I have seen many of these shows, I've never seen a filthy house! I've seen ornately overdone homes, homes not my choice at all! I've seen homes with children including all the stuff they require, but filth? That implies garbage, dirty dishes, heaps of unwashed laundry, grimy surfaces etc. I haven't seen that in any episode. I agree with most of the comments here. The exterior is the main problem here. The color makes it invisible & unnoticeable from the street. There’s nothing they can do with that style but they should have painted all the exterior with a brighter neutral color. A beige/cream/taupe would make it shine.

The first awful impression of the house was the dark chocolate brown gloomy exterior . That was truly a turn-off . As for the inside the owner was immaculate how she kept it even if it was outdated. If she would have taken out her furniture placed it in storage , shown it bare and lowered the price it would have sold as is and not have had to spent $5000,00 on remodeling. The exterior was really the problem, not the sad interior decor. There was snow on the ground, so exterior painting was out. The only exterior update was the front door. Paint it a lighter, brighter color outdoors (Even if it was just trimmed out nicely) and perhaps plant a few eye-catching plants out there if the weather allows. If it still doesn't sell, then I would do a little painting inside. If the furniture is dated....move it out. I swear I would not totally refurbish my house, etc. in order to sell it. It's not cluttered, people can see it's "bones" which is what they need to see. My sister spent $30,000 on updating her home and sold it for $15,000 more than a previous offer. That makes no sense. Realtors love for you to spend all that money so that it sells for more, they get a bigger payday too without spending a dime. My house wasn't outdated, but I moved most of my stuff out so that there would be no problem with different "tastes".
@sheenspeaks

What year was this filmed because even their "updates" look dated. I love the way the house is shaped on the exterior. The problem is the color. The very same three things that struck me as counterproductive. That carpet would be filthy in no time, the awful brown artwork (which seems to be repeated in every makeover for some bizarre reason) is deadening and the bedding was back to dated. The wall unit and paint colors were absolutely transformative, but the stairs and railing color stood out like a sore thumb. Wonder if the house would have sold if they reduced the price $25K instead of $50K although I don't think they told us what the other houses shown sold for. I think the problem is, that the houses in the show are either *too* bright or *too* plain. The eye likes things that are easy to process, and something that is easy to picture yourself in. The colours they tend to use do just that; Easy to process, and gives decor inspiration, but in a way where you could easily swop out the furniture for your own in your mind.

I feel the majority of people are like this, unfortunately, but buying a house is the largest investment we can make. I'm guessing it's too daunting to think about fixing things on top of the amount of money one is spending to purchase a place. People just want to see something that is move-in ready, and not have to think about what needs to be done once one moves in. Have to say I'm (pleasantly) surprised they're using colour on the walls. I've always been told the only way a place will sell is if you use white or off-white on the walls (because of the lack of imagination and people's seeming absolute terror of colour on the walls). I know when I sell the place I'm in now, I will have to repaint pretty much the entire place.

Loki Cooper interesting points Loki. It did seam a departure from all previous selling advice to go neutral. The house I am in took nine months to renovate and it has been an evolving project ever since. But we bought it for a song, it had been on the market for two years. But it had great bones. It is a large mid Victorian house in its own grounds and is worth a lot of money now. But I admit it was a daunting prospect. We stopped showing it to people after a while as they just thought we were nuts. Some people truly cannot imagine beyond what is in front of them. It is lucky if you can because you can have an amazing home for a lot less than a perfect one. But it will be perfect for you when you’ve finished it!

In my opinion, selling YOUR property to marry someone is just such a bad move, and I see so many women doing this. You lose all your equity. They should have used this as a rental, and then if things didn't work out, she'd still have a place to live. I bet they used the money to pay off his house, that's what has happened with all my friends, even though their name isn't on the title. Bad move. RE the interior- a few pillows and flowers was all it needed, get rid of sad decor, but nothing else needed anything. They needed to paint the exterior to match the colors of the neighborhood (I see a lot of grey and whilte) and then add some things like a nice bench and some exterior flowers to make this less stark and more family oriented. Paint the house white and grey or some such, add shutters to the windows, and some trim to the upper edge of the house. I think that *under* this modern exterior is probably a really great brick house, just my guess, if you pulled off the siding, I bet that's what you'd find. If they pulled the property records they could have gotten a better idea.

it was the horrid exterior. i’m surprised they didn’t repaint the house but the red door made a huge difference. i feel bad coz it was her childhood home and just when she got to see it in it’s prime where she could truly appreciate the update and how enjoyable it’d be to stay there she had to leave :/

r u kidding me? ppl really r that dumb as to NOT buy a house cause of vertical blinds...and why is she saying "a bit impersonal" when it comes to bedroom...SHE always wants things to be impersonal. and the house she showed her has absolutely NO wow factor at all. and bringing the price down by 50k probably didnt need the redoing it cause its a ridiculous reduction

She has no real taste, contemporary is the only word she knows. That was a drastic unnecessary price drop. Fix the outside and show interest on the exterior. Leave the inside alone. Worse case paint.

I recently looked up the house out West that we sold nearly 30 years ago. They had kept everything, but replaced the Formica kitchen counter with more Formica! The bathrooms were the way we updated them in the 80s. The furniture was dated. It had failed to sell again for the same reasons this had. Had we stayed, the house would have been completely updated.

The misplaced exterior architectural style makes me think of a beach house - only, well, it's not! Inside, the wall feature looks smart. Wow, that's sure a bundle of money for this place. For that amount I'd have my dream home. I can't imagine THIS being anybody's dream home.

Wait!! They re carpeted over WOOD floors??!!! Who does this and why?!! I thought Sophie was all about the wood floors!!! That must be in future shows. The exterior stands out because it’s surrounded by traditional homes. Someone probably bought the old house and knocked it down to build this one. Why else would it be so different??!! These homes look about 100 years old. If it was around similar “modern” homes it wouldn’t stick out as bad, imo.

Should've lightened it up outside. French Mansard roof could've been nicer if the house was light color with window boxes... With small evergreen shrubs in them because it's winter. Red berries. With storm door on you can't see red door. Make it look more French cottage. Little imagination all around. Interior before was a real snooze.

The Updo is Awesome👏🏻🥰, but not having night tables on each side of a bed tells me the room is too small, especially in a master bedroom, it should be “staged” for being comfortably utilitarian as well. The end result was really nice, but I'd be a bit put off by built-in storages and shelves. I mean, it looks great with that fireplace, but I have my own bookshelves and such I'd want to place somewhere. Can't do that with built-in furniture! So I wouldn't want to pay extra for a newly built feature I'd have to tear down anyway. 🤔
