Thank you for this one, I'm crying. When my grandmother was moved to the nursing home for her dementia, I would come every week and read a chapter of Beowulf. It became our thing for nearly a year, until she passed away, and other patients would join in so it became a pseudo-bookclub. This brought back some good memories.

In the original text it, the carvings on the hilt depicted the flooding of the Earth and the destruction of the Biblical giants, and i can see glimpses of that at 9:41. Awesome attention to detail. Jackson Crawford, a renowned Norse expert, has described Norse stories by saying they operate on "dream logic" and that is the best description of Norse stories I've ever heard. Luckily there is another sword that can kill anything right here!"

Few details missed - One: Grendel's mother tried to feed Beowulf to her pet beasts before fighting him herself, and she fought with a knife of her own. Two: Beowulf for a metal mast to the dragon fight and it got welded to his face. Ok, sure that is gruesome, but it was an important detail. Three: Every instance of the sword breaking when Beowulf tried to smack the muster was left out. Why? There is a deliberate interruption of the dragon fight to mention it tends to happen. Four: The dragon's smoke and fangs were also toxic. Fifth: Beowulf didn't rip Grendel's arm right off, they fought their way around the hall breaking most of it apart. Source: I just had a class on this.

I don't remember where I heard that Unferth was a pro Beowulf mole planted to set him up to tell the story of that sick sea monster fight, but if he also handed off a cool sword to him, that would support the theory. Also I remember listening to this via audiobook and I do not recall the text being this incomprehensible.
@JakeDoubleyoo
@JakeDoubleyoo 6 месяцев назад
Unferth was likely another legendary figure with his own stories circulating about him. His initial exchange with Beowulf follows the Germanic literary trope of the "flyting", where two famous characters insult each other by presenting their deeds in the worst possible light to make them look bad. There was likely more context behind Unferth killing his brothers, but the Beowulf poet was only interested in making Beowulf look cool, so we don't get the other side to that story. Unferth giving Beowulf his ancestral sword was his aplogetic gesture, and an admission that Beowulf is the better man.
