The best part about Mulan was that she didn’t want to be a warrior. She HAD to be. She didn’t start out good at fighting, but for her own sake and her family’s sake she literally HAD to learn. There’s development. There’s sacrifice. In the remake there’s basically no development and she doesn’t make any sacrifices because she’s not doing it completely to help her father, she’s also doing it just because she wants to. It’s such a difference and it’s what I think makes the original eons better than the remake.

Not to mention that in the actual ballad, Mulan was the very typical and very simple everyday girl for her era, like, I-stay-at-home-and-sew, typical. She wasn't about that life. She saw a problem and fixed it. Even if it took her 12 years & no one knew the wiser. Magical-Girl Sailor Moon Mulan wha-?!
@maroonggirl
@maroonggirl 3 года назад
I loved seeing Mulan be clumsy and not that athletically gifted in the animated version. I relate to that so much. The Make a Man Out of You montage of her struggling, nearly quitting, but working her butt off to get to the top of the pack inspires me even now. I can't hear "Let's get down to business, to defeat...the huns. Did they send me daughters when I asked for sons?" without getting pumped up. But the live action is just...she's 5 years old and doing insane roof parkour acrobats around the village. Not like she worked her butt off training to do that like any real world gymnast, but she's got like mystical dragon powers or whatever? This movie in general is giving me big "The Last Airbender (dir. M. Night Shyamalan)" energy. It's recreating a beloved piece of media, changing too much that didn't need to be changed, adding in too much of their own ideas no one asked for, and utterly ruining their own project. So much of it was changed and contradicts the source material, they would've been better off just changing the names and turning it into an original movie. Mulan isn't as bad as The Last Airbender, but it ain't great. I'm not in any kind of rush to watch it again (unless it comes with Trin commentary). If I paid a Disney+ subscription fee AND an extra $20 to watch it as soon as it came out, I'd be livid.

My biggest turn off about the movie is how Mulan didn't need to get stronger. In the original Mulan, she had to struggle to learn to be a warrior (along with all the other men, no one was born being good at their job regardless of gender). She had to face her own insecurities and overcome them, and she wasn't stronger than anyone else. She overcame challanges by persevering, and by using her wits. In this version she is essentially a devine being and was just as good at being a warrior when she was 8 as she was when she went to war as an adult. And she was physically stronger than everyone else, bar none. In the OG Mulan we were taught that anyone can achieve great things worthy of being honored for if they persevere and use their wits. In this movie we are taught that if you are a devine being you can break the societal norms and be rewarded, but if you are not, then you are shameful and should be punished.

If anyone’s wondering, they changed the plot and removed Mushu and the songs because apparently they offended actual Chinese people living in China. They didn’t like how Mushu made a mockery of dragons, which are a very sacred creature in Chinese culture, and the only song that Chinese people liked was Reflection. And they got rid of Li Shang because apparently there were some so-called unacceptable power dynamics between him and Mulan, being that Shang was her general. While I can understand them removing Mushu and the songs to stay truer to the original Ballad of Mulan, I don’t undertsand why they would then go and add in a totally new witch and chi into the story? And not hire a single Asian person in a main behind the cameras role? There was one single person of colour in the main creative roles (director, screenwriters, editors etc) and it was a black man. And the removal Li Shang makes no sense. Belle’s love interest is LITERALLY her captor who IMPRISONED HER for months, surely that’s got to have some wacky power dynamics? When you make a female character only gain her strength through chi, your basically saying that unless girls have magic abilities they aren’t strong. And I know that’s not what the film makers probably intended, but it really just feels like it to me. In the original, Mulan gains her strength and power through hard work and love for her father, not some weird magic ability from birth that doesn’t exist irl. Edit: I didn’t mean Qi (I think I spelt it wrong before sorry) is magical or a super power and I honestly don’t know much about it, but the use of it in this live action does insinuate women need this Qi to be powerful and strong whereas the men are strong off their own accord

@itsbambi92
@itsbambi92 3 года назад
I felt the same way. What made the original so good was Mulan. She was a really flawed and real character! She would forget her chores, she was clumsy, she struggled to fit in, she loves her family, she had a voice and was often shut down because she’s a woman. She was never disrespectful but she followed her heart despite not knowing what she was getting herself into. Mulan is such a relatable character and this new version of Mulan is like another girl power Mary Sue. Just another female character that makes you feel you aren’t good enough to be strong or anything.
@fabiofuoco
@fabiofuoco 3 года назад
Adding to that, I think one of if not THE major strength of Mulan was not physical, but instead her natural problem solving ability! From feeding the chicken using the dog, to causing the avalanche instead of attacking physically the Huns, to climbing that pole by using the weights to her advantage! That was to me a huuuge part of her character, what made her unique and intelligent, and being perfectly balanced between her feminine and her masculine side!
@BabyGirlTiny
@BabyGirlTiny 3 года назад
I think that would be fine, if it was established that it wasn’t a gender based thing and instead everyone had chi but the important thing was how you use the chi that matters. This way you can keep that element, but also keep Mulans cleverness

