Last year, my little girl “grew out” of playing with Barbie - I couldn’t get rid of them, and then I caught myself playing (dressing them up, buying clothes) with the dolls in private. This movie hit me like a punch in the gut. That and Depression Barbie. I didn’t pay money to get attacked so hard!

No one ever talks about the low level mattel cubicles room. They Don't Have Openings! They are like cages. Literally. Square boxes w no visible escape. I don't know how people can see that image and still think this movie hates men. It shows very clearly a large group of men who are subjugated by the patriarchy. Not to mention Allan being immune to the Patriarchy and voting alongside the Barbies.

54:43 My personal opinion about that is: “Barbieland” is childhood. She doesn’t want to be a little girl no more. She wants to be a person. She becomes a teenager/ young adult. She can face the truths and about her not living in a perfect made up world like children do.

Hey, Barbie! ;) You’re looking so cute today. 1. President Barbie was the BEST. Issa was THE reason I wanted to see the movie. She said they asked her what President Barbie would be like, and she said she’d wear a ballgown and have a president sash. I LOVE that she got her say on that. 2. Weird Barbie was played by Kate McKinnon. She was on Saturday Night Live for many years, so it makes sense you’d have a hard time placing her-you’ve probably seen her play a lot of very different characters.

in my interpretation Barbie's messaging wasn't anything revolutionary per se, it was a lot of basically introductory feminism, but even that isn't shown enough in media so it seemed like this radical thing to men who feel threatened by the concept of gender equality.

Not gonna lie, going into the film I wasn’t sure what to expect but DEFINITELY didn’t expect it to go the way it did 😭🙌 loved it tho, I think some of the messaging was intentionally heavy handed which kinda clashed with the more subtle messages it was showing too but I actually think considering it was intentional it actually all kinda worked when evaluating the ENTIRETY of the messaging the movie tried to convey. I actually thought it did a pretty good job at highlighting BOTH male and female “toxicity”. Just gonna say tho, this movie got a reputation as “man hating” because of how the kens were treated… but it’s a DIRECT reflection of real Life society so all the dudes crying how “woke” it was literally missed the entire point. 🙄 if your salty for the kens but don’t keep that same energy for real life woman than that opinion is crap to me 🤷🏻‍♂️

I'll never understand some of the "he men" group. I fully expected Ken to have no growth or become a full villain, but I think they did a good job showing him in many emotions. And him finding himself outside of Barbie was a good conclusion to me. I'm glad it ended with them just being friends. If they ended as a couple, it would've defeated the purpose of them being seen outside of the other person. And Ryan Gosling can never look like a "wimpy" lol

It is a satire. Satires are exaggerated and ironic. They speak on issues using humor. That was the format the movie followed. The authors flipped the the world upside down to portray Barbie land opposite of the real world. Kens had no power or status or housing except through Barbie. It caused competition and discourse between them. The power structure needed to change so that the Kens felt represented in order to change society. Ken was my favorite character. He did a brilliant job.

Hi Barbie! This movie meant so much to me. More than I thought it would. My teen son who is non verbal, autistic relates to Alan and dressed as Alan when his school did a Barbie Day. Is it a perfect movie- probably not. But it was fun and feeling and made my year. I played with Barbie like you. Then in college my roommate and boyfriend started giving me Barbie stuff ironically when they noticed an outfit or two of mine were on actual Barbies. That snowballed. And became a thing. Now as menopause Barbie, I loved this. I thought it said a lot about humans and expectations, not just patriarchy.

I love what you say here. how wonderful that your son has connected with Allan. I haven't seen a movie this funny in forever. it amazes me that Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig were able to pull this off in such a wonderful and artistic way. I also haven't seen a movie that moved me this much in a long while too. there are so many gorgeous and moving things in this film. and the feeling that "I don't know how to feel" is something I've felt my whole life, and still feel to this day. it bothers me less than it used to however. so we keep moving forward. menopause barbie rules! thanks for posting!

My take on Ken- He was created as an accessory to Barbie so for her he's just there like her car or clothes. Her human, Gloria, said she never got a Ken doll so the Margot Barbie never felt any particular way about him. While who ever played with Weird Barbie probably smashed her with another doll or two. Or the Ken and dark haired Barbie at the end who says "I just miss my friend" Personally, Ken was my Barbies brother because I didn't know what a boyfriend even was when I first got them but brother made sense to me. Then I used my brithers GI Joe and other dolls as boyfriends when I got a little older. So as dolls they mentally seem to be at the mindset of when the person playing with them felt most connect. Which for most was pre pubescent in their understanding about being together.

