It's also purposefully making fun of how movies will have "the boys" be in a group and then some girl is the butt of the joke or they'll go, "That's enough outta you" in all the "manly shows". A lot of the toxic behavior the women of this movie show men are clear mirrors of how women are portrayed in male centric movies. So if we guys have a problem with it now that it's towards us men, how come we didn't when it was reversed? (Example: A movie where there's like a nurse or something and then she reacts to something and all the men tell her to calm and contain herself and then chuckle and go on talking without her. Or men around a dinner talking and etc then the women says something and the husband goes, "You shut up about that! No one asked you" and everyone just cringes or etc but move on like he wasn't just a jerk and the movie has no consequence for his actions)

I think you missed the point when Ken said "he felt respected in the real world" and "how does it feel." It's really about the patriarchal culture where men depend on women's emotional labor to make them feel validation. Barbie's responsibility isn't to make feel Ken valid. Almost the same with how Riley was making Buffy feel.
@unclewiley1986
@unclewiley1986 10 месяцев назад
Yeah, one undermentioned things about the movie is the sheer disparity in BarbieLand and KenLand. The Barbies weren't worried about the Kens and tended to ignore them which, rightfully, upset them. But Kenland enslaved the Barbies and Ken wanted Barbie to HURT, he destroyed her life and friends and still wanted her to validate his emotions. It plays into the theme of the movie so well.

another part of that same scene that really stuck with me was that he says "people respected me just for who i am". women are never respected just for being women we're respected for what we can provide to others and even then a lot of times we're still not respected. everything's reversed in the movie so to hear a man (or a ken ig lol) be so touched by that concept really got to me since it's a concept us women are never really gifted. we literally dream about the possibility of having that and its even the whole point of Gloria's speech: the expectations put on us to perform in order to be accepted and "respected for who i am" and then still not getting it even when we abide by those rules.

Space toys were big back in the day during the space race, and Astronaut Barbie was created in 1965. All the toys and items on set reflect real toys! The biggest bummer was how much you don’t know about Barbie because you would appreciate this movie 1000 times more. Anything you see in Barbie land is an Easter egg and was once a toy. It’s incredible. Down to the hairstyles and costumes, cups, plates, straws, stickers. Literally everything. They used so much pink for the set that they created a world shortage of pink paint. lol

To be fair, you can't really expect a dude to know about Barbies if he didn't have a sister who played with them or parents who were open to giving their kids any kind of toy. I think what was ACTUALLY a shame in this reaction was how he didn't pick up on any of the mistreatment women face. Like f. E. a Ken gagging at a Barbie having flat feet although all the Ken's have flat feet.

The part where the Ken "discovers" the Barbie with glasses' real beauty by removing the glasses, is a direct reference to She's All That and Not Another Teen Movie. The first movie plays it straight, where the girl has a makeover, the first step is always to loosen their hair and remove the glasses. Not Another Teen Movie parodied that by having the beautiful actress wearing overalls (with paint on them), glasses and her hair tied with a band, while everyone in school who looked at her was gagging and saying she was the ugliest girl in school. I'm sure there have been older movies where something similar has happened, but I think those are the most notable examples.

@Nicamon Is someone who doesn't feel beautiful likely to make the distinction when they're in that emotional state? How people feel is part of their reality, so if someone doesn't feel pretty, especially when they're in a state where they're crying over it, to them, it's not a feeling. It's a fact, and it sucks. It's why people can get addicted to cosmetic surgery. It sucks. Like...my husband thinks I'm beautiful. I know he does. He tells me frequently and I can tell by how he looks at me. And on a good day, sometimes I can look in the mirror and...kinda see it? But most of the time, I look in the mirror and I'm just like..."ugh, gross," cuz all I see is scars, a big nose, my skin condition, and a tummy that's...not quite flat... and in those moments, it's like "how could anyone possibly ever find me attractive?" But here we are, together for 13 years and he still looks at me like he did when we just started dating. Meanwhile, there are others in my friend group who look like friggin' runway models and still don't think they're beautiful. Body image problems can hit anyone, no matter what they look like.

The point is Margot Robbie DID look beautiful in that moment and so the joke DID make sense. I'm sure Margot Robbie CAN look ugly(or different from a Stereotypical Barbie if she,say,has brown hair..that would be kenough to say that she's not"Stereotypical Barbie Pretty"anymore because she _would_ likely be pretty,but _not_ as a Stereotypical Barbie),but she didn't _in that specific moment_ that's why the joke worked for me.

Sorry to say but I think you missed the whole point of the movie. This is a satire of how women feel in the real world. The Ken struggle is like a reversal of how women can feel. It’s meant to be seen through male eyes in hopes that you guys will kinda get what we go through. Sadly, every single guy that I’ve seen react to it chalks it off as “just fun” or kinda feminist but they all seem to miss how spot on this movie hits patriarchy and how it hurts all of us.

