The reason they had a box of kittens is because the family owns two cats. We can assume they had a litter. Also the reason Mei Mei imagines the boys as mermaids, confirmed, is that she’s too innocent to imagine them below the waist. Hence the mermaid tail lol

This movie was a pretty accurate representation of teenage girlhood lol. I was a messy kid like Mei and her friends fawning over boy bands and reading twilight. The director said the boy group was inspired by older Kpop bands Big Bang and 2pm plus other international boy groups back then hence why the boys are all different ethnicities. EDIT: Please read the director, Domee Shi's Teen Vogue article. I got my information from her answers in that article.

So I think a large part of the "I'm an adult" or "I'm a woman" thing is that, at least for me and all my girl friends growing up, everyone would say that when you get your period you are now a "woman" and no longer a girl. There's some pretty heavy social commentary there. Girls are usually forced to grow up and mature faster than boys are. I think that's why there is such an obsession with that phrasing in the movie.

This movie is very accurate to depicting what it feels like to be a teenage girl. Disney isn’t trying to say that being 13 is being an adult. She is very much a child. But because 13 is the age that young girls start to transition from being a little girl to a teenage girl or young lady, it’s a coming of age story. When I was 13, I also probably would’ve said something like “I’m an adult now!” To my mom. I also had the hormones, got interested in boys, my body changed, and the relationship between me and my mother evolved. I promise you that every single thing that Mei did in this movie, I and every other teenage girl in North America also did back then.

The reason Disney focuses so much on the relationship with the mother is because the protagonists are typically young girls. Usually, a mother/daughter relationship is more complex than a father/daughter one bc a mother and daughter can see aspects of themselves within the other and their own wants and fears about what they see can create complicated feelings and dynamics. The same goes for father/son relationships. Not saying the father/daughter or mother/son relationships can't be complex and interesting, it's just more typical for it to be the same gendered parent and child.

growing up in the 90s, once you got your period, you were "a young lady now" or a "woman" and everyone expected you to act like it, regardless if you got your period at thirteen, sixteen, or ten. so i think that's where the "adult" commentary comes from, she's simply parroting what everyone else has told her, and also desperate to grow up and be that adult and make her own choices while still feeling very powerless. it's one of those frustrating teenage things, especially for girls. we're told we're women, that we're ladies, we're expected to act older and more mature than our male counterparts and put away childish things, only not given the freedoms that come with growing up. i think that's what they were trying to comment on.

I just saw Turning Red last night. This is a feel good film. It is a breath of fresh air. The scenes can be cringey but in a good way as it makes the film relatable. It is nice to see a character who is quirky without the "I am like other girls" approach. I like how her friends are supportive of her. I am glad they didn't take advantage of it. Seeing Mei simping over crushes reminds me of my teenage years except they are anime crushes. I did attend my first concert at 14 except it was Michele Buble (I went to see it with my family but it was enjoyable). I used to play my tamagotchi. I still have it with me. Although I am not a straight A student, I do want to do well in my studies and not let my parents down. The dynamic between Mei and mom reminds me of my relationship with my mom. It sometimes can be lonely when you think you are only going through this. The fear of having part of your individuality being taken away from you is real. If anything, the portrayal of mother-daughter dynamic, conflict and generational trauma in the film feels real. Although the climax feels rushed, it made me cry. Sure we have our own disagreements but I am glad that she is supportive of me going to art school. As a Chinese I can confirm that the "you lose/ gain weight" remarks, asking you to eat more or what you are doing happens during family gatherings. And yes, they even ask you if are currently in a relationship. The vibe her aunts give reminds me of the typical Singaporean aunties I see in public. I am sure that everyone (regardless of culture) have their fair share of "auntie" moments. You should check out The Joy Luck Club. Like Turning Red and Encanto, it deals with generational trauma, Asian culture and mother-daughter relationship. Overall, I enjoy your reaction:) The song is catchy too. Side meme Me: I am 13 and that makes me a grown up. Also me : How does this work again???

So as someone who had a very strained relationship with my parents, especially my mom, I can say that I love this movie and find that it is very accurate. I remember turning 13 with my friends and having to lead a double life. Being an only child, I was my mom's only focus, I didn't have siblings to hide behind so I had to be perfect. But then with my friends, we thought we were untouchable. Cursing like sailors, reading and writing fanfiction that we were definitely too young for, experimenting with our fashion style. We felt grown up (mostly cause our home lives also demanded us to grow up faster than most) and that is exactly what this movie is trying to convey. That point of no return were kids have to start pulling away, and developing into themselves or risk resenting parts of themselves cause they're trying to shove it down for other people.

This movie was so relatable for me. I really feel like this is the most relatable movie I’ve ever seen regarding what it feels like to be a 13 year old girl. The sheer humiliation when her mom marched her into the supermarket was sadly super relatable. It’s a rough time and this movie honestly made me cry a little.

Watching this just makes it clear that Billy can no longer relate to what it was like to be 13. Of course, he’s a guy so some stuff he wouldn’t relate to because of that. But yeah, Billy, you’ve officially cemented yourself in the role that we all, as children, viewed our parents in lol. I’m 25 and can remember being a weird 13 year old in 8th grade/freshman year. Also, I saw Chris Brown in concert when I was like 10/11 (maybe younger) and I’m pretty sure I left changed lmaoooo Edit: 27:20 thank you lol finally cause it was feeling like you was never 13 😂

The whole thing about being 13 wasn't about being officially an adult. But she's aware she is growing up, and seems very interested in doing things grown-ups do. She wanted her first experience to be at a concert, see her favorite band, with her friends. She was tired of being treated like a child, and wants her mother to treat her as a mature adult. Thirteen is an age of a lot of change in a young adults life.

As a Canadian girl, that grew up in the 2000’s, being the weird anime nerd, and having friends that were into the Backstreet Boys/NSYNC, I had a lot to relate to. Even getting into K-Pop, and having more friends that came from immigrant parents, while I was in high school… there was so much representation in a Canadian setting. I even remember the “Save the planet” stuff happening a lot at the schools during that time. I know a huge thing people are complaining about is the “period talk”, but GOOD! We need more media attention, and talking about periods, without feeling “dirty” about it. This is a natural thing, that many people go through. My mom said that it kept reminding her of me. There was a lot of thought put into this movie. From how red pandas act like teenagers, to having metaphors for puberty, Canadian events and items (Indigenous people’s month, purple Raptors jersey, timbits, etc.) and conflicts within immigrant families, with wanting to have high expectations in a new country to honour your family, as well as trying to figure out who you are as a person, and have fun with your friends. I could go on and on. But between the anime influences, Canadian references, the representation and that I grew up during that time (2002) it was great. (Plus I love red pandas 😂 )
