I Weighed My Peterbilt Cabover For The First Time...And I'm Shocked

In this video I weigh my Peterbilt 362 cabover. I have been waiting for over a year to finally put this truck on a scale! I believe this truck is a light weight truck, but I won't truly know until I take it to get weighed. Believe me, this one turned out to be quite a surprise. Knowing how much the truck weighs is essential before I start buying trailers and adding equipment. So come with me and take a ride - we'll have a great time.

If you get an aluminum trailer. Make sure it is in good condition. And get at least a case of a product called Gibbs and keep it sprayed down with the Gibbs so that the aluminum doesn't begin to corrode corrosion will kill aluminum. It degrades it quite quickly once it's attached to steal and in a humid environment. You may even want to put clear coat on certain elements that have a tendency to fail Fred and with gibbs, although it is a penetrating oil, you can wipe it down and spray paint on it and it will stick Did Gibbs will soak into a millionth of an inch and if the metal is clean without salt, salt will not penetrate it.

Nice tractor! Back before I drove for big brown, I was a firefighter EMT. Our area included part of the Indiana Toll Road. Got a call for an accident on the west bound side during a whiteout blizzard. Driver in a 2 story rear ended a tanker hauling either liquid oxygen or nitrogen. I forget that part. I just remember it was a potentially deadly hazmat situation. The other thing was the driver of the 2 story was sticking out of the front of his tractor. Pretty much imbedded. Legs, arms, steering wheel. It was an ugly scene. I don't remember if he survived. I do remember almost getting run over by cars and big trucks flying by in the hammer lane while we were trying to cut this guy out of his tractor... Whew!!! Memories... BTW My first assigned tractor at UPS was a 2 story POS International. Cummins and a 5-speed...I was instructed not to shift in the middle of a turn at an intersection cause the transmission linkage would jam and I'd be stuck in that gear... SMH

FWIW, a cab/chassis without an engine is 13k-ish. Add to that the fuel (8 lbs/gallon, 800 lbs/100 gals), the extra weight from the chassis extension (extra beam inside), and a road diesel (always 2k lbs or more), and, yeah, it sounds right.

No it is dry weight out the factory doors. You have build sheet from Peterbilt ? The COE has real steal components, aluminum VS plastics and alloys to lighten truck. Trailer depends on what you going to do. If flat or step bite the bullet go all aluminum.

When I used to drive an International 9700 with a dry van, empty weight was 10k steer, 10k drives, 10k tandems, and my bobtail alone used to weigh 15k, as did my trailer. So, your 10k steer is about right, but your drives are a bit heavier than my 9700 were, which is probably mostly on the double-frame extension.

Normally chassis weight is dry weight. Meaning all pieces no oil or fuel or antifreeze. Basically what the engine trans and all the pieces weigh before assembly. I think you’re going to be fine weight wise. Aluminum trailer would only put you at about 26,000 lbs then equipment maybe 27,000 you’ll still be able to do 52,000-53,000 lbs. Unless you’ve got a gig set up that you have to handle more than that.

0:30: A cabover hardly weighs a LOT less than a conventional. Between low-roof double sleepers, the only extra weight a conventional has is the weight of the front clip. EVERYTHING else is there on both, in roughly the same amounts. A high-roof model on either will weigh a bit more, but most of that extra height is fiberglass, so it's not a lot. A shorter wheelbase will make the C/o a bit lighter, but your has a frame every bit as long as a regular conventional has. Also, C/O's have heavier loading on the steer axle, so you have to be careful to not overload the steers.

Maybe skip the flatbed idea and look at tanker. Or do what I do and sign on with a company that just hauls new/used trailers from the factories and auctions to new owners. Cab overs have zero advantages. They have terrible fuel efficiency. They are really ugly and look like driving a refrigerator box down the road. They aren't required due to removal of lenth restictions. They are dangerous in a front end collision where the cab will flop forward and kill the driver (ask me I've cleaned up the brains off the highway). There's no significant weight advantage as the tonnage you can haul is usually controlled by the amount of axles on the trailer not anything to do with the truck. They are really strange to drive with the front wheel placement and make it very difficult in slippery conditions. And most carriers won't even contract with a cabover owner/opperator. Finally in my experience insurance carriers charge more for coverage. They are a relic of a past era where lenth restrictions forced truckers to run as short of a tractor as possible to maintain trailer length and haul capacity. If they had one positive trait they wouldn't all be on the boneyard and truckers would snap them up.

