Use what works for you👍 battery gear has increased my turnover because it enables me to do more...the amount of times I looked at a petrol hedge trimmer and thought, I just can swing that around for another hr. I've done the money in the bank thing...it doesn't always help when you're shagged in work and work has caused it. Take care

Absolutely Lewis garden services, years of swinging heavy petrol hedge trimmers around takes its toll on you physically. I'm actually off work today because of injury aches and pains. When you are knackered you can't work. So using a light weight battery hedge trimmer makes sense. And there is the noise and fuel pollution and cost of fuel.
@LewisgardenservicesLtd

@@mycolliesandme268 I've done my time of being stuck between a hedge and shed with a smokey heavy hedge trimmer. I cover a variety of work...the good, the bad and the ugly, battery won't do it all but it's my first choice if possible. Rest up and get back on it mate👍

I've been a gardener for over 16 years. Going to cordless equipment when I went self employed last year was the best move I made. I know a number of people that have physical injuries from long term use of petrol machines. So there's the health benefits (lighter machines, no fumes and less vibration). A lot less noise, which benefits you and your customer. I mainly charge from solar power. Some kind customers have said I can plug into their outside socket if I need to charge batteries. I have Ego equipment (lawnmower, hedge trimmers, strimmer, blower and chainsaw). I also have a petrol mower with a roller and a petrol blower. Personally, I think it's also about the type of customers you have or aspire to have. Most of my jobs are large gardens, so in the case of a roller mower, for me, stripes in the lawn are a must. Some customers have said that they like the fact that my equipment is a lot quieter than petrol & gained customers from this. Having said all that, I agree with a lot of what you have said as far as keeping your expenditure low when you first start out. I just knew, cordless was where I wanted to be from the offset. Have I had any issues this year with cordless, no, petrol machines, yes. But cordless tech is still relatively new, so time will tell. If I have my way, I'll never go back to petrol hedge trimmers or strimmers. I hope to be fully cordless before the end of the year. ⚡

@@zoba4645 This depends on what you consider to be an equivalent in a petrol machine versus a cordless. When I looked at what I had been using at the time, stihl hedge trimmer and strimmer and picked out what I considered equivalent in cordless, they were lighter. Admittingly, looking on the market now, Ego hedge trimmer with 2.5ah battery 5kg, stihl hedge trimmer also 5kg plus fuel and plus oil, so not much difference, this will also depend on manufacturer. A key factor and in my view, an important factor, is the vibration (noise is the other). Ego 5.3/3.1 m/s2 , stihl 5.6/9.7 m/s2. I have definitely noted less vibration from the cordless equipment which in turn, for me, equals less fatigue. This may account to why they feel lighter while I'm using them. The same is said for the strimmer. The backpack blower is definitely lighter than a petrol, however, it lacks power and drains the batteries too fast. But, I'll happily stand corrected on the 'lighter' statement. At best, they weigh about the same depending on size of battery placed on the cordless machine. 👍
@dicantria
@dicantria 2 года назад
@Lee Matthews I'll be honest, I couldn't comment on the backpack battery packs, I've never considered them. Ego do one which weights 8.9kg. The idea of having the equivalent of more the 7 of the 2.5ah batteries strapped to my back while hedge trimming, no thanks. However, Ego do a backpack that will take all of their different battery packs (2.5, 5.0, 7.5, 10.0). So, with a 2.5ah, would probably only weigh about 2 to 3kg. On the environmental issues, I could be wrong but I do believe you can recycle them, however, not 100% on that. My concern is also on the manufacture of the batteries, so, I'm still cautious of over selling the environmental side but I do think that this technology will get better in this regard. Definitely prefer not breathing in the fumes or the noise or the vibration of a petrol machines though. 👍

Hello dicantria can I ask what you use to charge of solar power?
@dicantria
@dicantria 2 года назад
@@richardbaillie3671 Hi, not totally sure what you're asking but will do my best to answer. The solar panel is a 250w, 2 x trojan 6v t105 batteries and a 3000w pure sine wave inverter. I tend to use the standard Ego charger, I use the fast charger if I'm at a customer's and are desperate for power (which is rare). I have a number of 2.5ah batteries and a 7.5ah battery. These are used on my Ego hedge trimmers, strimmer, mower, chainsaw and blower. I'll just point out that I live in the UK on a narrowboat, so, the solar set up is on the boat. I make full use of the solar energy as much as I can to charge the batteries but I also charge them when I move the boat. Being honest, if I didn't have the petrol mower and only had the ego mower I wouldn't be able to charge the batteries enough. Going forward, I'd like to have a way to charge the Ego batteries in the van. When I can do that, I think that's when I'll go fully cordless. Hope this answers your question 👍

