In the wake of Birmingham City's relegation from the EFL Championship to EFL League One, captain Dion Sanderson has recently issued an emotional apology on Instagram which we discuss in this podcast. Dion takes responsibility for his role in the team's struggles and highlights issues both on the pitch as well as mistakes and off-field issues that may have impacted on his performance levels.
In this podcast we give our reaction to the statement as well as some wider thoughts about Dion's role in the team and his future prospects as club captain.

If he had come out on the day of relegation with that statement, then fair play, but now it seems like a bit of self-preservation which is the main reason we went down - no characters,poor individuals = no team. KRO.

Thank you for your comment David. The only player who came out with an apology after relegation was Bacuna and as you point out it would be been nice to hear this a little bit sooner. Hes got a contract & if he's apologised & he wants to stay there isn't a lot we can do if no offers come in so no point in any resentment we may as well accept apology & get behind him IMO He might be better with Chris as it wasn't only him that form dipped on Rooneys arrival they were obviously unhappy & not enjoying their football

Thank you for your comment David. You make an important point in that he may be more comfortable under the coaching of Chris Davies. I'm sure Chris will assess him and decide if Dion is the type of player he wants. Last season was not great for him but we have seen glimpses in the past of what a good player he can be. Waiting about for the players to come out is a regular for me as my boys enjoy it. I stand back and watch all the players and what I noticed most is Sanderson, Bacuna & Laird are the clowns of the bunch. Always having a laugh and larking about. Thats ok but the players I’d see as captain material were very polite and attentive to the fans but didn’t break a professional manner at any point. These little things really make a big difference for me on and off the pitch.

Thank you for your comment. Good point. You would not see the likes of Roy Keane having a laugh and larking about, he was all business. I'm not saying we will get a Roy Keane but we do need a strong and focussed leader as captain. That is definitely not Dion. KRO and kind regards (Gary)

If we can buy a good centre half, or two, then Sanderson could start on the bench and earn the right to wear the shirt with respect. We know the previous defenders we’ve had over the decades; solid. Sanderson isn’t. KRO

Thank you for your comment. I suppose it depends who we bring in and I can definitely see at least one centre half coming in. We were light in that department last season especially when we sold Kevin Long, so some competition may help Dion to get back the the player we saw when he first joined the club. I don’t mind giving Sanderson another chance as a player, but definitely not as a captain - give the captaincy to Bielik (assuming he stays). Just hope Sanderson “makes it right” and brings some passion and fight to the pitch this season. If he’s after impressing Chris Davies, then surely this is what he’ll do. KRO ~Catherine

Some say this apology is too late but I think you can look at it as being more considered and based upon some true reflection. It’s not a knee jerk generic apology because it’s the done thing. Sanderson has qualities to be able to be one of the leaders and he was always very vocal before. I think being captain for the first time in such an unstable season for the club regarding managers was too much. He’ll win back the fans who have turned away from him. Whatever players we have come the start of the season I’ll support them all. The only player I can’t see staying due to their attitude is dembele. I hope I’m wrong cos he’s an amazing threat.

Thank you for your comment Kris. Dion’s statement had come a little late in the day but fair play to him for at least making it. I hope he can now knuckle down and be the player we know he can be. Great video, chaps, I’m really enjoying watching them and look forward to seeing new ones released. On this topic, one thing I’m not convinced of is the idea that the players all ‘downed tools’, as if it was a conscious decision to give less than their all. Some of them look like they did, but I’m not so sure with Sanderson. A happy Sanderson is a solid player. Last season was difficult for everyone, and that disruption will have had all sorts of impacts on their confidence, wellbeing, and sense of direction and control. Most of us can probably relate to feeling deflated, disappointed, disillusioned or even depressed, and know that we don’t operate at our best in those circumstances. I get a strong feeling that the pressure and disruption knocked the lad, and with the right guidance he’ll come back stronger next season.

Thank you for your comment Paul and we are pleased that you enjoy our videos. Like many players including Dion it was a very tough season. In his statement he acknowledged this and at least had the guts to come out and admit it. I hope and think we will see a much more focussed Dion next season under Chris Davies. @@SmallHeathAllianceFC cheers Gary. I think you’re right about him being better off without the pressure of being captain. I’m not sure Eustace made a mistake choosing him as captain, perhaps he needed the very specific environment Eustace created to have time to grow into the role and build resilience. I’ll support him fully next season, there’s a player in there!

I agree with Gary,I think there's a player on n there and hopefully the penny has dropped with Dion. As regards being captain,I'm not sure he enjoys the responsibility and I don't think he's comfortable at all with the media side of the game. I know it's a small thing but the UB40 video for Forever True,he looked really uncomfortable, embarrassed even to be involved. Maybe that's just his character. I'd give him his chance but definitely for the coming season,give the captain role for someone else.

Thank you for your comment. Totally agree with your views on Dion regarding the captaincy and confirms what we said in the podcast. I think Chris Davies will be looking for more of a leader for that role and take the arm band off Dion. I’m not Sanderson’s biggest supporter - too many mistakes and certainly not a leader/captain. I hope he uses his error in drink-driving as a turning point - not just his attitude on the pitch, but by changing his lifestyle. Chris Davies will demand more from his team and I suspect any players who don’t suit his style of play will be out. KRO.

