I work with kids everyday and I've always loved working kids. Biggest piece of advice I could ever give anyone who has to deal with kids is just to always agree with them. You don't have to lie, you can agree without the lie. A simple "I do look like Sadness, don't I! The sweater would be too hot in this weather so I thought shorts would be more comfy. Do you want to take a picture?" No lies, and you've distracted them from further questioning by offering a photo op!

Alright so I'm part of a group that visits children in the hospital. So I (poorly) decided that I would go as Azula since Avatar the Last Airbender is a kid's show. Well I was there with some Disney Princesses. So after a while parents are like "Oh there's Elsa...and Anna...and look it's Mulan!" There was no Mulan in this group. So there were kids coming up to me like "Oh can I get a picture Mulan?!" I just rolled with it. I'm hoping somewhere out there, someone who knows who Azula is looks at that picture and stares in horror. "That was not Mulan."

I actually have an experience involving children and cosplay that actually had a happy ending, wow-- I once cosplayed as Dipper Pines, and a small child saw me, got really excited and called for me. I almost didn't hear him until he called a second time, and I ran down like right away. This smol one was so chill and really respectful, he was like "wow I can't believe it!!! You have the journal with you!!!" and I was like, "yup! I can show ya a couple pages if you dare" and he was like "I DARE I DARE" and so I showed him the first couple pages, dramatically slammed the book once he tried to look further and I was like "that's all you get, sorry" and after that interaction the mom came up to me and was like "hey thank you so much for stopping, no one has really been stopping for him and this really made his day" and my heart oh my gosh

The only time I've upset a child was when I was cosplaying The Marrionnete from FNaF. A dad with a little son and daughter walked past and the son pointed out my cosplay to the dad. The dad asked if he could get a picture of me with his son, and of course I said yes. The entire time the conversation was happening and pictures were being taken, the daughter was hiding behind her dad's leg. I took off my mask and waved at her, but that scared her even more. Then I remembered, my cosplay incorporates gloves with long extensions that look like claws. I'm dressed in all black, white stripes on my legs and arms, with long black claws. Literally the stuff of night mares for a 4 year old girl. Fun times

At my work we have an event where we invite princesses to visit everyone and I was a non-specific princess in a gold dress. All weekend I got kids screaming "BELLE" at me and in that moment I became Belle. I WAS Belle. Belle was me. Random princess who? Nah, man, I'm Belle from France. Kids are always so sure when they decide something is correct, it's so sweet. I get it all the time at cons too!!

I was Cosplaying fluffle puff from my little pony and this little girl ran up to me a huge smile on her face and said 'hi pinkie pie!!!' And I just completely switched characters and totally embodied Pinkie Pie taking pictures and playing with her how pinkie would until another little girl came over and said 'that's not pinkie stupid' and it made us both sad

After seeing the child get upset, I would have just been like, "But I look a lot like Sadness, don't I? I really like Sadness! Do you like her, too?" -- that way you don't make the kid feel bad for being wrong, and you get the kid to start talking about things she likes. Usually if you can get a kid to talk about stuff that excites them, they stop being sad and start getting excited~

parents can honestly be so pushy at cons, it's one of the hardest things I've encountered cosplaying. they kind of think that it's Disneyland and the cosplayers are only there for photos, and then make it their mission to get their kid to take a picture with as many cosplayers as possible, which in turn tends to make them hunt out every character they can think of and sometimes misunderstand your character. they also don't take into account that you're a human being, and you might be busy or not be the character you thought they were, and have your own view of what's happening for the photo. it really isn't your fault at all as much as it sounds like another con soccer mom who is trying to get her daughter's picture with as many characters as possible without thinking it through.

Once I was cosplaying Bill Cipher and my friend was dipper, and we were resting after a long day of con. I had my wig off, my friend had her vest off, and it was pretty obvious we were resting and waiting to be picked up, and this mom and her kid come up to us and are like "my kid likes gravity falls, can we get a picture?" She didn't even ask nicely. We kinda look at eachother and shrug (we were like twelve at the time and it was our first con). This fucking mom just taps her foot and waits while her kid is looking awkward as hell. We stand, I have to put my wig on and get my cane, and it's just a nightmare. She gets the picture, grabs her kid and just kinda walks away. Thanks soccer con mom.

