Something that a lot of people miss: when Warner asks about the costume, Elle pointedly does not throw Vivian under the bus, and just says she did it on her own. It's Vivian fault and she's Warners fiance, but she STILL didn't tell on her.

This is such a ground-breaking movie, especially for 2001. The fact that Ellie went there for Warner but in the end realised he didn't deserve her and she actually started being there for herself. And yes, she found love with Emmett but that wasn't the focus of the movie. Also she didn't have to change. She still liked fashion and make-up and pink while being a kick ass law student. She showed people everywhere that you don't have to chose between looks and books.

To prepare for her role as Elle Woods, Reese Witherspoon spent two weeks studying the behavior of sorority girls, as she did not wish to portray a stereotypical airhead sorority image. She states on the DVD commentary that they were all very kind and polite, and she enjoyed her time with them. She also observed women shopping from the café at Neiman Marcus, and attended law school for a day.

I really like the message of first she goes to Harvard for the wrong reason but she realizes the error and starts to do it for herself instead. I also like that Vivian and her become friends in the end, I think Vivian was blinded by her jealousy of Elle and it caused her to dislike her even though she knew nothing about her, clearly the stereotyping that she was the pretty popular girl type was another factor. But once she got to know her better she realized she was an honorable person who wouldn't throw people to the wolves just to get ahead in life unlike Warner. And Warner probably never told Vivian he only dumbed Elle because he needed a "Jackie" at his side for his political career.

The counselor said she needed at least a 175 to get in. The LSAT question we heard was a real sample question from the actual test. This is one of the few instances that implements the "study with distractions" method, and it pays off. Basically: never try to study quietly. It'll do nothing but make it worse for when you take the actual test. You study with distractions, anything quieter will feel like a piece of cake. And on the flip side: if it is noisy, now you're used to it. And as for her score: A perfect score is a 180. And she got a 179.

Someone copied my comment from another video but this movie was groundbreaking in 2001. Elle went to Harward for a guy and stayed for herself. She also found love with someone who truly loved her. She gained respect from the people who used to look down on her for being a "dumb blonde" but still kept her femininity. It was indeed based on a book by Amanda Brown. There was a sequel (although not good as this one) and the 3rd one is in the works. There is also a Broadway musical which premiered in 2007. Reese Witherspoon and Selma Blair (Vivian) starred in Cruel Intentions together, along with Sarah Michelle Gellar and Reese's ex Ryan Phillippe. Victor Garber (Callahan) has been in a bunch of stuff but you probably recognise him from Titanic as Thomas Andrews, the designer of the ship. Luke Wilson (Emmett) had his film debut with his brother Owen Wilson in Bottle Rocket. Jennifer Coolidge (Paulette) was hilarious in a teen rom-com called A Cinderella Story and on the short-lived Friends spin-off Joey. Ali Larter (Brooke) was in Final Destination. Linda Cardellini (Chutney) was Velma in the Scooby Doo movies. Holland Taylor (Prof. Stromwell) has been in a bunch of stuff like Two and a Half Men and The Practice. Raquel Welch (ex-Mrs. Windham), who died earlier this year, was also in a bunch like The Three Musketeers. And Matthew Davis (Warner) was in The Vampire Diaries. Fun fact: A perfect score on the LSATs is 180 and Elle got 179. Also, the last scene with Elle and Warner outside the courtroom and the graduation scene were not a part of the original script. The two scenes were shot in England some time later because Reese Witherspoon and Matthew Davis were filming there at the time (you can see her hair and make-up are different from the scene before). They were also the only ones present during the graduation scene. The other actors filmed in LA and the whole thing was edited together later.

I just have one more comment. I don’t want to get too deep here, but I do have some things to say. So, the woman who played Chutney was Linda Cardellini, who is actually quite the brilliant actress. I very highly recommend seeing a series she’s in called Dead To Me, where she stars opposite actress Christina Applegate. The lady who played Vivian Kensington is Selma Blair who is also a great actress. Actresses Selma Blair and Christina Applegate have both sadly been diagnosed with MS (Multiple Sclerosis) Selma has spoken publically about it and there are even some documentaries you can watch about her life. She has had some very unfortunate and tragic things happen to her in her lifetime. Christina Applegate along with the help of close friend, Linda Cardellini, who helped her up to the podium, did an acceptance speech when she received her Hollywood Star on the Walk of Fame. Christina and Linda developed a very strong bond working together on Dead To Me. Dead to Me will likely be Christina’s last acting role, because on the set of the show she was barely able to make it through filming without the use of a wheelchair and lots of help. At this point, she is retired. Both of these women are strong and admirable and they have my undying empathy. I’ve always loved them and will truly miss them when they are gone. Here’s to hoping that both Selma and Christina have a blessed and fruitful life surrounded with lots of love and support.

The film has so much charm and the casting was really good in this, Reese did a fantastic job she was such a likeable protagonist It was nice to have a lead who’s kind and caring but also not really care what others thought of her, and that she’s really intelligent but people take her for granted because of her physical appearance, I like how her friends and the girls from the sorority were all so supportive of her even though sometimes they did not understand what was going on, the “you bitch” never fails to make me laugh, and professor Callahan hitting on Elle was such a shocking moment for me when I first watched it, unfortunately it felt like one of the most realistic things that happened in the film which made me a bit sad

Please please react to “Can’t Hardly Wait”. It’s one of my favorites of it’s genre. Along with “10 things I hate about you”and “Empire Records”. I can’t remember if you’ve reacted to 10 things, but both of these would be great as well! I haven’t watched this video yet, but I’m excited to watch! It’s a fun movie and I always enjoy your reactions.

There's an amazing video here on RU-vid about Elle being "new money" versus Warner and Vivien being "old money". Really interesting discourse on class and socio-economic status in the United States. There's a much deeper layer.

This one's actually a little like Buffy. Both confronting stereotypes about pretty blond girls and more. And if you're watching older movies, I'd recommend Ladyhawke and Flight of the Navigator. They aren't romcoms but Ladyhawke is at least a romance and has a few jokes in it with Matthew Broderick's character.

I love how Ellie is positive and optimistic, but she's also brave and works hard and she's genuinely smart. Like she takes shit so gracefully and I'd be like 4 types or broken in the same situation. Shes so loyal and has a very sturdy moral compass.

Don't know if anyone has pointed this out but Reese Witherspoon auditioned for the role of Cher in Clueless. Kerry Washington auditioned for the role of Dionne. The two ended up making a show together "Little Fires Everywhere" in 2020 Another good Reese Comedy from 1999 "Election" It is a dark comedy.

There's one specific message from this movie that i really appreciate even in today's age, which is that women don't need to tone down their femininity to gain respect. I think at times people can feel that they have to act more masculine and serious or just underplay their more feminine qualities or otherwise it undermines their respectability, which is of course both sexist and toxic. I really love that this movie said "screw that!"

This is one of my favorite rewatch videos. The ones I have to rewatch anytime they are on, especially reaction videos. She is also in two of my other favorite rewatch movies: Pleasantville and one even Reese Witherspoon fans don’t always know about- Freeway. I definitely recommend both- the former is big feels and good vibes, the latter is a psychological thriller/comedy. Some of my other favorite rewatch movies: Blast from the Past, Fried Green Tomatoes, & Where the Heart Is.
