LOL, I can't believe you actually ended up with Spirited Away as the final film. I can't imagine a more perfect send-off for a Ghibli viewing.

What I find so great about studio Ghibli's catalog is that anyone could tell me their favorite of the bunch and I would immediately understand why without them having to explain it. Each film has something that makes it stand out and/or connects to certain sensibilities.

In the Japanese voiceover for The Wind Rises, Jiro is played by Hideaki Anno, who worked as an animator under Miyazaki on Nausicaa. Anno is a highly acclaimed director in his own right, helming several excellent anime series and a couple of live action feature films (including Shin Godzilla), but is best known for creating the insane arthouse mecha series and cultural phenomenon Neon Genesis Evangelion.

If spiderman across the spiderverse is not on the best movies list at the end of the year, I'M GONNA...go about my day because everyone has their own opinions.

This has easily become my new favorite channel and this series has been incredibly refreshing to listen to. This level of analysis from someone freshly discovering Ghibli films is such a delightful rarity.

Yaaay you finally got around to Spirited Away!! When I first watched it back in college I didn't quite see the hype. I obviously appreciated and LOVED the art, design, and animation... But was just not feeling the story. But upon a rewatch last year... It instantly became one of my favorite films. The final moments of the film spoke to me subconsciously and made me shed a tear or two for reasons I don't think I really fully understand. A truly magical movie. Looking forward to the ranking video!!

I remember when you released your first video in this series, it is absolutely insane to think that was 5 years ago. Thoroughly enjoyed each and every video and seeing you go through this journey.

Man, Only Yesterday needs more love, truly one of the best directorial effort from the master Isao Takahata, at least it gets a solid amount of theaterical rereleases

In lots of ways i got the same feeling from "Only Yesterday" that i did get with "Soul". I can't explain it, but it's like the movies tackles the emotion of feeling lost in the world and telling you that that's okay.

So glad you accidentally saved sprited away for last. It’s one of my favourite films of all time and always my go to when someone asks where to start with Ghibli.. truly sublime

Honestly your review of Wind Rises could have been applied to Oppenheimer word for word. They make interesting companion pieces to each other.

Just these moments with Only Yesterday made me tear up again. It's probably not even a Top 5 Ghibli for me but damn. Every time.

It's certainly odd, given Miyazaki's staunch pacifism, that he'd let Jiro off so light on the whole aiding-war-crimes thing. It put me in a weird place when I ruminated on the film after seeing it. But I'd be a lying Beird if I told I wasn't blubbering when he said 'Thank You' to the ghost of his wife. And yeah, Sprited Away. I've got no hot take. I adore it. The imagination let loose. So goddamn charming and engaging. I wish I had the gears in my head to come up with a story like that.

The one article quibble is that with The Cat Returns, I think you missed out on the suggested interplay between Japanese society and culture and Western culture represented by the cat and human societies.

I'm just gonna say it, the cat in The Cat Returns is hot. He's the only other person besides Gary Oldman in Dracula that can pull off a top hat.

Pompoko is hands down the best Ghibli movie, and yet nearly everyone I meet has never watched it. I really don't think anyone should consider themselves "Ghibli fans" unless they've seen it.

Only Yesterday is my favorite Ghibli movie. I haven't watched this video yet but I see it in the hashtags 👀

Interesting that you do Spirited Away last, considerng that was the way in for a whole generation. Love it, it has the Rule Of Names from LeGuin's Earthsea cycle among its creative DNA too. Same rules. Yeah, good takes all round. Love TWR but yeah kind of questionable, its like Miya-san's Oppenhiemer. ANd you have to remember that his Da was an aircraft designer and that's the world he grew up in. The Cat Returns, its still delightful but incredibly slight compared to the rst of their output. Only Yesterday is just great, kind of as close as they get to a Kyoto style SOL anime. Just Beautiful. My top 5: Princess Mononoke. Tale of the Princess Kaguya. My Neighbor Totoro. Grave of the Fireflies, Pom Poko. And objectively not their best but I'll always have a massive soft spot for Laputa, I saw it at an impressionable age and even though I missed most of the first act it blew my mind entirely and left me with a deep seated hunger for more which would take a decade + to satiate. Least, Earwig. I know you'll not do it but it was not good and that needs to be reiterated. I don't see The Red Turtle on any of these. Sorry to be a nerd but it's a masterpeice. Also now you've done this it is customary to do the 4 Satoshi Kon written / directed films and make something in the same format.

Aw come on man, I fucking love The Cat Returns. Especially the English dub with Tim Curry as the cat emperor and none other than The Dread Pirate Roberts himself (Cary Elwes) as the titular returning cat, Baron Humbert von Gikkingen. And it doesn’t look like other Ghibli films because it wasn’t directed by Miyazaki or Takahata, but that was a conscious choice by the heads at Ghibli because it’s not just a spinoff of Whisper of the Heart; it’s the story in the novel that Shizuku was working on in Whisper of the Heart. And while I recognize that that could be used as a cheap gimmick to explain away anything that might look, or play out as, unpolished (because the end of Whisper of the Heart had Shizuku learning that she had written a good story but that she also needs to continue to polish it up) I think it totally works on its own. And I think this because I didn’t know about the existence of Whisper of the Heart until I bought The Cat Returns on DVD, watched it, and then watched the DVD special features.

I hope that, even if they dont make a vid, you take the time to watch ocean waves, earwig and any other ghibli oddity that escaped this series. They're definitely flawed and in no way represent the studio at its peak, but they have moments of interest and some really good stuff albeit lacking the best execution. Tl:dr, everything this studio puts out, down to its music videos and tv ads should be savoured.

Ohhhh what an ending for this great series. I love these videos soo much, it's so interesting to see your perspective of one of m favourite movies ever. I've only seen Spirted Away, twice. Once stoned out of my gorde, second time was a lone and sober watch because I couldn't recall all of it. Honestly, it's a weird film and one I just could not enjoy. Avoided Ghibli altogether since.
