"No-one's perfect, including me." Spot on. I found it very comforting, when out on an IAM run, to hear my friend (who qualified as a Master, with Distinction) tell me that there was no perfect driver and not even a perfect run. Something also echoed by Reg Local, an ex-Police Driving Instructor, whose channel I follow as well as Ashley. On a presentation course, I learned that, "Practice makes proficient" is a far better adage than "Practice makes perfect" because, as the presenter pointed out, nobody is perfect. I know I learn every day. But leaving down the burden of trying to become perfect actually helps people relax and do better.

I'm sure Ashley is aware, but his choice of car will influence people's opinions and initial reactions to him. Funnily enough, I know I've entered the town I work at in north cheshire because you'll be tailgated by a Range Rover. The stereotypes are real, haha! We all live in our own bubbles thinking we are doing the right thing or in the right. But it takes real character to look back at our actions or interactions and judge ourselves honestly. I admit I have done similar but worse. I am a lorry driver but at the time I was in my car with my disabled wife and son when a coach cut me up on an island, it had been a long, tiring day and I flipped! I overtook the coach and bought it to a stop, I went to the drivers window and said "It's right hand lane to turn right at an Island, you are a professional you should know that!" Then I walked away knowing that I put all of his passengers in danger because I was angry and stupid, luckily nothing came back to bite me and I learned where my anger limit was. Never done that again.

The exact reason I never say anything to anyone unless it was genuinely a life threatening moment is as you said “no one’s perfect”. I mess up from time to time and I’m a professional driver. People make mistakes, people go places they have never been before, drive on road types they have never driven on before, and I’ll be honest 90% of the “idiots” I come across are good motorists that had a lapse in judgment for just a second or made a genuine mistake. The other 10% well they’re not even worth mentioning really, because we all know the types of people they are

Agreed - I did have a driver of a ford focus nearly take me out while I was cycling by attempting an overtake on a blind bend on a country lane. A car came the other way I stuck my hand out as he was going to drive me off road. - He blamed the other driver for coming round the corner too fast. Maybe you shouldn't overtake on a bend I shouted. - What was I supposed to do? stay behind you was his reply. He then threatened to get out the car and smash my face in. There was a cycle track just 50meters ahead which I turn onto. - As you say 10% are beyond reason. I calmed down pretty quickly - don't let numpties ruin your day. I'd have let him chase me far enough from his car for me to double back and let his tyres down.

Being able to own up to my own mistakes and failings as a driver is what's helped me to improve. It's a constant battle to stay cool and gracious. Despite watching loads of these, I still find myself getting wound up with completely trivial incidents. I think I would have tried harder to let the ambulance pass (irrespective of my need to turn right) and if that hadn't been possible it would have added to my frustration and increased my temper. I, and the ambulance driver, thought you braked a bit too harshly. It was sudden enough to catch him out. I think he recognised, much to his credit, that you were having a worse day than him, even though he had screwed up and got lost. Well done though for calling yourself out - good example to all.

I like how even in this video (primarily about how you reflected that you could have done better) you are giving some great learning points to the viewers on other issues. The being wary of others and being inclined to not trust them, keeping extra distance etc. when they've behaved erratically is something I've always done. Sometimes when my wife is driving I'll say "watch them" if I've spotted something dodgy and she hasn't. A huge part of staying safe on the road is not getting involved in other people's buffoonery.
@tiberiancostal1358
@tiberiancostal1358 2 года назад
Good self reflection! That looks like and emergency ambulance rather than just a pick up version. That introduces another element you didn't touch on - what was that driver experiencing a little while before? CPR with a hysterical family around him? An RTA with a broken family to treat and comfort? Someone wife who really didn't deserve the kicking she got? While if that driver was emotionally impaired he should not have been driving, the last person to spot this is the person involved sometimes. Wouldn't an additional valuable learning point here be to use empathy towards other road users in this position?
@leejohnson3209
@leejohnson3209 2 года назад
It's the telling off at the end that probably makes you feel a bit guilty. Especially as it's an ambulance driver, possibly in the middle of a long stressful shift. I try to remember that we're all human. Mistakes don't bother me. It's only selfish and/or incredibly dangerous actions that ever provoke me into communicating my displeasure to any road other user.