AMAZING. also the way McKinnon says to the first Barbie who comes back to reality from being brainwashed. "YOU'RE back. SHE'S back!" it is so oddly specific and for lack of better explanation is "weird". just like how she says "may I please have sanitation" to the cabinet position the president offers her. almost like she's going to burst into tears. It wasn't until THIS movie that I realized he was not a Ken doll, but a rare masculine doll in the Barbie universe. I'm bummed I no longer have him. On a related note, the best boyfriends were the GI Joe dolls of the same size, with more definition and actual hair. My neighbor brought his 'action figures' over and we played all kinds of situations. Threw balls, played house. The whole nine yards. Then the GI Joes were shrunken down and no longer compatible with the babe Barbie. Bummer.

Some people thought Ryan Gosling was too old to play Ken and he had a good answer, but Barbie can be president so she has to be 35 or she is a doctor, with college, med school and internship. Barbie was always a career woman, so Ken at 40 isn't so bad. Ryan said that since no one wanted to play with Ken when did they start caring. His own daughters said they didn't know why he wanted to be Ken because no on plays with Ken.

I actually did play with my Kens just as much as my Barbies and had quite a few of both, but I don't think this was common. It's pretty weird, I guess, LOL, but I could identify with both Barbie *and* Ken and didn't really see one as better than the other. This movie brought back so many memories while still bringing a profound message.

I loved the movie when I saw it in the theater. I anticipated liking it before going in, but I liked it so much more than I had even anticipated. The discourse around the film has never made sense to me. It's not "anti-men" like some people claimed (did they even watch the movie?), nor do I feel like it "wasn't feminist enough" or whatever.... Idk, I just think that so many people overthink or expect too much, and tend to judge things on what they AREN'T, as opposed to what they're meant to be 🤷 It's a wonderfully produced and funny movie, that touches on some more serious themes and has a few truly beautiful moments.... What more could anyone want from a movie like this? Yeah it has its flaws, just like everything else, but everyone I personally know (regardless of gender identity, orientation, political views, etc) enjoyed it for what it is... I loved it and can't find air to see it in its entirety again ❤
@ryans3795
@ryans3795 10 месяцев назад
This movie had the potential to fail more than the potential for success. So props to all involved for making a meaningful story. The discourse ahead of the movie makes sense though. My sister has been a feminist and her world opinion especially on the patriarchy are not well founded in reality, in my opinion. So any movie that wants to come out and tackle the patriarchy with the emphasis that the patriarchy is bad while the matriarchy would fix all the problems is a rough idea to sell to everyone. The messages in the movie are much better than what it sounds like on paper. The patriarchy in the real world was done in an extremely feminist making it seem dramatically bigger than in reality. So, it's not necessarily perfect, but as a movie it works and was much better than I anticipated it being.
@ryans3795
@ryans3795 10 месяцев назад
If you hear that you being yourself is a problem enough, then a glorified version of that seems bad. It goes along the line that people are dramatically influenced by all the technology in the world. Besides the patriarchy topic, shows and movies purposefully force things in media that are not needed to particularly change the viewpoints of the watcher, and is prevalent in teen shows. For some topics, people can think more of something will lead to a worse society should it be pushed extensively. Though people should have watched the movie before throwing such a fit lol.

I had Earring Magic Ken, shown towards the end with Sugar's Daddy Ken (which I didn't have). But I had already grown out of playing with Barbies and Kens -- yes, I played with them both equally; I loved my Kens, lol -- when my grandmother with the best intentions bought me a Ken doll. Earring Magic Ken. He was absolutely Gay Ken, vibrant and flamboyant, and I thought he was awesome even though I wasn't playing with toys anymore as I was beginning my teen years. He had this round "earring" worn around his neck, and we would joke that it was his c*ck ring! I ended up losing him in a move, unfortunately. I would have liked to have kept him.

