I'd argue art school is not necessary for the basics. I'm graduating this year and I can safely say if you're looking to learn how to draw, art schools aren't really there for that. They want students who already have the basics down because they have so many applying to begin with (that and they want to produce more prodigies and the assumption is that if your don't learn the basics they shouldn't accept you). A lot of art schools can be very picky. If you're looking to learn a basic class and have the materials already I think you can search that up online already on YT. There are so many options available that I feel art school JUST for that is pointless. I think the main appeal of art school in general is networking, peer feedback, and exposure to new concepts. A lot of people don't mention it but social media is awful for peer feedback. When you don't get decent critiques you also are going to be dealing with people who may or may not have your best interests in mind. A school setting can be similar in nature as everyone is also looking to make their break but I find that at least in my experience people were willing to help and were generally chill. The tips I got were extremely helpful and I can't say I didn't learn a lot from my peers or meeting new people. The best way I can put this is that art school isn't 100% useless but it's not 100% as useful as it could be. Unless you're going in for something very specific or you want that experience and can afford it, I'd give it a pass. However a good school will still be well worth the time despite that. I know plenty of people who got a lot of out it and some who just didn't feel it was going to work out. One thing is for certain, make sure you go because you think you could use it! If not, take other essential courses like business/art foundation courses from a community college. It helps!

The other thing you get in art schools are contacts. If you don't go to art school, you don't know any galleries or other artists it's going to take a lot longer to make those contacts. It took me a good 3 years to have actual contacts (as in friendly contacts and not just " I asked a question and got an answer contact) (also a trained architect btw, though never worked as one and now I'm one of those lunatics fine art artists)

Recent SCAD grad here: all these points are exactly what makes art school worth it. I'm glad you touched on these points. It's really easy to say "well you really DON'T have to go to school for art" because you really don't. But school forces you to get better faster, especially if you were like me who didn't know how to get better. Also, it really does force you to stop thinking about your style because you have no time to think about it! And eventually you'll start to notice what your style is. But yeah, I would say if you need the discipline and want honest critique, go to art school. You'll really learn if your cut out for an art industry job that way too.

This came at the right time when I'm setting up my plans for making a portfolio for art school. Thank You :) Edit: woahh ty for the likes! Unfortunately, due to personal life changes I'm not able to attend art school in this current time (Moved out of state!). However, I'm doing illustrations and youtube stuff! For those who are still going for Art School, don't give up :) And if there's circumstantial things that are out of your control, there are always options out there for you to choose.

I've been in an art academy for 3 years and graduated in illustration. None of the things I know today about art fundamentals (anatomy, perspective, values, edges, shading, composition etc.) was ever taught to me and I had to fill the gasps over the last year and a half with online tutorials. It's not the same for everyone, but in my case except for some live drawing classes the art academy was a gigantic waste of money and time. When I'm asked about my preparation for work I tell clients I am self taught, it's not too far from truth haha.

If your going to go to college and study some form of art, id recommend getting a degree in the more technical side of art such as animation, 3D modeling, graphic design, etc. I personally am studying 3D modeling, and I have hit a wall as to how much I can learn from the internet, which is where having profs and class mates to ask questions is well worth the money. But going to a traditional art school just to learn how to paint better is a big waste of money. Through my degree I learned so much more than I could have ever learned by myself in terms of 3D modeling/animation. But don't go to college for traditional art.

I want to be an animator and people say you don't "need" it, but it is so hard to learn it properly alone on my own as well as creating a good enough portfolio to actually get employed. So it is recommended a lot in order to get a job

I went to university for illustration with the idea that I’d end up designing packaging or something and left with a passion for children’s book illustration. Your art tutors can have such a massive impact on you and show you areas of art you hadn’t thought about before. I’m going back in October to start my Masters studies. I want to give myself a year to focus fully on my artwork and portfolio to help me launch my first book!

