I tried one of my favourite writer's writing routines in n attempt to forge my own and salvage it from the chaotic mess that it currently is. Stick around to hear my thoughts and reflections and what I learnt from this.
Love always,
Dakota

Ive heard its a great idea to stop writing in the middle of a streak bc when you return you get excited about where you left off instead of coming back to something that you finished if that makes sense.

i feel like you might enjoy checking out the audiobook of notes from the underground read by Bob Neufeld, its the best match of a voice to a novel i've ever heard, it's a libravox recording available there (there's two versions there, one where multiple people read it, and one where it's all bob, you want the bob) and it's the first one to pop up in a youtube search at least from my search box. but even as someone who doesn't love audiobooks, i love this one

Someone I look up to once said, that we women should work, be creative and try new things according to out menstrual cycles. Because depending in what phase we're in, we have more or less energy, motivation, inspiration etc. Sticking to a routine that focuses on stable productivity every day is basically just working ahainst your body. I think that's why it often doesn't work for us^-^

What has worked for me to "find the headspace" after a break, be it next day after sleep or next hour after lunch or a walk, is to read through the last several pages you wrote and maybe even do a few edits. This almost always gets me back into the rhythm and zone of the work.

Hearing you talk about the way you write reminds me so much of myself. I used to write instinctively, following my cycles of inspiration. Since having kids, the only time I have during the day to write is in the afternoon during nap time. The necessity of this routine has taught me so much about disciplining myself and I've been more productive after graduating from university and having 3 kids than I ever was when I had ample free time! Your videos have been a big part of that productivity and have really motivated me to keep writing after graduating and starting my family, so thank you. I really appreciate your content ❤️

I empathise with burnout due to not wanting to stop when I'm on a roll. The best way I've combated with is from the book effortless by Greg McKeown, the strategy is to set a upper and a lower limit of what you can recover from in a day, treating it more like a marathon rather than a sprint. Currently, I have a Upper limit of four and a half hours and a lower limit of three hours. What's help me stick with it is the example he wrote to illustrate the point. The race to the South Pole between Scott and Amundsen wasn't even close, Amundsen beat Scott by a whole month and made it back safe, Scott and his team tragically died. One of the large contributing factors was Amundsen travelled no more than Fifteen miles per day no matter the weather, whereas Scott rested in the bad weather and went hell for leather on the good days, to make up for lost time, working to near exhaustion. Remembering this helps pull me back down to earth when all my mind want to do is run away from me into the void of "productivity". Doing this every day and staying consistent has produced way better results and no more burn out. The only thing is that It took a bit of playing around with the upper and lower time limits to find the sweet spot, but it's been well worth the hassle.

I think one of the main downfalls with any artists or aspiring artists, is that there are not enough hours in the day to record such creativity. And you know how it is - you've got to get your ideas down on paper or on your phone, even when you're walking down the street, because you'd forget them later on. But you've got the right ideas - you know your craft and you've got a love for aesthetic beauty that reminds me of Oscar Wilde's sentiments on artists, those who have suffered and those who love beauty. And btw, you've got some bottle with the bath clips - I'd be terrified if it was me, LOL. But you're young and pretty so you can pull it off.

My routine. I have a few depending on outside forces. This is my ideal: 1. Up at 4:30am. 2. 5am write: #5amWritersClub 3. At sun-up, I check the farm animals. 3. 10am or so: brunch 4. Write until 2pm +/- 5. Do to-do items 6. 5:30pm gather eggs and help with dinner 7. 6pm dinner and family time (Yes, I only eat two meals per day.) 8. 9pm read in bed 9. Try to never stay up past 11pm. I fail at this too often. Other days, the morning is taken up by farm stuff, especially at the height of summer when it gets super hot out 90⁰F to 100⁰F. On those days, just start my writing day at 7, 8, or 9am. I try to go to a cafe a couple of times a week as well. Usually right after brunch. It's good to change your environment, IMHO. Anyway. That's my general routine.

BUT... what happens the next morning?!?! Ha - as you say that may well be the true test. Well, either way that is interesting - cutting creativity intentionally short and then forcing review - it does seem like the demiurges of creativity might resent that haha - and perhaps thus return just as strong later for some wiser vengeance. I blindly read To The Lighthouse long ago and it was a discovery of subtle greatness for me, she's a fantastic writer, alas I never committed to reading her others - an abstinence turned ailment, perhaps. Love your channel and your love of writing, it heals me.

I love seeing that this routine helped you balance creative output and a healthy routine! I appreciate this kind of honesty as someone who struggles to balance sane levels of self-motivation and consistency with writing. It's very much an "all or nothing" approach for me too but I find this so unhelpful and messes with the growth that comes with setting at least some short time aside per day. I feel like my skills have dulled when I'm coming back from a period of having nothing written, which makes me even more self-critical. Is this true for you too? Also glad you picked up Rhys! She's my emotional support sad girl novelist and I hope you enjoy her (and post a video on Wide Sargasso Sea/Jane Eyre in the future, if I may be bold). Her personal life is very fascinating and plays heavily in her work in a way I greatly admire! Ursula K. LeGuin has such a well-loved schedule, and I think Octavia Butler has a good one too. Can't wait to see more!

Adhd is like the normal mind expect it has a lower baseline level of dopamine, leaving all or nothing mindset when it comes to writing yes neurotypical people can hyper fixate not as much as people who have adhd though. I suggest have cold showers (I know it sucks lol u will adapt) it levels dopamine more than even cocaine. Theres many others ways to help but thats a big one that rly helped me!