Hey Barbie! I saw this in theaters and initially I didn't get why Barbie wanted to go to the Real World. But I realized that she's no longer like the other Barbies and feels out of place in Barbie-Land now. She said that she didn't feel she had a purpose and didn't want to be stereotypical anymore and she wanted to discover on her own what her purpose was. So to me that makes more sense. But I agree if it were me, I'd stay in Barbie-Land too, lol. Also because Barbie went to the Real World, she explains that she had a kind of immunity that the other Barbies didn't, which is why they fell for Ken's BS so quickly. As for Sasha, she's voicing a lot of issues that have been ascribed to Barbie over the years (some of which are true.) But Barbie is not the cause, she's a result of what people think Barbie/women should be. Also a lot of girls don't play with Barbies anymore and when Bratz came along it did change that landscape. I personally don't agree that Barbie makes girls feel bad about themselves, for me it was seeing real women in media that ended up negatively affecting my body image and self esteem.

I just want to say, I'm an old white man who 👍 your video bcuz I'm an Allan! and I loved the Barbie movie and I loved your commentary! You got the movie perfectly! None of this anti-men shit! I just want to say, as a wise old Allan, that, at the end of the day, Matriarchy is just as bad as Patriarchy. Women at their worst are just as bad as men at their worst! Cooperative Equality, where women and men share the power and get the opportunity to be equally smart and stupid, is best.

Since my husband retired we all live in a bigger house in Oregon (I grew up in Texas and my kid grew up in Oklahoma). I made most of her Halloween Costumes, the most involved was Columbia from "Rocky Horror Picture Show." They have had a lot of family themed Halloween and I make the costumes. The hardest was "Interview With a Vampire" She was Tom Cruses guy. I wish I could share pictures. But they did Monster High, Pee Wees Playhouse, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Star Wars and my son-in-law was Princess Leia. Scooby Doo.

@shalayahomebodytv
@shalayahomebodytv 10 месяцев назад
See, the difference is Barbie was never TRYING to be mean to Ken. She just didn't feel the way he did. When Ken said it, it was to be petty. Hence him saying "it doesn't feel good, does it," he WANTED to hurt her. And nobody paid attention to Ken in real life because he wasn't marketed as anything but the "groom" or the "date." If you recall, Barbie was marketed to little girls. So I don't see how it's hard to understand how little girls weren't just getting Ken dolls to play with by themselves. Don't blame me. Blame Mattel
@actualkarenokboomer3158
@actualkarenokboomer3158 10 месяцев назад
I think the movie is talking why little boys were not allowed to play with Kens, just GI Joe. I disagree, she really didn't give a crap about how Ken felt and thought just him watching her was enough. She did what is now called objectifying Ken and it didn't matter at all how he felt. How does it feel was exactly what I would say and have said to guys, particularly white ones who think they are being mistreated because the playing field is more level, MORE, not absolutely level. It took years to get them to come out with the Black Barbie. I look at it and understand it how Ken felt because I felt it in the 1960 and on. When guys didn't want to date me because I made more money and climbed ladders because they thought I should be teaching school or being board in accounting for 7 years. I have no idea how bad it was actually being Black or Brown in Texas, but it was not fun watching it happen. @@shalayahomebodytv

Incoming ramble cuz I'm excited to talk about a thing I actually know about! The transition they used is called a "match cut", and the Space Odyssey opening cinematography (which the Barbie movie mirrors scene by scene) is famous for that very cut! :D A match cut is when the two scenes have different subject matter, but you want to express that they're actually related. In this scene, there's a "graphical match" between the rotation of the doll and the logo, expressing "these appear very different but are actually the same thing". This is foreshadowing for how the baby dolls limited the girls to fixed roles in society, but Barbie ends up doing the same in the future. The original scene is a bone instead of a doll, and a weapons satellite instead of the logo. The implication is that as soon as prehistoric creatures first learned to use weapons (bones), they were drawn to them, and even as society advanced far into the future and into space, they end up using their increased resources and intelligence just to make more weapons. The message is "we may think we've come a long way, but in reality, we've never changed". We see match cuts often in film, but they're usually smoother, similar to the edit you made (it's a good edit btw). The one in A Space Odyssey is so abrupt because the cinematographer was Stanley Kubrick, who was known for his innovative camera work and how he broke cinematography rules/conventions in order to better tell the story. In this case, and in the case of Barbie, the intention was to create a jarring effect on the audience (which worked) and make them feel unsettled with a sense of "something's wrong" and "it's not perfect". Which is actually a genius move to use with Barbie, because that's the theme of the film! I actually didn't think of it all so deeply until now (I just thought it was a silly reference done for comedy), so I'm grateful you brought attention to it and I ended up accidentally realizing all those film classes I had to sit though years ago weren't totally useless. \o/