They've cost me a fortune and are all still in good working order so why would I spend thousands again to have what I've already got. The battery lawnmowers are surprisingly noisy. That's the one machine that I will definitely be sticking with petrol as long as there making them. Hedge trimmers maybe in time, lawnmowers not in my business lifetime I think.

Majority of my equipment is secondhand older machines which I bought cheap off marketplace, with me though I have the knowledge and ability to buy "broken" machines and repair them myself to be able to use so I don't need to fork out £100's... when I get to the point where I'm ready to buy a nice brand new machine, I know I'll have enough saved up to make it worth while but at the moment, it's all about saving money to make money.

Hi Rob. I’ve only been going 3 months. The cheap strimmer and mower I picked up when I started have already packed up! I made the decision to invest in new equipment for reliability. New oleo-Mac petrol strimmer and mower cost just short of £1k. Already invested in long reach stihl hedge cutters and back pack blower £900. But for £1,900 I’ve got a good set up that I can rely on. An investment is ment to be a good thing, lecy tools are terribly built, hard to repair(if you can even find someone to repair them) expensive, heavy, and based on my hla85, 96db isnt much quieter than a petrol long reach, about 10db… I’ll give you the fact that no pull cord is nice, but you wait till water or debris get in the battery slot which it will and your pissing about taking a battery in and out only to see red battery lights… tbh, I recon the “buyer’s remorse” is more common than I know, it’s just these bosses refuse to admit it as it’s eaten a huge chunk of the years profits

Battery mowers are just not there yet. Battery strimmers are nearly there .. I brought a dewalt this year £350 haven't pulled out the petrol one this year ... the batterys are an expense.. I've got a domestic Battery mountfield long reach hedge trimmer and prunning saw .. and a mountfield Battery blower ... and they are just Hassle free.. over a years use and no problems not every thing you buy has to be 100s or 1000s ..like your Webb. I guarantee if you brought a cheap blower it would be the first thing you would reach for to blow off small gardens and paths....... keep your budget to a level your comfortable with ... my mower was £75 it cuts the grass as good as any mower out there 😄... I would say the best thing new guys can do is learn how to fix and maintain your gear whats the point in putting in all the graft to give it back to a repair shop ... year 3 and never sent anything away to be fixed... happy mowing 🍻🍻🍻🍻👏👏

Your reason for not is interesting, however I do disagree, those who haven't tried battery kit, don't realise how good it is, you can work much more efficiently, which can help improve turn over, knocking time off jobs, it's so much better for the operator's health, much less noise impact on the clients, which is a great sell point, for any business, iv been in horticultural 32 years, if I was starting out again, I would go battery and that's what I personally would suggest to anyone starting out, that's just my opinion though. 👍

The answer is I have invested heavily in petrol equipment and it wouldn’t make financial sense at this point to re invest in battery kit, whilst my petrol equipment is relatively new. good video as usual rob and nice to hear your look on battery . You are right I would not buy battery if my existing petrol is going well but and here’s the but , I would if I was in your phase 1 consider the battery . As you know my set up is mostly battery except the mowers ( battery is not there yet) so I have a bit of experience with them. When I first started buying battery I started with the hedger as my main pole petrol hedger was getting tired .So to replace my hedger was going to be $1100 and for the same price I bought a battery hedger with a rapid charger and battery. Now as time progressed I replaced things like blowers chainsaw whipper snipper on a as need basis that was when they got tired . I agree with you buying just for the hell of it is not good business sense but perhaps should be seriously considered when it comes to replacement. Whether we agree or not battery will be forced on us as the green movement gets more powerful fir example in California USA it’s illegal for contractors to run 2 stroke petrol equipment. In Australia there is a big dislike to petrol noisy equipment and some places like retirement villages etc request in your contract battery machines is required if you want the job . Battery is expensive and needs to be managed carefully by building up slowly , many new operators in our area and starting off with battery. Yes we are fortunate that we have all year round work availability so income streams are entirely different to you guys . Certainly a good topic and I guess whether it’s battery ride in mowers big trailers etc all purchases should be made carefully as you rightly pointed out .