On my first actual con in cosplay I went as Zenitsu, and I don't think Demon Slayer is a hit with little kids. At one point some mom came up to me with her toddler son, clearly not knowing who I'm supposed to be, but she liked the costume and asked for a photo. The kid, however, looked completely uninterested in me or in posing for photos. So for a moment he's just running around like kids do, the mum is chasing him, phone in hand, trying to get both of us in frame and I'm just standing there awkwardly because I already agreed for the photo so I guess I have to deliver. I think she gave up before getting a good shot though

I had these two young girls who followed me for like half the length of the convention center trying to take a photo with me and I couldn't hear them because I had an ear infection and everything was hard to hear during that con. luckily their mom was able to get my attention and the two girls got a photo with a grey skinned orange horned fairy haha! Something like this happened to me once at a con. I was cosplaying Trickster Jane from Homestuck and I had this huge lollipop in my hand and this litle girl walks up with her dad and says "Daddy look! She's a lala loopsy" or something like that. She asked me for a picture and so I did, but I covered up my symbol because I didn't want the kid to later realize I wasn't. I didn't say anything to the kid, I just said that she could take a picture with my and then said thank you after. Then my sister was so confused after the picture why a little girl wnted my picture. Yours was way worse tho, I'm glad I didn't say anything to her after hearing this.

I lived in Japan for 12 months on student exchange a couple years back. my host sisters and the eldest's son (he's 3) took me to Universal Studios In Osaka where they had the wonderful wizarding world of harry potter... it was still really early in my trip so my Japanese is basic at best. there is no way I could say... understand a small child... anyways, I buy a Gryffindor cloak and wear it for like the whole day, being awesome... (I should note, I have chocolate brown hair and that particular day humidity just had it like *bleh*) it was all good at universal studios coz everyone is dressed like this, we're all weirdos... no. it was coming home on the train. of course, i wore the cloak and some girl in her little school uniform, I'd say probably no older than 6, comes up to me and starts talking at a million miles an hour. I can't understand a word she's saying except for the fact she's calling me, "Harmonie". I turn to my host sister (who is good at English and did a lot if translating for me) needing help so bad and before we got the chance to say anything my little 3-year-old 'host nephew' says something along the lines of "This is Mika" (coz that's what he called me) "not Harmonie. Mika is Australian." he was so proud of himself but that girl was heartbroken. I was like, 'oh my god what do I do?' 'this kid almost wants to cry,' 'she's probably only seen the first movie.' 'how do I fix this?' 'I can't.' my host sisters tell me we're at our train station and need to get off the train. so I have no idea how that kid ended up...

Oh dude on the note of bad harry potter cosplays-I have a complete Luna Lovegood cosplay-robes and everything, and I wore it to a harry potter festival, but I didn't wear the wig because it was 95 degrees. But still full ravenclaw robes and such. I had my hair in a dark brown bob at the time, I wear glasses, and I had a full face of feminine makeup. Someone came up to me and asked if I was dressed as snape. While I was wearing a skirt. So I was like trying to be polite and I went "oh sorry no" and their face just fell. I don't know how they got snape from it though? but it was insanely awkward.

Harry Potter cosplays are notorious for this. I dressed up as a Slytherin school girl (no specific character) and everyone kept calling me Hermione because of my wavy brown hair. I just act insulted and "how dare you call me that mudbloods name!" Usually you can tell by their blank stare they never actually read/watched the series.

You didn't screw up, kids need to learn how to feel disappointment and not to get their hopes up. It's a normal stage in early development and you have nothing to feel bad about. They'll also learn to form their own opinions seeing as you didn't look much at all like sadness. Lying to the kid to keep them happy is holding that development back and usually is what results in bratty behaviour down the road. Next year this child won't have a negative reaction to a similar scenario need the occasion arise.

I think all costumers have been in a situation like this where we disappointed a kid. It can definitely affect you for a while, but with every experience like that you learn new things. Sure, it sucks, but hey, next time we might know how to prevent it. If not, it'll just keep happening and we'll keep learning. Don't let the cosplay community say you're an awful person because you upset someone one or two or twenty-five times. Any experienced cosplayer knows that kind of stuff just happens and sometimes there's nothing you can do about it.

