It's and 80/20 kind of thing. The big parts of a project can go quickly, but it's the details that chew the hours. My checklists have been loaded with a series of smaller fabrication and assembly tasks. Today, we catch up on all of them.
This is the final look at the truck for 2020, because there's miles of road and dirt I plan to drive in the next year. Thank y'all for being here and for all the support during this strange year.
Let's roll.

Great video David! I can totally relate the part where you get into losing sight of the project and kind of go down a rabbit hole for supporting systems. I can honestly say I'm not as detailed oriented as you are, however I did find myself going off on tangents during the axle swap I'm doing now. I found myself overwhelmed and frustrated. I found that if I dial back and focus on one thing at a time the stress is a lot less and I can enjoy the process I'm doing at that moment. Keep up the great work the videos are getting better and better and the build looks like a monster!

You nailed it. Overwhelmed is coupled with frustration. The good thing is that we control both, and just have to plow ahead with the discipline to not sacrifice quality. That’s tough, especially when my friends are going wheeling while I’m building.

Scope creep got me good on my jeep ZJ. I was going to just strip the interior, fix a little rust, and bed liner the floors was gonna have it ready to go for winter. It is now a year later I have fixed way more rust than expected, wielded in rock sliders to fix the rotten rockers panels, just got started on frame stiffeners, and haven't even painted yet. Reason being I didn't want to do sliders and stiffeners after I painted so I didn't risk burning the bed liner. I have way too many hours into this stupid thing haha.

I really appreciate your reminder to not get caught up. To get it running and to address projects one at a time. With focus and intent. After 4 years of looking everyday, in the middle of 2020 lockdown I found my dream suburban platform to build my adventure mobile. A 1989 SQuarebody. Although mine is a 350 v8, your build attracted me since I originally saw it in a on the trail video. I was stoked to see this model doing the do. I don't have plans to make mine a rock crawler, but with a 4 inch lift and on 35s , hitting trails and being prepared is my focus. And bringing loved ones with me so I want it to strong and reliable. Currently Im putting a aux battery system and upgrading the big three/4 with an onboard full time 200psi air system and reserve tank. I have the 14 bolt with oversize drive shafts but those parts were built by last owner so I really won't know what I need until shit starts to break or I open it up and see whats what. Its a great experience and Im def out of my comfort zone. Thank you for the great documentation and insight. I'm taking notes! Can't wait t share my project and meeting people along the way!

David, the best part of this channel is who you are, not just what you do. The "life wisdom" you share in your videos goes so far beyond just fabricating. Thank you for your common sense that is no longer so common. Keep up the good work sir!

The creep is real though. I was sitting in the shop yeasterday, 14 bolt and dodge Dana 60 sitting in the corner. LS, NV4500 and NP205 in another corner, just got the whole front clip off and thinking about whether or not I need to take the body off now and get the 3"body lift out now since I'm re-doinh the suspension eventually or just say screw it get the drivetrain and diffs in and worry about the suspension later. Great video once again

What's to lift, or spring arch on those leaf springs to clear the 40's? I'm building a K5 with my daughter's to replace the Tahoe I had on 40's that burned down in the Oregon wild fires last year.
@WillometMotorFab
@WillometMotorFab 3 года назад
In total, the rear springs are set to match around a 4.5ish" lift. Be sure your sawzall blades are sharp, because that's how you actually clear 40s at full stuff.

Would you considered fabricating fuel tank supports (crossmembers) for 73-91 squarebody pickups to install Blazer/Suburban fuel tank between the frame rails? I have looked everywhere and cannot find a ready to install set of supports... It is a fairly popular notion for those with saddle tanks.

The beast is looking good! Unrelated to the details, but how is the diesel in that big of a truck? Will it spin the tires easily (mud, small hillclimbs and such)? I remember a clip from an old video where you were towing a small trailer, how much weight can that engine handle?
@headlesnorseman701
@headlesnorseman701 3 года назад
I’ve never modified one, but from my own experience with our work trucks they are slowwwwww but torquey motors that don’t mind pulling a lot of weight. I would def recommend gas power for mud anything that needs wheel speed. But again, I’ve never modified one!
@WillometMotorFab
@WillometMotorFab 3 года назад
The engine likes the turbo, and makes good torque. I’ve towed as much as 6K without quarrel. It’s more setup for trails and high altitude truck camping, but it can drag heavy junk. The big brakes should help a good bit.

I really enjoy the work that you do and you're killing it on this rebuild. Your attention to detail is amazing. I would be interested in seeing more from during the build process as opposed to the recap style videos. The build process videos would probably also produce more content so there isn't as long of a gap between videos.

Thanks Jack. It’s all a matter of available hours - shooting and editing is a time-consumptive endeavor, so I have to be selective on the stuff I got deep into, and it should be distinctive from what’s already out there. To that end, we’re making an exhaust and intake...from scratch...next. Those will be more detailed. Thanks for the feedback!

@@WillometMotorFab Awesome. I just got done with building an exhaust for my LS powered and linked Jeep CJ7. Exhaust work is very time consuming and can require some serious head scratching. That they are. We spec’d these at nearly 65”, and should get every bit of 14” from them. Cost wise, they make good sense for those of us that don’t want to punch a shock up through the floor. I’ll report.

It was more about getting the springs the right arch and length for the travel. The shackle was just along for the ride, and ended up getting a good bit more vertical with a spring adjustment
