The fun thing is that fans of the book series have unanimously agreed that neither the casting of the movie or show were perfect, but that the movie had the best Jace and Clary and the show had the best supporting characters.
“You're my sister, my blood, my family. I should want to protect you. To protect you from the sort of boys who want to do with you exactly what I want to do” will forever be one of the craziest quotes from this series. i love it.
When he told her they could run away together and just never have kids I had to walk away and that he wanted her more than he cared about being her brother 😂😂 book 3 wasn’t out yet and I knew I couldn’t leave myself another cliffhanger so I waited until it came out to finish book 2
@@TheEmeraldWeirdosee yes, but “I have half a scissors” also implies the “pair” part of the phrase when talking about scissors. Granted it does sound weird and I still think it’s funny.
Is anyone else disappointed Dylan didn't learn that Simon turns into a vampire ? We were robbed of so many good jokes and i'm a 100% he would have referenced Twilight even more for it 🤣🤣😭
RIGHT?? I think it's hilarious he keeps saying Simon's not even cool enough to have a motorcycle (21:19) considering the vamps are known to drive special bikes that fly. (Tho I don't think he himself has one)
i was very confused at that because i remember very clearly that it was lowkey showed in the movie that something happened with him??? like clary sees his bite or something???? (let’s not forget that later simon gets turned back to human only to be turned a shadowhunter too, what a roller coaster ride)
@@marialuizamendonca8087If I remember correctly (and it has been some time since I've read the books), Simon is kidnapped by the vampires in book 1, but turns into a vampire in book 2 or 3. If someone is fed with vampire blood, it enchances their sences and strength. For someone to turn into a vampire they have to die with a vampire blood in their system. If they don't, the vampire blood will just leave their system and they'll be "normal" again (for a lack of better word). So in the movie they showed Simon with the effects of vampire blood, but he never transformed because he didn't die there and it would happen in future films (that they never made).
The movie had a stacked cast. Like the moms in GOT, the werewolf played Kili in the Hobbit, and then Jamie Campbell Bowers and Robert Sheehan have both been in a ton of popular stuff
Jamie Campbell Bower’s most iconic performance was in the Thomas & Friends movie Sodor’s Legend of the Lost Treasure, where he starred alongside Eddie Redmayne, Olivia Colman and Sir John Hurt as Skiff, a sailboat on rail wheels (a railboat).
When he mentioned the ... sibling love in the books i was SURE he was gonna mention Jace's ICONIC line "You're my sister," he said finally. "My sister, my blood, my family. I should want to protect you"-he laughed soundlessly without any humor-"to protect you from the sort of boys who want to do with you exactly what I want to do" At this point, THEY BOTH THINK THEY ARE BROTHER ANS SISTER. AND THEY KISSS changed my middle school brain fr
I read City of Ashes first and half-way through the book I was like "hold up, so you're telling me that the two characters with the most explicit sexual tension are, in fact, siblings?"

Shadows Hunters was yesteryear's Riverdale. It was the perfect blend of soap opera cheesiness and just coherent enough supernatural plotlines to bring it home.
@@lilith3299 lmao that was the point where the shows narrative completely went downhill imo, season 5 was where it needed to end, it felt nice until season 4 and was somewhat decent in season 5 but imo season 6 is where it started getting bad
@@lilith3299 at least Shadow Hunters had the source books to keep them semi on track. Riverdale just threw the source out the window and free-balled the plot from start to finish. 🎢💃🏼
Recently, as a 28 year old, I have been really struggling with my quarter life crisis and getting old, but knowing I am still a "becomer" according to a random tv-network has solved all of my issues
@@jjordanrenae oh boy... I am so sad that in my country stop translating the saga. I stopped at book 3 and waited for the last one to come so I can read them in English. I hate to wait for books and I can't do it for this one especially because of the ending of the second one
I think the funniest thing here is learning just how in depth the scripting Dylan does for his videos. They’re so chaotic and random I would never have thought they weren’t improvised entirely with only like some flash card level of notes at the most.
