The water wheel is particularly interesting. Ancient Chinese technology was incredibly advanced, 1000 years or more advanced from Europe. They used water wheels for power. They could mass produce as early as 250 BC - probably earlier. They had a very advanced understanding of gears & could convert the horizontal axis of rotation to a vertical axis. Thereby they could drive 8 grain grinders from 1 water wheel. At that time the Romans were still grinding corn manually. You will find that this technology was confined to the cities, & mainly used by projects initiated by the emperor. I'm always amused that the Chinese worked out that they could use straw & reed to make personal rain wear over 2,000 years ago & still used it in rural areas until recently when synthetic fabrics became available.. Europe worked out it could be used to keep houses dry (thatch) since time immemorial, but never made rain wear. So our outdoor workers just got cold & wet for thousands of years, whereas the wise Chinese stayed warm & dry.

I've never heard of Puffa Puffa Rice. Only Rice Krispies. I had a Walkman (cassette) though. Clumsy Jason. It's so important to keep the tradition of arts and craft. One of my treasured items I bought last time I went to China many many years ago was a small translucent bottle. The artist used a stick-thin brush, inserted it into the small mouth of the bottle and painted the inside, and also wrote some words. Beautiful and painstakingly done.

QUAKER PUFFED RICE (also wheat), "Shot From Guns"! I didn't think it really WAS shot from guns, but in fact it was! I didn't see a video of this until I was grown. The same principle you see here, but on a much bigger scale. I think we still have this cereal. The genius of this is that you don't need special "popcorn", and can use different grains. I like it when the guy blows a whistle. Have never seen this in person. If I somehow finally get to a Chinese street market and they DON'T have the popcorn cannon, I'm going to be disappointed!

I not only remember tape recorders but how wonderful it was to get rid of the "hiss" & needle damage from gramophones, especially before plastic records. Trouble is when the tape sticks & unravels from the spool. Still used them to record music & instruments which are only occasionally performed on radio until I got a pc about 20 years ago.
