After getting my German citizenship in 2022, I was able to participate in the German election for the first time in October 2023. I voted and helped to count the votes after the election because I wanted to learn about this unfamiliar concept. I hope that this helps to the first time voters in Germany.
Here are the things I did while voting for the first time in Germany:
- I used Wahlomat to find the party that aligns with my values.
- I took the letter they send via mail with me on the election day and went to a school nearby to vote.
- Briefwahl or in English voting per mail was also an option for me, but I didn't know how to, so I just voted on the election day.
To be able to learn more about the election, I voluntered to count the votes:
- Now I know how the Briefwahl works because I counted the Briefwahl votes (votes that came by post weeks before the election day)
- It took our group 11 hours to be able to finish counting over 2000+ votes on the election day. It involved a lot of paper and huge papers to fold / unfold and count.
- I learned the difference between types of elections from the people in my group.
- It felt nice to be able to participate in the democracy.