the old mulan is abt how mulan, a girl, can be just as good, if not better at what men do, because she’s determined and used her brain and stuff. but in the new one, she’s a prodigy. she’s born with a talent for fighting, which makes her better than some men, because she’s born with “manly” qualities. the movie is saying that in order for girls to be successful, they must be “manly”. instead of mulan growing with her peers and learning to use wit and courage and being determined, she skips all that. her sister, who doesn’t possess “manly” qualities, has her destiny planned out, to marry a man and birth children. wtf. maybe im reading in between the lines to much but wtf.

Here’s my take: Mulan is the Captain Marvel of Disney live action movies. Disney wants so badly to be supportive of feminism, but in the process it makes it seem like only girls with special abilities can be with the boys. The original Mulan was intelligent, and powerful because she was smart. Adding Chi to her character made this movie less feminist than the original, making it seem like only girls born with abilities can be on equal ground as men. Disney really needs to stop

Disney did well when they made Brave, Princess and the Frog, and the original Mulan. Princess and the Frog is all about a woman who works hard. I remember being so excited that one of my favorite Disney Princess movies was going to get a live action remake and then every single change they did was a punch to the face: no Li Shang, no songs, no Mushu, no cricket, no grandma, there’s a sister now, she has Chi and is not like other girls, there’s no Yao, no Ling, no Chien-Po, the general doesn’t even die and the whole point of Mulan that I really like is that perseverance and hard work is necessary in order to achieve what you want; also, yeah it’s PG, yeah it’s a musical but the thing that I love about that is that when the song A Girl Worth Fighting For comes on as they’re traveling to meet with the other regimen is so lighthearted and fun and it symbolizes how none of the soldiers have seen war, they just finished training and are going to meet up with the other regiment, BUT the song just cuts off abruptly when they arrive and see the regimen literally massacred and THAT is such a powerful moment in the movie that shows the horrors of war and after that moment there are no more songs in the movie and I love that symbolism and it’s a downright disgrace to name this movie Mulan when they basically spit on the original Honestly the ONLY reason I watched it was because the actress who voiced the original Mulan would introduce the new Mulan and I loved that symbolism of passing off the torch to the new generation but now I’m like, she should have kept the torch Ps: I have read that there IS a Chinese version of the Ballad of Mulan and it’s very well made, it actually tells the original story (in which I think that Mulan went to the army with the blessing of her father after proving that she could defeat him in battle and that’s pretty neat) I haven’t seen it but I have heard that it’s a well made film that stays true to the story so if anyone wants to check that out that’ll be cool too

In regards to the sister thing, in the original source material, the poem, and the animated movie, Mulan has a little brother, since he was underage, he couldn’t fight in the war, so that’s why her father took the job. In the poem his name is (I think) literally Brother, but I the animated movie he is a dog that is named Brother. That’s the one this that kind of pissed me off, the fact that they said it would be closer to the source material but didn’t even make the sister a brother. Tbh, I can't critisize that. They did think little (American) children would watch this just like the Original Mulan. And American children/families don't tend to watch subtitled films. But it does have a huge identity crisis as a film. On one hand, it wants to do these big epic 'real' battles, but like G.I. Joe there's no blood or real war horror. On one hand it wants to be 'very realistic', on the other hand..... witches and misuse and manipulation of Chi as plot armor/magic power.

I don't think that it being in English is specifically the problem, but you're totally right about the film being a weird mix of *trying* to be "authentically Chinese" while also wanting to appeal to a Western audience and being made by Westerners. In the end, no one was happy (except I guess the CCP, since the ONLY message I could discern from this movie was "whether or not you are a woman or a man, magical or not, the only thing that defines 'good' and 'evil' is if you're on the side of the Chinese government or not"). Anyway, there were a lot of things that I hated about this movie, even more than what Trin was saying in the video, but this is just one of the main problems.

Yeah hearing it in English doesn’t make much sense, but that means that Beauty and the Beast and Cinderella should be in another language too cause they both are supposed to take place in France
@TheDawnofVanlife

@@michelletwum1432 Live Action Beauty and the Beast was REALLY weird, because it was mostly UK English Actors playing French characters. But for some reason Lumiere had this thick French accent that no one else had. For some reason I never over-thought it in Animation, but in live action anything that feels off and even slightly unrealistic jumps out more. Like I think the war in animated Mulan was actually done better then in live action. And I think part of it is the essence of animation itself in that we expect talking animal friends and elements that lack realism so when it gets very real (like when Mulan and her squad first encounter the realities of war) it just... Works better.

