"Just Laura Ashley with doilies on their heads" - You have my undying respect for that verdict.

I’m SO surprised that you put Gwyneth’s 1996 version in the middle category. It’s incredible!!!! Definitely the top spot for me. Wow. Shocking! I watched it long before Gwyneth ever became annoying, so that may have helped. And I love her chemistry with Jeremy Northam!

Yes, but Jeremy's collars were bent. That bothered me.

Yus!! I'm so glad Clueless got into the top tier. It will always be my favourite adaptation of Emma.

I’m working through them at a current rate of 1 a year (should probs pick up the pace). I think Sense and Sensibility is next!

I truly do not understand why so many love the 2020 version. Yes the costumes were lovely and the sets, too but I barely managed to finish the film.

Was disappointed that there wasn’t much discussion of the costumes in this, which is what I came here looking for. Was curious to see a comparison of the historical accuracy of the costumes in each of these films.

Finally a place for me to express my disappointment at the affront to womanhood that is Emma's betrayal of Harriet's secret to Mr Knightley in the 2020 film. Still, the costumes were absolutely delicious.

Happy to see Emma approved in second tier…I was disappointed when Lizzie Bennett diaries was placed lower.

My 100% favorite is the one with Romola Garai!!! I also have and liked the one with Kate Beckinsale!!! These two… none of the others

I agree with most of your ratings, but having the Gwyneth Paltrow version only mid-tier is scandalous! The music (by Rachel Portman) and costume/set design alone would make it A tier at least.

I think I’ve seen the 1996 version, but didn’t realize it was Kate Beckinsale. I’ll have to rewatch it!

I like both of your videos ranking Jane Austen film adaptations. Please do Sense and Sensibility next! That is one of my favorite novels other than P&P and Emma. Persuasion (2007) by BBC would be my next favorite film adaption of Jane Austen’s novels.

Did they ever make a film adaptation of Shirley by Charlotte Bronte? I figure you would be the one to know. Yes, I’m a guy who enjoys your channel. Keep up the good work.

Only once in 1922. It was a silent film…. Looks like it may have been lost.

The 2009 miniseries version is delightful. Definitely “handsome, clever, and rich.”

I'd love to hear your thoughts on the costumes in Sense & Sensibility starting Emma Thompson , Kate Winslet and Alan Rickman. It is my favorite Austen film.

That is on the list to do someday- short answer is that they are really beautiful costumes. I have seen some of them in person, and they are really gorgeous (and decently historically accurate)

I don't like any programmes that are based on the adaptations of Emma. Like to be transported back to the era. My favourite was 2009 and second favourite was the 1972 one. Thanks for another interesting programme.

The Kate Beckinsale version put me off a bit because Mr. Knightley kept reminiscing about knowing Emma as a baby. It was just a little bit creepy. My personal favorite is the 2009 miniseries, with Clueless as a close #2. I need to revisit 2020 as I only saw it once.

When I watched Aisha (which in my opinion is better than Clueless) it was already subtitled in Spanish ( my mother tounge) so look for it in English. Well, I have to say "Aisha" is unfairly underrated. It is a fresh, funny, and colorful movie.
@bookmouse2719

Miss Smith was described as being between thin and fat....blonde. Emma was suppose to have hazel eyes, Mr. Knightly was suppose to be tall English Gentleman. Mr. Knightly was 16 yrs older than Emma. I think the 1970s version casted pretty good. I'm re-reading Emma now.

I can't stand Gweneth but that version is far and away my favorite. Mr Knightley in that film is perfect.

Start with “How to Read a Dress” by Lydia Edwards. This should be a good place to start for understanding historical fashion (there is also “How to read a suit” for menswear)

I think Clueless and the other modern adaptations should not be included. I think the setting is very important to tell this story well plus it gives a more fair comparison. It’s not fair to not like one adaptation based on regency because Emma acts like a modern woman (usual criticism of my favorite version Emma 2009), then compare it to a modern adaptation

I quite enjoyed Emma the musical. But the actor playing Mr Knightley was way too old (50+). I would hazzard a guess that he was cast because he was the original Knightley back then years ago when the musical debuted on stage. You can find a couple of songs from other productions - and regency setting makes the play look much better.