Carbon fiber would be great but it is also prohibitively expensive. Plus there’s the testing to get it certified by the government to use. The return on the investment would have to come from mass production of it afterwards and selling it.

@robertcooper6853 I really think carbon fiber frame rails could be extremely easy to make compared to these fancy car chassis. they would look like steel, and unless prohibited by law, I doubt it could be disallowed.

O-H-I-O Porter greetings 🇺🇸. Cabovers Rule! I’m a bit shocked on its weight. My brother had a 362 with a Cat & automatic. It was a bit heavier & then we added a toolbox at the rear of the frame. He had a combo trailer & an air ride van and we really had NO probs at all with what we hauled. I assume you have a Cummins? If you’re going for a used trailer I would go the combo route. I’m sure you will look any trailer over from top to bottom. I come from a trucking family & we’ve had a good variety of trucks over the years. Love the truck, my friend! Keep On Truckin! Surprise...Cabover Petes have always been heavy. Everyone I ran with that had them complained about how heavy thay were. I had a 74' IH 4070B Transtar ll, W/Detroit 8V-71T and a RT9513. Pulling a 81' Wilson 40' hopper bottom trailer. It weighed 24, 980 lbs. w/150 gals. of fuel on. We were local . We didn't need to carry more. A guy we ran with had a 75 Pete 352 single bunk w/350 Cummins also with the RT9513. Both with spring ride. I had spokes on the rear. He had steel disc on the rear. Both w/ aluminums on the front. Both had 22.5 fabric tires. He had the same model trailer as mine. Yet, His unit weighed 27, 560 lbs. He did have 160 gals. of fuel capacity, 10 more than me. We thought it was from the disc wheels. But, no matter what, That didn't add 2000 lbs. Nice to see young guys taking an interest in the cabovers. I spent most all of my carrer in them.

So back in the day when I was hauling Petro our all up empty weight goal was 25,000 for truck (3-axle) and pull trailer. We were still under "bridge formula". I had a 63 Pete needle nose all aluminum cab and hood kit on '53 Autocar aluminum frame rails. Single drive w tag axle on Page & Page aluminum walking beam suspension. 290 Cummins and 5 & 4 boxes. No front brakes. Aluminum front axle, semi center point, no power steering. No A/C. No sleeper. All aluminum wheels, etc. PTO pump for transfers. 24,945 fueled and tooled. So I could haul 51,000'ish in liquid cargo. You want light? Older cab over Freightliner narrow bunk, w aluminum frame and front axle. If 3-axle, no front brakes. And don't overpower the frame or it'll twist and crack. 350HP max. 6V92 is a good choice for a short light weight engine. RTO 910 and single drive good, unless off pavement work, then dual drive w posi in the rear rear. Light weight is not easy to get, but it pays off 😊
@nedstephens
@nedstephens 5 месяцев назад
I would have loved to take a ride in that needle nose. I'm not too worried about being real light right now, I was just so surprised at how heavy it ended up being. Had to eat my words from joking around with fellas in my shop. But if I do something real light wow you got the formula. I do get nervous with aluminum frames. Hopefully at that time I would find someone experienced like you to bounce stuff off. Thanks a bunch.
@brocluno01
@brocluno01 5 месяцев назад
Don't worry about the aluminum frame as long as you can find a good one w no cracks. My frame rails had lived one whole life as an Autocar, and then another under a Pete kit. Couple of things that help. When they bolt in the crossmembers, make sure they use thick chamfered washers against the aluminum, stainless if you can get them. And that Page & Page aluminum walking beam suspension really helps. Rough roads can crack things, but good riding rear suspension really helps. If air ride, go long bag. Taper leaf fron springs do too. Lastly keep the power reasonable. No need to be torqueing up the frame on every gear change. I'd be real happy with a 6V92 at 435 HP. They'll haul you over mountains OK, but they have a softer TQ curve down low so they don't hit the frame very hard 😊
