My dude, the magic is just a lot more than flipping out wands in this Universe. The shark head, brooms, gills, etc, that's more so the magic. It's the implementation thereof. The wands are just an ingredient. Though, I do wish it showed Harry more so learning magic and using it, as it seems like everyone helps him. Also, many wizards and witches don't know how to fight with magic. They can use it, but with those professional in deadly magic, they have little ability to defend themselves. Honestly, that's an issue at Hogwarts too, you'll see soon.

Harry is 14. He didn’t defeat Voldemort as a baby because he’s all powerful or something. They explained that he survived because of his mother’s sacrifice. So he has to learn like everyone else. It’s unrealistic that a 14 year old could go up against these fully grown wizards, especially Voldemort, one of the most powerful wizards of all time. So him just surviving an encounter is impressive.

That’s kind of the point: Harry is the hero who is completely manipulated in a situation he has no true understanding over until the end and even then only in pieces. He literally *can’t* take full control and devise plans and employ attacks because he’s not in control - merely another piece on the metaphorical chessboard between Dumbledore and Voldemort. And as you said he’s a child - a child who knew nothing of this world until he turned 11 and has to learn not only what is taught in school but culture and customs and general knowledge. All while constantly being threatened and almost dying. And having the entire magical community view him as Other because of what happened the night Voldemort “died”. He’s obviously not going to know everything and he’s obviously going to need help from people older and more capable. Especially considering the fact Harry is obviously kept in the dark with info that would have been helpful you can see how that impacted his capabilities. JK was very realistic with this.

The thing about watching the Harry Potter movies is that you really have to pay attention to what’s going on, there’s a lot of little components that help you understand the bigger picture. I think that’s one of the main reasons why you aren’t enjoying the movies as much as you’d expect. And the books are way better then the movies, I’m not even going to sugarcoat that. ALSO I think what was in your mind about magic in the movies was like verbal magic spells with wands. But in the movies a lot of people use nonverbal magic to do tasks. Also Harry was raised by muggles so he naturally doesn’t have the instinct of turning to magic to solve all of his problems. Harry actually used magic in the first task too, he used the spell Accio to summon his broom. Hogwarts would be 7 years of education.
@Ariadne4
@Ariadne4 2 года назад
Exactly. That's what makes Harry Potter so special to some of us. It's not all about magic. It's more about the value of friendship, parental love, loyalty, betrayal, all raw human emotions, and magic is just a cherry on the top.

Billy the “introducing new charter who turns out being evil” is supposed to be obvious. And it’s not just any random charcater, its always the Defense Against The Dark Arts teacher (they aren’t always evil, Ex - Lupin, the werewolf from the 3rd movie) Also, you keep talking abt how theres not enough magic there is, what youre looking for is *spells*. Theres tons of magic. Quidditch, Dragons, Werewolves, Shifting Stairs, Paintings that talk, breathing underwater, ect. If you want more SPELLS from Harry the number 5 is the one for you. I think part of the whole point of the HP series was to undermine “The Chosen One” trope. Harry is a wizard of fairly average magical talent. He can’t succeed at anything on his own. He is the opposite of Voldemort, who, other than his inability to love (and resulting psychosis) was the ultimate in magical talent and raw power, needing no one.
@darthcarnage12
@darthcarnage12 2 года назад
The problem here may be that, rather than Harry getting help from friends in order to succeed, he does very little on his own and most of what he does can be done better by others. This is a big change between Harry in the books vs the movies. He is much more capable in the books and can do things that nobody else can. He still would fail without others by his side and they are better than him at some things, but he is not entirely dependent on others for everything.

