I didn't think many others had this problem, but it's nice to know I'm not alone. Growing up it was so hard for me to accept that I was a girl. I was a rough and tumble tomboy and I loved sports and competing and I was friends with all the boys. Hated dresses and skirts and being called cute or girly, I didn't want to become a "girly girl". But now that I've been able to just embrace femininity, I feel a lot better about myself and who I am. I can still be a tomboy and like the color pink, both can exist at the same time!
@blancaah6
@blancaah6 3 года назад
Yes, and also, being a tomboy doesn't mean that you were not a girl or that you didn't want to be a girl... The problem is the belief we've been embedded with to recognize how a girl should look or act... which is ridiculous... It's all internalized misogyny.

LMFAO when I was a kid I was friends with girls like that and I used to say that too while having a whole bedroom painted light pink with princess bedding and decorations 💀💀. All of my bedrooms still have pink motifs in them to this day.

Literally same. I don’t get Asian parents’ mindsets of raising girls to be feminine and dainty. I would be criticised for anything and everything and my mom would drown me in pink and purple. I was only allowed to wear skirts because my mom thought me wearing pants was what caused me to be so tomboyish when she was the one who gave me my brother’s hand me downs. I literally avoided skirts, dresses, anything pink and purple. I’m still trying to slowly integrate it into my wardrobe again. I’m so glad I wasn’t the only one that was somewhat “healed” by watching barbie. What actually caused me to change my mind was watching the devil wears prada hundreds of times. Love you Yodi 🥰❤️

Omg I relate so hard, from baby to age 12, I used to go telling people I'm a boy and hated wearing anything girly lol,if my mom made me wear dresses then I would cry until it was off me. Afterwards something clicked🤷 made 180 turn and once bought like 7 dresses in one go even when preparing for a wedding event😂Maybe it was a impulse pent up because of avoiding my feminine side or realizing that my body is different from boys and was only going to get more different physically. So I stopped resisting what I felt deep inside and allowed myself to feel it all. Before I didn't know many others felt similarly, so it's good to know there are others out there.

I used to be really boyish when I was younger. Even if I am really "feminine" now, my personality has changed over the years and in a sense now I correspond more to woman's stereotypes. This happened because of the pressure of society. Although you don't want to change to fit, you inconsciently do it because you don't feel right after hearing everyday that you are strange.
@dooie7116
@dooie7116 3 года назад
I think its not just one way tho, when you are little and forced to be all girly and '' controlled'' boys have so much more freedom. Being a tomboyish person also gives you the opportunity to have that freedom. While you are still not being you that is, because you dont know how to be free while being yourself so you feel like you have to pretend to be this other being to get there. Then when you realize you are getting shunned for being different and losing your freedom you dont see the point anymore. I think thats why watching barbie has influenced girls in such a positive way. It tells them they can have freedom to do whatever they like while being whoever they are.

I wanted to be a boy too when I was a kid because I saw that there were a lot of "benefits" of being one especially when you're part Chinese. Idk if everyone follows it, but for my family, the adults favor the boys while the girls are... Hmmm... They don't care about the girls. I remember there was one time when me and my family went to the mall, then my grandma decided to buy all of the kids a game boy. She bought a game boy for my brother and my cousins but she didn't get one for me cuz I was a girl :))) I also remember her telling me this, "Gameboy, not gamegirl. Nothing for you" It's just really unfair hahaha

I was like that growing up but like... the opposite lol. When I was younger, I was extremely girly! I loved ballet, makeup, dolls, anything pink, and I was super outgoing (I even had these really cute princess ariel heels lmao). However, once I hit grade 3, I realized that all of the other girls in my class were really shy, quiet, and they were tomboys. They liked bugs, nature, mud, and rolling around in the dirt. Everyone loved these girls and wanted to be their friends, so I basically changed my entire personality to be like them lol. It wasn't until 3 years ago (I'm 16 now) that I started getting back into makeup and embracing my more feminine side. I'm still a shy person, but I'm a lot more confident now than I was before, and I'm a lot happier too!

