Sheet metal dad here. In terms of a vent for the back where the inverter is, they make copper, galvanized, and stainless steel soffit vent that’s basically a square U channel. The other space you said you were having a hard time finding a vent for, go with a cube core style as it allows more free air. Shoemaker can make any size custom. The van looks awesome! Can’t wait for the tree falling video!

You can fix your tank level window by just making the window a little bigger. If you create a template with a wider opening you can then use that template clamped to the face and use a flush trim bit to copy the pattern. It'll support the finished edge so there won't be any chip out and from there you can ease the edge with a little sanding or roundover bit. Great job on the van and thank you for sharing.

A suggestion for the trim around the tank level indicator to cover the gouge, why not get a stainless oval cut slightly larger than the hole, with gradients etched into it that indicate how many gallons of water you have in the tank, similar to a ruler? That way you can cover the gouge, and also serve a purpose for level indication.

it is amazing when you get into a large project, like that, how many "small" problems present themselves. Just hang in there and as they creep to the surface, you get to fix and dream up how to them. Half of the completed assembly will probably be "fixes". Now, the secret to that is to make it look like that was the way it was designed from the beginning. Good luck, and God bless.

Cody, I would suggest you open up a path across the back of your kitchen cabinet for your heater's cold air return. Since the heat is being dispensed at the rear of the vehicle, this will help in drawing the heated air forward. ADDED BONUS: Fresh cool air will be drawn over the coils for the fridge, and drawn over the inverter when ever the heater is running. Make your cold air return vent at least the same size or larger than the outlet.

Hi Cody, don't worry about putting trim on the gap on the end of the box just run a bead of silicone, you could also put a small fan blowing into the box when the heater is on to keep everything from getting too hot.

I like how you are building your own camping van instead of buying one already made. By building it you know exactly what materials are used, how everything is connected, and if something breaks/malfunctions you will know exactly how to fix it since you built it yourself. DIY is the way to go.

That's coming together nicely! Got a few kinks, but they're not all that big. One tiny suggestion: I'd put a filter up on that vent tube just to keep dirt, lint, bugs, etc. from getting into the tank or plugging up the vent. I might have something floating around here for that. If I can come up with something, I'll send it your way.

When you take care of the deck, what about adding a “small porch”? Just a little room in front of the front door that helps keeping the house warm in winter and the dirt out all year. I think that would be a nice and practical addition to your home.

To deaden sound in your box, try Dynamat. It's used to deaden noise from body panels in vehicles with high end sound systems, it also helps cut down on road noise. This may help with your sloshing noise from the tank. You might consider putting some Dynamat on the large sides of your water tank as well as lining the wood with it.

Try Mcmaster or Grainger for a grille to cover the heater opening. I think they are called registers, some have have adjustable and directional airflow. Maybe even a fan grille could work.

I have never understood why people pointlessly add self explanatory infomation, for example in this video you said "a high pressure air compressor" because if you are inflating your tyres why would you want a low pressure air compressor. Or "nice hot tea" no I want a bitterly cold disgusting tea. Here's another example I was talking to an engineer of the world landspeed record car and she said "we want to make it as Aero dynamic and fast as possible" no you want it to be shaped like a Volvo c1303 and go as slow as possible. Vent over, great video Cody, love what your doing with the transit

Cool van, nice job. There is a product used in the laminate industry to hide blemishes in laminate and fill the seams when a countertop is mitered. It’s called seamfil and the color can be pretty closely matched. It’s easier if you know the laminate color name or number. Sf903 is a pretty dark gray and 902 is a lighter shade. It’s sold in small tubes. I’m not sure what state you’re in but a Lowe’s kitchen specialist should be able to help you out.

Yeah, you won't have a problem with the water tank moving around despite the sloshing but remember that when the water is flowing from fore to aft it generates a momentary hydraulic pressure that just might be enough to dislodge a hose that is connected to the tank. Making sure that the hoses are tightened more than just hand tight will solve that possibility. Nice work!

I'd hunt around for a more ridged and heavy duty water storage tank - if the one you have is bulging out now, just imagine how it will be after a few years! Until you replace it, you MIGHT want to leave the tank empty while not actually in use. It only takes a few minutes to fill and without water in it, you won't be stressing it while not in use.

Easy unobtrusive "vent"/intake for that rear cabinet top could be done by Raising the level of the benchtop by an inch and use the gap under it for venting/ intake to the compartment.. Some Thin foam screening backed by a strip of perforated stainless steel/aluminium, will make it invisible and eliminate vermin.. A screen in the top of a horizontal surface will introduce dust/dirt into the cabinet.

I really respect your honesty about making some design flaws and pointing out your oopsies that is a refreshing chance from most how to RU-vidrs. I have to admit the van project isn't my cup mainly because I have no interest in off road vans, but I watch them and thumb up them just the same in support of the channel because I enjoy the overall content and watching you and your lovely family creating your idea of utopia. I hope and pray that this fire season is a mild one for everyone, members of my family have over the years experienced the devastation of homes burning and 2 members of my family have lost everything. I myself have lost everything not do to a fire but in the floods of September 12th, 1986 I had 5 foot of water in my living room I remember the exact date because during the flood my son was born 3 weeks early, doctors said it was the change in atmospheric pressure that most likely trigger the labor...haha when it rained it poured that day...lol

for the water fill and air vent issue, a friend of mine in high school raced baja, and to keep fuel from leaking out when the cars flip they wrap the vent lines around the tank in a full 360 degrees or more and that way the fuel can never leak out, this could also work for the vent lines for going up and down hills.

Put your air intake vent in the right hand side of the galley. Then cut an opening between the galley and the water tank box. This will pull air across the back of the refrigerator to cool it and add it's heat to the living space.
@rickmaudlin2160
@rickmaudlin2160 6 лет назад
Maybe... leave a two inch gap between your upholstered bench pad and the van wall. Put your piano hinge at that seem and use the gap space to cut ventilation holes in the top plywood along the entire back of the bench seat. Cover the holes with narrow louvers or mesh to stop anything from falling into the box. (It looks like the gap will also allow the lid/cushions to then hinge open completely without hitting the van wall) ??
@joelground7557

You could put a small fan in the lower corner of you cabinet that will force cool air past the inverter and keep all the hot air venting from the back. That could help keeping the heat contained to one area instead of heat soaking the whole cabinet. Liking the build, I bet that things going to be a blast when it’s all said and done!

Good work. You built all very well with the knowledge, tools and equipment you had. My solution to the slush in the water tank is simple. Do it like a firefighter water tank but you might not find a small 21 gallons tank with that solution. Basically inside of the bif water tanks you have section by built inside wall that don't separate completely the tanks and allow water to flow in all extension of the tank but by installing this vertical bump, the water once you are moving just move in tiny areas so the slush is very small. I can send you a design for that but has i said you might have to built it in steel or find someone you can. Basically it involves a lot welding work and sheets of aluminum or stainless steel and of very thin thickness in order to maintain the storage capacity.

See if any of your local friends has a 3D printer. The louvered vent for the heater, the trim around the oval, an adapter ring for the water fill fitting, are all easy to make with one. None of those items are complicated to design. I paid under $500 for a Creality 10S, and it’s paying for itself. Good luck with your project.