Dylan having to mention how he opened up the book to the exact chapter he wanted and going on a minute long tangent about how awesome and magical he is because of it is so relatable 😂
i know he's going up against a seasoned fighter with literal decades of experience, but knowing jace is supposed to be the best of the best while simultaniously seeing him get his asmr handed to him still makes me laugh, ngl
@@Artytanium Right?? Dom was the one who said it. Maybe he felt like he had to be there because he plays a gay character in the show and didn't want any of his fans to be upset. He looked like an irritated big brother listening to his little brother apologize 💀
@@angietoonz6605 my guess: Dom said it all the time casually and no one ever bothered to call him out in it, but Matt very much knew he shouldn't say it and, given that he was live, immediately knew it was gonna be trouble
I read these books in high school and LOVED. Saw the movie in theaters and left only vaguely disappointed, I’ve always thought everyone was a little too harsh, glad you agree!! And you did a great job Dylan!! Gold star for the 10th grade book report, had to pause the vid to laugh so I wouldn’t miss the next joke like four times
as someone who had tmi and other cassie clare books (basically the infernal devices) take over her entire teenage, I LOVED THIS SM. i hope dylan reads the rest of the books and makes it past the "you're my sister, i should want to protect you from the sort of boys who want to do with you exactly what i want to do" debacle 💀💀 bc all in all, having read the books almost a decade ago now, i still think they were very well written and world building was great. not to mention jace in the books is someone NO ACTOR has ever come close to emulating, book jace was just on another level.
Same. I loved the magnus bane chronicles as well because he's my favourite character. I got Cassandra Clare's newest book, sword catcher (not in the shadowhunter world), but saw the beautiful hardback in a book shop and had to buy it. Haven't read it yet because it's a chunky book and currently reading the hobbit but excited to.
Literally! The world building is easily the best thing in the books. The Last Hours, The Infernal Devices and The Dark Artifices are all even better than The Mortal Instruments and somehow Will is just as amazing of a character as Jace. I never understood the hype of ACTOR, I couldn’t even finish it. Cassandra Clare at least writes good female mcs.
I feel like he could genuinely like The Infernal Devices, I always thought they were solid books and the best series set in this universe. Plus they are relatively easier to read as it's only a trilogy and not 6 books, and they are not that big either
What part of Jace's character do you think no actor has ever come close to emulating? I don't have a strong opinion on this, so I'm really curious to know other people's reasons.
I think one of the reasons simon's kidnapping and the werewolves feel so "out of place" in the Movie is because they are isolated events that are meant to set up plots that happen book 2-onwards. And since they never got a sequel, it does feel like something is missing.
@pottop880 For Simon, it's setting up him turning into a vampire. On book 2 he starts to feel side effects of him being kidnapped by the vampires. In searching for a cure for this side effects, he's attacked and turned. For the werewolves: it sets up the downworlders which become more prominent in the second book. Valentine is doing a ritual that involves him killing one of each downworlder so the werewolves are involved in investigating when one of their own is nearly killed.
The cast for this movie was literally STACKED, I feel robbed we never got more movies. Robbie Sheehan as Simon will always be my favorite, oh and Aidan Turner as Luke.
literally!!!! The amount of hate that that movie got was WAY beyond what it deserved. It was for the most part a really well done adaptation! I think the issue was probably just that people were over book to movie adaptations at that time, since we had so many. Sooooo disappointing
I (re)watched this video a few nights ago because I think it is one of your best and just now, as I was doing some homework, I opened my Greek-English lexicon (which is over 800 pgs long) to the exact page I needed without even knowing how far into the book I needed to go for the letter I was looking for. I immediately thought of you and your magical experience with Chapter 17. This feels like such a significant event that I want to inform all of my family and friends, but you're probably the only person who would understand why I'm so floored by this!!
