Love this! I was so spiritually impacted by Emma and I found that experience somewhat surprising, but also a pleasant surprise. This is really interesting about this text. Thank you so much for sharing!

You've inspired me to download the Companion to the Altar and bring it into my own devotional life. I'll miss Jane Austen content!! I love your channel.

Do! It's great! Have you read Austen's prayers? I use them in my devotional life and they are quite wonderful.

Per your suggestion, I went to the Internet Archive and downloaded a copy of a later edition of the "Companion". It does add a deeper insight into Austen's inner life. An understanding of earlier forms of Anglicanism, and the later development of Anglo Catholicism, are central to understanding English literature. Similarly, the Roman Catholic Church has understood this, in the spiritual and theological aspect, with the 1980 allowance for an Anglican Rite Usage within the Latin Rite, and the acceptance of married, ordained Anglican and Episcopal priests as fully ordained Roman Catholic priests, and the admittance of Anglican parishes, as full Roman Catholic parishes under an Anglican Usage. The very rich influence of 19th & 20th century literary Anglican converts starting with Newman, and including Robert Hugh Benson, Ronald Knox, Chesterton, Maurice Baring, Evelyn Waugh, Graham Greene etc., cannot be grasped without reference to their Anglicanism. I'll be interested in your insights on Dorothy Sayers, and she can't be understood outside of her Anglicanism.

Yes, all excellent points. It's truly fascinating to me how the great writers of English literature maintained connections to England's Catholic past in all kinds of ways. Although I will not specifically address her Anglicanism, my next long form video will actually be on Dorothy Sayers! Just an introduction to a novel of hers that I particularly like for now, and I am definitely intending to then address her Anglican faith in future videos. She's become such a favourite of mine! You may enjoy reading Tim Larsen's piece on Peter Wimsey that just came out on Current today by the way...

Wonderful video! I subbed b/c of your Jane Austen content but I stayed for you 😅 My background is Illustration so I know nothing of this literary world you speak of. I love it. You’re a fantastic teacher. And now I have books to buy 😂

That is so kind! There will be more Austen content, but it's fun to branch out! That is so cool about your illustration background, I know very little about it but love learning about illustrations of my favourite books!

I suppose there's a temptation to assume that Austen was identical to today's "cultural Christian"-going through the motions to keep up a good front, as good gentry and vicar's daughter. I'm pleased evidence is there, from close and open minded reading of her work and biographically, that her faith life did animate her writing. I don't know much of Sayers, except from watching a few BBC/ITV adaptions that came to US television in the past. That will be interesting....

I am very disappointed in your dipping into the Anglican church. I would have preferred that a Catholic would go to a Catholic retreat. There are Catholics in England. The Anglican communion is not the body blood soul and divinity of our Lord.

I obviously have my opinions about various Christian denominations. I mainly went on this retreat to see the Anglican perspective on Jane Austen as I am personally not so well acquainted with the history of the Anglican Church, which she belonged to.

@@beatrixscudeler I have never been Anglican and I know a great deal about that church here in the United States they call it Episcopalian but they have their roots in the Anglican church in Britain. The Catholic Church is not a denomination. It’s the true church. I know we are going through much pain but the real Catholic Church is still there.

@@donna6895 I completely get where you're coming from. I also think it's interesting to learn how different Churches evolved over time and how their particular practices influenced writers.

Defending you here Beatrix, because you have really led me into more serious considerations about Jane Austen (favourite author bar none if I had to choose). I know perfectly well that you, yourself, know exactly the difference between Catholic Communion, and Anglican Communion. Jane herself is unlikely to have come across Catholics. You are about to talk to us about TSEliot, himself an Anglican, but one with the most wonderful insights into the Spiritual Life. Let’s see what we can learn from other denominations. We don’t have exclusive rights to the Divine Life.

@@doctorjenny thank you for your comment! I think it's great to learn about and from other denominations, even if ultimately we know where our own home is!
