I Was A 44-Year-Old Rookie Goaltender

Being a hockey goalie has been a dream of mine, ever since I was a little kid. I never played hockey as a child, and that's where I left that dream. But at 44 years old, I'm finally realizing that it's not how old you are when you start, it's just that you start. I may be too old to take a shot at the NHL, but that doesn't mean I can't strap on those pads and just go have some fun.
Big thanks to Evolution Goaltending (evolutiongoalte...) for agreeing to work with me! Evolution Goaltending has a philosophy that can be broken down into two key concepts, Effectiveness and Consistency. Effectiveness is the degree to which a goaltender is able to produce a desired outcome, and consistency is their ability to produce these desired outcomes repeatedly. Get in touch if you want to find out more about their programs and lessons. They're also on RU-vid at / @evogoalie .
While this is all in good fun, there's something I want you to keep in mind. I'm pretty lucky, in that I got to play a lot of organized sports as a child, even if I never played hockey. There are families in our cities who simply can’t afford to enroll their kids in organized sports. Whether it’s the fees or the equipment costs, it’s sometimes just out of reach. That’s why organizations like KidSport are so important. Kids who qualify for their programs can get up to five hundred dollars per year to help offset those costs - that’s up two hundred dollars from just last year, and it’s the most KidSport Calgary & Area has ever been able to offer. They also give kids access to the Calgary Flames Sports Bank, which means they can get the equipment they need at no additional cost. Between these two programs, KidSport Calgary & Area is making it so #AllKidsCanPlay. Visit them online at kidsportcanada....

As a kid who couldn't afford to play hockey #allkidscanplay is an awesome thing. I didn't start playing ice hockey until I was in college and I took my extra tuition money to buy my first full set of equipment and have been playing beer league goalie every since (42 now). I hope you stick with it because it is very rewarding (frustrating) and you are off to a great start.

Wow! I can’t explain how much I love, appreciate, and relate to this video! I was a 46 year old rookie myself. I hope, like me, you were hooked and continue to find opportunities to gear up and get on the ice. Great video.

That's amazing, I had no idea how many of us old rookies there were out there! Just found your video today on r/hockeygoalies, and love the incredible collection of vintage gear you showcase. Happy to hear you enjoyed the video, and yes, I'm now hooked and building up my first set of new-to-me gear (nothing as cool as the vintage stuff, but ya gotta start somewhere!) and looking around Calgary for opportunities to get out on the ice. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!

Waitaminute… If I would have known we were keeping stats, I would have brought my goal scoring stick! It was a blast working with you. Super happy you enjoyed your experience! Let’s do it again sometimes!

Hahah, I know full well that you were chucking pucks at me, not at the net :) It was a blast, and yes, definitely going to book another lesson with ya!

That looks like a lot of fun. I had a friend put me in his hockey goalie gear decades ago and out me on the ice. I hardly could skate and I sucked in net. However the next week I put him in a road hockey net... actually a lacrosse net and I showed him.how much he couldn't stop my shots there. (I played road hockey like a champ) it was fun Glad you got to do that. Cheers and thanks for another great video.

I am 46 and want to play hockey and be a goalie. I grew up in the Midwest and hockey wasn't very popular where I lived. Played football, soccer and baseball. Now I live in a more popular hockey city and want to play goalie once in my life.

Obviously, I'm going to tell you to go for it! Check around for a goalie school, somewhere that rents pads, or even a beer league goalie who might let you borrow their pads. Good luck!
