It's finally time to transform the Defender into a proper overlanding vehicle! In this episode, I finish up the interior build, and then head to Germany to the ‪@Frontrunneroutfitters‬ workshop. That's where the magic happens: a water tank, a rooftop tent, a tailgate table, an awning, a shower cubicle, and a lot of other awesome gadgets get fitted onto the Defender. Wait until the end to see the full set-up!
Another big thank you goes to Rayo 4x4 in Wroclaw, Poland (rayo4x4.pl/main-eng.html), for fitting the Front Runner drop-down table perfectly on my tailgate!
In the next episode, I finally set off for my big overlanding adventure... Subscribe and stay tuned!

As someone who has been driving 4x4's for [*cough*] 30 years, I honestly think you have done an amazing job with setting up your first rig. Choosing good quality equipment, and only what you need, is the best approach. That is the advantage of seeking experienced advice then going to an outfitter with a clean slate and a good plan. You also have the benefit of not being part of a community of other 4x4er's to compete with egos of who has the biggest and best 😆 Also, as a Land Cruiser driver I'm not offended by your choice of a Defender. I have wanted one since I was a kid but have always let my head rule the decision about buying one, instead of my heart, which is still pining 🙁. I don't get involved with the Toyota v Land Rover argument. I have owned many different brands and they all have their good and bad points. The main thing is that you enjoy where they take you. Finally, I love your videos, they're so enjoyable to watch. The way you speak to the camera is so personable and cheery. There's never a dull moment. I'm so happy I stumbled upon your channel 😃

I'm a Land Rover lover, but I respect Land Cruisers as the incredible machines they are. The only thing (older) Land Rovers have an edge over Land Cruisers on is the ease of working on them if you're relatively inexperienced as a mechanic. Land Cruisers offset that with better reliability. I don't really understand why people don't just accept that it's almost entirely about personal preference, and stop arguing. Overlanders who like Land Rovers must surely accept that the 70 Series Land Cruisers is the obvious choice if you're buying a brand new vehicle now. Maybe a Grenadier when they're properly on the market.

From my own experience, you will sleep more times inside than in the roof top tent. I have both sleeping options in my LR Defender 110, and to be honest we prefer sleeping inside. Roof top tent is perfect when you stay in one spot for a few days. Setting up tent is fast, but setting it down takes some time and experience, since on Defender you won't have easy access to all the zippers, etc due to car's height. Our tent is 140cm wide, same as sleeping option inside the car, tent noise in windy situations is also problem. Some time ago I've made short video about roof top tent pros and cons from my perspective. Anyway, i wish you best luck and great adventures with your truck.

Eva, some important things to have would be (especially if frontrunner is helping or sponsoring your rig) is a Long Range fuel tank- extra 60-120L, frontrunner aluminum gull windows (will make your vehicle much safer from getting rid of the glass) remove the spare off the rear door, and get a off road bumper with dual swivel mounts and move the jerry can to the other from the roof- you want to keep the weight on the roof minimal or else you may get spooked by the body roll around corner and off road, and then a under seat frontrunner safe. Also carry spare fuel pumps, axle gasket, diff gaskets, wheel bearings, and bushings. make sure you have a good tool box- but not too big. Love the build, and congratulations!
@OverlandingNL
@OverlandingNL 2 года назад
I have the feeling the water tank takes up the space the long range fuel tank would take up though? Depending on where she will go with it the long range tank (or jerry cans for that matter) are needed though. At least not around Europe.

@@OverlandingNL There are tons of LR fuel tanks to use that can either replace the existing, or go on either side of the landys underbody- I believe the FrontRunner one is a secondary tank mounted on the right side underneath.

Tip: when it rains, the rainwater will drop off from your roof top tent on to your ladder! So when it rains and you need to go get in our out, you will get water in your neck and down your back! We had same issue!!!! We used piece of tarp that uses the bending arms and a small tie and let the tarp drop over the ladder! Not ideal in windy conditions but it keeps you from getting wet! Happy camping!! Like to know the electric setup. Ps not all TOYO owners are LARO haters!! We think we have a nice overland truck and by the looks it it yours is a mint overlander aswell!! Hi Eva, congratulations. A few comments about the build. Don't leave any sharp edges. These could be taken off with an angle grinder or any suitable way. The catch for you tailgate table could have a block of rubber or balsa each side to prevent injury or damage. The board that folds open to provide a passageway could be cut across perhaps a third of the length from the back (with the required hinges added). This would allow you to open and close whether you are in or out of the vehicle. A cut out of one sheet for hand access (preferably along the cross cut) will allow you to open it from the inside. Research and monitor your off road max loads inside and on the roof. Keep in touch with minimalist ideals. Always plan to have the capacity for spare space and weight so you can shop or pick stuff up. Be safe with the trerrible European floods! Park High. Keep a tow rope. You cannot use your vehicle to rescue someone else if you lose it. Don't get sucked into badge wars. A defender does not make sense for everyone's lifestyle. They still love to dream through your adventures if you let them. I love listening to the influences in your well spoken English. Do I detect an Australian influence too?