Litetally the only reason I wanted to be a boy and hated being a girl was because of periods and all the restriction my family put on me simply because I was a girl. For example, my brothers were allowed phones at age 11, while I had to wait until I was 13. I couldn't date until I was an adult meanwhile my brothers were allowed to. My brothers could drive hours away once they got their license, while I could only drive to school and back once I got my license. My brothers could go out with their friends, while I couldn't even go to a sleepover with my friends. These double standards still make me hate being a girl sometimes. I recently watched a movie called Burlesque and idk why, but that movie makes me feel so confident being a women now.

I feel so much better now. I thought I was one of the only ones who was like this. I used to be a tomboy most of my life too. I think part of the reason why I kept trying to be more guy like was because I would sometimes have guy friends and they would diss on girlie things and I wanted their approval because they were my friends heh (This is like preschool LOL). But yeah, I'm going into 10th grade and I feel so much better now. Personally, I think watching anime and having more female friends who arent afraid to dress bodly has helped me feel more comfortable being a girl. I used to only wear hoodies and leggings but now I'm pretty into lolita and kawaii fashion! I'm very thankful for my friends because I feel more like myself now heh

Ah I think it happens to every girl at some point. I would also be stuck at home w barbies when my brothers and cousins all boys when out to play by a canal wishing I could go play w them. I would be given more barbies and children make up when they got basketballs and scooters, I wanted all those fun toys. I dont have issues w colors. My mother also wasnt there when I was a child. So I feel alot has to do w that you know, the mother being absent or not influencing to be yourself, be kind and gentle. It's hard finding femininity when you are raised or upbringing to act like a boy or boys are better mindset. Maybe someday I'll find my true self

I know this isn't related to the subject of the video, but I always wanted to ask, Do you feel the same way about Korea as Japan in terms of cultural aspects? I saw your instagram story on how you don't have long term plans on staying in japan because of how they live in their own bubble, gender equality issues and etc, korea is quite similar in that way from a western viewpoint(however in a korean viewpoint, surprisingly koreans view japan in the way you described) since you are half korean I was curious. Also, your dad is korean but seeing how you grew up as a very independent, strong willed, goal oriented, speak up for yourself qualities(which are considered 'head strong' as a female in korea) and how you seem to respect him alot, It doesn't seem that you grew up in the traditional korean way. Sorry for the long question, Thanks for the video!💖

I also have 3 older brothers! I wanted to be a boy so bad I would literally dress up in their clothes and pretend to be a boy. I hated anything that had to do with femininity, the color pink, dresses, skirts, you name it and I profusely rejected it up until highschool, until I met a girl that went on to become my best friend at the time and she was the definition of femininity. She was a girls girl, she wore dresses, skirts a lot of pink, did her hair all pretty, in other words she was the complete opposite of me. Her feminine energy kind of stirred my dormant femininity and slowly but surely, I became more and more comfortable exploring my style, with the help of the internet I was able to learn that I was an unknowing victim of toxic masculinity. The majority of my life I rejected anything feminine, why? Because it was seen as weak and submissive, and I did not want be perceived that way. Now I know better and I pride myself in my ability to unapologetically be the myself whether that be in more feminine or masculine styles.

Ahhh the story reminds me of myself xD. Growing up I had a lot of guy friends that were more like brothers to me. And I played with more stuff bcs of them. We used to play PlayStation 3 all the time. And we would often fight physically. I was always treated like another dude. So I got pretty used to the character that boys like as friends I guess? I had a very easy time clicking with guys on a friendship level (actually I still have). It wasn’t that I hated everything girly, I loved playing with Barbie but it was just easier to connect with guys. But my boyish behavior changed when I met my current boyfriend. He’s such a classy bitch and I really love the way he would dress and his manners. So without really recognizing I started to change. I couldn’t be more happier about who I currently am. Nothing was forced on to me, I started to change myself and it felt natural
