@@marcello9476 Dude, American food: Burgers, french fries, macaroni and cheese, chicken nuggets, corn dogs... Our entire food culture is made up of stuff we like putting ketchup on. There's a reason this stuff is always on the kids' section of restaurant menus you know.
@@jonatanluna1061 Yall need to get out more. There are a LOT of diverse food cultures all throughout the US, not just this generic stuff you guys are listing.
😂 I honestly hate sushi with cream cheese it's so weird. But I can imagine my dad would have loved the philly roll. It's basically a cross between bagels and lox with sushi.
@@KingNast Thing is, I think they were being serious, especially about the Philly Roll. Cheese is becoming more and more popular in Japan and Korea, especially among young people (hence why he kept saying kids would love it). Cheese has become so trendy, they are putting it in all kinds of crazy things now. Not to mention, that restaurant is right next to the American base in Okinawa, the owner is probably thinking it will sell extremely well to both young people and Americans stationed close by. And he's probably right.
@@hippiemuslim nope. No Japanese person would be direct and sassy they don't like it. You'll need to listen for context cues. This is mainly for Americans who can't handle real sushi or for kids
that was hilarious to watch and to hear their funny comments about Americans and how we eat sushi. Great job. I will recommend my military friends to head over there for some American style sushi
I've had a few friends from Japan who told me that they like American style sushi better than sushi back home. One even said she never really went out for sushi in Japan because she disliked it so much, but frequently went for sushi in America. Japanese cuisine is heavily about bringing out the natural flavors of key ingredients, while American cuisine is about the ensemble -- the flavor that can only be created by combining the ingredients together. That said, we *do* love our sauces.
That love of sauce most of our cuisine shows is totally a french thing we adopted after buying lousiana. Both the french and us americans do love our sauces and reductions
ensemble? American cuisine is about a clash of flavours, over-seasoning and meals unfit for performing any kind of task afterwards. If you want an ensemble of flavours and textures, study classical french cooking. Or modern spanish high end gastronomy for example
Much of Japanese food culture was inspired by other countries traditions, taken to Japan and remade into what suits the Japanese pallet. Japanese curry (India, The Uk) tempura (Portugal) Ramen (China) and so on. It is only natural for the Japanese to se their own food culture be changed and return to Japan. Many people don’t know this part of Japanese history.
D D Wow, your comment is very negative. Just because people do not see the world like you do, does not mean that their view of the world is wrong and yours is correct. To think that, is quite ignorant and childish and this mindset is the cause of many wars. The Japanese do not act as individuals as we do in the west, they are part of a unit, they go out of their way not to create friction within the group. This is not two faced in Japan it’s called respect.
The Japanese as a whole are a very polite people. If he just stopped random people walking by to try it, I don't think he would have gotten anything but that they like it even if they didn't. In this setting, I believe these gentlemen were being completely honest. It isn't being two faced, its politeness and being gracious of hospitality.
That was hilarious! We all like to try new recipes, right? You also probably increased the profits of the place by bringing in more customers with the new recipes, great job!
I'm not sure but I think Sushi was appropriated to have rice on the outside so Americans can have a familiar texture on the outside. Back when sushi started to pop in America, the people would see the Seaweed as an unappetizing feeling in the mouth. I don't know if this is true or if I remember it correctly but it makes sense.
@@boost3188 funnily enough I hated sushi for a long time because I had traditional nori sushi for my first time and couldn't handle the seaweed. I've gotten over it now that I'm much older but the first time I had "american" sushi I was like oh fuck yeah this is amazing, no wonder everyone likes sushi.
I prefer sashimi, nigiri and norimaki. I'll eat the rice outside style occasionally, as long as it's not covered in sauce but I prefer to taste the fish, seaweed and rice. I guess I'm not your average American.
I have been watching you tube a few years now I can't remember how I found this channel but I can say the food prepared by taku is some of the best food I have seen on you tube. I sure wish I could taste that sushi.
So cool to see how even with how serious Japanese Sushi Chefs take their craft they really wanted to see them have fun and really want to understand american style sushi. What a great Opportunity for you, love watching your content keep it up!
This one makes me smile from ear to ear. I wonder, did you explain to them that Americans have adopted the bagels and lox with cream cheese from Jewish diaspora and that's part of the reason why they like the Philly roll and that the brand name that's most popular for the cream cheese is called Philadelphia? I'm rooting for you making YT your full time job; it just seems to make you and Jocelyn so happy.
Dang you need to advertise this second channel more on your main channel! I thought I religiously watch you, but I had no idea you had a second channel. But I dont think Ive ever subbed to a channel so fast when I realized.
We only mentioned it twice. :) We're planning to mention it more when episodes relate to OCL. i.e we've had people ask us to go into specifics on all our camping gear but that doesn't quite fit OCL/will make the video too long, so we're planning to do a video on that with this channel.
Fun to watch and I learned some new techniques like wrapping the roll with some plastic wrap to keep things from falling apart . Gonna try some of these at home for myself for sure.
Let’s not forget why something like the California roll was invented. It was for Japanese immigrants chefs to provide palatable food for Western Americans and make a living for themselves. Now, because of these rolls, Americans have learned a lot and enjoy quality sashimi like the Japanese.
It's true: easing the American palate into the flavors of raw fish for a country that is 90% landlocked was important as a gateway to more typical sushi
This might be my favorite video. I loved the expressions in their faces when trying the American style rolls. I personally lean more towards traditional style sushi, eating mostly sushi and sashimi, but I'm craving for a philli roll right now! Love it!
Hey Taku! been watching for about 8 months, I don't even fish. I just love your enthusiam and energy into what u love. I have watched you filet 100's of fish without ever even doing it myself. Your videos are steadily getting better every time. I let my 5 year old watch with me ,at night before we go to bed, and she happens to love you too. Maybe we can come see you at your restaurant, or catch some fish with you! I hope everything goes well regardless. - NickR from FL
That was so cool to watch! Really fun to see the reaction to the American style and watching them debate what to put on their menu. I love watching people share their cultural differences with each other.
I came from your original OCL channel and I was already a fan now with the addition of this channel I think I'm a Stan now lol. Love the Japanese chefs reaction to the American style rolls. Adventure, travels, good food, and great vibes are what makes your content so much fun to watch! Keep up the good work you two!
Really cool. Nice to see a genuine interest in what their customers want. It’s also important to keep and honor their heritage. I can see their internal struggle lol
this was a really good video, could use a bit more subtitling but for a sub channel its good enough. looking forward to seeing more! great job taku and jocelyn!
Great video, i'm liking the the second channel so far. Taku would make a pretty good restauraunt consultant. Expirience working in restaurunts, speaks english and japenese fluently, knows both cultures, etc.
"Hey, if it tastes good... eat it" 😉. Btw, you are the one that got me into sashimi and sushi, i now have a container with all the ingredients, utensils etc that i take on offshore trips. 🙏
Ha! Very enjoyable & entertaining watching one of Your older videos -->Taku has gone from teaching Japanese sushi Chefs how to make 'American Sushi' to currently building/oufitting his "first" home/recreational van vehicle & learning excellent technique in real time as He goes! ie van is looking really good w/well built interior living space. Taku, You truly are a 'Renaissance Man' & inspiration :-)
I like how humble and modest you (and Jocelyn) are. You have knowledge, but you think it's not valuable. It's a nice personality trait and it's even better to see you having much success. PS: put a ring on that J finger!
