One of the biggest problems with watching tech RU-vidrs is they emphasize video editing over just about everything. Turns out most people probably don’t care about editing videos.

I hope to one day stumble across one that has _some_ understanding if not outright interest in music production… benchmark tests ain't cutting it. I'm happy to just 'tech watch for tech's sake' but something more applicable to my use cases would be welcomed. :)

Agreed. A lot of people also like using it as teleprompters, I've seen musicians use iPads for sheet music like in piano bars, as well as pilots that generally like to use large tablets. A lot of different use cases and things that matter more than others.

@@StaminaMCI make music on my ipad air g4 and there's a few common issues that affect both music and video production. External file management is still a mess to the point my 64gb model has become a bottleneck 🥲 sometimes audio apps just break because ios set them to sleep when they're not "active" onscreen (the same thing that means video renders can't be done minimised) And windowed app management (one reason I'd be tempted to get an m series ipad) still kinda sucks. Especially on an external display. (I honestly just want apple to copy samsung dex) I don't care for MacOS at all, so having that on ipad doesn't appeal to me 🫠

I feel like most RU-vid tech reviewers are just biased towards the video software systems they use. “This iPad Pro doesn’t do Final Cut Pro like on a Mac, who would ever buy this piece of junk?!” When in reality, most people are not making video content. Which to a RU-vid reviewer means “oh, you must be some elderly person who wants an iPad for looking up your recipes, what you want is the cheapest iPad they sell, it’s enough for you.” When in reality, people do want the nicer things, even if maybe they don’t fully utilize it. RU-vid reviewers tend to be too extreme. Either you’re a super tech person pumping out videos like them, or someone who barely understands tech and just needs the cheapest thing to be satisfied. There’s a lot of in between.

There’s a lot of “x86 supremacy” that goes on with more texh literate people, especially on RU-vid. People think that the only ‘real’ computer is the one where you get to tinker with the file system and install all those professional programs and development tools, without realising that nowadays, that’s a very niche market. Most users just want their computer to be able to run a web browser and a few apps. Even the content creators can very easily do all their work on an iPad. Only people who really need a full MacOS would be programmers. On an iPad you can make art (in some cases even more easily than on Mac), you can make music (logic pro is not like on Mac but it is still very capable), you can edit videos, you can write and read and consume all kinds of content (also more conveniently). For 90% of people this is the perfect computing machine.

It is down to developers, and that takes time. The Windows app ecosystem didn't magically appear overnight, and M-Chip iPads have only been around 3 years. As for the file system, get over it; Apple uses sandboxing, so you are never going to get a Finder alternative. You have to adapt.

@@smartphonefan5226 iOS employs sandboxing to isolate applications, limiting their access to the system and each other, which helps prevent malware from tampering with the file system; Android does not. But to kinda repeat the idea of listing my previous ‚responder‘, let‘s list: A) you still need to have the mac handy. If your really mobile, you don‘t have it. And I found it to not work at all over VPN. B) shortcuts do not work as expected. I had to adjust quite some to make it work for me and it still lacks something. C) integration on the mac, that one still has to have being active in the background on it (and the mac ideally constantly running), I am annoyed at the server app (on the mac) not being able to hide (always in the foreground when not using the Luna-app), either as a service, without foreground dominance, without appearing in the app switcher (and honestly much more, but that applies more to people like me using it professionally and with more than one mac), it is an annoying piece of SW. While you are right that it is possibly the best option to get exactly whats asked (having macOS „available“ on the iPad), it is not quite like a mac really plus it never could replace another remote control environment (I am using jump desktop), to work in all that other cases (with copy-paste, windows support, stored password support +++). Tbh, most RU-vidrs kinda go out against the iPad pros because they’re entire workflow consists mostly of professional video editing, but the work of the vast majority of people consists for the most part entirely around the office suite. From my personal experience, all the people I see with it are either corporate workers who bought it or got it from their job. Or people who are also part time artists for fun and can afford the price.

I bought the 2024 iPad pro (11”) to replace my fairly old MacBook while out in the field but I have a fallback plan of remoting (using Jump Desktop) to my Mac Studio in my office. Now that I’ve gotten used to using the iPad after several months, I do admit there are some neat things I like better on it (Face ID, the mouse gestures are far better and I swap faster between apps). What I would change on the iPad though in a heartbeat is having a real clipboard experience. I’ve gotten used to using apps like Paste but when I’m doing cutting and copying of different media types at once (images, text, formatted text) I’m forced to remote into my studio in the office to get the job done in the productive way I am used to. Such a shame.

