Great video, Alex. Speaks volumes about your thoughtfulness, dedication to your sport, and integrity. Really enjoyed it. Oh, and I love your cool office with its fantastic wall! Thanks!

Another hard thing related to working in MTB is not even as a rider, but background roles - design, engineering, PR, sales… most bike jobs are outside the UK and so rare as companies are actually quite small in size. So for ‘workers’ who crave a non-riding role in the MTB industry it’s just as hard. I’m a Scottish journalist to trade but now work in media management/PR - would love to work in bike industry as a writer but the opportunities are so slim.

It’s a very small and collected niche that’s for sure

Appreciate you doing this and offering some guidelines. I wonder if it might also be a good practice to replace the views of the last 10 vids with total views in the last 12 weeks (or some number of weeks). Seems like using the last 10 vids wouldn't take into account evergreen content. Of course, this might be more relevant if the planned content is going to be evergreen. Would dig hearing your thoughts.

I love creating content so I decided to mix that with riding. Although I’m very new to the sport still, I create content based on my progression journey within the sport but I also started making videos where I showcase the learning process of certain mtb skills. People seem to like it and I’m just passed 200 subs, still a long way to go I’d love to be monetised etc but hopefully one day. But making content alongside a medical degree is hard so I just create content as and when currently

Very interesting topic for me. I can't ride MTB very well at all. started about a year ago at age 51!!!! but seem to be created my own little niche of showing the progression journey . Im closing in on 500 subs and growing steady! I probably average about 600-900 views per vid in first month of release. Not great but like I said it's early days. At what point would you advise approaching brands? My first goal will be hitting YT monetisation (hoping to be there by end of summer). Ps i'm only about 2 hours from you in Northumberland!!

Extremely interesting content and useful. I agree there are a lot of highly talented MTB riders that won't be capitalising on their talents. Just putting this one out there though , where does a "talent" go when the numbers drop off, and when does a rider decide not to produce dynamic content due to age and it's natural constraints. ( it comes to us all ) Is that the time to then consider different income streams and not be pressured by having to feed the media monster ? I don't wish to pour water on the flames but I have seen the passage of many ex pro's, personally I would always want back up plans for different stages of life etc. I hope this great video stimulates comments and theories Yours in sport

If only we could all earn money doing our hobby and passion. Back in the real world that’s not the case for 99% of people. Applying your skills to other industries would likely be more profitable, you’ll just need to suck up that it’s not necessarily your passion.

Hi Jim, see where you’re coming from. However, I do disagree somewhat. I do live in the real world. I have bills to pay, good to put on the table etc. Thanks to the internet, we’ve all got access to the tools & ways of communication to turn a passion into a profit. Sure, it may not be for everyone, but it’s available to everyone.
