Lmao watching you struggle as a noob fly fisher is the best ...you actually did a whole lot better than I did ...hey Leo just some helpful tips for you in the future 1) 5 WT stands for 5 weight ....2) casting in tight areas with over hanging trees requires a roll cast ( D-loop) saves you from the aggravation of snagging on everything 3) when retrieving the line after you set the hook ....pull the line through your fingers that's holding the rod (easier) hope this helps -Tight Lines Brother 👍🏻

The reason the handle is so small is because you don't really need to use it. You want to reel the fish in by fighting it with the line and pulling it into a pile that would be in front of you.

I just subscribed today. And I thought I should mention why -- because I started watching fishing videos with 1Rod and the other "Googans" a few years ago. The heart of their videos was going to random rivers, ponds, lakes and creeks using a variety of different lures, rods and techniques. The MTB challenges were born during this time. It was fun to watch someone try and catch fish on something they haven't used. Now that 1Rod doesn't post anymore. The other "Googans" just post videos of them on boats, casting Senkos or jigs, and those videos have just begun to bore me. How many times can I watch someone catch a 2lb bass off a $50,000 boat using a Senko? And now that they all live in the same spot, if you subscribe to multiple members you get the same video from a different perspective 4 different times. In any event, I love your videos like this. I love watching people try new fishing equipment in new spots. I love the "challenge" videos. So keep up the good work!

Fly fishing is harder to learn then most techniques of fishing. But once you get the hang of it, all you have to do is read the water, then make a cast. Keep up the awesome content, Leo!
@justAfisherman1187
@justAfisherman1187 6 лет назад
if you have a lot of over hanging branches and no room for back cast you can try doing a "snap T" but keep your rod tip low like you are doing a side cast. The fly line and the fly stays low and its easier than a roll cast too just make sure the fly is not directly in front of you when you make that final cast. Good luck and hope to see more of your fun videos.
@dadragonfireoutdoors5642
@dadragonfireoutdoors5642 6 лет назад
There's a lot to learn, been doing it for about 2 1/2 years and I've only scratched the surface. It's all about technique. Word of advice, once you get the double haul cast down and go for distance, get a much better line. The taper of the line and leader makes the difference.
@summertime2433
@summertime2433 6 лет назад
That fly is called a hare's ear nymph and typically you want to fish it with a tiny spit shot under a strike indicator but sometimes a beadhead nymph is enough weight. Also if you're fishing a stream with no back casting space you want to learn how to roll cast. When nymph fishing small streams I only use a roll cast.

Glad to see you getting exited about multi-species angling with the fly!! Looks like KastKing nailed it with their beginner "catch all" kit, it is a perfectly simple option for anglers getting into fly fishing without any idea where to start. I love watching thoughtful creative anglers learn to fish with the fly in compromised situations. Your intuition and fishing IQ led you to solve problems on your own and bring up important topics often swept under the rug by the most "experienced" trout anglers. Excitement paired with exceptional multi-species versatility is only the beginning of what fly fishing will offer you in the years ahead. Looking forward to watching you fish some of your favorite spots with the fly, and lets not forget the new "whaaatts up youtubbbbee!!" fly fishing jump hahaha

Found the best way to learn casting a fly rod is in an open field or parking lot. Always tie a piece of yarn to the end of the tippet, so you don't snap it off. Nice to see you trying something new, and succeeding. Keep up the craft, it's a great thing to add to your arsenal of fish catching abilities.

My 1st time fly fishing was with a 5 weight outfit I bought from Cabelas in 2001. I spent 6 hours flogging the hell out of the water in our local trout management area while losing half a dozen or so flies to various trees & rocks. My leader was cut back so much from retying that I could barely get a good drift. But I did land one 8” stocked brown trout. Needless to say, I was thrilled! So I guess what I’m trying to convey is that you did incredibly well for your first time out. Welcome to the madness that is fly fishing. May the lord have mercy on your checking act!😜 Btw... Thing 1: Hare’s ear nymph Thing 2: Stonefly nymph Thing 3: Elk hair caddis Thing 4: Black wooly bugger Cheers!

Welcome to fly fishing! You can make some simple flies that will catch fish,out of foam,and feathers,which you could find locally. At walmart in the craft section,they have foam door knob sign sheets,which come in packs of multiple colors. If you take a standard 1/4" paper hole punch,and cut out 2 pieces,that is perfect to make a nice little popper on a #8 Aberdeen hook. The other day, I found sheets of thick, black, foam at Michael's art supply store, on vacation. It's best to get threads for fly tying online,or a fly fishing shop,and also you can find a cheap fly tying vice for like 15$ online as well. I pretty much only use flies that I tie,and I only make real simplistic flies. I take a 4 wt with me most the time,along with my conventional gear.

Leo, my man! Awesome video! The first fly you used (metal bead head) is called a Nymph. Think of it as a jig fly. You’re gonna love the name of the “big black thing.” It’s called a Wooly Bugger 😂 Every unweighted fly with a small hook will be a dry fly until it breaks the surface tension. They make waxes and oils to prolong this effect. But, back to the wooly bugger... if you like that fly, look into a lure called a Pistol Pete. Trust me, it’s a BIG producer for Trout and Green Sunfish.