I don’t mind it not being in Chinese since the target audience was more western and a lot of people hate watching things with subtitles. I just think that they could’ve used this movie to educate people on Chinese culture and history. Instead they just went for a quick and unsuccessful cash grab.

the whole point of Mulan was that she WASN’T some special powerful person, but she found the power and strength within herself when she chose to take her father’s place in the army. it’s her realising she has the ability to be strong, she starts out being kind of a mess, like the best fucking song in the whole movie is of her training and becoming a warrior. kinda loses its impact if she’s already this all-around special warrior to begin with

Mulan was quirky and relatable and funny. She didn't start out a good fighter, she was just considerate and sacrificed herself for her father. She wasn't "born special" with abilities. She was just a clumsy girl who didn't fit in and wanted to prove herself. She didn't always want to be a warrior! And the songs in the movie carried the plot and properly showed emotions! This movie has none of the original parts of Mulan, and the villain isn't even the same! I really dislike the new live action movies but this one really takes the cake

On your point at the end about adding music taking away from the serious tone, the scene in the original movie where they're singing A Girl Worth Fighting For and it's interrupted suddenly by the war scene felt darker and more startling than all of this movie

I wanted to say the exact thing! It really serves that purpose of making the war seem like a “game” to them to actually being taken as a serious thing (in fact there are no songs from that moment on) and removing it takes away from the darkness they wanted to amplify.

I absolutely adored Mulan (1998) as a child. The idea that a girl could be as great as a man, and the way Mulan evolved into a warrior through training and perseverance, inspired me. The best thing about her wasn't her physical strength, but her intelligence. Mulan (1998) was (still is) my favorite Disney princess. But this live action... Jesus, Mary and Joseph. There was no real struggle for Mulan here, she was strong from the start. The scene where she takes off her armor (?) and lets her hair down (???) and then suddenly reaches full power was supposed to be empowering, I guess, but it feels so meaningless. Even more if we compare it to the original: Mulan (1998) was never special, she earned respect through pure hard work. Another scene that pisses me off is the carrying buckets of water thing. It was supposed to replace the original task of climbing the pole with the two heavy medallions. But hear me out: it's stupid. In the original, we see Mulan struggling, rationalizing, persevering to get to the top of that pole. In the live action, she has superpowers. That's it. The message here is: kids, if you're not born special, then just give it up. There's no hope for you. Ah, it hurts me how much it sucks.

One of my favorite parts of Mulan was how supportive and understanding her family was. Like they knew she was different and a bit quirky for their time but they still loved her and embraced her strengths. They just worried that she wouldn't be able to find her place in the world and live a happy life. (Getting a match was pretty much #1 thing for women at that time which is why it was so important) I cried the first time I saw the Dad giving her the 'late blossom' flower speech, I still reference that to this day. Maybe they did show a bit of that and it just wasn't here but I really missed that.

Something I noticed from rewatching the animated Mulan, was that the live action version of her was way too confident. Animated Mulan was clumsy and scared, because if she messed up, she would get *killed*. Live action Mulan stands her ground from point one, never getting that moment of "I can do this" because her mood that whole movie is only that. Animated Mulan isn't strong and that's okay. She uses her brain to figure out ways to outplay those stronger than her.... and live action Mulan has magic powers that allow her to become super powerful and she's strong from the start of the movie. There's no growth in live action Mulan. She starts the movie strong and ends the movie super strong because reasons. Disappointing,,,

I whole scene with her father at the dinner table telling her to “know her place” was done ALL WRONG. In the REAL Milan movie her father always believed in her and loved her, but because he loved her, he feared society and their expectations. He was never mad at her when he said it in the REAL movie, he was just trying to protect her. It doesn’t make it right to say that but the point is he wasn’t insulting her or trying to demean her.

The part about Mulan having these qi powers that she has to hide honestly kind of reminds me of Frozen where Elsa is also taught to hide her ice powers. That scene where Mulan was like "No! You must conceal your qi!" made me laugh, like why are they trying to make her into Elsa? They're two completely different characters with different stories. Elsa grows to accept her powers and not fear them, which is a great message about forgiving yourself and accepting who you are and stuff. But this idea in Mulan doesn't work because she likes fighting and isn't afraid to use her qi, she only has to hide it because it's seen as a "manly" trait. It completely ruins the original message about how an ordinary girl works hard to get strong and protect who she loves. Her having powers undermines the entire concept of her working her ass off to achieve her goal - she is successful because she has special powers, she just had to let go of "society telling me I can't have qi" and boom she's the savior. I hate that they added that. Mulan is NOT supposed to be "special". That's the ENTIRE POINT.