I'm 28, just started art school last fall. I've learned two MAJOR things (in my opinion) that have been a game changer for me. One, that I've been struggling with for years, and still struggle with, is time management. Part of this came from watching the fresh out of high school kids wait til last minute to finish things and then all flip out collectively when it came to a due date. I didn't like this feeling myself and at least as far as school is concerned, I'm finally managing my time better and making sure I'm not struggling to finish assignments last minute. The other thing was learning how to THINK. More than anything I am being taught how to think, how to come up with ideas, how to question and then answer those questions. My teachers are making sure I am marketable, able to get a job post school. Making sure I am able to make a clients dream come to life. How to analyze and make sure I'm doing all I am to create something that gives off some kind of feeling or emotion. I went into school thinking I'd learn certain things better, such as anatomy, etc, and while I am in certain ways, such as lifedrawing class, my art has immensely improved by just adjusting my viewpoint and my thinking to come up with ideas. Another thing I'd like to add, is being online for half of spring semester/fall, I've greatly missed the critique and feedback times. Standing in a circle going over mockups or thumbnails and giving opinions, and then being critiqued on final projects and seeing what I can't or don't see in my own work being pointed out for good or better. No one has really participated in this with the online classes except my teachers, which, while I appreciate their feedback, they are experts. It's hard to find other art students, at least for me, that know how to critique or are willing to critique. And when it's not required to turn in an assignment, I find myself not bothering with thumbnails or mockups half the time, which is a step backwards for me. Just my two cents. I learned a lot online before I got into art school, but my art has really improved a thousand fold in just a couple semesters. I'm a person that needs to be directed and taught, preferably in person, so online classes/skillshare type stuff just doesn't really click with me.

Honestly, the main reason i’m hesitant about going to art school is that the price is very huge especially in LA. Also, getting into an art school seems like half the battle already which makes no sense to me...While I want to master the fundamentals and would benefit from the skills, those two things really make me question art school (Thank you for the likes!! Another thing that I couldn't find anywhere else in art school is to be surrounded by other artists that one thing made me want to practice more to stand out in this small art community 👀 And back before I went to art school I really didn't know how to practice or how to get better at art I was just drawing things, and I got lucky to be a friend with the most hardworking people in the whole school another thing that really poshed my skills to the limit!

Thank you for not making me feel stupid for going back to art school. I took 2D animation at Capilano university, North Vancouver. it was a great experience, and made me happy too. I’m taking 3D next. But every other artist I respect seems like they’re trying to make me feel stupid for my decision.

As a incoming Junior attending SVA, art school is what u make of it. Some slack and won't get much, others will find new passions from realizing what they love and dont love. People may or may not thrive in art school because it is tough, extremely tough. This is what the art industry itself is though, tough. From my few years at SVA, I loved and hated moments of both and now in 2020, I have decided to take a gap year and start my own business. I love my major but I don't know if its for me and thats ok! I am grateful for SVA and what I learned and I may return next year to earn finish off and earn my degree.

Art school isn’t always worth the cost. You can do art and learn discipline on your own. If anything, artists should should study business. Not having business sense or interest is the real reason artists aren’t making the money though could.

I'm glad that a lot of people take the time to self teach themself. But I hate that they try to make it seem like self taught makes you better than someone who went to college. I was self taught for 5 years before I went to college. Going to college taught me so much about the business side of being an artist, as well as how to problem solve and how to create unique ideas for your work. My mind set is so different because of the things I learned in college.

depends also on which art school u go to. i think mine has done a really good job at developing our skills which is what school should be for. i asked my profs what they look for when they accept students, they all told me that our school doesnt look at skills. you can learn those at school. they look for passion and out of the box thinking, the potential to become great with guidance. ive learned a LOT at art school, ive improved drastically, but i also put in the work the effort and im always communicating with my profs so i can improve fast. part of that includes learning things outside of what is taught traditionally in school. making friends from art school teachers also means that i have connections after im done, one of my profs is even considering hiring me as a studio assistant for his business once im finished. also critiques is probably the most useful thing to come to my art, getting told whats going well and not going well in a piece from not only my peers but professionals in the field was really valuable.

ideally, but at the end of the day art is so subjective that a lot of 'guidance' can often be harmful in the long run. My art teachers admonishing anime in a non-realistic drawing setting led to me feeling that the art I did for fun didn't have any value, and I stopped drawing for six months because of it.

Thank you for this video because the amount of people in the industry who call art school "worthless" has really been making me question if I'm wasting my time. But if I'm being honest with myself, I don't think I personally would be where I am right now without all the critique and structure/discipline I get from my classes. I can be a bit of a mess when left to my own devices, so having classes to get me used to working on my art regularly and practicing fundamentals has really helped.

