G’day everyone. I’ve been hard at work on the game these past few months and here are some of the things ive been working on.
World Improvements:
I have overhauled a majority of the points of interest in the game. They are now more detailed, have a much higher quality level and some have been completely redesigned.
I have also added cliff generation so now steep terrain looks much more natural and presents obstacles to the player.
Roads and Camps:
I have added roads to the game. Roads link up major points of interest and have their own points of interest generate along them. They will also bridge over rivers.
You can now also find enemy camps/outposts along roads.
Unreal Engine 5:
I have moved the game from Unreal Engine 4 to Unreal Engine 5. The main objective for this move was to make use of Lumen. Lumen is UE5’s realtime dynamic global illumination system. With lumen, interiors of buildings are now dark and lighting is much more natural/realistic.

Some random ideas: - Make the weapon/hand shake when the player got damage (maybe also camera shaking) - Add random small stones/rocks on grassland (to get more color variety into grasslands) - Idk how hard this would be but: Volumetric fog
@Tooley1998
@Tooley1998 10 месяцев назад
Thanks for the feedback. I am working on making damage feel more impactful. There are small rocks in the grass but I might need to make them more common. There is already volumetric fog you can see some around 1:29 🙂

@@Tooley1998 I would also like to propose, If you can, have the plants sway with the wind, by keeping all the voxels, maybe make the plants have a different type of voxel that can stretch a little depending on where the wind goes, that also means you might need to put in some wind physics but if you think about it, it would give a nice calming feel, and looks like the plants are an entity.

@@Tooley1998 Maybe you could add shatter animations for skeletons where when you kill one they break into bones and the glow fades from their eyes? Also making them stumble slightly when you hit them could be another good way to make damage feel impactful.

Agreed, flinch on incoming damage where camera looks up ever so slightly then back to position as well as weapon hand move back and then rest back into position at the same time will work good.

Having the items laying on the ground is brilliant; almost like a voxel Skyrim or BotW. Two things stood out to me that could make it feel a little more polished: - On slopes, the roads should be a bit more horizontally flat, like they've been cut/worn into the ground so they don't just look painted on. Hills make the path more interesting, but if a cart is on it, it shouldn't need to tilt side to side very much, if that makes sense. - The texture on the inventory UI is a bit noisy. It's a strain to tell what was in most slots. The background of (at least) the slots should be quite subtle so the item doesn't need outlines or such to make it stand out. I realize that's not very important, but it'd go a long way to make a demo feel more fleshed out. It looks amazing so far; looking forward to further updates!

A suggestion: You should make an automated process to incorporate player made bulidings and geography into world generation, like steam workshop but you don't need to subscribe to each one, to keep the mystery. So that as long as this game have a community, there's always something new to discover, and exploration never gets boring.

Did your performance increase with the move to unreal engine, have you thought of trying to leverage nanite instead of voxel octrees ?
@Tooley1998
@Tooley1998 10 месяцев назад
Performance did not increase because lumen is a bit heavy. I still get 60fps with a 1070 though. Nanite would not really benefit me as I use a greedy meshing algorithm for generating voxel meshes which are very optimised. Nanite also does not really support procedural geometry unfortunately.
@singularityraptor4022

To improve the feel of your game you should add explosive barrels on the watch towers like in BOTW and have the enemies break physically when they die. Also I would love to see the addition of maybe a teleport spell or even dodge roll? (not sure if thats something you have in mind), but I also think some cool physics based weapons would be nice, like a blade that you can throw and then with draw to pull enemies in a direction, like off a tower, into a trap or towards you, and even some different magic spells like freeze, acid, shield and that sort of thing, also commented this on another vid but: You should change the inside of the trees to a tougher, harder to chop and lighter coloured material for the inner wood, and then have an easily cuttable outer layer of bark. Anyway good luck, game looks great.

hey, i have had this idea for your game for a while now. so lets say you walk into a ruin, right now the enemies stay in their "idle" position, so how about instead they switch to the "suspicious" when a player enters the ruin, which makes them walk around more and if one of their allies dies, they go over to the ally's position and swich to "highly suspicious", where even if they spot a glimpse of the player, all of the enemies in the ruin will immediatly run over to the player and attack them. i think this can add a sense of stealth to the game and make it more challenging.

Looks mighty fine, maybe you can add a system where you can place stuff, an option for pixel by pixel and an option for something whole, like a fence, a block, a voxel cylinder, or something of the sort, but make it fast, so players will pull of some neat stunts with it. Working with all those voxels proves you have ambition, and ambition to succeed, I'm looking forward to see it be done, I'm interested in what your making. Also I would like to propose a suggestion: have more enemies than skeletons, it will give the world a diverse skill level, it will be repetitive (an not the good one) to only slay skeletons all the time, and/or how about more skeleton types, like a big Dreadnought skeleton, or a Dynamite skeleton, if you get creative with that, your world will sing, but not overcrowd it at the same time to give the Barron world of the past feel, maybe night creatures, or creatures that were the reason why the world was abandoned, could lead to some interesting story telling. I'm also surprised on the water physics, how does your water work in your game? Proposal also, how about making the plants sway with the wind, having a different type of voxel that stretches with the wind, and can be walked through and the plants sway wherever the player is not, along with the tree's leaves if you could, much need a wind mechanism but it will give life to it.

I think an important thing to focus on, and you've got beautiful structures, is keeping a sense of unity to ruins and structures, on top of realism. Monasteries could be on their own, they probably would be self-sufficient but not other structures. BOTW seems pretty cohesive but it could be procedural, because the variety of structures work together, like smaller, or more broken down ones. And could you have a big civilization in a forest, or would the larger ones make more sense in a plains? Ruined villages and towns would be cool too.