Another good honest video, and I guess we’ve all been there and reacted in the wrong way to another road user, so credit for sharing it. I was tailgated by the Police a few weeks ago, and with the privacy glass in my car they wouldn’t have know if it was me or my pupil driving, as it was I was between lessons. The temptation to react was very strong, as I felt intimidated by their aggressive driving, and I’m sure a provisional driver would have been even more so. This is probably the second-most useful thing I've learned from watching all your videos - I used to wave arms around and do faces and look at people. No need. Just do your driving - anticipate, leave and make room, and get where you're going. Keep things flowing, behave courteously and safely and ensure that you can minimize any dangerous situations as you see them potentially arising. The more you do this, the easier it is to ignore any feelings of rage or injustice or fear that happen to involuntarily appear inside you; those feelings come and go and you can ignore them and concentrate on the road and constantly be updating your ideas of who is going to be doing what, and what you need to do. Put your feelings on auto-pilot, not your driving ! Cheers mate.

this is good advice and it's something i've been doing for a while now with my own driving. when someone else makes a mistake, just back off, give them lots of room, and don't interact with them. if you interact with other drivers, it just increases your own stress levels, so it's actually only hurting yourself. yesterday on the motorway, a BMW moved out in front of me really close and i had to break hard... but i just backed off and gave them space. further down the road, i realised that if i had tried to rage at that BMW driver, then i would have just made myself feel angry. what's the point of getting myself worked up?

I just fail to understand why people do it, the ambulance here, stuff like that happens and if its just a few seconds you write it off but its the people who are just a few feet off you consistently, I just go slower when people do it

I’ve been watching your videos for some time now, you have certainly made me a better driver, more courteous road user and helped lower my stress level. We can excuse the occasional error, top marks for sharing it.

The ambulance driver owned up to his mistake which honestly gets my respect but I do feel what you said to him after he owned up was unnecessary and a little too passive aggressive in my opinion

You're generous to share this, thank you. We're all human and affected by neurochemistry when encountering stresses on the road.

I think it's also worth thinking about how much an ambulance crew has going on in the cab. You get sent jobs and job changes and details changes whilst on the move constantly. Bashed back and forth between jobs whilst travelling. It's easy occasionally to briefly look down to check where you're meant to be travelling to on the "satnav" and get distracted.

It’s good that you’ve posted other peoples errors in past videos and commented on them too. It’s great to see you post an error on your part in this video. Full respect for not only admitting it but sharing it for everyone to see (and learn). Respect to the ambulance driver too… for correcting the mistake (moment of tailgating and not continuing to tailgate) and not getting into an argument. Keep up the good work.

Respect to you for recognizing there was no need, your interaction was a prelude to a problem if the ambulance driver had been more unreasonable

That was very humble of you to show your own mistake. The ambulance driver diffused the situation well.

I got too close to a cyclist this morning after not judging the space id have along side parked vechicals and oncoming traffic. The cyclist caught up with me and gave me a prolonged telling off, all of which I just accepted and replied with a short "i'm sorry about" that and was able to drive off and forget. After watching these videos I realised how pointless it is getting in any altercation and I really appreciate you showing your bad sides as well.. because we're all the same when we get into a vehical.

Another great video Ash. I get where you are coming from, but don't be so hard on yourself, at least you know you do have some triggers, as do we all,. As I say to my drivers, the expert driver knows they aren't perfect, as you can never be perfect. All we can do is strive for perfection and constantly improve. Keep up the great work.

On reflection it's always easy to say just let it go, but in the moment it is difficult. I'm also a professional driver and have been guilty of this, and I always look back and think I need to be better. Great video as always Ashley 👍

Ashley, driving is difficult, very difficult. Often when nothing bad happens, I still tell myself off, mentally for what I have done wrong. I do try to be good, but driving is very difficult. I'm glad a driving instructor is always self-monitoring as well. I think it's the ones who don't learn any lessons that are the ones to avoid. Perfect as they are.

Probably one of the best lessons you could give anyone. As you said no one is perfect. This includes blue light drivers. It's quite possible he just watched someone pass away and now he's back on the road!

That’s why you have the dash camera, so you can replay the event. I was told during my advanced driving course, if you are criticising yourself that’s a good sign. It always looks different when you see your actions later.

Don’t be to hard on yourself my friend you were man enough to post the video & as far as i could hear the ambulance driver gave as professional a response as he could keeping it civil & to the point . All no harm done compared to some of the drivers in the video you had to re edit 👍 One thing i have learnt from this is i’ll be turning on the sound record facility on my dash cam as i’ve always had it off 👍 On a side note too i’m now finding that repositioning my rear camera so tail gaters can see it recording them really seems to be working (people don’t like their tail gating faces on camera)😁👍