@@thesmartyartist7937she can be worth it and just not in love at first - having someone reading these books just to talk with you is worth marriage in my humble opinion
aight so short backstory we dated for like 5/6 months while we were in school then we broke up (can’t even remember why). we remained friends until graduation and then i’ve never seen her again 🫡
So true and I just recently finished reading The Last Hours I recommend this series too it takes place years later after the events of Infernal Devices
@@Grace_378couldn agree more I thought it was because, despite loving tid because of the love triangle because is insuperable, still my fav one was tda. Probably because of so many family members and rhe impossible and prohibited love story of julian and emma. Glad to see I am not the only one
that would ne horrendous because the last episode of the show is over an hour long ;-; but I would love to see him do it by season as he has been doing with other tv shows at the moment, mostly because I think he would like sebastian (since that's genuinely the best character and acting performance in the entire show).
the first three were definitely for younger readers but I love it for its universe. The last 3 books were good. The prequel " Infernal Devices" is so good. I stopped with the sequel "Dark Artifices" because life got busy but I'm planning on re-reading again.
As someone who’s never read the books or watched the show, my favorite piece of trivia about the Mortal Instruments is that it started life as Harry Potter fanfic
I devoured all of these books within the week of me graduating from high school, all I remember are vibes and that it helped my sanity after studying. I don't care if they're bad :D I'll love them forever. And I love the movie, too. Lily and Jamie will be forever my Jace and Clary.
@@marialuizamendonca8087 I like to tell myself that some people watch reality tv (which is not very high quality), so there is no problem in me reading something equal to that. We all need to turn our brains off from time to time. I read the Infernal Devices and stopped paying attention. It just felt like too much at the time. But, maybe when I re-read TMI I'll be tempted to read the rest. Are you enjoying the books? Should I give them a chance?
@@spiritmadeofstars honestly i think the best ones will be for ever TID like that was cassandra’s peak in writing. i do understand the problems with TMI, but i got too attached to the characters, like: is it bad? it is, but i love these characters too much to care. also, i think the last book from TMI it’s absolutely amazing, like book 4 and 5 sucks, i honestly don’t remember much about the first and second, but i loved 3th a LOT too. i loved TDA (the one that follows after TMI) almost as much as TID, she shows how much the government it’s broken and the main characters specifically the main family are absolutely my favorites from the whole universe. i hated the trilogy that told the story of TID characters children, i didn’t even finished the last one yet, revisiting TID it’s something that she should’ve not done. as for the other solos books, i think they all work a lot on adding to the story, and are very fun. i was very excited for the magnus and alec trilogy, but i have to be honest and say that i couldn’t even finish the first one (but i particularly think that happened because malec is my favorite ship, and she promised those books like a decade ago and i expected too much as a teenager, so maybe they don’t work for adult me). but honestly? it’s a very fun universe, and if don’t take it so seriously as writing it has a very good and creative world building. these days there much worse books out there. sometimes we just need to take a fun little dumb fantasy book and read it for fun. i was very active at the fandom when i was a teenager, i’ve even met cassandra on a event, it’s a very special series for me even tho i know it’s very bad too.
I would have defended these books with my life as a teenager and I’ve still got a massive soft spot for them now! They’re a bit of a “you had to be there” type thing and none of the adaptations did anything for them. The Infernal Devices though? That stands the test of time, I still reread them now at 25 haha
@@cncable man a first and last would be insaaane considering the imense difference in quality in all regards it would bring so much joy to the old shadowhunter fangirl hidden inside me
“Everyone that Clary should trust, she is wary of and everyone she trusts inexplicably, betrays her.” That’s it. You explained the entire series with that one. That was my main beef with her.
You know, the books, the romance, the weird character dynamics,... make a lot more sense when you know this is litteraly a Draco/Hermione/Harry fanfiction. The Draco Dormiens trilogy was a👏work👏of👏art. Unironically read them several times 😂 don't come for me 😂😂
The TV show is still my favorite show, it had such a chokehold me. Like i was OBSESSED with everything shadowhunter related a couple years ago. I was literally so excited when he mentioned he was gonna do a video on it
In the show Jace is actually adopted by Valentine and they don't have the music thing but Jace plays the piano because Valentine's forces him to and would break his fingers when he like misplayed a key or something
I can't believe Dylan didn't pick up on the biggest mistake of this film! It takes 3 books before it's revealed they are not real siblings. In the film, Hodge reveals Valentine's intent to lie and lead Jace and Clary to believe they are siblings by one specific line he says to Valentine. They ruined their chances of a sequel right there.
