We love a human who has no problem admitting he was wrong about something in the past. Opinion is often fluid and it's okay to change your mind. I know a lot of people start out with beardies though and I'm glad you've talked so much about the potential down side for those considering one as a first reptile.

6:22 It’s correct that mealworms won’t eat out the inside of the beardie, that’s extremely unrealistic, however mealworms have a lot of chitin in their exoskeleton, which is hard for beardies to digest. It’s not recommended to feed mealworms to young bearded dragons, and they should only be fed to adults occasionally

I just grew a patch of mustard greens. Seeds are cheap, they grow fast, and you essentially get free food. Then when they get big and go to seed, strip the pods, put them back in the bed, chop the stalks and leave them in the bed for fertilizer, and grow the next batch.

You literally are probably one of the only people that I have watched or read about etc. that actually explains the details about beardie care and it's not just simple beginner pet like the others you have mentioned but also they are a pretty easy reptile to keep as long as you are fully aware of their care that is necessary for their health it's not just extra stuff that they will be okay without. From what I’ve heard in my beardie groups, the issue with mealworms is the keratin levels are higher compared to other typical feeders and they have trouble digesting it. I just avoid them as a just in case, but that’s what I’ve been told by people that know way more than I about them

Honestly, I really appreciated your criticism of beardies. They're amazing animals and definitely worth it, but there aren't enough reptile personalities warning people about the potential drawbacks. They're worth the care if you can handle it, but there's a learning curve with these guys and for most beginner reptile keepers, there's a general consensus that its not a big commitment and so many don't bother to look into it. The result is a lot of semi-neglected dragons because a lot of people don't know any better. In addition, there are so many inbred animals that are susceptible to succumbing to Adenovirus and that can end up being a HUGE burden in vet bills and daily care. I think they're wonderful, but having dealt with several poorly bred and severely ill beardies, I'm pretty jaded over the issue and glad to be caring for my new Hognose 😊. My wonderful beardie and I are hanging in there but I spend all of my time caring for him rather than enjoying him, which is a shame.

I found a super cool trick with the Bearded Dragon food! I use the small food processor like you but I put the food into ice cube trays and freeze them! I pop one out in the morning, run lukewarm water over it at bam! Put it on top of his lettuce with his calcium and vitamin powder.... you can make bunch in advance, make separate fruit cubes, veggie cubes AND you can even freeze lettuce! I had some lettuce that was starting to wilt a little so I stuck it in the freezer and it worked like a charm! It works even better with fresh lettuce 🥬 that way you can stock up and not worry it’s going to go bad! And before any haters say anything about the freezing process, my Bearded Dragon care... I worked for Dr. Doug Mader for 15 years (any reptile person should know who he is!) And my Bearded Dragon is in perfect health. These aren’t shortcuts! But they do work!

But the care was to hard to handle since we were 11 at the time and then her parents convinced her and I that Star would be better off with someone who can give her the proper care, which she was right! Hi from the UK Great video mate may I suggest that either in the proposed beardie care guide OR a separate vid you explain the importance of the UV strength particularly with reference to Ferguson zones which I have found invaluable regarding keeping my beardie as it has proved to me that it's best to swap even the Arcadia 14% dragon lamp 6 monthly (recommended yearly) and the difference in the beardies behaviour is clear by which I mean it explains the need for the correct UV index at different heights within the vivarium keep up the great work 👍

We've had two dragons for a couple years now. Wouldn't trade them for the world. Amazing little creatures. They have completely different personalities. They are very curious and do not like being stuck in their tanks all day. They have learned their way around the house and each has their favorite napping spots and window viewing spots, which is their favorite thing to do, they like to see what's going on around them. Of course I can't keep them out nearly as much as I'd like because they really do need their light. We built them an outdoor enclosure for summer and they love it. Way more work then I ever thought but really not that bad at all. The worst thing about them is that they can not be together as they will almost instantly go into full battle mode... Both are large males. If you ever get one please do not just drop it in a tank and leave it. They need interaction and stimulation, some form of enrichment. Like we don't just give them a super worm we make them hunt down and run for their treat. They have amazing eye sight and will see a little worm 20+ feet down the hall. They rush up and they go into stalker mode like a cat and then pounce. It's so cool. Love em.

Frankly, I appreciate your level headed assessment of beardies. I just got my first one and I agree that it's not a beginner pet...but SOOOO worth it. I think I mentioned this before to you: what herp keepers consider a beginner reptile and what casual pet fans consider a beginner reptile are two, very different things.

We love our two lovely lady lizards, they’re a lot of work when it comes to feeding, but they’re two great beardies and so much fun to interact with. The next step for me is getting an ackie monitor this fall, do you think you’d ever get one?

I’m of the same opinion. They’re not beginner reptiles. But they’re worth it. My mom fell in love with mine. They’re goofs. And they can have such different personalities.

I got a beardie named Monster when I was 10 and she passed away when I was 22. She was my absolute favourite animal I've ever had. I loved her so much and will always adore beardies because of her. She would follow me around the house and always wanted to curl up and sleep in my lap. ❤️❤️

Great video, but Kale is actually a good staple green, the calcium binding thing is a myth; i wholly agree though that variety is key- but i think sometimes dragons get picky too haha it's very hard but definitely worth it

Have heard alotta cons... After watching this video I'm going to do a little more research, I'm seriously reconsidering. They aren't just cute but those lil guys are so smart!

I've started supplementing Smaug's diet with Repta-boost and he gobbles it down. I like to think it's a great way to help him pick up any missing nutrients he doesn't get from dubia's, supers, and greens. I also use it for gutloading

Currently, I buy collard greens or turnip greens, and if I need to keep them longer than they want to last in the crisper drawer of the fridge, I will cut the stems like a rose, at an angle, and put them in a glass of water on the counter. Only rarely will this not work. Celery greens, if left on the celery, will last a looong time.... and arugula comes in a little plastic box and lasts a long time in the fridge. The fun part is that dragons tend to have their favorites and not want to eat anything else for a few months. A lot of people will keep their adults in a 40 gal tank, simply because they take their dragons out a lot, so spending $400 on a larger tank might not be super necessary for them - and larger tanks can be a challenge to keep hot enough - all depends on your house temperature, your dragon, your set up, etc. I'd love a larger tank, but my dragon is very entertained watching all my chickens and dogs out the window while chilling in his hammock. I do plan to get him a larger tank someday, though, just sayin, I know some can't afford that. Just my two cents :)

I just watched an older video of yours and every time you talk about size of enclosures I think to myself: "man that is tiny." Is it just me or are terrariums in Germany generally bigger? E.g. I keep my colubrids in terrariums 1.2m x 0.6m x 0.8m that's about 150gallon. What sizes do you (community) keep your reptiles in?

Regardless of what you've said in the past, it brings me no small amount of joy to see how much joy Diamond brings you. It shows all that is right in this screwed-up world. I thought that this was an amazing video, due in no small fact to the fact that you perfect showed how to admit you're wrong (a trait we need to see more of these days *cough, cough, US Politics, cough*), without coming off the wrong way. One of your best vids to date, I shall close this comment in the words of Seth Meyers: "Now THIS is the story we need right now."

What would you think about a bearded dragon and uromastyx being housed together? I have a uromastyx now and had a Beardie before that, so I am aware they have different requirements. However, if you are able to maintain their care requirements, can this be done? thoughts? I have seen videos where people are successful.