@@SmallHeathAllianceFC completely agree, Gary. Eustace was too nice, Rooney lost the players buy-in by publicly slating them, and the interim managers were never more than temporary - but the players are fully aware that they need to impress Chris Davies or they’re gone. All the best 👍🏻

I do think if he gets his head sorted we know there is a very good CB there, reason I feel we can get in another strong CB alongside him like we had with Trusty then perfect to move Belick back to his preferred CDM position and he is a perfect back up if any injury or suspension, hopefully we see the true form of Sanderson and nice to hear he wants to stay and help club back as feels a big part of the reason we went down. Let's just hope

Sanderson " Not for Me" Delayed reation/appology speaks Volumes ,,, IF You know You have been/Done Wrong ( On and off the Pitch ) You would hold Your hands Up Straight Away ( Not 8 weeks later ) ... You may say Needed time to Reflect BUT Off the Pitch actions ( illegal ) You would realize You were Wrong ... Get Rid ( Big time Charlie ) Not a Good Defender Sell Him NOW if anyone is interested ... Cheers mate, thanks for comment :) Yeah, I think Bacuna was the only player from memory that came out and apologised after the season ended. I think as the club captain to only come out now is a little odd and kind of speaks volumes about his season as the captain. Invisible really. Perfectly valid points. I'm all for giving him a chance as a player. He showed at times he is a player, especially dropping a division he could excel. I do however agree he doesn't deserve the captain's armband. He has had off field problems and that alone he needs to prove he has learned and matured. KRO

I think the fanbase is a bit mixed on Sanderson in regards to second chance and keeping him around but there is an overwhelming agreement that he shouldn't be captain next year. my personal opinion on Dion Sanderson is he needs a season or 2 more playing first team football and when iv seen him in interviews with team mates you can just tell he is to friendly and probably needs to take a step back because when your in a leadership position its hard to be friends and take charge at the same time (i was in the army for a little bit) i think maybe he should concentrate on his defending and football and the rest will follow maybe get a speach coach because his interviews were bland but that would be putting extra work in and do you think he would be willing to do that.

I also think that if you take that responsibility off him then he will be a much better player. We need a strong captain who players will listen to and respect and that is not Dion. If Sanderson doesn't get back into this team then it'll be the end of his career. Career suicide sitting in league 1 reserves tbf especially if he has high expectations and goals. I do think he is more than decent enough for league 1 as a defender though, but yeah agree...not captain material

I would like to see him gone personally we need a fresh start next season and put abit of distance behind last years debacle and everybody who was involved for it. I don’t think it would do him any harm either tbh. A local lad that is has struggled could do with a new challenge and a change of scene. An amicable parting of ways hopefully thanks Dion for stepping up when others were not to be found

Another deciding factor will def be that he has a contract til Jun 24 and who’s gonna come in and make a reasonable offer? Maybe a loan to Walsall or something. I think they will give him another chance for that reason although an average champ player at best will stand out in league 1 and put himself back in shop window like I say would prefer to see moved on but not that easy

Thank you for your comment Pablo. I think he had a longer contract than that so he will still have some value. No disrespect to Walsall, but he is far batter than League Two level. It would pay the club to keep him and to work with him to make him into the player he can be. That way if they do want to sell him in the future then his value will be much higher. Hi guys Much as Sanderson wound me up last seasonI’d never have him anywhere near the captaincy again, I do know he likes a drink and that’s not ideal for a professional athlete and tbh I don’t think Chris Davies will be putting up with him for long, it’s good that he’s apologised but players like him have put our club back at least a year, thought he was a disgrace I’m getting angry just typing about him 😂😂 better leave it there KRO

@@SmallHeathAllianceFC Chris Davies was an opposition analyst and on a average watched 70 hours of each opposition, that’s pretty incredible when you think about it, just to identify weaknesses. With that in mind, I wonder how many hours of last seasons games he’s watched so far? Got a feeling it might be a hell of a lot and a lot of these players will have their cards marked already imo KRO and kind regards Great pod btw 👍

I'd like to see him leave the club. The bottom line was that he wasn't good enough for us last season. From now on there can't be any room for underperforming passengers in the team. KRO

@@SmallHeathAllianceFC Hi Gary. I think he was probably at his best when he was on loan which is why we signed him. In an ideal world I won't want any of the players who underperformed last season anywhere near the team. They had plenty of opportunities to make a difference, but they didn't. KRO

Sanderson can leave for all i care. Part of the problem at blues. Poor negative attitude and no fight all season. Bad egg in the dressing room. Throwing a Z up vs west brom was embarrassing. Never a captain and dont want him in a blues shirt ever again.

Thanks for commenting mate :) Yeah, his attitude was awful last season and certainly appeared to down tools and not care very much once Eustace left. I think he carried a lot more influence behind the scenes than we might have thought and hence why heads seemed to drop and attitudes seemed to nosedive! Very best, KRO! (Matt)

So if jukey is so influential in the dressing room why wasn’t he hauled out by him etc.. think you’d act like that with a roy keane in the dressing room? 😂😂

Sanderson is finished at Blues, not because of his attitude or "off field" antics but because of CD playing style. However, Harlee Deans attitude towards Kranka was much worse when he downed tools and was welcomed back with open arms !!!

Dion had a decent loan at Blues, but his form last season was average at best. His drink driving escapades has made me not want him back at Blues though. Every one makes mistakes, but this could’ve killed someone. If I was being cynical, I’d be concerned this apology is a veiled attempt at getting his career back at Blues.

Thank you for your comment Ricky. I think his apology acknowledges that he let himself and the club down and as we said in the podcast the proof will be in the pudding. He clearly had a poor season but so did the majority of the other players but prior to last season he has been a decent player for us. He is definitely not captain material though.
