Honestly, I think the phase detect autofocus is good enough I have the S5IIX. The open gate feature sets it apart from the ZVE1. In my opinion, vloggers don't really need 4k 120fps, but the recording limit is frustrating, especially since we know Lumix excels in cooling and passive cooling technology so we all know it can go up a little bit higher. Lastly! They need to bring that Dark Silver color way to the US they are crazy for not dropping that here! What lol.

I was going to trade in my sigma fp until I also got the feeling that the s9 was nowhere near the the fp in terms of passive cooling. The Fp is basically like a hunky heatsink. I do more photos and static videos so ibis and af is something I don't need... and the fp has a clip on evf that the lumix just killed off. I think I'll pass.

@@18yearsoldnot I use to own the Sigma fp, but I ended up selling it. While I loved its raw capabilities, I found it wasn't ideal as a daily driver. The camera seemed more suited for a professional workflow like a crash cam and didn't offer the same flexibility and extensive feature set as my Lumix. Additionally, the flash capability wasn't optimal for professional-level shoots. At that point, I decided I would prefer the Fuji X100VI as my daily driver. I was waiting for Lumix to drop one as well. They all have a handicap in some place. I just think this Lumix fits the mold best for what it's meant to be in that camera space. Also closely reflects that audience. And they're putting recording limitations on it by choice that's for sure! I forgot which camera it was, but I've watched them eliminated or extend them before in the past.

Well done with this video, nice footage too. Kept it real for the most part - the fact that you were conflicted with the S9 came across pretty clearly, some things you really liked and were impressed with, some things you were perplexed by. The intro and outtakes were awesome!

No shutter, no evf, not remotely ergonomic for heavy FF lenses, no possible flash.... No thanks. Also coming in ridiculous colors, I assume to try and drag in the beginner crowd, and then they price it totally out of a beginner friendly budget. I mean 1500 for a stripped down camera is insane. 1-200$ more get the Fuji XT5 ffs.

One of the more balanced videos from the main RU-vid camera influencers. Really appreciate the fact that you didn't try to say that it has impressive autofocus, or that the lack of a mech shutter is great for the target audience! As it was clear from some of your shots, that even with slow pans or subjects moving not very fast, the rolling shutter was there. Other than that, nice camera, great app and idea with going all-in on LUTs, but with some photo limitations, unfortunately. Plus that cold shoe, an extension to not having a mech shutter.

It's beyond comprehension: a camera that cannot be a real camera due to lack of a mechanical shutter: Night photos with dark bars (irrecoverable) and distortions of moving subjects because the electronic shutter is mediocre! A video mode that overheats and limits sequences of max 15 minutes with unpredictable cuts! A crude copy of film simulations that has nothing to do with the Art of Fujifilm. Can we really make fun of consumers who are not experts and who will buy this Lumix S9 with their eyes closed? When will there be a version without diaphragm adjustment to align with smartphones? They should also remove the SD card connection and limit its use to the small internal memory like a ‘carbon pass’! No mic jack, obviously. We have pushed the limits of ridiculousness and the worst thing is that some people will buy it because there are different colors^^

The lack of mechanical shutter kills it - users can spend slightly more and get a S5ii or S5iiX, it’s off-putting - unless they add stuff in an update such as 12bit CDNG RAW video (which could then make it better than SIGMA fp), this one will not be on my list.☀️😎📷🎥. However love your review of this, which is one of the best for a new LUMIX camera, it’s awesome that you reviewed a new PANASONIC.

You are so right about grip and it's not only ergonomics: I guess record limit also happens due to lack of a grip, Sony has a grip for a purpose, it takes battery and there is more space for heat management.

long press on Lumix camera buttons you should have a good amount of function buttons one of the best moved ever! it was a big change for me as well but once i got the maping it was better than those dedicated function buttons and you forget more usually!

