I was asked by GB News to come into the studio and talk about Durham’s reputation as an ‘Oxbridge reject’ university, and whether it really matters. I accepted the opportunity and used the platform to draw attention to Durham having the lowest intake of state school students in the UK, which in my opinion is much more important. I was also grilled on ‘cancel culture’ and student mental-health while on the panel. This was my first ever live TV appearance :)
Please note: I don't endorse the political leanings of GB News but instead accepted the invitation to be interviewed so that I could challenge some of their views. I was sceptical about appearing on this show but felt i could try to contribute to the discussion in a meaningful way.

Yes, thank you for that "Lucky you"-response! I struggled with depression as a student in my twenties (I'm 47 now). And I wasn't alone. Mental health issues among students is NOT a new problem. It's just (thankfully) more openly talked about these days. You really handled that and all the other questions really well in the face of a very condescending attitude from especially the female presenter. I don't think I could have stayed as respectful as you did. Bravo!👏

It was sooooooooo annoying when she said ‘but why are they (this generation) struggling? We didn’t struggle’ insinuating that people of today are whiny or snowflaky. Jacks answer of ‘if you didn’t have to deal with it, you are lucky’ was very succinct. The lady was not only oblivious but also you can tell there is a bitterness there from older generations who have a ‘i dealt with shit and just carried on’ mentality. To be honest, people who feel the need to say that often DID struggle and are just projecting because they didn’t have the language and support when they were growing up. I both feel bad for people like that and an also deeply annoyed by them.

There are studies showing the amount of pressure and expectation placed on young people in school is so much higher than it's ever been before. We're just expected to learn so much more so much faster and somehow also have enough time for socializing, recuperating, cooking, cleaning, and basic adult functioning.

hello! i'm not from the UK so am not familiar with the news networks there; just out of pure curiosity to understand the context, I was just wondering what is the view/perspective of GB news that makes you say "was surprised until I realised this was GB news!" are they construed in a certain way in your country? (i think i can kind of infer from the types of questions they were asking but i just wanted to hear your perspective!)
@samjaneparker

@@celine22712 Hi! I’m not sure where you’re from, but if you’re from the US then GB News is basically the equivalent of Fox News! They’re are a far right leaning news network and like to attack things like “wokeness” and “cancel culture”, as well as tending to be anti LGBTQIA+ (particularly transphobic), against immigration etc. They’re a relatively new news network in the UK (less than a year old) and have basically been laughed at by a large portion of the country. Basically, if you admit to watching GB News in a serious way, you’re admitting to being a bigot. I applaud Jack for going on it and voicing his concerns and opinions so eloquently! Hope this helps

“But why is this generation struggling? I didn’t” he asks, as if Jack didn’t just provide a perfectly succinct answer to the question before it has even been asked. The whole mentality of “oh well I was fine so you must also be fine” is so damaging, and it’s so frustrating to see his efforts to explain the damaging effects it can have on young people and why it’s the case, and then to have a response like that… Props to you Jack for handling it as well as you did and for not shying away from the conversation, and for being honest on the uni as a whole. It would have been so easy to only highlight the positives of your experience, so to see you be so honest and include the struggles of the student body as a whole (i.e classism, racism, mental health) is so amazing. For the struggle comment, I think they're underestimating the impact of growing up with the internet, the amount of information coming at you at all times from early childhood.

Jack the eloquence and honesty you showed in answering these questions with an air of accessibility and pointing out important issues in such a mature and direct way. I applaud you for navigating this interview by offering insightful comments and a dash of humour and personality. Bravo!

That was very good Jack. We can’t imagine how it would feel to be put so on the spot as you were and to be able to hold one’s own with some of the leading that was being done by the anchors. You held up well and thought before you spoke. Always the sign of intellect. GREAT JOB! 🌹

Wow, some of the ways they phrased things raised my hackles (regarding cancel culture and mental health), but you were so articulate and breezed through really well. Well done!

I'd get so nervous and stuttery in this kind of situation but you bossed it! also 100/10 for "freedom of speech doesn't mean freedom from accountability" 👏👏👏

Omg Jack you handled this so so so well! They tried to push you and ask difficult questions, but the way you answered really confirms that our generation isn’t just “superficial and lazy”. We do believe in what we’re fighting for and we won’t give up, not to people who cannot see anything that is far from what THEY have experienced and the privileges THEY had. Thank you for being clear and keeping it easy at the same time, with a smile on your face!!