"Is this movie going to be all about Quidditch? I wanted to see some magic." He says while they were playing a game on flying broomstick chasing magically enchanted balls while an image of one of the players is magically projected for everyone to see. And at a later point when you complained that there was no magic, he was swimming in the depths of a lake, breathing underwater, in the middle of a tribe of magical creatures, and one guy even turned into a shark. They use magic quite a bit, but it can be a bit subtle. In the underwater scene, Krum did a partially successful transfiguration spell to become a shark, and Fleur and Cedric did the bubble-head charm spell. Harry used a magical herb. During the dragons, Harry used his wand to summon ("accio Firebolt") his broom. Of course, the faux Moody transforming Draco into a ferret and bouncing him around, as well as doing the curses in the classroom. There are magical objects in use all the time, like the foe glass and pensieve. The Dark Mark was put in the sky during the Quidditch World Cup with magic. There really is quite a bit of magic being done throughout the movies, but it's true there is a lot more magic performed/described in the books. The movies don't show it all. Like in Chamber of Secrets, with Lockhart doing that horrendous job of showing how wizard dueling is done; in the books, there were several spells done with a much longer scene than the small glimpse we got in the movie with Draco & Harry. Also, I don't recall if they mention it in the movies, but in the books, some wizards master what is called "silent spells," being able to cast magic without saying the words. You see that whenever someone like Dumbledore points their wand and something magic happens. They ARE casting a spell, but it requires no words.

Yeah that's it. The books (and to some extend the movies) play with the idea of the "chosen one", but all the things that puts Harry in this position are circumstancial and has an external reason. In the books, the "chosen one" is mainly used byt the journalists and Harry doesn't agree with it. It is also stated that the "chosen one" could have been someone else : it was either him or Neville, but Voldemort chosed him because he was a "half-blood" like him. This is an interesting way to use this trope.

i think what makes it special is that at its core, its about friendship, family, love, loss, betrayal, etc.. something we can all connect with. the magic is just the vehicle being used to deliver that to us. some people just arent into that and thats fine :) but its always good to be open minded and immerse yourself in the world by attempting to understand the characters and their motivations. "Someone always comes to save Harry Potter." Yeah there's nothing special about Harry, what's special about him is that he has people around him who love and care for him. That is literally the entire point of this series. Voldemort the most powerful dark wizard, who has committed atrocities to make sure he is the most powerful and immortal wizard of all time, is taken down by a teenager. Not because Harry is the chosen one, but because people are willing to rally to Harry because they care for each other. Also Harry does more magic as the series progresses. He was an orphan boy living in a closet in the first movie, and even in the first couple of movies they're like 11-14 years old. They're learning the magic as they go. When was the last time you saw a pre-teen in middle school do something as well as full grown adult?

ron being upset at harry, while being shitty, kinda makes sense considering he's kinda always in the background of things (even more in the movies which sucks bc i actually quite like ron) hermione explains it to harry in the books: “Does he still think I entered myself?” “Well . . . no, I don’t think so . . . not really,” said Hermione awkwardly. “What’s that supposed to mean, ‘not really’?” “Oh Harry, isn’t it obvious?” Hermione said despairingly. “He’s jealous!” “Jealous?” Harry said incredulously. “Jealous of what? He wants to make a prat of himself in front of the whole school, does he?” “Look,” said Hermione patiently, “it’s always you who gets all the attention, you know it is. I know it’s not your fault,” she added quickly, seeing Harry open his mouth furiously. “I know you don’t ask for it . . . but - well - you know, Ron’s got all those brothers to compete against at home, and you’re his best friend, and you’re really famous - he’s always shunted to one side whenever people see you, and he puts up with it, and he never mentions it, but I suppose this is just one time too many. . . .” “Great,” said Harry bitterly. “Really great. Tell him from me I’ll swap any time he wants. Tell him from me he’s welcome to it. . . . People gawping at my forehead everywhere I go. . . .” “I’m not telling him anything,” Hermione said shortly. “Tell him yourself. It’s the only way to sort this out.”