The S9 is a byproduct of Japanese corporate culture and groupthink. The S9 has no singular vision, but it is the result of a series of compromises that pleases nobody. It's not a good street camera, because it has no mechanical shutter, flash or flip up screen. And it's not a good vlog camera, because it has a 15minute 4k record limit. Even my iPhone can record longer than that. Vloggers or content creators will choose the DJI OSMO Pocket over the S9. Serious video creators will choose the Sony, Nikon or Lumix S5ii or any other camera released in past 5 years over this. Street photographers will choose Fujifilm, Ricoh GR, or Nikon ZF over this. People with a tight budget will choose a second hand mirrorless camera over this.

I might not be buying this camera, but I love almost everything (except lack of EVF and MS) they are doing with it and hope it shakes up the market a bit. LUT button is ace, genuine focus on the phone transfer app is also long overdue and it looks like they actually did it properly!

You are one of the few that went to Japan and didn't just skip or gloss over all the potential downsides. If it wasn't for the missing shutter and hotshoe, it'd be a great photography travel camera to me. Bummer for the recording time if you're a vlogger or RU-vidr though. I get that there's a 'target audience' for it somewhere. Nice balanced review. 👍

Thank you Manny for your honest review. Dear Panasonic! WTF? Please take all this crap back, scrap it - take best from gx85, best from S5II and create a camera which is usable with mechanical and electronic shutter, with rangefinder style evf, with normal 4k up to 60fps video that has no record time limit or it's several hours. Put all ports on the left side of the camera. Create a light grip like gx85 or gx9 has. People are willing to have a gx85 ii okay, it can be in FF, but it must be usable! It must be a camera that is made for people - not for a trash.

The X-S20 has nearly the same specs if not more and nearly addresses all the issues you mentioned about this camera. The only difference is aps-c vs full frame. Also, the A7C will be lesser in price than this given A7CII has been released. The S9 doesn’t make sense to be bought really.

i really don't know how many people record 15+min clips all the time. i mean even if you're making a movie, each shot is hardly 5minutes long. Usually just a few seconds haha. definitely not for long talking head shots, but it's quite an acceptable compromise considering it doesn't actually overheat when doing sequential 15min clips. unlike my studio's A7IV that just goes "sorry i'm hot, but i have not record limits, but wait for me to cool down pls as i give you my unlimited recording after i cool down thanks"

I find Nikon Snapbridge to be very reliable for both my Z6 and my Z8. Fair play, it USED to be shit. But for the 1-2 years or so, reliable in my experience. Lacking in video features comparatively, but I only need photo downloads really. That being said, I can wirelessly download RAW video from the Z8. Can't play it on the phone, but it does it, lol.

One major point everyone has overlooked is that by creating this LUT ecosystem, Panasonic is banking that it'll make new adapters flip more money towards the high-end product line. If a content creator buys this to start their Social Media content, and is using the LUTs, and at some point that person wants to up their game to a better, more professional body; the S5 II is the next move. Why? It makes editing easier and consistent. Thats my take on that. Also, theyll closely watch the adaption of the LUTs snd it might trickle down the other bodies like the S1, etc.

"Its 90% a s5ii" Apart from the missing evf, and headphone port, full size hdmi, the high data rate options, the unlimited record times, the active cooling, the handgrip, the weather protection, the mechanical shutter, and the hot shoe. But other than that ..... No you see why the camera community get frustrated with reviewers. Ive been a lumix fan for 15 years now, ive owned the FZ series, GH and S series, but to be honest Lumix have made a big error going down this route, and if this is their future, it might be time to move to Sony or Canon.

would much rather get an A7C if I want a compact FF, it's virtually the same size and still provides an EVF, grip, mechanical shutter, and hot shoe at a similar price point. not to mention a way bigger lens catalog with compact lens choices. sure the LUT feature is cool but it's not worth sacrificing everything else

Not what I was hoping for, was hoping for another M4/3 camera but in a superzoom like the FZ1000 but a whole new system. Panasonic if you are watching this...... Sony, Canon, Nikon and You already have Full Frame cameras but NO ONE Has a M4/3 Superzoom Killer. i enjoyed the bad takes hahaha I think the main "feature" is that it is a camera you would not feel like a boomer or like a snob taking out in a normal daily situation to take a picture or a video. i see it paired to the sigma 35mm...