Awesome video josh. I'm toying with the idea of going to art school and I'm 36. You can do anything at any age and if you want to do it, do it. Don't wait until your older and miserable in a job you hate before you decide to do what you wanted in the first place. Life is short, take a chance, you won't regret it. ♥️👌💯

I haven't made money online, but what i got from this is school will make you a better artist, the internet education and platforms will make you money

I can definitely agree with this. If you look at my art from a year ago you'd see that I've improved a lot. It's really due to the work you put in and the people you have guiding and critiquing you. It's not easy but you can do it.

I’m a freshman in highschool and I really wanna find something pursuing art. It’s one of my main skills and I feel this is something I could actually genuinely enjoy in life.

I’m a self taught artist and I only really began taking a serious interest in art my senior year or highschool. First, I taught myself calligraphy then I did watercolor canvas paintings and sold a few, and currently I’m learning to navigate the various things I can do with graphic design. I really hope I continue improving and being inspired

As a graphic design student I am so happy that my school guided me the way they did. I didn't think I was learning anything but when I looked back at my work I seen my growth.

Oooh... Critiques... they are SO effing hard to get, and so needed especially when we feel stuck about our art. And I say that from personal experience. I feel like I'm not going forward anymore and a lot of people tell me my art "is cool" but that's not what I see and that won't help me progress. I wish i could afford classes right now, really!

Josh coming in with the TRUTH. Critique was always my favorite part of art school & it's honestly something I miss so much. Not everyone appreciates it, and it can be hard to hear something negative about something you've sunk hours or days worth of time into, but the growth from it is incredible.

My school experience was HANDS DOWN the most valuable time that I could have spent as an artist. I definitely would not be the artist I am today if I had just studied business. I actually tried to do a business related degree first and hated every minute of it, which made me turn towards an art degree. I really agree with you Josh about the critique experience - you can't get it anywhere else. Every class varied because of the professors but overall it was always a genuine exchange of feedback on how to improve what you're trying to achieve. I think being exposed to all the different kinds of artists in a class (especially interdisciplinary classes) is really beneficial just to see what's possible and how they do things. I also really agree that it takes TIME to create something amazing. The most amazing piece I've ever done was the largest and took the longest - 6 months of physical work, 1 year total including a "rough draft" and planning phases. It takes time, discipline, and WORK. Can't get around it if you want to be good.

The part about the critiques is so true. It also applies to writers as well. Sure you can share your story online but the most critique you're going to get is, "that's good," "You're writing is nice," or "good description." They're not gonna help you become a better writer. Just like tumblr isn't going to help you become a better artist.

Bro hit the nail on the head. The discipline and guidance can still be found outside of school but the quality is varied. A lot of the time when we start trying to learn something we don’t really consider how important other people are in our journey. Self made, self taught ideology fails to acknowledge that we need others to become all that we ought to be.

I dont know what it is but there is something I love about getting blunt truthful feedback, it points me the right way as to what I need to work on, what I'm lacking, as it's harder with your own work to see it, I always get my husband to look at my work and see if anything looks a bit odd, and he knows that if he sugar coats it I get really annoyed xD like that is not helpful to me lol

When you live in a country where education is freely provided.. ~(￣▽￣)~ Of course it is hard to get into art schools because as Josh said, schools are picky. But at least the tuition is not a problem here.

Wanted to go to art school but then I got rejected multiple times because I never had the discipline to create a good portfolio. lol never-ending cycle of lack of discipline and then I joined the military and that did it. sort of. I do still want to go to art school for the experience and create connections. I'll just be a lot older than everyone else. I've been considering CGMA for awhile. It just sucks that they're not considered a "real" school to receive tuition assistance.

This came at the right time. I've been feeling a bit down alot about my art even though I've only just begun my journey. Super helpful video!

I started recently at a community college taking animation/game art. Ive learned some skills that have helped improve my art. Pieces that I feel I was missing. But I've also learned a lot from the internet. Before school, I taught myself. So I'd say if you choose school, still be ready to do your own research and learning on the side. Theres been times where I learned something in class that made something I was trying to learn finally click. And vice versa. Be willing to learn continuously. The feedback has also been a plus and helped me improve. I know famuly and friends mean well but they sometimes try to spare feelings instead of pointing out things you can work on when you ask. Consrructive criticism has helped me. Just my opinion....

