Some are worthy, some will never be. I know the difference.
This is the opening line of the latest Azula comic, and by the end I thought this line was going to get turned on its head but something even better happens.
I must admit, I was going into this thinking we were going to get a very shallow and rushed redemption arc for the character, but I was surprised to see that Azula’s journey ends up in an even more interesting place, despite the overall plot of the Airbender franchise being largely unchanged.

A key part of Azula's redemption arc has to include her confronting her father's lack of appreciation for the effort she made on his behalf and reconciliation with her brother
@julio1148
@julio1148 10 месяцев назад
those are important emotional beats but I fail to see how those are steps towards forgiving/redeeming her. For redemption you need to acknowledge your faults, ask for forgiveness, and do the right thing after. It should be a long, arduous journey for her
@ZeUS-GARCiA
@ZeUS-GARCiA 10 месяцев назад
@@julio1148i think it has to do more with how her relationship with zuko has always been one of conflict. The only time you ever see azula “get along” with zuko was when she convinced him to help fight aang and katara during the crossroads of destiny. The other time is when he came back home to the fire nation in the first half of book 3. Every other time u see her treating him the same way their father treated zuko. So her reconciliation with Zuko and acknowledging her fathers lack of appreciation plays a good part of her story.

@@ZeUS-GARCiA The comic is ridiculous. The spirit says that Azula hurt those who cared about her. Ursa who abandoned and neglected her, Iroh who favored Zuko over her, Zuko who physically abused Azula and sent her to a madhouse.

@@shivangparikh2933 Azula DID hurt those around her. Zuko has every right to not want to be close to Azula after she tried to kill him multiple times, joked about him dying at the hands of their fathers when they were kids, mocked him for not being a prodigy in bending, etc... Gurl literally smiled during the most traumatic event of his life and the one that impacted him for years after and has a daily reminder of everytime he looks at the mirror Ursa wasn't neglectful, inadequate for Azula? Yes, she was too passive, but she wasn't neglectful. Ursa and Azula weren't able to connect, the more praise Ozai gave Azula the more she learned from him about ruthlessness and the power of fear, the opposite of what Ursa teaches, so she scorned her more. You can't tell me it wasn't understandable that her mother admonished her when talking about the hypothetical death of her uncle as if it was something to be desired. And Ozai was in total control of the household, it's even implied that he physically abused Ursa, so she couldn't get too close to her or try to teach her better because she would suffer Ozai's wrath, every attempt of her to try to make Azula a kinder person was futile since both of them were fully under Ozai's thumb. About Iroh... It's implied he wasn't very present when they were children and after the siege of Ba Sing Se, Azula treated him like he was a failure and showed no empathy for the loss of his son and after that he was forced to choose between going with Zuko: recently burned in the face, forbidden to go to his home and forced to go into the unknown, sent in an impossible quest and in a mega delicate physiological state... and Azula, who, for everyone present, was safe and thriving in the palace, the picture of the perfect princess (that's the thing with her, her abuse isn't as visible as Zuko's). After that, the first thing she does when they reunite for the first time in three years, she lies to him and Zuko to get them imprisoned, tries to kill his nephew with lightning, leads a quest to capture them and bring them back to the FN and just some weeks after she shoots him in the chest as a distraction... and you wonder why Iroh didn't want to be close to her after that??
@macvadda2318
@macvadda2318 6 месяцев назад
@@mahiiragi thing is its pretty understandable, azula was showered by love from ozai, zuko wasnt, zuko went to others for affection and it allowed him to get close to iroh, zukos abuse at the hands of ozai is the reason his redemption happened, at least while ozai was alive, all azula thinks of when ozai is the topic is love and affection, so anyone who is against ozai hates the person who loves her, i think redemption is possible if she learns that he only ever loved her due to her being a prodigy and nothing else

Great video!!! Before reading the comic, I was scared that Azula would simply say she's sorry and be granted redemption for it, something that seemed so easy at first because of the things the spirit tells her (maybe there was a catch there?). But fortunately, it wasn't like that, and as you said, Azula needs much more to get there. While she didn't make a huge turnaround, she did change in some way. Her initial goal in the beginning of the comic was to cruelly avenge the Fire Nation warriors, and the spirit tells her that the final form it showed her was Azula's inner self, which was cruelty and a hunger for revenge (something that was not true because the real form of the spirit was like that). However, in the end, she decides not to be cruel and sets her vengeance aside. It was a good comic and one of my favorites so far. I think they did the right thing for future stories, and personally, I would like her to choose a gray path, where she's not the eternal enemy of her brother or the Gaang, but not their friend either.

Airspeedprime had a really good take on this; the comic does draw attention to Azula from a sympathetic POV, but it also reminds us that she has been a terrible person and that's not magically gonna change overnight. From the way it ends it's clear they EVENTUALLY want to redeem her, but she's almost certainly gonna be the bad guy at least one more time.

