I want an old Hayter 56 pro. Have I lost my mind!

Is it necessary to buy new?
Your help is required, I want to purchase a rear roller lawnmower. As we all know, stripes to look great on a lush green lawn.
Can you get away with buying a quality second hand lawn mower , such as the old Hayter 56 pro. Or is the safe option to buy new?
What do you think?

Ohhh yes! Lovely mowers. Just finished restoring one from 1998. Took it all to pieces & had the block honed, new piston rings, gaskets, auxiliary driveshaft (as it had snapped) and lots of other bits all genuine. Parts and machine shop honing came to £350. I look at it as a good investment as they seem built to last. As long as the deck is undamaged you’ll be fine. I’ve always found the older mowers with the side auxiliary drive nicer to use with a cleaner drive engagement as there’s no gearbox in between.

I’ve been buying broken large mowers and fixing during lockdown with aim of finding best one for me and my large garden. Hayter 56 is the winner, for me. The lawnflite 21 inch is more commercial and it picks up wet grass very well, but it’s noisy and heavy and parts are pricey. The 20 year Hayter cost me £140 , has lovely split roller and the best height adjuster. The Hayter also has the best folding handle and tidies away the best. It probably doesn’t pick up as well but it has a strange quality where it seems to pack the bag very well. I’ve just got another Hayter 56 but BBC. It cost me £60 and I’ve stripped it down and spent £150 on parts. Buy one in the winter and fix it up. Perfect.

@@maxwellsgrasscuttingservices Hello: Unfortunately I’m in Leicestershire so not able to help you. I am a retired engine designer and I have bought and repaired a few broken mowers during lockdown for my own entertainment while I personally find the best 21 inch mower for my own garden. I prefer the Hayter over all others because it has a ribbed roller. I have a large garden at the back and also at the front and to get up and down the gravel drive between these I need a ribbed roller and I need BBC. I am surprised you did not like the Hayter 48. I repaired one of these last year and liked it a lot. I consider them very solid and reliable. You probably didn’t maintain yours. It had variable walking speed which I find is excellent for manoeuvrability around edges. In your line of work to maximise income, I think you need to provide stripped lawns. The British like this. This will allow you to do larger lawns for people with more money. I consider BBC essential as it avoids hitting pebbles and smashing my front windows. This has twice cost me £300 in the last eight years. The Japanese 21 inch machines do not have ribbed rollers but they have more powerful vacuum and suction capability. My lawnflite 21 inch is particularly powerful and has tremendous vacuum but is heavy and does not turn corners as well as the split roller Hayter 56, neither does it have a variable walking speed. You need to consider what you need. You could buy an old Hayter and try it. You might want to then buy a new Hayter. The new models have superior durability. You should be able to buy an old 56 Hayter for £200 I would then refurbish the carburettor which is the main thing which determines start capability. A working one would not have BBC at that price. If you bought a refurbished Hayter for £700 from a reliable supplier, it should be sound for a seasons work. If after a season you do not like it you will still be able to sell it for a good price and it has not therefore cost very much. This could be the best option for someone in your line of work. Ps - I think my Hayter 56 will cost more than I said as I need to buy complete grass collector. It will cost : £60 to buy as spares repairs plus £150 parts (plastic insides) plus £120 grass collector with bag. Plus three days work. Not a profitable gig but it should see me ou

I bought the new Hayter 56 pro 5 years ago. It was OK apart from the fact that the bag didn't fill when grass was wet or long. Last season I changed the blade. It has been modified and blasts the grass into the bag even when wet. I had my previous Hayter 56 for 25 years. It was aside valve and under powered. The new engine is much better with plenty of power.

If it goes viral , can I have your 56 pro, 😂 lol.

I’ve still got my original Hayter 56” Pro, which I took out a loan to buy back in 1999 when I went self employed after 6 years working for a gardening firm. Don’t think I’ll ever sell it, and I find it much more of a delight to use than the more modern models, which feel much heavier. Having that fully open chute at the back also makes a massive difference regarding collecting grass. It seems they made the chute smaller for safety reasons.

To be honest you already have the best mower for the wet with the stihl so for striping I would get the Honda HRX 476QY like the one bren has....I've got a very old 19in poly deck Honda that I bought second hand 17 years ago both me and my son used and abused that mower for years with only one gearbox change which we did our selves and still runs well today but the roller literally wore though from going up and down paths over the years👍

I like the Hayter split rear rollers, easy for turning and I think the newer ones have a rubber outer for better grip. Stripes add a quality to a lawn IMO so long as its of decent quality grasses. There's a trend these days to let grass grow away, which is ok if you have acres of land but a small to medium lawn looks so much nicer kept reasonably manicured.

Client has one Yes a superb mower pulls like a tank and you don’t have to rev the nuts out of it.... Not the best in the wet but what hayter is ! Word of caution with second hand I just bought a 48 with two broken cables and a POSs gearbox problem, Paid £120 ( overpaid) 2 new cables cost me £56.00 , still not running in to far have to invest more So replaced variable speed pulley and both belts another £72.00 . So I now have a good mower but it’s cost me £240 ish to get to that point. If you buy a second hand Hayter be prepared to sink some money into it the drive s on them are money sucking And temperamental . In an another conversation I purchased a brand new Lawnflite with rear roller and variable speed ( £640 quid) early doors but so far very impressed as a working mower just concerned with longevity as quite a lot of plastic On the build up of it. Good luck .

Honda Isy best mower on the planet Light reliable and with the flap leaves nice marks Hayter great mowers but once you have lifted one in and out of your van you will see why most pros dont use them they weigh a ton !!!!!!!!!!!!! which equals after a few years BAD BACK !!!!!!!!!! Honda Isy of which I have 3 have now served me for over 5 years with not a single issue sorry not true number 2 JOHN They all have names broke a drive cable other than that with 2 oil changes per season and blades removed and sharpened after every 7 cuts not a problem and these mowers work hard very very hard So if you are new to this get a Honda Isy will not be cheap but a good second hand will set you back about £200 and if the deck rotts wich they do a new deck will set you back about £150 and off you go again as the engines are un breakable unles you dont service them then thats your fault not the mower !!! Trust me take my advice you will not regret it you really will not anyway Happy cutting and yet another good vid keep them comming !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you don't want to spend ££££ on the big brands Personally I'd look at a cheap new roller mower such as mountfield rather then buy an old hayter for the same price.

Not sure on that specific mower. But I've been trading 6 years now. The start of this season seen me buy my first brand new mower. So no. You don't NEED to buy new. Just smart. Instead of trying to buy a mower for every occasion. I'd try and buy one or two good all rounders. After all stripes are just flattened grass and roller mowers can be quite heavy. Plus you already own two great mowers as is.