great video, i see a lot of people in the comments are mentioning the high prices of art schools in the u.s. which are harsh, but !! you can also go to a public university / state university and major in art which is significantly cheaper than private art schools !! and always apply for financial aid, if you’re independent and don’t make a lot you can get a lot of (if not all of) the tuition covered :-) i do know though it is hard to commit to college especially if you can’t commute from where you live and have to move.. i just don’t want people to miss out on the opportunity to study art in a university setting because it’s so much fun, maybe even if for just a semester at ur local community college !

i discovered this channel bout a month ago and have been watching it pretty much everyday very inspiring and youre VERY good with your words you provide alot of insight that other artist dont know how to tap into as well the way you word things and take your time to really get to the root is incredibly useful and something that is lacking in the art community and truly an inspiration to many artist beyond just your artwork but as a person someone we can strive to and look up to

I only studied art at GCSE level (at secondary school). But never at the advanced level with a mentor. Even though I would be scared at critiques, I would just accept it and try my best. But I would hope my passion wouldn't go away but that's something I would need to work on keeping.

One of the things I value the most from architecture School is the hard work you put on everything. It's important to receive good feedback, but also taking into account how important it is to shape your own criteria when you judge your artworks. feedback is so hard to take for some ppl because they feel their whole effort being criticized, even when it's not about art, every thing we use a lot of energy working on hurts to kniw we "wasted time" working on smth that is worth nothing, and this last thing is NOT TRUE. everything we worked for a long time, is worth and it's good to have gotten so far because every second we spend learning and putting into practice, is a second we forged our skills for art school to work on us too, it's everybody's effort, something is being born by putting effort and taking feedback, and that something can be beautiful if we allow it to be, if we transform our teachers's words into the best it can become.

I just graduated with a BFA in painting and I can definitely say that if you find the right program with invested and interesting professors, it is absolutely worth it if you want to pursue a career in the arts! It takes years of hard work, but it’s amazing if you’re really committed to staying in the field of art☀️

Thank you for sharing this. It seems to me that art school is a touchy subject as I've so far seen very few artists who vocally encourage it if it's even mentioned (this is just based from what I've stumbled across). I personally loved my art classes, and what you have shared has been right on for my experience. Of course not every college and teacher/professor is equal, and that's where people looking on rather going to college or not would need to do their research to find what's right for them. Thanks again. This brought back many memories from art classes and the things I have learned.

well im a 18yo teen and honestly i struggled a long time choosing what i wanna do but the fact i finally decided to do it and risk it all brought a lot of joy and will to live and thanks to all the art youtubers that actually contributed a lot in my self education and the improvement of my skill i know that i have a lot of work to do to achieve what i want but yeah im really glad there is ppl like you who actually tell us objectively what there is and what's is waiting for us

I'm so glad you connected this to writing. I was self taught until ,my junior year of college when I was finally able to get into my creative writing minor. As much as we did get the "I'm published so know everything" vibe from creative writing classes sometimes, I did learn a lot when you kinda look under the pretention layer.I didn't bs it, I took all of my assignments seriously until like portfolio time because I majored in english and portfolio time was also research paper time. Honestly you have to fully process what you learn or you're gonna just think you learned nothing and then learn exactly what you were supposed to learn somewhere else and deem school and official courses "useless".I have no regrets majoring in English instead of creative writing because learning about existing literature rreally showed me how to break rules and what a writing style is and about audience and commentary.

I needed this. I've had so many tell me art school was a waste of time and tayt I could learn the same stuff online. But there are things I can't teach myself and I like guidence and certification. That and it's good to learn from others.

The thing I liked about going to school was just being in the Art room with other people.

I went to art school and the point about getting out of it what you put in is totally correct. I was really only serious about it for my final year there, so I didn’t get as much out of it as I should have. I kick myself for doing a lot of the partying and hanging out that I did when I should have been working.

I've only done the first year of art school yet, but I feel like my work has changed dramatically and I've had a lot of self development, I changed and my work changed. Besides that I've had an amazing time, and will probably have an amazing time, I choose the right school for me. I've done many things and tried a lot I feel like I would otherwise not try.

ive been going to college now for 3 terms and this fall will be my second year. overall my biggest takeaway yet is the fact that there isnt enough time per skill or topic to go deep into each aspect of say color theory class or painting ...it is what it is tho and it's a great guide to whats possible and touching on how to do it. as you mentioned the discipline is valuable as well as feed back and the knowledge shared even tho spread a bit quickly and thin. also the artists i've been shown has definitley expanded my view and life of and in art! great video thank you!!

