So... I tried zero waste grocery shopping at Whole Foods. It was... not even hard!
Do you have access to a dedicated zero waste grocery store? Or just bulk bins in general? Or are you someone who has to do their best at place like Target, Walmart, or even Aldi?
I'm thinking I'll do HEB or Sprouts next, would love to hear what you would like to see (:

What about zero waste at Asian and Mexican market? It would be cool to showcase zero waste accessibility in different kinds of markets too.

And Indian grocery stores!

It depends on how big the market is....but yeah this is true. I find more zero waste options in Mexican and Indian stores....Korean Marts not so much. The thing is that Mexicans are extremely wasteful in everything. We tend to use plastic for two small items and sometimes we double bag them too. I realize this now and I cringe when I see my family members and grandmas doing it. Why have a plastic bag for a jug of milk or gallon of juice....we ain't walking more than to the car and from the car to our homes. I've trained my own family to reject bags as much as possible. I'm so proud of them.

@TATIANABUTTS
@TATIANABUTTS 4 года назад
B Davi Biodegradable means that it can be broken down by living things like bacteria and funghi. Degradable means the plastic breaks down into micro plastics. Although biodegradable materials return to nature and can disappear completely they sometimes leave behind metal residue, on the other hand, compostable materials create something called humus that is full of nutrients and great for plants. So if the packaging is truly BIO-degradable, it shouldn’t be harmful for the environment

In Austin, you can purchase your Pasta Zero-waste from Gourmet Texas Pasta. They are at most Farmer's Markets in the area. You just e-mail them your request and explaining your needs, and they'll package it special for you in paper bags. I've been doing this about two months. The owner is super nice and is happy to accommodate the zero-waste community.

Since Amazon bought WF, the amount of single use plastic wrap and packaging has increased. I have emailed them continuously and continue to get the same stock letter back. I now buy the items and swap the plastic out at the customer service course and leave them the plastic. As t seems my appeal for them to get rid of the plastic is futile.

I’m glad you did this and showed the sign that says you’re allowed to use your own bags/jars/containers in the bulk section. Apparently some Whole Foods (without the sign in the bulk section) have managers that say that you aren’t allowed to use your own bags because it’s against health code. I can’t help but believe if some stores adhere to this “rule” and others don’t that it’s not true and they just don’t want to deal with the hassle of taring jars, etc.

I know you said that keeping the bulk PLUs in your phone isn't the most convenient thing for your cashier, but as a cashier I'm impressed that you even have the codes, period!! Lmao there are too many people that come up to the register and either don't know the PLU/don't have it written down, or don't even know WHAT THEY BOUGHT. Annoys me beyond belief. So having your PLUs in your phone or written somewhere, even if not on the bag itself, is genuinely so helpful!

As a solution for a flour/ sugar type bag, You could take a bag that has a very close weave or tight grid And just dip it in heated beeswax, Kind of like how you can make your own DIY Food container covers. So same concept just use a bag Instead. I think you could use any kind of cloth bag as well because the bees wax will seal it up.👍🤷‍♀️😉

The difference between the bulk potatoes and the bagged is the size. The bagged are much smaller potatoes, so the bulk are typically the equivalent of 2-3 of the bagged.

For those in the New England area, Hannaford and Market Basket are typically good resources for zero-waste/minimal waste shopping. Hannaford can be a little bit pricier than Market Basket in some areas, and of course selection differs store to store, but on the whole Hannaford tends to have better produce. I know some stores for both chains used to have bulk bins, I haven't seen them in my area recently but I'm sure some stores still have them!

Pretty cool to see this, thanks! For me, I definitely have to weigh in price when it comes to some stable items, especially when it comes to potatoes and onions, also I'm lazy and hate chopping garlic, so I only have to buy 2 giant jars of it a year instead, for me it's worth it. And one other nice thing, the church I go to, we do a weekly free meal and give out boxes of food to those who need it within the community. Well, my church knows I'm vegan, so whenever meatless products come in, they set them aside for me to have, and unfortunately a lot of the people will complain about getting meat free options too... After seeing the price for some of the Beyond Meat products at the grocery store, I like that I get the occasional free item here and there.

Those plastic net bags are great as scrubbies and you can get a lot of use out of them. So if you can't find something without the net, you can re-purpose the bag afterwards. You can use them for general cleaning, washing up dishes or even as a loofa. Rinse and dry when you're done and keep using. It's not as ideal as loose produce, but that's one way to work around it.

I know it technically is in a plastic casing but if you use a dry erase marker or a chalk markers on your jars and containers, itll be easier for both you and the cashier. I'm pretty sure if you look up chalk markers on Amazon you can find some in cardboard packaging, and they last forever. So even though you did buy plastic. If you're only using it for writing a few numbers or letters at a time it wouldnt be super wasteful because if you get a pack of 10 you probably wont ever finish 1 for a year or 2.

