Oh absolutely. The regularity with which they would read or listen to scripture is so impressive. She likely had a plethora of passages memorised and at hand to comfort her in any situation. It's so funny when people tell me 'but she doesn't talk about praying in her novels!' because I think we often don't realise how much she would have taken for granted that people prayed all the time. And when someone is doing something religiously unorthodox, like when Mr. Eliot in Persuasion engages in 'Sunday travelling' (meaning likely skipping church as well) it's met with criticism and suspicion.

Yes that's an excellent topic to be discussed. My understanding is that there would have been debate in the Anglican church even then about this, and that even those who believed in the Real Presence would still not have openly acknowledged believing in transubstantation (rather, only in consubstantiation). So, not quite the same view as RC teaching for sure, although overall communion would still have been taken more 'seriously' than by some Anglicans now. The Anglican Church is a real mixture of opinions in our times, but I think it would have been a bit more homogenous back then.

@@beatrixscudelerYes, TS Eliot was outraged, as an (Anglo-Catholic) Anglican, that Emily Hale, a Unitarian, took Communion at an Anglo-Catholic parish in Boston.