Hello eva I know my way around defenders a bit and especially with the 110 3-door there is a lot of wasted space just in front of the rear wheels. There are lockers you can put there and it will give you an extra 80 l storage capacity for fuel or water jarrycans. So far lovely to build very capable truck good choice.

@@SaintNyx 2.4 TDCi. It's at 97k miles now. Shorter journeys and winter take it to 29, long journeys and summer it's 31. Motorways at 60mph I've had 36 but that's unusual. I get an extra 1mpg running on premium diesel and it does sound smoother but not enough extra for me to want to pay for it. That sort of fuel economy isn't unusual for the 2.4 Puma engines. It's also about the same as you get in a medium wheelbase low roof Transit of a similar vintage and identical engine. I'm working it out based on how much fuel I put in compared to what the trip counter says, and I zero it each full up.

Really great truck Eva! Of course there are a million opinions about how to deck these out because there are a million people who have a million different expectations for the use of their vehicles... I think a Landrover is a fine choice for Europe, but for somewhere remote, like Australia I would have to go with the Landcruiser, just for the straight out reliability, Ive owned both. Now for some tips because... internet Light-bars on the roof are not a great idea, unless you're rock-hopping, the bugs are attracted to the light and end up aiming for your windscreen, also any mist of dust will be lit up right in front of your face making it really hard to see, better to put them in the front under the bonnet line. It's easy to drag the back when off-road so I fear your little tap may take a beating there. And finally, those tires (pun) have got to go, don't throw them out just put them on when you know you are seriously going to need them. A nice set of road tyres will make your life even more beautiful. (I recommend Dunlop Adventurers or something similar)n Best of luck!

Here is another tip. I learned it off roading in a LR Series 3 I drove to Moscow in. The long wheelbases can't do the same climb angles as the short wheelbases. I took mine through a ditch and on the way up, out of it, my rear mounted wheel caught on the lip of ditch and pretty well bent the rear door in two. I was able to remove everything and hammer it back in place, pretty much. I guess that's why the military mount the spare wheel on either the bonnet or the side. Seeing your nice rear table made me think of warning you. A bonnet mounted wheel doesn't interfere with your forward vision.

@@petermiddo If you have watched any of Eva's videos, you would realize how brave and adventurous she is. She may not be currently traveling to locations that are considered "dangerous" by much of the Western world, but she is still doing something extremely courageous. Starting solo-female van life is quite scary (especially when you know nothing about cars). Eva is my biggest inspiration as a woman
@petermiddo
@petermiddo 2 года назад
@@awilderose I understand how scary it is for women as solo travellers and, while I'm a big unit, I always do all in my power to ensure that any woman feels safe around me. And my comment isn't to devalue Eva, you, or any other woman, ever. I'm no better, but I'm also no worse. I just am. I am not sure I will be following Eva. I know she has a million followers on RU-vid and I have none, myself and my family have been *heavily* involved in recreational off roading for 40+ years and instrumental in making it as safe as possible through the creation of the driving training courses that exist. Worldwide. We literally created them in a team. Aso, my father literally started the 4wd shows. From that, we've got (& asked for) NOTHING. I have struggled my whole life with a disability which has greatly affected me financially. When I had a total loss of a much loved 4wd through a manufacturer fault and not got any insurance for it, that nearly broke us. It still is extending our financial resources. I've also worked with Special Forces soldiers, who literally are some of the bravest people you'll ever meet. To watch Eva get given AU$40-60,000 worth of gear and then drive through an open field. It's a little annoying to watch. It devalues me even more. I'd love someone to give me AU$30,000 (~ 15,000 Euro) to buy a unique land rover - purpose built for the Australian Army - and really go off roading (in a sensible way) so that I could be given that gear to strut around with.

Eva please remember that you've changed the center of gravity a lot, and compromised the stablility of vehicle in offroad situations, Roofrack is probably rated to 100kg ON ROAD, and you probably have something like 90kg already on it. OFF Road rating for Defender would be something like 60kg max, worth checking on. Cheers from Landcruiser owner :P

@Px4164
@Px4164 2 года назад
@@pieterOD yes it is higher, but not twice. my TLC has 100kg, defender has 136, still I'd never put more than 50 there it just brings down the offroad capacity to SUV level. but hey, if that's for looks and easy gravel roads still works. one thing for sure, less stuff, less weight more safety.

A girl after my own heart. Love the Defender though. My current live-in camper is a 2WD VW Touran but it suits me and the dogs and can get most places I need it to for now. A good driver with front wheel drive and good tires and clearance can get most places a 4WD can get to.

absolutely true - and when you get stuck there is hope a real 4WD (or a tractor, to be realistic) can come in for you. Offroad people say if you have the best offroad car in the world, it will get much farther than anyone else, meaning when it gets stuck - and it will - you can't hope for anyone come to you :) Kudos for you having the dogs with you :)