Always good to see people (men especially) actually getting the message of the movie instead of being offended or cry about how "woke" and "feminist" it is. This is about how the patriarchy hurts BOTH women and men via gender stereotypes. It's a commentary about how women are viewed as LESS THAN in the real world and how men are told what a "real" man is supposed to be like (into trucks, beer, women, fighting and not in touch with their feelings). Ken's entire existence is based around Barbie, which is how women are often viewed in the real world. The message is that we're EQUAL and WORTHY on our own. Barbie doesn't just exist to look good and Ken doesn't just exist to be Barbie's boyfriend/sidekick. They are enough on their own (or Kenough). Some people are confused by the ending but I think it's genius. Because, aside from the fact that they have emphasised that she is a doll and therefore doesn't have a vagina, going to the gyno is just a part of being a woman/having a vagina. It's so mundane and something we don't really think about. It symbolises Barbie transitioning into a human/adult, similar to girls going go the gyno for the first time representing that transition from girl to woman. This is significant because Barbie's worldview is very childlike. Also, a little touch not many people notice in the final scene is that Barbie is wearing pink sandals, a combination of Weird Barbie's choice between a brown sandal and a pink heel. This shows how she has found balance between Barbieland and the real world. The movie is simply about a bunch of people (and dolls) having an existential crisis. And also patriarchy, feminism, capitalism and consumerism. It's poking fun/observing all of those things while also being a part of the problem. Because Barbie is a brand and it's a critique of branding. But at the same time it further establishes that branding. Margot Robbie is fabulous as always but Ryan Gosling just took it to another level as Ken! I also think America Ferrera's performance is very underrated. Some Barbie/Mattel facts: Ryan Gosling's Ken is inspired by Sun Lovin' Malibu Ken from 1979. Allan is a real doll from 1964 and Ken's best friend (only friend really). His girlfriend-turned-wife Midge also appears in the movie (pregnant Barbie). All the Barbies/Kens and the outfits in the movie were produced by Mattel at some point. Sasha and her friends closely resemble Mattel's 2002 "MyScene" dolls, who were introduced to compete with Bratz. One Barbie is played by Hari Nef, a transgender woman. The first transgender Barbie was inspired by Laverne Cox (famous actress known for Orange Is The New Black etc.) and released in 2022 as part of the Tribute Collection series honoring iconic women. Fun movie/behind the scenes facts: Ryan Gosling accepted the role after seeing his daughter's Ken doll lying face down in the mud next to a squished lemon. He then took a photo of it and sent it to Greta Gerwig, saying, "I shall be your Ken, his story must be told." Also, he improvised the "sublime" line as well as the shot where he is wearing two sunglasses. Mark Ronson wrote the song "I'm Just Ken" largely as a joke and recorded a demo for Greta Gerwig not seriously expecting it to be included on the soundtrack. However, she liked the song and when she shared it with Ryan Gosling he felt so strongly that it added to the character of Ken he successfully advocated for it to be made into a musical number in the movie. Mark said he was amazed how much Ryan's interpretation of the song improved from the original. Barbieland was created almost entirely using practical effects. The backgrounds were all hand-painted and most locations like the Dreamhouses were real sets. The transition scenes between Barbieland and the real world were also practical, using old-school movie tricks to achieve the feeling of motion, such as crew members turning cranks to make waves move in the ocean. At the end of the movie, the montage of women is footage of the actual cast and crew's family and friends. The shot of the woman applying blush to her cheek is a friend of Margot Robbie's about to get married. The older woman on the bench is played by Oscar-winning costume designer Ann Roth (though she did not design the costumes for this movie). That scene was supposed to be cut but Greta Gerwig refused. Margot Robbie revealed that while working on this movie she found an old bucket list with one of the goals being "Meet Ryan Gosling". America Ferrera's husband in the movie is played by her real life husband, Ryan Piers Williams.

I more or less expected the Barbie side of things, but what I wasn't expecting was the issue with the Ken's. That caught me off guard. And Gloria "de-programming" the Barbie's was painfully true to the real world. Ken's issue was surprisingly solid as well. He just wanted to be seen and respected by Barbie as who he was. And when he wasn't, he flipped it so she would feel his pain. And in the end, the Barbie's realize they aren't the be all end all, and the Ken's realize it's okay to be who they are. So surprisingly wholesome and good message all around. Also, it's just a damn fun movie to watch. Will Farrel is a hilarious character and so good at doing that kind of role. Weird Barbie is just too amazing. The whole thing really. They did a fantastic job. John Cena as a male barbie mermaid though... that seals the deal.

In my head I have the possibly apocryphal factoid that Allan was interpreted by a lot of customers as Ken's gay boyfriend - all Ken's clothes fit him, etc. This was NOT the intention of Mattel at all so they panicked and discontinued him instantly and brought him back years later as the one who knocked up Midge or something - so Alan couldn't possibly be gay 'cuz he fucked Midge, ya see. It seems surreally silly to imagine corporate board meetings about such things, but corporate America is a weird place - particularly toy companies.

I have a back and forth with this movie. I was really vibing with it right up until Barbie took Gloria and Sasha to Barbieland, and then it kind of lost me. Sasha was a bit insufferable to me which is probably the point since she’s a teenager, but to me with the narrative the movie built in the first half the second half should’ve been predominantly about the mom and daughter repairing their relationship while they were saving Barbieland. In the end though, I felt Sasha took no responsibility for how she made Gloria feel and the theme of equality was lost towards the end with all the jokes about using male stereotypes to oppress the twins. The thoughts of death were also undermined with Gloria’s husband being alive. I felt the impact would’ve been better personally if the Dad had passed away. Otherwise though I think this is a really cute movie and the satire was awesome, just definitely thought they could’ve done some stuff better.