I would love for Azula to find redemption, I don't want her to be seen as a villain.... Her father was a monster, and controlled everyone around him. Azula has to find herself and realize that she is not supposed to be the image of her father, she's too good for that. Her mother always knew, she was scared of seeing her husband in her daughter, afraid that she failed as a mother to protect her daughter. I hope Azula will understand that one day and can't wait to see her growth.

Villains aren’t always born, but are made in my opinion. Azula followed her father’s teachings because she wanted her father’s affection and that brought about this dilemma in her character. But in my book most people can be redeemed if the they are willing to see it for themselves or the path their walking holds redemption. Azula is now walking the path towards redemption by the first spirit that she encountered and is now changing bit by bit. I hope she can redeem herself because of the biggest reason is by her father’s cruel and evil teachings. Thinking back if she could find a way to pursued and followed her mother teachings instead of Ozai things may have turned out more different. One things for sure understanding the background of a character is the first step to help them heal and find a better person in themselves and help them grow out of the dogma that they have been taught or scared with.😔😔😔

A lot of this is just down to where Avatar is across the board at the moment. The comics have had a major switch up since Avatar Studios was announced, we don't do trilogies any more, only one-shots and short stories, we don't do big major arcs in them. I can't imagine Azula appearing in a major way in another comic anytime soon, just because of what her arc needs and what the comics are capable of. So it seems clear that Azula's arc is destined for an Avatar Studios project, which we know so little about. So yes Azula's arc at the moment is very open ended, she could turn up anywhere, but at this early to mid point and where Azula is I think it makes sense to a degree. Azula herself deep down is pretty directionless she is repeating a cycle only shifting a little bit, the comic over and over highlights that she doesn't know what she truly wants and even the things she kind of wants there are hesitations and conflict.

I have always been a Marvel & DC comic book fan, and I certainly have to applaud the ATLA fandom for there patience because if this was like a Daredevil or Batman comic then I would expect the next issue in the following 2-3 weeks whereas Avatar studios has not announced an upcoming Azula project to finish. The comic book feels like a 23 minute episode which isn't bad, but doesn't seem like it gives closure on Azula's future. Hopefully more content is coming soon for Azula and Avatar as a whole.

Brilliant video! Seeing this brought my own redemption story to mind. Born in the same hospital shown on Walker Texas Ranger moved in 2003 and fought with mutual misunderstandings. Over time it got better and better and I did have helpers (both staff and fellow students) who got me through. My college senate days are the time it really turned around and I never looked back since. On the last Sunday of the 2010s I forgave all wrongs done to me and by me. Then in 2022 found out no one was ever mad at me in the first place. Only thing I don't really think is accurate is the title. I don't see it as Antonie being wrong rather I see it as him having a different perspective. I also see it as him, like he pointed out, thinking of it another way than what it ended up being. Maybe to some that could be considered being wrong, my way isn't the only way. He could have just titled it that to make it short and sweet. This is a great video! I love redemption so much and Azula indeed would make the perfect Anti-Hero!

I'm glad they dont let her off the hook in this story. She has a terrible tendency to blame everyone but herself for her actions. Until those are addressed she'll just keep making the same mistakes.

Taking accountability is great. But also her seeing what her Father did to her. How she knows that her father made her into a monster. That she hates her mother because she left her alone with him, she hates that she didnt have someone to protect her like Zuko did. She is responsible for her own actions yes, but those actions were dictated by her own abuse. She has to learn to forgive herself as well for her own past wrongs, accept that yes they where wrong, she was wrong, but accept and forgive herself for what Ozai turned her into. How long does it take a weapon to learn to not be a weapon? Azula was raised from a very young age to be her fathers weapon. Zuko had years away from their father, away from the palace, and a mentor who didnt run off the first time he had a temper tantrum. Azula is going to need that too, she is now away from her father, the palace, but she hasnt found a mentor who can teach her the way forward yet.

The difference between Azula and Zuko is that while Zuko started off as a decent person, but got twisted by his fathers cruel treatment and ideals, Azula comes off as someone who was bad from the beginning. Ozais parenting definitely made her worse, but even as a child she seemed to be cruel and mean-spirited. Thats not to say she can't change, this story clearly shows she can, but she's walking a much longer road than Zuko as she has to not only unlearn her father's upbringing, but also her own deepseated issues.