My last iPad was a 6th gen which was so unimpressive I gave it to my wife. My new 11" iPad Pro is _amazing_ - it's got the fastest single core speed (and most consumer workloads are _not_ multithreaded) making this the snappiest device on the planet, sitting inside a pane of glass. It's fast and fluid, and mates well with the Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil (though I've really not done anything much with the pencil as I'm not an artist) - but between the iPad and Magic Keyboard it's the fastest device in my stable. I didn't cheap out this time - I got the iPad with Cellular and 512 GB and it's my fast, light, on-the-go compute platform. Pop the whole thing into a sleeve and it's ready to go anywhere - wifi or not. It makes my 16" M1 Max MacBook Pro feel like a boat anchor.

I’m one of the people who would always scream every time you complained about the iPad and I get it, you’re grew up using Desktops and eventually laptops so that form factor would always be your natural preference. I’m 27 and I got my first iPad, the iPad 2 in 2012. It was my primary device when I got into Uni at 15 and I grew up using an iPad. I had an apple pencil and took notes in class on my iPad and organized my life around reminders on iPad. I study, reviewed books and write up documents all on my iPad. Today, I’m grown, have my own business and I still run the entire company from my iPad. I mean, I have a MacBook for Mac stuff but 70% of my workflow is still designed around the iPad especially lighter work flows. I can easily go from Designing Content to managing our Back End Database to Posting on our social media platforms while monitoring ads, all of this while a movie is playing in P-in-P. For some of us, the iPad is the computer we grew up on and it serves a majority of our computing needs, the same way my girlfriend grew up doing everything on her phone and that would always be her primary computing device. It’s less about making them do the same thing and more about how to deliver the best experience for different customer expectations

I think the point here is missed. iPad's are incredibly powerful laptop equivalents. If I buy any other product in the laptop, computer, or tablet category, I can take that device, install other operating systems on it, use it as a full computer, or use it more like a tablet. However Apple has made that choice for us and has arbitrarily limited the device from doing what any computer a consumer pays for should be able to do. I love the aesthetics and art capabilities of my Ipad Air M2, it's essentially a full computer when you plug in a few peripherals, and yet my 2017 windows laptop can do infinitely more because nobody has shackled it down to avoid cutting into the macbook market, which is what Apple does to the iPads. For those of you saying "if you want to use macOS, buy a macbook", your brains are mush and you have Stockholm syndrome. It's really really simple, iOS is perfect for most people. But the "pro's" who use Pro products may have real world use cases for needing multiple operating systems or a full desktop environment. To sell those "pros" not only an incomplete product, but a product that then necessitates you dropping thousands of dollars extra for something which your first ipad purchase could theoretically achieve by itself, then I hope you can see how that feels like someone throwing a bowling ball right at your nuts.

I think people like us, tech enthusiasts, can get lost in our own perception of a “use case”. To the vast majority of people out there whose world doesn’t revolve around a computer. The iPad is undoubtedly, a very appealing choice for their own personal computer. The normal person might interact with a computer and work. in their home life they use use their iPhone for more than anything else. Their windows laptop is most likely dusty and very old. All of their memories regarding dealing with a computer are probably ones of frustration. So to this group of people, the idea of a capable and portable computing platform like an iPad is very appealing. They aren’t intimidated or frustrated by the user interface, because it’s just like their iPhone. I believe this group of people is the demographic that Apple is targeting. iPadOS offers Apple the opportunity to rethink the concepts and ideas of a personal computer. Doing so within the ease of use framework and mentality that is iOS.

I'm going to keep saying this to every "iPad needs macOS" tech enthusiast until I'm blue in the face, but no, the iPad does not need macOS and that would in fact be a disaster for most users. Your main way of interacting with an iPad is a touchscreen; not, in fact, the keyboard accessories that come with, because those accessories are _optional,_ not mandatory. Making macOS, a keyboard-and-mouse-only OS, work on iPad would require a ton of design compromises the likes of which have already been seen on Windows 8, 10, and 11. Mac users wouldn't want that. iPad users wouldn't want that, and I know neither side would want it because I'm _on_ both sides. Apple needs to fix multitasking on iPadOS and make a comprehensive multitasking system that all iPad apps support, rather than a bunch of bandaid fixes. That's what these tech enthusiasts really want, to have multitasking and file management work properly; not straight-up macOS on the iPad.