I have a very basic and frugal setup where every tool has earned it's money many times over. However, it is a mixture of petrol AND battery. I have one honda izy petrol mower (only) and one stihl petrol blower and I use them every day. I also have a titan petrol chainsaw. I don't think the battery options are good enough to replace these yet. I will run them until they die! I also have a makita battery strimmer and makita battery hedge trimmer, used daily. The machine bodies were surprisingly cheap to buy and I already had the batteries/chargers as I own other makita power tools. This is the best compromise to me and nothing is purchased unnecessary.

Battery is nice to have and use for certain jobs but definitely not a necessity. Not worth the whole kit investment just yet though when you already have a good setup. I am probably 70% petrol 30% battery for pruning/trimming jobs etc. If i had to choose only 1 type right now, it would be petrol all day long with the type of work i do. The manufacturers of the battery gear are putting on a good show hyping up all their kit, it hasnt sucked me in yet though, not until someone makes a professional 40 inch hedge trimmer that will last half a day runtime on 1 battery anyway 😂👍

Wise words Rob, If we don't need it - don't buy it. However last year I did buy a Stihl HSA56 hedger as soon as my petrol one started playing up as I didn't want to use my combi hedger on the job in hand. I don't think I would ever buy a battery mower. As for any battery operated machinery, I don't know whether they are better for the environment in the end with all the old, tired leaking batteries that will need decommissioning properly? But at 63, I still like the sound of sharp shears on hedges and edges. But have been using petrol mowers now for 50 years since I was allowed to first use the one on the farm that we lived on at the time. More fun and easier than our 12 inch cylinder Qualcast push mower. Metal fatigue snapped the handle in 1974 and I bought our first electric mower, before finally getting our own petrol. As you say, we didn't buy it until/unless we needed it!

Hiya Rob. Completely agree with what you’ve said about battery gear. I’m too in phase one and decided to make the step to some battery gear. I went Ego and I bought the multi tool, telescopic hedge cutter / pole saw and a handheld hedge trimmer with 2 batteries. £1400 paid, got home that day with it all, one battery is faulty and the hedge cutter head blew up after first 15 secs use. Not impressed to say the least🧐 Not knocking battery gear as it clearly does people well, but as you’ve said be careful how you spend your well earned £.... Keep well matey😁

If buying a new tool enables you to be quicker or earn more then it might be a good investment. Also the noise from petrol kit makes the neighbours take notice and you may get more jobs juts by being noticed more!

Battery hedge cutters are lovely to use mate. I agree the cost of most kit is ridiculous. But I know that the weight of swinging my petrol hedge cutters around for years does physically take its toll. You can't work when you are knackered and injured and then you fail to earn. And their is cost of fuel and of course fume and noise pollution. I too won't invest in most of the battery tools. But I have been using a battery hedge trimmer belongs to a customer, they insist I use it and I quite willingly do,and they charge it up. Makes a big difference to me physically. Unfortunately they won't let me buy it off them,so I'm back to the heavier petrol for elsewhere. But I am thinking of buying one if and when I can. Fed up of the fuel costs ,got ration and work out how much I need all the time these days. What ever works for the individual, but I agree with most of what you said there. 😊👍

Rob. Your "business savy" may work for you. But that's not to say it would work for someone else. Dismissing battery over petrol is just your predujice. Unless you've owned and professional operated both how can you give an objective opinion? I'm well in to your phase 2. My business savy is not to spend my profits keeping my local equipment shop owner in foreign holidays. If I don't need it. I don't buy it. When I do buy I keep an open mind on all power sources. For me. I've found battery. Whilst being not quite there yet for a commercial mower standard. Is fantastic for being light weight . So less muscle fatigue. Quieter. No need for ear defenders. Less vibrating. No vibration white finger. Powerful. Equally so as a petrol alternative. Less poloutibg at point of use. No servicing needed. No oil, plugs etc to service and change. Given all this I think your wrong to say "blow your money" on battery equipment. My business savy also means I don't have to work for four months of the year. The open minded decisions I've made and my own business savy means I can afford not to. I'd Strongly advise anyone, even in your phase 1. To at least consider with an open mind any alternative to petrol as there first forray in to a gardening career and find there own,"business savy"