I've done pretty much the same thing. I've done Lapis' Bob outfit for the last 2 years at sdcc, and both years parents think I'm Sadness. I know last year I just painted my middle cause i didn't want to pull my tights up super high (sat for like an hour in front of a fan getting the various layers of sealer to dry cause i didn't want the paint coming off at all), and this little girl comes up to me as I'm hanging out and asks for a picture! I agreed and she ends up putting her lil arm around my middle and my first reaction is to gently warn her about my body paint JUST IN CASE i didn't seal it enough cause i was super paranoid about it and i didn't want to get any on her. And she ends up looking really confused and I end up putting 2 and 2 together cause i realize that this little girl really thinks i have blue skin. I don't think I upset her I think she was just more confused than anything but still i felt really bad afterwards cause i thought that i ruined the illusion that yes, i really am this character

I had similar convention experiences with children in Germany and i think it is very difficult to speak for a country with a population of 80 million people like they all behave in the exact same way. I like to think that thoes "lies" are more like a game of play and pretend cause it does not actually concern sirious topics. I'm from Germany and i think it is okey to embrase those wonders of childhood. Have you ever seen the dreamworks movie 'Rise of the guardians'? I think for kids beliving in things actually makes them real (for adults too... look at religion all over the world they can't all be correct can they? nothing against religion i think it can help people a lot as long as nobody gets hurt) Isn't one of the reasons to cosplay that it makes the characters come to life and that it makes us feel like we are part of a fictional world? :)

1. I worked with children at a festival in my town where I was Wendy from Peter Pan. I have naturally light brown hair but dyed green half way down (from it growing out) and I was hired too short of notice to buy a wig. Since it was mostly charity work they didn't mind but they children sure did! I blamed it on Tinker Bell and kept to that story. 2. When ever I cosplay Sapphire from Steven universe, I get recognized as the Ice Queen from Adventure Time with Fiona and Cake from a handful of kids. My tactic is to say a "cold" pun of some sort because it applies to both characters and it makes the kids laugh.

This happened to my friend: Our group was cosplaying Final Fantasy characters and he was Cloud Strife. A little boy walked up to him and asked "Are you from Yu-Gi-Oh!?" I guess it was the hair. My friend replies with "Sorry no, I'm from Final Fantasy, it's a video game." We all had to sit and watch as his little face slowly scrunched up and he started crying, there was no parent in sight so we're just there all helpless as this small child in front of us cries his eyes out and we don't know how to comfort him. I guess he was just embarrassed, but omg it was so heartbreaking.

Dealing with kids is so finicky even more so if you arent accustomed to it. even happens out of cosplay and your wearing a different hair colour(usualy bright or pastel mermaid colours) Learned that the hardway. its a two way thing when it happens. and a learning experience...a hard one. x.x

I was at MomoCon 2016 dressed as Star Butterfly with my girlfriend who was in costume as Dipper and this two-or-three-year-old boy with a cast on his arm came up and his parents asked us to sign his cast and take a picture with him. We did (ofc) and his cast had signatures from all sorts of superheroes and cartoon characters and he hugged us afterwards and it was quite possibly the cutest experience of my life

I had a similar deer-in-the-headlights moment with a child while I was in steven universe cosplay pretty recently. I was cosplaying Blue Diamond and this little boy who couldnt have been older than 6 sees me and his eyes go huge like "are you blue diamond??" and I say I am and he starts talking about how much he loves the show and then. then he starts asking me in-character questions and I have to come up with answers on the spot because with kids its disneyland rules- the answer is never "I don't know" or "there's no reason for that," you have to have an answer ready. I had about half a second to come up with an answer to "Sometimes in the show you have a hood on and it covers your eyes so you cant seee your eyes, how come you do that sometimes?"

These things just happen. Ive seen this happen so many times at cons and Ive witnessed the flip flop of cosplayers not knowing what to do or cosplayers just making the kids happy. I use to work for princess parties and I was cosplaying Nico from Love Live at a convention last year. A girl thought I was a princess, so I just rolled with it. Lol

I cosplay for myself, not for children or for men or for my mom like a beauty pageant or for anyone else. It's a hobby for ME, and if a kid gets upset cuz I'm Zelda and not Peach then so be it. I'm not a paid actor, I'm not a Disney worker and I'm not a baby sitter to keep your kid happy. Sorry if I sound harsh but that's just me. There's a reason why I don't have kids.

I had one of these happen to me lmao. I had a little 5 year old come up to me when I was dressed as Sapphire from SU, and I guess she was shy, cause her mom crouched down to her and smiles and says something, and she turns and slowly walks up to me and goes "are you Elsa?" and I was so nervous and scared that I immediately said "Yea!" And her eyes lit up like a Christmas tree. we got a picture and the mom turned to me and mouthed a thank you as they walked away. it was absolutely horrifying lol, I had never been more scared to disappoint someone in my life 😂

Personally, I think that you should be honest to kids. Most people think that kids are "innocent" and stupid, but they aren't. If you aren't the character they think you are, then you can at least feel good about not lying straight to a child's face just so that you feel better. Sure, the child may be upset, but in the end they may be grateful that you didn't treat them like a little kid. Mind you, I'm no expert with kids, I'm just a teenage cosplayer who has had thing like this happen to me one too many times, and I can always tell when the adult is lying about their costume. (And by this I mean when was younger.)