No. None of that makes a lick of sense. You know it. I know it. Just because it was in the book doesn’t mean it makes sense. This series has a lot of wrong takes. @@chrissmith6097 Yeah, clearly there are some wrong takes in the book series, but this is simply just a case of a character’s flaws and development. Ron is lovely, but he’s also shown time and time again to be hot headed, stubborn, and jealous… just not so blatantly towards Harry before this point. Added on top of that, they are in the beginning stages of being hormonal teenagers, no shit he reacted this way towards Harry. Was it wrong for Ron to do and should he have communicated how he was feeling with his best friend, yes obviously, but that’s not what always happens when emotions are running high and it’s the last straw that broke the camels back. If this didn’t make sense for Ron’s character to do and feel this way, he would have never deserted Harry and Hermione in The Forest of Dean. It makes sense. I know it, they know it, but you clearly do not and that’s okay. The movies cut out 1/2 of the magic in the books. Learning spells in class, brewing potions, etc. On top of that they used the same effect for almost all the spells in the movies. Magic is the entire world around Harry. Nothing wrong with him not slinging spells around willy nilly. Besides he used one spell in the first task, 3 in the 2nd task, 3 in the third task and then one facing Voldemort.

It's funny that you feel like it's missing magic but they've actually used lots of magic throughout the series 😆 And there's different kinds of magic featured. Not always spells used with wands. But they've done alot of that as well I think you don't notice it as much because they're not showing it specifically and letting you experience it. But as the show continues you'll see more spells and them using their wands. But even though HP is all about magic, it's not always the focus. The story of good vs evil, Harry and voldemort. As well as the relationships and friendships in the story are what is the biggest focus.

Hey, I just wanted to give my opinion as someone who likes Harry Potter but isn't technically a hard core fan. So there is ALOT of magic in Harry Potter, flying cars, being able to breathe under water, stairs moving by themselves. But there isn't as many spells (at least in the movies) and they are usually subtle (not big and flashy) and so, you probably don't notice. Harry does use quite a few spells, but it's done subtlety so it makes sense if you missed it. Like when he used the light spell in the second movie and Billy had said he didn't do any spells that movie. (I think he did more but I can't remember). Plus Harry is still young and learning magic, he wouldn't know a whole lot. He's only in his like 4th year? And it takes like 7 years, it makes sense that he wouldn't know too many spells, at least big flashy ones like you seem to be looking for. Also if spells was all there was to magic then magic would be really boring, I like what they did here making the whole world magical and not it just being about spells. Then about Harry always needing help, it would be boring and very unrealistic if he could just do everything by himself. He's a child, and wouldn't have the power or experience to defeat his enemies. He needs more time to learn and grow before being able to do it himself. I really like that he can't do it by himself, it's very humbling and validating.

The whole thing about Harry not using so many spells during the competition is that he’s not old and educated enough to participate. The age limit is set so that the competitors can actually defend themselves and use proper magic, not the elementary knowledge he received these 3 years into his learning journey (this is his 4th year at hogwarts - one book is usually one year in school). In further parts you can see that he grows as a wizard and matures in overall sense, right now he’s only 14 year old who can’t really be blamed for not having the strength and wisdom to defeat such powerhouse as Voldemort

For me, Goblet of Fire is when it gets “real.” It’s the first of the series where shit actually starts to get dark and it only gets darker from here. I think you’re going to enjoy it more moving forward because it stops being as childish. Also, magic is happening all the time (subtle) but keep in mind that these are young witches/wizards who have to be trained. Voldemort and the gang are here which raises the stakes. So the need for these wizards to know more and know how to fight is here. I’m thinking you want to see them use fighting spells? 😂 I promise it only gets better from here, especially when you’re experiencing this for the first time as an adult. Except that this is actually the first time someone they just introduced is the villain. The first one everyone was new to you but the villain was not new to the people in the story, the second one was Voldemort, the third was also not someone new, nor working with the villain. Maybe you're misremembering what happened. I think what you mean is that the story always has a new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher. And there is a reason for that. Also, Harry is a child. He will not (and probably never be able to) defeat Voldemort in a duel without other stuff going on. Voldemort was extremely brilliant and very ambitious and learned about things few other wizards know. Harry can never beat him in a fair fight. Harry's strength is the friendships and the love he has around him, which stands in contrast to Voldemort who is completely void of both. So people who love him and his friends are always going to be there for him. And yes, he does more spells in the books but the movie only focuses on the important spells. Magic is literally all over the movie though. It's not all about the wand work. And they also have rules to how things work so sometimes there just aren't spells for stuff.