Fun Video ! Fly fishing and fly tying is a whole new science and one of the most tranquil enjoyable ways of fishing . Chinese fly gear is inexpensive if you wait 30 days for delivery . Rod $20 , reel $10 , Line $10 , Flies $10 and extras $10-20 . Being in the middle of a river casting flies is like being one with nature , enjoy !

The reel is used to wind up your line or to fight bigger fish that pull drag, otherwise you "strip" the line between your fingers to pull in smaller fish. Also when choosing flies you must first observe what the fish are feeding on to catch them. Loved the video for sure!

Awesome! I always prefer fly fishing over spin casting... but I'll do whichever works best. For future reference, those flies looked like stone flies (first two), caddis fly (dry fly), and bugger (black one). The bugger is meant to be cast out and retrieved to imitate a baitfish.

The first fly was a bead head nymph. It is usually drifted through a pool while you watch and indicator and set the hook each time it pauses or moves to the side signaling a strike. The trick is to cast at such an angle to the flow that the nymph floats just above the bottom. Sometimes a small amount of weight is added or even a different dropper fly to give the fish a choice. If you don't snag bottom sometimes you may not be deep enough.

Grandfather was a fly fishing guide taught me as a kid awesome to see someone else pick up a fly rod... Remember to lock the wrist, elbow at a 45° angle, and the back cast is 1 o'clock forward to 10 o'clock.... Basic cast good for open areas, try to learn to roll cast its better for tight areas

You did very well for your first time! I've seen people who can't seem to learn as fast as you did even after professional instruction, lol. The flies that you were using (in order) are the hare's ear nymph, which is a mayfly nymph imitation; some sort of soft hackle (they are all very similar, this one looked like a stonefly imitation); an elk hair caddis, which imitates an adult caddisfly; and a black wooly bugger, which can imitate a variety of food sources depending on how you fish it (it can imitate a leech, large stonefly, hellgrammite, minnow, or even crayfish, depending on the colors you choose! Very versatile). You chose a great rod, 5wt is an excellent all-around choice. I agree that you should try a 3wt for some of the smaller species, as it provides a more finesse presentation. If you'd like, I'll be in the PA/NJ area from mid-May to early June, I can show you a few tricks for fly fishing.
@tonyjackson5115

I've been fly fishing for 18 years and I still get hung up in trees. I think the first fly you used was called a "hare's ear nymph" and the dry fly was an "elk hair caddis." the latter is a killer fly to use in the early summer evenings for trout.

I've only watched the first couple minutes and haven't read the comments yet but I have a few things to add. 1. It is much easier to learn how to fly cast with something more like a 3 weight, 7.5 ft, flyrod. It saves a lot of sore muscles and callouses! 2. Practice, with no fly or leader, on the nearest available patch of grass whenever you can. You will quickly gain skill and accuracy and avoid those sore muscles and callouses while actually fishing! 3. Spend the couple bucks for tapered leaders. They make presenting a #24 dry fly as easy as dangling corn from a cane pole. 4. The easiest way to learn to catch fish on a dry fly is during a hatch. The great thing is that most hatches on most bodies of water, especially small streams, can be matched with two flies. "Black gnats" and "ginger quills". The black gnats will approximate any black or grey insect and the ginger quills will take care of most light colored insects, from midges to mayflies. On a related note: If your flies look right but you aren't getting strikes? Try going to a smaller size before anything else. I think fish are more put off by too large a dry fly more then the wrong pattern or color. I have many patterns from #24 to#10 but if I needed two flies for survival fishing they would be #16 and #18 ginger quills. If I thought I needed something darker I would just take a pen to it. 5. The easiest way to learn to catch fish on a artificial nymph or "dead drift" wet fly is with live bait! I learned to fish nymphs for trout using live caddis fly larvae on a #20 hook. Once you learn to get the drift technique right you move on to artificial nymphs but on those days I know there's a nice brown trout right there and I can't get a strike? I tie on the #20, flip over a rock for bait, and go get my fish. Cheers!

I realize this is a year old, hope you kept it up. I'm narrowing down things to what o think is the most important in the video. The reel, you don't really use it unless you are on a big fish. Besides the casting (which will get better), make sure after every cast to place the fly line under your index finger or middle finger. Between your finger and the cork. Immediately after every cast...then work the fly in short or long strokes with the other hand depending on the situation. But rule #1, hold the fly line down with the index finger. Even when you get a fish, work it in with the other hand. The reel is only to store line or on really big fish. You will know or learn quickly when to get the fish on the reel. If you need to give the fish a little line, simply lift your finger slightly while maintaining the line in the other hand.

I tend fish a lot of small creeks in Montana and Virginia and I keep a tight roll cast most of the time, even for large fish on the Missouri. I would suggest you to practice some roll casts especially if you plan to cast in some more creeks.

Also if you are looking to get flies can’t go wrong with fly shack flies they are cheap and good quality. Try Adams and sulfur’s for dry flies and beaded hares ear nymph and green weenies.
