawing the full 30 seconds. At the end those drawings were crazy cool.

When you said that you painted those at the start, I had to do a double take. I thought they were photos 😭

Just saying, as a traditional artist who has always felt almost defeated by hour beautiful Josh’s work is, this gave me a new perspective and a lot of hope for myself. My paintings are good, we just use different mediums and they each have their own challenges.

This was great to see a artist come from digital and try traditional! I have done 20 years oil and traditional... and got into digital this year but the traditional knowledge transfers well! Tip for Oil: Paint in a super well ventilated room! the solvents cause cancer and got Bob Ross! so be careful and keep progressing!

I've always done traditional,so I feel you with the shock of how hard it is.I have tried digital several times,I think its harder,ig thats why there's different ways to do art for different ppl.But ye fr those brushes sure do "have a mind of their own" lol

My hand is shaky too. At some point, I would like to dive deep into the atelier method of learning. My concern with these courses is that I've done many similar exercises on my own, but cannot skip ahead. I even stopped painting for a few years to go back to basics just to have someone tell me to go back to drawing again. At least I eventually got them to appreciate my art later on.

Hey Josh, you need to mix and ease the paint with a mix of oils. you will need: Alkyd Flow Medium; Purified Poppy Oil and Linseed Stand Oil. (I use Daler-Rowney brand) put on a jar witj a lid, 50% Alkyd, 20% Linseed and 30% Poppy. mix a little bit on the pallete (a drop) and you will have a butter smooth oil that mixes very easely and blends even better!!!

There are so many things you did better than some art students! Starting with cleaning your brushes at the end.. 😂 The reason why using the biggest brush for gradients is best is because when you use the small ones, it will seem as if you doing details and it will not be so even. Printing the image instead of using a monitor is also great!!! You have something that is not going to change when you adjust your brightness on the monitor. "Just stay within the lines" is one of the many reasons why Mondrian became famous. I might have to try out this class.

I can relate to this so much! I mean, I love traditional art but painting is just too hard for me. Anyway, great video as always 🤍

Any else who's a traditional oil painter get super edgy watching this? Josh the delight of oils and the fact they don't dry quickly is the wonder, jump in you don't need to be so carful, if you go wrong you can paint over it, I'm not sue how the course is taught but using bigger brushes and then finishing with the smaller brushes would have helped (as the other teacher mentioned)- don't be afraid to experiment - I know its a class but it's an art class so I'm sure theres room to wiggle. Anyway good for you trying out a new medium =). Also usually I find your voice and video style really soothing, its only this one- because you can tell how nervous you are to paint- hope some of my tips help

Is their a course like this for digital tho? Going from your example, I would say that I have developed the skill to control the chaos, but digital art is so smooth my brain can't get around it. I also think that I go into digital as if it were traditional. Good video tho.

I've bought a big bunch of slightly used Schmincke oil paint in February for an absolute steal price. I love how oils behave but am also very intimidated by using solvent and additives ^^"

I started Evolve a couple of weeks ago. Gradients are hard at first, but it was pointed out to me that we will be practicing them a lot. I have gotten better, so there is something to repetition. :) Enjoyed your thoughts on it.

👏👏👏 fantastic job!!!!! It you get more and more into it tho you gotta be more aware how you clean your brushes. It’s bad to just clean your water in a sink because the chemicals will get into the water.
