The thing is, that a lot of the "this arc is bad" sentiments for early one piece is shaped by shonen-only anime watchers of the early 00's who wanted every arc to be super "mature" "dark" "serious" and full of fights. This opinion came primarily by these watchers that either wanted to entice people who wrote OP off in favor of naruto and bleach, or defended themselves from criticism from watches of said animes by going "well that lighthearted arc was just bad, I likes the arcs that were dark and broody myself" Since then, that opinion has stuck around like some linkin park listening ghost, spreading to new watchers. Long ring long land isn't a bad arc, it's just the arc just before one of the most beloved arcs in OP that repeat viewers always skip, I personally like it.

Yeah those “fans” were never fans of one piece. I remember when gear 4 was revealed and people thought it looked stupid and was wasted potential. why did you expect something serious for Luffy? Did the last 1000 chapters go over your head? LOL

Luffy is not upset by them cheating because he understands they are dealing with pirates, our crew is not the usual pirates in that context lol, in Luffy's mind things go like this: its ok if they cheat, this is what pirates do sometimes, this doesnt change the fact that im gonna win regardless!

I think it’s really interesting how Zoro has so many captain/classic shounen main character traits (how cool and serious he can be, his sense of honour, his goal of becoming the world’s greatest swordsman, a childhood best friend/rival who passed away, etc.), and yet Luffy (who is silly and goofy) is the captain and the actual main character. The bounty hunters at Whiskey Peak even outright wondered how Zoro ISNT the captain too, which is hilarious - but in my opinion, it also puts into perspective how inherently different One Piece is from other works in the shounen genre. Which is kind of cool in its own way (:

"How do they even win." Other than their boss's devil fruit.... well, despite the fact that they're idiots in terms of wisdom, they make up for it by sheer creativity and quantity of cheats. Sure, most of those cheats are awful, but by law of averages, the sheer number of cheats ensures there's at least a few gems of great cheats mixed among them thanks to sheer numbers.

The canon bits are fine, even enjoyable. It's the non-canon stuff that drove me nuts. And Foxy. I genuinely cannot stand Foxy. Big bro Zoro telling little bro Chopper to shape up is a mood. Of course Chopper takes that to heart, coming from Zoro. I think if anyone else had told him that he probably would have argued back, but he adores Zoro like a big brother, just as much as Zoro adores him.

It's not cheating These episodes are mixed from what happened and what didn't The race was between Nami team and porche team interference was allowed in this game, but they changed many things in this arc

When I first watched this I wanted the commentator and his bird to join the crew.. Just imagine it: they fight the most impossible people while this dude is hyping them up. Missed opportunity imo

Foxy is a lot like Okuyasu from Jojo: he has an incredibly overpowered ability, but he is a idiot.

I have never seen Jojo before but one day when I watch it I will probably see the similarities.. I think Foxy mostly reminds me of Buggy because they are both kinda goofy but have strong devil fruits.

The biggest problem on this arc is that there are no rules other than for the straw hats, so it gets very frustrating and, in time, very not fun

I can understand the frustration with that already. I am all for a challenging battle between crews but if one side disregards the rules it's hard to fully take them seriously.

I would strongly recommend reading the manga for this arc to see what was really intended by oda. The filler that toei added really ruins it all.

@@IcepickEvans unpopular opinion right there, guess I can respect it. Why I dislike this filler: 1. Makes the arc overstay its welcome. 2. Weird forced choices (choosing Shelly instead of chopper, the 500 man gamble reducing the impact of taking the flag at the end, making the games make much less sense) 3. The filler games (dodgeball, roller skate race, red light green light) are... well, not good and the story has no flow other than "what jokes can we make in quick succession?" And how they added filler to the donut race also freezes the whole thing to a crawl and actually removes a fun moment.