I'm writing this here because I don't really feel like putting it anywhere else out there in life. Cheers. I've never felt more discouraged about pursuing something in life than I did about attending art school for concept art. People have suggested that art schools misguide, lack job prospects, and are a waste of money. Though not always expressed so bluntly, these passive criticisms, coupled with widespread online distaste for art education, led me into a life rut. Discouragement turned into fear, and that fear pushed me to pursue a degree in something "stable." Despite this, I eagerly immersed myself in figure art, painting, and graphic design as extra credits during college. Each art piece and class critique brought a fleeting joy, but I believed that joy was safer as a hobby. Fast forward 8 years, I graduated with a psychology degree I didn't truly desire, maintaining that "stable job" that feels like a never-ending treadmill. Come February, I'm set to begin art school for a master's in game development. It's time to fill that hole in my heart again. If it's a mistake, so be it. I'm prepared to learn, eager to heal, and ready for growth. The art classes from my undergrad were the last time I felt substantial growth; now, I'm ready to experience it again. Wish me luck.

I just recently graduated University in computer science, and i’ve found that the discipline I developed from doing that degree (which for me was super god damn hard) has helped me immensely now that i’ve gone back to learning art. Perhaps it applies to most any challenging thing but learning to push though when things get difficult is certainly the best thing i got from my degree. So i definetly agree in the sense that a lot of people are like “you don’t need a degree to work in programming/IT” and while they’re right i know it was the right decision for me

I actually found this video after taking the plunge and enrolling at CGMA, then deciding to look at reviews after the fact (as all responsible spenders do, right? 😅)! I recently got a new job that will allow me to attend art school, and you actually reinforced literally every reason I decided it would be worth the money! I've dabbled on and off with learning how to draw by teach myself the fundamentals but completely lacked the discipline. I bug my good friends for critique and guidance whenever I draw something I feel represents progress I've made. And unlike the other educational background that I have that I had to attend school for, I genuinely want to use this as a chance to improve my skills and build a body of work that I'm proud of! So this video has me hyped. Wow, I sound like an ad. I'M JUST EXCITED.

I'm currently 20 right now. And art is my dream, I've been creating, writing stories and making music as long as I can remember. I love it with a passion. I want to be an artist professionally more than anything. But I wasn't born into a rich family, my mom and dad are hard ass workers and they built everything they have. And I like the way I grew up, it taught me hard work pays off and to be driven to achieve your dreams. The only thing is I've been in a dark place for 6 years and I'm finally coming out of it. After alot of abuse and painful experiences I have gained wisdom. I also have had alot of beautiful experiences and it's built my strong character today. I dream to be in art school but I don't have the funds to. I had to move out when I was 18 and start working, scrounging and surviving. But I'm tired. I want to live, thrive and do art everyday of my life and read alot of books. I want to learn as much as I can. Maybe I could teach. But yeah i don't know id really love to go to art school because I know id make the best of it. I'm a natural born rebel though, I skipped alot of school and my dead end jobs but that's because deep down I know Im meant for more. I've been told by countless individuals that I have raw talent and make beautiful (acid paintings) work. And I certainly have the drive to do it. If someone can offer advice on how I can go to school with limited funds that'd be greatly appreciated.

Cgma sounds very cool and useful. I definitely agree that critiques were the best part of art school. Maybe studio space too. The accountability is great bc you can't just shunt your work to you next bit of free time. Being in the workforce makes you question how much you value your art practice. If it's not paying you like your job is it can be easy to give it up or push it off. And it's like they say, a body at rest stays at rest. School creates momentum, and a body in motion stays in motion

While they try to structure things for what they think students need, I think art schools definitely fall short in the preparation of their students for the industry. I agree with josh because what art school had given me at this point is a tough skin and a community. My first semester put me through so much but I wouldn’t have had it any other way. I also now have people like me who can physically be there for me. I came from a town where art wasn’t valued so moving to be physically with people who are dedicated to working and want to be better with you was extremely important to me.

I mean... the art students at places like Grand Central Atelier and Florence Academy of Art emerge living breathing masters.

I'm going to school for 3D animation, but the basic foundation art classes I had to take at my University before I could take the animation classes taught me a lot about discipline, and the critics are pretty helpful. If anything the only thing I really learned how to do was shade better and learn some new tricks in photoshop. However, much of the anatomy and basics I taught myself, although my school does offer those basic classes, it's just I didn't have the time and I wanted to take my animation courses.