What do you mean the world of Barbie develop overtime? Barbie Land in the movie is toys that talk, but kids are supposed to be moving them. The problem is a kid that is in control of a Barbie is having a rough time and taking it out on Barbie. the world developed when the child got a Barbie.

I meant, did it start off with just Barbie? Did Barbieland pop up instantly? Or did it start with a dream house and then turned into a city. Because if it's controlled by kids playing. They started playing with just Barbie for a min until they made others. Was stereotypical Barbie the only one in barbieland for a long time until the other barbies came? These are just questions that pop in my head. I doubt I'll ever get a clear answer

I was 13 when Barbie came out and never owned one, but made clothes for my daughter's Barbie and all of my daughter's Halloween costumes and to this day everyday is Halloween here. Her friends had theme parties for everything and my grandkids are the same, so I play with dressing big Barbies. We all live together in Oregon now. The last few years is the first time they haven't had a family themed Halloween. The most involved have been all of them look like "Interview with a Vampire", but we did Little Mermaid, Indiana Jones Temple of Doom, Monster High. I did a Halloween Birdcage using Barbies and did a blond Barbie Werewolf, a Mummy Mommy. The only way to share a picture is change my profile picture so I will do that.

@@shalayahomebodytv Barbie Land starts when a kid picks up a Barbie, but and they just put all the Barbies and kids in one big playroom. My daughter had a Dream House and my Granddaughter has a much bigger one now. I was 13 when Barbie came out and never owned one. I have made Barbie clothes for my daughter and granddaughter. I hope you didn't get upset at my comments. I am working on a Birdcage of the characters my Brother did in drag in the 1980s to raise money for an HIV clinic in Houston when no one was doing anything. I am using Kens. Back then they did mostly lip-sync. He is Patsy Cline the most, but he did do Norah Desmond from Sunset Boulevard and he had original named Trixie Truckstop a waitress. I will eventually have Trixie serving the other two in the Birdcage.

Why not have music? Lets just put Ken back under those damn high heels, the Barbies are all sitting around feeling sorry for themselves. Good Lord the Kens have never been allowed to even have a house..

@shalayahomebodytv 10 месяцев назад
When i said that, I meant as far as movie progression goes. The musical had no real point. Like Gene Kelly's long choreography in an American in Paris with Cyd charrise. It's supposed to look nice, but it didn't really progress the story. I never said Ken shouldn't be respected. I said he shouldn't just get respect BECAUSE he's a man. And the barbies aren't sitting around they literally are trying to overthrow the kens and take back the government. And as far as houses go, since they are technically toys, i- I don't care. They can sleep on beach lol, the weather's nice, and it's a good view

@@shalayahomebodytv But it was having him respected "as a man", in the same way we worked so damn hard to get women respected for being women and to objects and getting POC accepted for being POC. I don't think you have to be anything else than a woman, man, gay or whatever to be respected. He didn't have to be a football player or something to be respected.

Midge and Allan are married with a child in full Canon. The movie has Allan at his first setting of just kens friend and Midge discontinued but they don't know all of their own stories. Allan says he's confused at first and then he's angry and wants to escape. He's right to be I think.

@@shalayahomebodytv That was probably me saying it seemed like for a while you were seeming to tell the Kens to shut up and worship Barbie. I did play with Barbies when I was grown because my daughter and I (She was grown, too.) Created a Barbie Halloween Birdcage and entered in in the Oklahoma State Fair and won a Ribbon. We really made weird Barbies, a very blond Werewolf Barbie, a Mummy Mommy with a ponytail, apron and holding a Cuisinart, a Bride of Frankenstein, Bride of Dracula and Medusa. I liked to watch people looking at if because it appeared to be sacrilegious to do that to Barbies.