Lumination but this is for video viewing only I was just thinking of this. I hate lying to a child and I don’t like children unless they are part of my family or my half sisters. Lying to child is wrong to me, I don’t care if they upset. I don’t want to disappoint them when they find out later that I’m not who said I was or went along with.

I'd imagine that the mum wasn't caught up enough to understand exactly what Sadness looks like, only that she's blue and her daughter loves her. She probably just told her daughter that AnyaPanda was Sadness and the daughter (while she could have had doubts about it) accepted it as true because like most 4 year old children she blindly believes exactly what her mum said. Or at least, that's my justification of it xD

Ok I'm gonna sound harsh and I'm just trying to be honest but what you did was good. I know it's hard to break a kid's heart but it's bound to happen. I have to do this to my nieces a lot because they have become very mean due to the fact that now that their older people won't lie about who they are and that they like the same thing as them. I was also treated this way when I was young. My mom didn't want me to have to experience the world all at once and made me learn about brutal honesty. It's ok to teach them when they're young that not everything goes their way. It's the whole "everyone wins" stuff all over again. Children deserve to know that not everything goes their way and that not everyone wins and that not everyone has a happy life. I learned about death when I was around 3 and took it well. All I'm trying to say is that. It's ok to tell the truth to them. It might break their heart but it's ok. You've had your heart broken before. It's better to learn young rather that you experience it later in life and not know what to do. So please just hear me out.

I had this happen to me once. Me and my boyfriend had cosplayed Evergreen and Elfman from Fairy Tail and this little girl of about 8 comes up and askes if I was fairy from tinker bell. Keep in mind that Evergreen wears a green dress and has at some points pink fairy wings. So I kneel down and tell this 8 year old girl that I'm not a fairy from tinker bell and I see her face just fall. She then notices my Elfman next to and I see her face light up. Then she realized who we were and ended up getting a picture sitting on Elfman's shoulders. I'm so happy that she realized who we were because I can't deal with sad or disappointed children well

The closest I can relate is how children always, ALWAYS shout either half-way across the store or like right next to me "THAT PERSON HAS BLUE HAIR!!!" and if they're close enough to me or they come up and are like "why do you have blue hair?!" I tell them that I am a faerie, which then they usually just giggle and go back to their parents. Or that time I was wearing a Deadpool hoodie while grocery shopping and some child shouted "SPIDERMAN!!" like right directly into their moms' ear, and I said "not quite, but close enough!".

When I was in high school, a club I was a part of organized this annual daddy-daughter dance. We were dressed up really nice and selling tickets or concessions or walking around the dance floor during the event. None of us were dressed as certain characters or anything, but little girls are no doubt going to ask you if you are their favorite Disney princess. And we just said "yes, I'm totally Belle from beauty and the beast" and then they ask for a hug and we go our separate ways. You just don't have the heart to tell a little three year old that you aren't their favorite princess even if you don't look anything like them. The point is that they think you are. And they'll get to hug or dance with their favorite character for one night and it is so magical for them to get to do that.

I cosplay Sans a lot and I get recognized by a lot of people when I am Sans. One year they had a ketchup stand with little packets, so I grabbed a handful and shoved them in my pocket. Walking around the con to the vendors I got called out by this 13-16 year old. So I said "Hey Kiddo. I gotta present for ya." And of course they are like "????" I handed them a ketchup packet and I swear to you I have never seen someone's face light up so much over a condiment. They were so giddy and were like "This is the best day of my life."

When I started with cosplay for the first time in 2012, I was Rosalina from Super Mario Galaxy, havin' this big blue dress, blonde hair and a crown. The children which saw me said "Ohh that's Cinderella! No, it's Sleeping Beauty! It's a disney princess!" My thoughts "YOU'RE ALL WRONG!!! Except princess tho... x'D ". I went to the kids and smiled and said to them "Yes I'm a princess!", the kids smiled and wanted to hugged me. Then I realize that these children don't know about video gaming or something so I gave them a simple way, even tho I was very irritated about what they saw me like that I didn't was.

Knowing me, I probably would have tried to salvage the situation and show her an image of the character while explaining to the child how awesome the actual character you were cosplaying as was to get them excited again. Not sure how much that would actually help salvage the situation, but I'm sure that might have happened if I was in the situation 'cause I have younger siblings and I have experience trying to salvage their broken hopes and dreams as I have terrible habit of unintentionally doing that.