I agree, I would love to see you shop in Mexican grocery stores. The ones around me have unpackaged fruits/ veggies like mushrooms, fresh herbs, bulk cereal, package less candy, bulk nuts, fresh bread unpackaged, premade food, bulk salsas, even bulk things like cheeses and sour creams. I've brought my own container to grab some salsa they did give me a sticker for the weight tho. The two grocery stores I'm talking about are El Super and Northgate Market in the Los Angeles area. I think it would be cool if you could give Mexican Groceries a try and more exposure as its very affordable to buy package free from them.

I used to work at Sprouts! I saw you'd mentioned trying to do package-free shopping there. They usually have package-free snap peas, and often have on-the-stalk brussels sprouts, as well as loads of other veggies with no or very low packaging. A variety of peppers, chilis, mushrooms (not just portobello). Haven't seen any butter lettuce without a package there. You won't usually find any bulk liquids such as oil, soap, vinegar, coconut aminos, etc, and I haven't ever seen bulk dry pasta. Huge selection of granola, nuts, dried fruit, candy, rice, quinoa, oats, other grains, and spices! My store carried some less-common dry bulk as well like pine nuts, carob chips, citric acid, dried lavender, and even some bulk teas. Small amount of package-free (or with a single sticker or paper slip) soaps. At my store, we did allow people to bring in their own containers but you had to know the tare-weight of them. Can't say whether all locations will allow that though. If anyone has any questions about package-free at sprouts, or anything about them really, I'd be happy to answer! Though, I worked there about two years so my info may be slightly out of date

We recently moved to Rochester, NY and they have an awesome farmers market that is supported 100% by the city's government and their prices are awesome, sooo affordable. Produce doesn't even come with the barcode stickers since they come right from the farm and there are tooons of farms around. I'm just so happy that at least I can do better with the produce, but I'm having a harder time with other stuff because of the prices and we are on a very tight budget.

I used to work at Whole Foods! FYI: The BYOC rule depends on the region, so where you're at in the SW region it's allowed but up here in the PNW region it is not. Potential hack would be using the compostable hot bar/salad bar containers for your bulk items. As long as you tell the cashier ringing you out it's no big deal, I encouraged customers to do this. Also, I have seen package free brussel sprouts there before, it's just a bit hit or miss.

A lot of times seasonal produce will be package free. Example you can get corn in plastic wrap year round, but when it's in season they will have bins without packaging. I live in a rural area and I tend to eat a lot more veggies in the summer when I can do a CSA or go to the market.

The whole foods here is across town and in a really expensive area - I always feel like I'm trespassing when I go there so I don't do it often. We do have a natural grocer's nearby and an asian market that I like better.

I am so suprised that you are suprised to find package free fruit and veggies, especially lettuce. Here where i live, in Croatia, everything has a plastic free option in every grocery store, only the smaller berries and such are in plastic. Nuts are always in bulk as well. On the farmers market as well, every thing is package free. The bad thing is that most people just put them in a free thin plastic bag, but many also bring their own 😄 Your challenge would be quite easy to do in Croatia😂

My local coop allows you to bring in Mason jars- they’re great for spices. You weigh your mason jar and write the beginning weight so they don’t charge you for the mason jar weight!

Shelbi, I shop low waste at Whole Foods and I just take a picture of the PLU number label with my phone and show it to the cashier. Makes things so much easier! Great video, thank you for these!

@@monikakalinowska3499 it's a really environmentally-friendly sunscreen. Not tested on animals and doesn't contain that ingredient almost every other sunscreen has that's killing our coral reefs (I forget the name of the ingredient lol sorry!). So for people who have money to spare it's great thing to use it towards helping the planet over frivolous purchases :)

during the fall when brussel sprouts are in season trader joes sells them unpackaged on the stock

Honestly I would buy them in bulk whenever they come like that and freeze them so I can have them year round. Obviously that wouldn't logistically possible for some people but if you have the freezer space/money then why not

Jovial pastas in the box are made with completely compostable packaging. The window is made from wood pulp. It’s a great brand to look for. Also, you can get it online.

When brussel sprouts are in season Trader Joes sometimes have them package free on the stalk! At least here in CT, not sure about TX. But worth a shot to check maybe!

If you ever find yourself in the northeast us you absolutely have to do a shop at wegmans! It's like a trader Joe's and it's the closest upstate NY gets to a healthy low waste store

I live in Canada and love shopping at the Bulk Barn for most things, spices included. I use the Bernard 250ml wide-mouth mason jars for my spices, this store encourages bringing your own glass containers (sometimes offering 20% off of purchases) - win! win! I prefer storing directly into the glass jar the spice will live in, rather than cloth or nylon bags...washing spices like turmeric or chili powder out of them is very difficult!