Yes, you've got two hands, two legs, and a brain and you can use them to fight but that doesn't mean you can fight against a pro-wrestler. And just because you know how to use a gun doesn't equate you to a snipper. Likewise in the magic world, wizards and witches have wands and can cast spells but that doesn't mean they can all fight against the death eaters. Those are some of the most skill-set wizards and they deal with a lot of black magic. that's why you saw so many wizards running away at the quidditch cup.

You don't want to see them doing magic you want to directly see them doing spells, there's magic all over the movies. The kids don't do spells all the time because they're still learning, they literally go to school for it.

One has to question what is going on in Billy's life if he thinks that all of these things in the movie are happening without magic being involved.

4:44 Billy: That was hot (or maybe hard... subtitles try to tell me he said hard... still thinking Billy said hot, though) Me: OMG this movie is so awful, where in the seven hells in the damn boot, they need to show us that the boot is here otherwise it makes no f****ing sense when Arthur later tells the kids to go back to that boot; OMG Newell, could you please tell the story and not turn these scenes into a goddamn effect fest?

11:11 well if Newell did not go for effects instead of telling the story, he might not have cracked some ribs here; just saying

32:35 This is probably the weirdest bit. Did they make up some new mind control spell for the movie? Because if Krum was under the imperius curse his eyes should not tell anybody and everybody about it.

I’m sure you get this with every movie adapted from books, but you really should read the books. Even with there being eight movies, you only get the highlights of the whole story. You would also get the magic you’re craving. You can always get the audio versions so you aren’t actually having to read them.

It's so funny to me that every time Billy spells a word, I (a non-native English speaker) know the spelling with no problems... But I guess it's because I've had to learn it all the hard way, since everything is written and pronounced totally differently in English than how it is in my native language :D

I love your reactions and absolutely love your t-shirt. While I'm a Harry Potter series stan, you keep it 💯, and I respect that. You mention that Harry gets out of most situations by luck and being saved, and I appreciate that next film Harry acknowledges that. Promise there's more wand-waving magic to come. I know you'll stick it out even if you don't like it, and it'll be a hilarious ride for us.

Billy: He's probably stronger in the books. Me: Yep. For the movies, they cut out a little here and a little there. In the end the movies ended up making Harry look weak when he's really not. They also gave stuff that Ron and Harry did in the books to Hermoine (Heather) in the movies so she ended up look WAY more powerful in the movies than she is in the books. You asked how many years is the school. The school is American Junior High and High School combined.

Book Harry looks like an idiot in points tho, in book 6 Dumbledore tells harry how to fight infiri, then when they do come out the water Harry has no idea what to do to stop them Even in book 5 snape alludes to harry that he knows what's going on in the inner circle of Voldemort but doesnt put one and one together that Snape is a spy

to answer the school year question: yes, every movie, leave the last two films since they are in parts, is roughly a school year. the year always begins on september 1st and is organized like your expected schedule with everyone leaving for summer around april/may. children start at hogwarts at age 11 (first year) and will go up until they are 17/18 (seventh year). so for muggle-born kids, they will probably be “traditionally” schooled in the scheme of our world and then move to hogwarts, where as magical family born children (half-blood and pure-blooded families) will essentially be home school until that point. harry is obviously a strange circumstance to this case, as he is a half-blood that was raised by a non-magic (muggle) family that while they knew about magic because of harry’s parents, refused to tell him so, but his invitation to hogwarts was always bound to arrive whether he was told or not because magic is technically in his dna :)

Keep in mind it wasn't the movies that triggered a cultural phenomenon; it was the books. The movies are fine on their own, but the books are what most fans fell in love with, and the story, characters, and exploratioin of magic are all better in the source material.