As a parent I think you did fine. You taught the child a bit of what cons are like. You showed honesty. Important to teach others. Keep in mind kids are resilient. They bounce back fast. Five minutes later that same child was probably over joyed on the dealers floor finding a favorite t shirt. And five seconds after that probably found another character they liked for another photo op. Kind of what makes cons cool? If it was one of my boys I would have been like, "Okay she's not dressed as Sadness, my bad. Say bye to the nice lady and lets go see what else we can find." And they'd been fine with it. I would rather someone be honest to my child than lie.

Don't be sorry for that. It's not like it's going to be a trauma for that girl, it was just her mom who made a misstake - not like she had been waiting for Santa for weeks and then you told her "there is no Santa- are you stupid"! You can't protect children from disappointment and if you do, they won't be prepared to live in this world. Parents nowadays overprotect kids to much and as young adults they get depressed when they discover you cant always get what you want. You are not going to be whatever you want to be if you just believe in it. And all that crap.

I work with kids at a camp and I'm pretty brutally honest. Like if a kid loses at a game and they're crying, I say a lot of other kids lost and they're not crying. It's just a game. And if they push I tell them to keep playing until they get better. And then if they complain that another kid keeps winning so they must be cheating, I tell them that being better than you isn't cheating... surprisingly a lot of campers really liked me, including those I've said that to.

I was in a similar situation, but I got the good ending to the scenario. Near the end of my senior year of high school I was getting portraits done. My aunt lives in the countryside, and has a lot of beautiful land, so I decided to do it on her property. My aunt's daughter was about 4 at the time, and like most little girls, she loved princesses. I was in a fancy royal blue and gold dress, and my mom had convinced me to get hair extensions, even though I hate having long hair. I also had on a ton of makeup, even though I normally don't wear any. When I got there I saw my little cousin through a window and waved. Her face lit up for a second, before she immediately ran to her mom. Not long after that she and my aunt came outside to greet me, but she was kind of hiding behind her mom. Her mom kept telling her "Go on sweety, just ask her. She'll say yes." But my cousin wouldn't do it, so her mom turned to me and whispered "She doesn't recognize you. She wants to know if she can take a picture with the "pretty princess in the blue dress", but she's too shy to ask." My heart totally melted. Of course I immediately agreed. She got so excited when I greeted her in a princess voice and asked her to take a picture with me. Made my day. :)

I once did a overwatch cosplay and genderbended roudhog and stayed as true to the original design with full mask and al the only difference was that i wore a sports bra. And we had to get to the convention with public transport. And my other 2 friend went as adventure time characters (one of them was fully gray for being Marcelline) and we got on we were a bit later than most cosplayers so we stuck out quite a lot. And we stand all it le appart since we al had props and there was a kid sitting with his dad like a meter away from me and o boy o_o. At first I didn't notice til my friend said like the kid is scared of you in the most subtle way possible. I try to take the mask of as casually as I can so I the kid could see I was just a normal human. (And belief me I'm a short one at that ironically to my cosplay) and I did have some black face faint for effect around the eyes under the mask :/ not really scary ... I think. And wel the got of like 2 stops before us and the kid started crying wen they got out :(. Ha was trying so hard not to the whole time. My friends laughed thier faces of at me because I was like 0_0 I'm not scary... AG wel good times :) felt bad for the kid tho hope I didn't scare him for the rest of the day :/

Kids hate or get sad /dissapointed when things don't turn out the way they expected, so you shouldn't feel so bad. But, she was probably okay soon after with so many other fun characters around! What I think about is how the mom kinda lead her daughter on to believing that you were cosplaying sadness in the beginning, which to me is weird because that's a pretty sexy version of sadness if you were, plus the glasses are a pretty big part of her character design, which you didn't have, though I could see how the mistake could be made.

For me I would have stayed in character and then asked "My name is Lapis dearie. Who is Sadness? Is she nice?" Which is both being truthful and distracting a child. But I am used to doing that because I helped out a lot at the martial arts studio I go to during a time where I cosplayed as one of Santa's helpers. (for that situation, I considered it as roleplaying and for kids that believe in Santa and wanted to keep in character for the 3 hours I was there.). I would say don't lie to the kid, but better to sway around them and distract. That's what I go with. And it makes them happy to strike up a conversation that they get to explain someone that they like/admire to you (who is not dressed as them) but not as crestfallen as they would otherwise be for saying "no. I'm not them." or breaking your own moral "yes, I am. (now)". But that's just me. And what I'm used too.