It’s pretty easy to see why Apple doesn’t just put Mac OS on the iPad. Think about it, if you had to design a whole new way of computing for touch, would it be better to simply slap on your Desktop OS from the 90s and try to make it Touch friendly like Microsoft did or would it be better to build from scratch, completely with Touch in mind and slowly develop unique solutions that would work effectively with Touch? The later is obviously the better way to go and that’s what iPad OS is about. More people are familiar with iPhones around the world than Macs, so it makes more sense to start from the iPhone, a more familiar and popular form factor and build greater computing capabilities to rival the Mac than to simply slap on Mac OS and then try to fix that. Mac OS is simply too unfamiliar to many that it makes no sense to build your future computing platform on that as opposed to the very popular iPhone platform. It follows a principle called MAYA - Most Advanced Yet Acceptable

And with only half the battery life, smaller screen, smaller trackpad, worse speakers, more difficult repairability, less capable OS, more locked down OS, fewer i/o ports, fewer chassis colors, worse balance (if you, you know- actually want to use it on your lap)... In my family I know of 6 people who have ipads, 2 mini's, 2 air and 2 pro's. The mini is pretty obvious why they went for it, size and portability above all else. Air's because they just want a mini with a bigger screen and don't need much else. As for the pro's, my cousin bought it for the simple reason that it has the lidar scanner, allowing her to scan and create 3D models of real world objects, she can scan and edit them on the go, becoming basically her main tool for work; she also uses it for reading, and note taking. She depends on the iPad even more so than her phone. As for me with the pro as well, I'm a photographer and work with GIS, when I'm on a shoot the iPad easily fits in my camera bag, so I take a big bright, dual oled screen everywhere I want without a lot of extra weight or bulk. As for the GIS side, the iPad straight up couldn't process that work load, and I don't want it to, but when I download my several hundred GB processed maps, it's super easy to show on a device I have on hand when I go to meetings, instead of showing it on a small screen, not all meetings are in ideal dim rooms with projectors or a bigger screen.

Yes, years ago, I found it amusing when random RU-vid comments and creators complained about iPads running iPadOS as if they were more knowledgeable than a trillion-dollar company. While customer feedback is valuable, and many can offer innovative solutions that Apple might overlook, Apple has learned from Microsoft that attempting to create a hybrid desktop/tablet device is a foolish and ill-advised move. Why would anyone try and follow the abject failure of W8/Windows Tablets?

Microsoft is quite touch-unfriendly, so Windows 2-in-1s "kinda flopped", but now with X Plus and X Elite (can run Android and Linux too) and increasing ARM support the Pros are coming back with vengeance. Watch Just Josh's take on this year's MS Pros. As for the cheap Android-Windows hybird tablets they disappeared because Intel Atom chips couldn't run Android well. But now the M Series chips can run both MacOS and iPadOS well, so why not give hybird tablets another try?

@@anetizen6404@anetizen6404 I agree. Things are different now, and OEMs' second chances at hybrids (Android/Windows) seem likely as they try something different. I am just quoting history, and it repeats itself-maybe it won't next time?

My iPad Air is my main computer. Most of the time i use it with the pen, but i do have a cheap magic keyboard like bluetooth keyboard. I use my ipad to take and edit notes, write emails, Messaging, Videochat, RU-vid, edit family pictures, create collages, edit home videos, check my accounts and so on.. there are a lot of uses. I still have an old MacBook Air 2013 for two tasks, that i can’t do on my ipad yet. Format my Digital camera so card, and configure my internet router. Also when i go my printer to years ago, i had use the mac, to install a firmware update, that the allowed me to set the printer up via ipad. As the mac hadn‘t gotten an updates in ages, i would not use it for important tasks, like online banking, but for the task named before, why not. I‘m definitely not buying a new mac just for the updates. I heard, that the formation issue is solved with iOS 18. We will see. Would i like to see the ipad Os a bit less restricted? Yes! Do I need macOS for this? No! Which restriction would I loosened first? The WebKit one. Let other browser user their own core, this should help with a lot of issues, because the, we could choose with browser we use to run a specific online service. Allow more than one audio input. Like a capture card and a mic. Would it nice to be able to run a few mac apps? Yes, a remember Pixelmator Pro fondly and very user friendly. Can Affinity do the same? Probably. But I‘m not there yet. I find the program confusion. But its the best onetime payment option.

I got sick of waiting for an iPad Mini Pro and decided to buy an 11 inch M4 iPad Pro as a pseudo Mini Pro. And it has successfully supplanted my Mini 6 for all functions except for carrying it with me in my hip pack/fanny pack.
