modern classic: the house of the spirits by isabel allende older classic: an enchanted april by elizabeth von arnim thriller/mystery: I don't read many but my favourite book of all time, the shadow of the wind by carlos ruiz zafon, contains those elements horror: our wives under the sea by julia armfield romance: haven't liked any enough to comment yet 😂 contemporary: a man called ove by fredrik backman historical fiction: since you already repped my brilliant friend, I'll pick homegoing by yaa gyasi fantasy: a song of ice and fire by grrm science fiction: murderbot!! speculative fiction: too broad of a genre to say for me magical realism: also house of the spirits by isabel allende nonficton: osebol by marit kapla

@amyschmelzer6445
@amyschmelzer6445 8 дней назад
@@cecilie... I saw the phrase elsewhere so feel free to use it. “To be read” makes it sound like reading is a job with must-do tasks. “Pile of possibilities” narrows down my focus each time I grab a book to read, but it’s much more freeing. Unless it’s a library book with a set due date, I can read the books in any order that sounds good. I usually re-evaluate the PoP monthly and if something no longer sounds interesting then I put it back into my general library.

I actually taught Flowers for Algernon to my adult advanced ESL class, and they loved it. It initially started out as a short story which you can find for free online in pdf form. That is usually the one taught in schools because it still hits the more moving topics but leaves out the more adult scenes they added in the novel. Regardless, it is fantastic, and I am glad you liked it too!

I feel like there needs to be a good balance with open endings. I'm the odd one out with loving them, but that doesn't mean that I love all of them. I think my favourite thing about I Who Have Never Known Men is that how you interpret it could radically change depending on how your life and such is going when you read it, making it infinitely rereadable. When I first read it I had such great, complicated feelings about it: a sense of freedom, acceptance, positivity, and definitely a bleak beauty when you find yourself in a strange and unsettling situation. Perhaps the next time I read it, I will find it dark, harshly emotional, filled with loss. I have no idea, and that's absolutely amazing to me. Also, Piranesi has become my favourite book of all time and I'd swear it changed something in my brain. I'm reading it again right now and it just inspires me; it's such an odd little book that's hard to categorise, and I adore how it slips free from many of the constraints of genre to exist on its own. 💚