Technically, that's not Barbie. That's Mattel. And the kids who are playing with them. If this world is just kids playing, then aren't the Barbies' beliefs just a reflection of the kids'? And the company who marketed him that way. But that does make me wonder, do the Barbies and Ken's even technically have freewill, or are their beliefs being controlled by others? 🤯🤯 Where does the free will begin 🤔

@@shalayahomebodytv The Barbies were first used to help women feel power and the movie is to teach lessons about what to do with that power. I thought this was a very powerful movie in that way and also entertaining. I worked at Christmas's at Toys R Us during the 80s, 90s when they finally started making them look a little different. People didn't buy Kens for boys, they bought GI Joe, it appeared most thought Ken was gay. I had a woman in the 80s, ask me if I thought it would harm her 1-year-old grandson if she bought him one those windup toddler TVs if it was pink. I felt like saying, "yes that is what make boys gay, pink toys." I was nice and said, as long as it is a bright color I don't think it matters to the toddler. People were insane and some still are. I love musicals of any kind and I also like singing on the beach. I have been know to dance on a beach. In college we used to go to Padre Island before it was commercialized in the Spring before they had plowed the sand off the roads and play war games and used our tennis shoes as weapons. We chose teams and if he got hit, your were dead until a fellow team member touched you. At night we chose teams and each team had a flashlight and every one had a cup and we would see who could catch the most fiddler crabs.

I thought the movie taught a lot of stuff. When I started work at the telephone company there were men's jobs that I couldn't apply for because I didn't have a penis and they got paid $30 a week more. I was told I didn't get as much pay because someday I would get married have kids and quit and the man would support me. In my case when they finally let us do it I transferred and started climbing ladders and fixing electrical equipment and I met my husband in a telephone school and we made almost the same, but I had more seniority because I am 4 years older. I couldn't take drafting in high school because I didn't have a penis. I also didn't actually have a Black friend until college, nor did I go to school with any. I went to college in Corpus Christi, TX and once of a trip to a basketball tournament in 1967 one of the buses broke down is some small town with a girl's name, like Alice, that still had wooden sidewalks and the only eating place in town had a huge sign that said, "No Mexicans, No N-----ers and No Dogs". They told us the Black or Hispanic kids would be served at the back or we could bring them food on the sidewalk. I was at the telephone company when the decided to integrate the accounting department. I had never had to deal with anything like that. We had a boss who would call us for a unit meeting to complain about using Black people in telephone commercials. The Black girls had to be perfection in every way to make sure another Black girl could get hired, but like Obama had to be perfect so another Black person could be president. They didn't have a Catholic president until I was in high school and all of the Supreme Court were men. None of them were Jewish for a long time and then more than half were and then we finally got Thurgood Marshall, but I am not a fan of Thomas, but I met Antia Hill in Oklahoma. Then we finally got women on the court and now we have 4, but I am not a fan of Barrett. I was raised Baptist, but we didn't get a Catholic President until I was in high School and now 6 Supreme Court justices are Catholic. It appears to me the country is going backwards, taking rights away. There and now you know.

MY first line accounting boss at the telephone company sat behind me before her promotion and she was there the first time Black girl came into our office and she was there specifically to help me through the Christmas season. I corrected IBM punch cards for long distance calls so the holidays was really busy in Houston. I can't remember the girls name, but she was a student at Texas Southern and she came in on Friday to see where we were and make sure she didn't make any mistakes on time or anything on Monday. As she was walking out, our future boss said, "Did I see a N word in this place?" so loud you could hear it in the next county. She asked me who she would eat with and I said, "Me, if she wants to", because I am sure as hell not eating with you. They created a new unit and when they put me in there with her I told them there would be problems, with just me, but the unit would be half Black and half white, and they were not going to do anything to cause trouble. She called us to her desk for a unit meeting in order to talk about our jobs and instead she went into this crap about using Black people in telephone commercials with their big lips. I just said, "Black people have phones and none of us need to hear this." Another time she talked about Black people in shoe commercials and the day after MLK died she did everything but throw confetti. She denied me 3 raises, but the union got them back for me. I have no idea how the Black girls kept it cool.