This! He mentions their conversation about the lie but says it was vague. No Hodge straight up said "If you lie and tell them they're both your children.." I'm literally so lucky I missed his line the first time I watched the movie (hadn't read the books yet). Otherwise the tension in the books would not have been there. Although the truth of the whole situation was still intriguing.
Why was his, “did I do a good job” so adorable. 🥰 This man genuinely brings a smile to my face every time I watch his videos. I pray God continues to bless him with joy and fulfillment in his craft. ♥️
I’ve rewatched this movie like 5 times every year since it came out - it deserved so much more hype at the time it released 😭 And the show could not hold a candle to it. I've been looking forward to this beer and a movie and it didn't disappoint 👏
I remember shadow hunters and this movie being the SOLE reason I begged my mom for Netflix back in 2017, just because my friends were into it. God what a good time it was to be 14 years old 🤦♀️
Book reader here and only started in 2020 because lockdowns and I went in with the consideration of WHEN it was made and WHO the demographic was and it's honestly not that bad and it just gets better as the author matures with her writing ( The Infernal Devices is still her best yet! ). It was difficult to read City of Glass because uh, in zest, and City of Fallen Angels is essentially a filler arc but it certainly gets better by the end. To rank the book series ( so far ): 1. The Infernal Devices 2. The Mortal Instruments ( obvious bias tho ) 3. The Dark Artifices 4. The Eldest Curses ( hehe 🤭 ) 5. The Last Hours ( the last very clear rush job put it down here 😕 ) Can't wait for The Wicked Powers and hope you do read the rest!! ( And maybe also try reading The Bane Chronicles, Magnus Bane is easily the best character to ever character-d, haha )
I think if read all book movie is HILARIOUS because they really smashed like 3 books together and blitz through so much. Its like watching loonytoon roller-coaster ride
Fun fact: back in the day when this movie came out, there was an artist on DeviantArt who claimed that the movie creators stole the rune symbol from her artwork. I can't remember the artist's name, but she did post a bunch symbol drawings that she had came up with like a year or so before the movie came out. So yeah, the main rune symbol is most likely stolen from a small artist on DeviantArt😬
The story is even more disturbing when you realise its origin. The author originally wrote a Harry Potter fanfiction with the EXACT SAME NAME: The Mortal Instruments which was about Ron and Ginny's relationship....like.....a different kind of relationship
I'm a music major in college (yes, I'm sorry dylan) so the whole Bach being a demon hunter and taking them down with specific notes is flipping hilarious to me and honestly--if any composer, it would be Bach, makes sense to me for some reason. I love you Dylan!! This video is just as amazing as they always are!!!
The fandom history of Cassandra Claire is a wild ride, I can't believe I was there for that lol 😆 Also ReadsWithRachel has a few videos on Cassandra Clare in her Authors Behaving Badly series.
God robert sheehan in this movie is in PRIME condition. I remember i had a huge crush on him from misfits, and bought the books cause he was casted in the movies, and Simon was my favorite character because I knew he was going to play him. But then the character becomes so much more interesting in the second book that it was actually nice to follow his journey. Loved those books as a teen, absolutely devoured them xD
I grew up on Genesis and Phil Collins… picture a 10 year old girl who can go on a 10 minute geek rant about Genesis’ discography and the history around when Phil Collins transitioned from drummer to frontman to solo… I appreciate you.
I think I read one more book and half of the next and was like, "I'm sorry, I can't do it. You guys thought you were siblings for far too long for this to be okay with me. Ew." And I cannot bring myself to engage in anything with the series except for this video so far lol
My best friend and I were obsessed with the movie. And when the show came out she moved onto that. She had read the whole series while I had only read the first book. We would argue over what was better and then one day once the last episode had come out she admitted the movie was better. I don't know why I'm telling this story but I'll die on the hill that the movie is better. Especially Jace.
I've loved the books since I was a teen. I'm 25 now and I'm currently rereading the whole series.i still absolutely love it. To each their own, of course;