Azula ticks nearly every box for Antisocial Personality Disorder Symptoms of antisocial personality disorder include: Repeatedly Ignoring right and wrong. Telling lies to take advantage of others. Not being sensitive to or respectful of others. Using charm or wit to manipulate others for personal gain or pleasure. Having a sense of superiority and being extremely opinionated. Having problems with the law, including criminal behavior. Being hostile, aggressive, violent or threatening to others. Feeling no guilt about harming others. Doing dangerous things with no regard for the safety of self or others. Being irresponsible and failing to fulfill work or financial responsibilities. Adults with antisocial personality disorder usually show symptoms of conduct disorder before the age of 15. Symptoms of conduct disorder include serious, ongoing behavior problems, such as: Aggression toward people and animals. Destruction of property. Lying and dishonesty. Theft. Serious violation of rules. Azula is fictional, so she can be written however the creators feel, but speaking realistically, a sociopath can’t just “grow” a conscience

That is the thing. A fictional villain or even a real-life common criminal will have these traits. However if they show consciousness and introspection like Azula in this comic (and not only in this comic but in previous comics and even a little in the show) then they don't fit into the disorder like a box. In fiction, age doesn't matter for that, there are many examples. However, due to Azula's age, at most she would be labeled with conduct disorder. And yet it's not set in stone for a teenage fictional villain.

It was alright, all it did was reaffirm my beliefs that she's on the narcissistic spectrum (obviously with sociopathic tendencies but it wasn't the focus). Other than that there was no real resolution or development, just a boilerplate label of who Azula is and where she's at now. But it might be better this way since if the writers aren't equipped to deal with this topic, whether they want to redeem her or not, they shouldn't write anything IMO. It always leaves the door open for other writers in the future who may be more knowledgeable on the subject to tackle. My only worry is that Aaron Ehasz is on record saying he wanted a redemption arc for Azula and that it would be through 'Zuko's unwavering support no matter what'. I don't know how that would work, since in my experience narcissists don't give a shit about support, they suck on their support system like a leech until nothing's left; hope he isn't the one who gives Azula's story closure. Only thing I didn't like was the explanation of the spirit's form and calling Azula a monster. Saying her actions were evil and her negative social tendencies like manipulation and etc are all fine, but saying anyone is a monster is just trying to disassociate society's rejects from 'normal' people when we are all just humans. All capable of evil or good. You could argue that it's simply the spirit's opinion, but if what it really says about it's form is true, then I have to imagine there's some significance there since spiritualism seems to be a big theme in this IP. Wished there was some pushback, but I guess that's what the author thinks about narcissistic people. A common opinion.

Azula is pretty monstrous. That's definitely a valid, if not accurate, description of her.
@TheLastSane1
@TheLastSane1 6 месяцев назад
@@eradict Not really, she is no more monstrous than any other human who has power and authority and abused it. We all like to pretend that the "bad people" aren't like us but the fact is they are. If you give 100 people mass wealth and no accountability how many of them would do what you consider monstrous. Azula isn't even really Narcissistic, its just her defense mechanism. She was taught from a young age that she was better, that no matter what she did or who she hurt it was ok because she was better than them. Its why its her go to defense when she is given any push back because its an ingrained teaching. But look what also she does in this book. When she thinks its Ty Lee she beats, she doesn't try to kill her, which confuses the spirit so much that she brings it up. A Narcissist wouldn't really care especially about someone who she sees as someone who betrayed her and is out to stop her.

I am just gonna add this, Azula is one of those characters we love, and who truly loves her, doesn't want her to go through a redemption arch, not because we think she doesn't deserve it, but because Azula straight up doesn't need it, in fact must not have it. Awesome baddies does not equal to redemption arch. There are many sorts of evil and just pure antagonistic forces, and her character fits in the one that must not change. Its a fictional character after all, let her suffer throughout the end, and leave this world alone, perhaps with regrets, not that I wish it upon her, but thats the realistic outcome even real people will get most of the times. It fits her character, her status, it is her life being solo

Ngl I wanted a redemption arc of her for the simple fact I wanted to see her together with gaang and see what type of dynamics that created. But now that I'm older I realize she doesn't need one, I think a lone wolf life suits her better after everything that happened, I still want her to become better but for herself not for anyone else or the world's sake, Zuko already did that.

I rather Azula stay a villain. A good villain will bring the best out of the heroes and the story. Azula could be like the frieza of avatar. That is to say she takes the lesson from our heroes and used them to work for her while staying as a villain.
@AntoineBandele

That would be my first choice as well. But they clearly don’t want her being a pure villain anymore. I think because she’s so young.

I was thinking that best ending Azula could have would probably be... death. Yeah, I know. Sounds too harsh. But she basically have no goals to achieve if she won't be a Fire Lord, she have no friends left, she don't have normal human understanding or being a member of society at all. There will be nothing left in her if she let go all the evil. What she will do if she realizes that all her life she could have a human characteristics such as empathy, kindness and etc. and that she rejected everyone in the world with no one left to care about her? Zuko might care, but I don't think she will realize that even after redemption arc. Aang would have more hard time to do that, but she still would ignore that possibility. She left with nothing in this to hold on to other to just... give up everything. I always imagined her go during a lightning casting since there is a rule about moving it through stomach and not heart. She could move it to her heart by miscalculation or just being on emotions (with her current state it would be possible).

No it was even worse. She didn't get a rushed redemption arc, she spun in a 360, to end up right back where she started. it's just a filler that was never meant to go anywhere.