Good sound advice-get the full value out of your capital investment. Now I am not working full time as a gardener I tend to pick up my battery tools over petrol when working on my own projects. for example, my Ryobi battery trimmer and hedge trimmer are light, quiet, low vibration and the first choice over my petrol kit when I have a light use job. if I was starting out I would aim to invest in professional battery kit if and when finances allow. Enjoy your vids and appreciate that your trying to help people starting out. That being said, there's maybe a different way to think about some of the points you raise in this vid. Just sticking with the battery kit theme, it's 110% the way forward. Swapping from Stihl petrol to Stihl battery gear has been one of the best kit moves I've made. I can work faster, cleaner, quieter, cheaper (in the long run) and with less fatigue, vibration, noise and fumes. It's a selling point which gives me an advantage over competitors and is also one which customers will pay a premium for. I'm all over anything that helps me work smarter rather than harder and helps to prolong my career. Purely from that perspective I have to say that, from experience, battery kit is so much more than 'nice to have'. You literally couldn't pay me to go back to petrol!! Take it easy bud 👍

@@maxwellsgrasscuttingservices My company provides Grounds Maintenance services to appartment complexes via Managing Agents. Our portfolio consists mainly of higher end sites with expansive grounds, attendance is weekly and we're on site for most of, if not all of, the day at each site. The noise from petrol powered tools is absolutely an issue and the fact that we are battery powered, with the exception of ride on mowers and backpack blowers, is 100% a selling point which customers will and do pay for. My client portfolio may be different to yours but the principle is the same. Regarding Stihl battery powered kit allowing me to work faster, it is generally not as powerful as petrol equivalents but performance is adequate. Other than that, it is more efficient in every way. Battery kit starts and stops on a button, it takes 10 secs to change a battery and it puts much less stress on your body. I didn't want to like battery kit and I had to make some adjustments to how I work but, it is undeniably a game changer. No offence intended but you're relatively new to this game and it takes it's toll on your body, anything that helps is a must imo. My advice would be to get along to your local Stihl or Husky dealer and ask for a demo of some of their professional kit, try it for a couple of weeks and see for yourself. Stihl RMA448 battery mower, cuts and bags brilliantly and batteries last for ages. It weighs 20 kg, you don't need ramps to get it in and out of the van, it won't rut wet turf like every other petrol four wheeler and it doesn't need to be serviced. Honda HRX petrol mowers are good but they are expensive to maintain correctly, when they're worked hard, and they will rut turf even though they're relatively light weight for what they are. As much as it's human nature to resist change, you have to go with it otherwise you get left behind. Even though it might be difficult for your you to see them, I promise you there are significant benefits to good(!!!) battery kit. Take it easy bud and enjoy this weather pattern whilst it lasts lol 👍

I agree with you 100 percent. At the moment it’s not right for me as I have invested heavily in stihl petrol. The future though is definitely battery. Thanks for watching.

Honestly, don’t bother with lecy tools, (except a short reach hedge trimmer). We’ve got tonnes of the stuff now and it’s crap… (all STIHL) the long reach trimmer with telescopic pole weighs a tonne, the blowers drain a ap300 battery in 20 mins and are nowhere near as agile as the petrols, not tried the mowers, the strimmers are fu**ing dangerous as the throttle can’t really be kept low (bye bye windows), the pole saw is good and the short reach trimmer is great as long as it’s sharp. Lugging batteries which are not light, charging them constantly and are super expensive is not a convenience… and also the backpack battery is a £1600 piece of sh*t, so heavy and awkward to get on… a bit like getting a full knapsack on with no stand/table… not even my boss who REALLY wanted it uses it now which I find hilarious. Petrol have there issues too but as long as they’re serviced, which is super cheap, they run great for a long time… so I’ll leave you with this, having been a greenkeeper, grounds maintenance operative and now a gardener within the last 15 years, no petrol tools have ever left me feeling as fatigued, frustrated and injured as these electric ones do.
