I always look for those moments when Matt suddenly goes into "I'm on camera and need to say something spontaneous" mode and Tom sees that happen and isn't sure what's about to come out of Matt's mouth so he just smiles. Priceless.
And i always wondered where you got all your tearing apart and putting back together skills. Now everything makes sense, the kind of life you had so far amazes me, you had my respect with your problem solving skills on a rescue. But now i respect you even more with that derby background. I think all motorsports brings people and families together like that because my whole entire family is the same way just with drag racing and we have alot of friends that their families are the same way and I've seen circle track racers families and friends be the same way and in my family my dad tried circle track racing once or twice and his uncle used to race circle track racing alot and my Dad and his brothers and all their uncles grew up racing go karts then they all went to drag racing and everyone in my family races cars on the drag strip except one of my uncles he races motorcycles so me and my cousins all grew up at the drag strip living their all weekend every weekend of our childhood and into our adult hood and truth be told that is where most of us got our first driving lessons was backing the car off the trailer and driving it around the pit area over to the tech lines and at the end of the day drive it back on the trailer and it doesn't sound like it could be that hard but it is because you have people going way faster in the pits than what they should be going to try to get to the staging lanes to make a pass and you are trying to drive to tech and warm the car up and everything else and they don't care just like on the roads they will run over top of you in a heartbeat and then try to blame it on you and what makes it harder is no race car has a mirror to see around the car at all so you have to keep your head on a swivel at all times
Sadly prophetic, that be, in retrospect..... A sad reminder of how much we miss Lizzie. She should at least make regular guest appearances.... Just my opinion and tho I'm usually wrong I'm pretty sure I'm right on this one.
I remember clear as day about 10 years ago at the eagle mountain derby, when all the other trucks were unable to go into the last round a concrete barrier was put in the middle of the arena. You went top speed, jumped, and flipped your truck. What an amazing memory I have kept with me through the years.
You mentioned that you and Paul once ran a derby in Morris, New York. In the early 1960's my girl friend's brother-in-law, his brother and I used to race every Sunday afternoon on that track. It was a half mile dirt at that time. We took turns driving and a couple of very successful seasons. What a blast. I was 19 and 20 years old then, now I'm 80. Wish I could still do it.

Because I’ve been watching Paul, I now realize that there is a real science to building a proper Derby Car! This comes from a professional Race Car fabricator with over 40 years experience in building many different types of cars. I should not be surprised, however I am very impressed with all that goes into the building of one of these cars! Quite ingenious builds!
I really like how Kaulin (cool spelling) always wears his welding gear, helmet and safety glasses...and safety gear....all the time...to protect his future in the industry...and keep his mom happy.
@@bushratbeachbum Yup. Matt is a great and fun guy along with all the guys and gals on the channel. PPE is cheap and can actually be stylish. We all cheat...I even wear Crocs while running equipment.
Im sure he is extra cautious about his safety and health after he went through such terrible leg injury as a young kid. Im not sure of the details exactly but he almost lost his leg and he still has a slight limp from it.
Midwestern Americans are the kindest people I have ever met. I'm from Australia and that level of kindness and almost an innocence simply does not exist here.

Nice drill TOMTOM.. back in 2015 when the knife making industry blew up ( thanks to forged in fire) I built one of those using a 1.5 HP Dayton motor I had laying around.. I ordered a Chinese variable frequency drive from eBay and also got a heavy duty Chuck from McMaster Car .. the square tubing I had left over from building 2 x 72 inch belt grinder... built it for less than 300 bucks!! U can too. U can add a lot of accessories to that motor shaft. When COVID hit I sold it ... the guy still has and loves it ❤🎉🎉

Haven't seen Ed in a long time. I thought he had passed away and no one said anything. Glad he's still kicking rocks. Maybe you can do a featurette on him in the future.
He fell a month or two ago , on what I think was while out on a gold excursion. The fall injured his neck. I presume he’s still recovering from that injury is why he’s still got the brace. Remember it takes a long time to heal when your that old.
I laughed so hard at the more floor space! I relate to that so much, having owned a machine shop and having employees excited about new equipment, and my mixed emotions as a boss. Just perfect 😂

One of my fondest memories is that of my uncle in the demolition derbies. Later on, my buddy and I made one as well. I had no idea how much fun it was, nor how much work, but we did it. It is great to see the build here and on the other channels.

The "nugget" that Jeffe was disparaging is called a "picker". It's big enough to be picked up with your thumb and forefinger. I have found a few "pickers" in my relatively few days as a prospector in Arizona. Most are worth around $50 or up to $75. Even though they are small, they are still fun to find and worth the effort.

I tried my first Poutine in Montreal about 20 years ago. It was fantastic. Crispy fries, gooey cheesy goodness, and that pepper gravy! A great cold late night treat in a Montreal Winter.

We used to have a similar type of heater in the UK in the 70/80s called a Salamander evil things and people would have them in the workshops, they caused many to burn down as they were quite uncontrollable.

Oh the memories! My late husband drove demolition derby cars in the county fairs and derby nights all summer into fall for years. The 3 oldest kids drove too. He had muscular dystrophy but it didn’t stop him. He gave us a few pretty scary moments mainly due to his disability causing mobility issues in getting in & especially out of the cars. But he sure did love it. This brought back a ton of memories.
Nah, it's *gasoline* to wash your hands. The brake cleaner is used to clean your guns. 😋 Plus, awesome "rocket stove". Very artistic, and a good way to heat an area. We have a rather smaller one we take camping, kind of a fully controlled fire pit. Toasty!
Would like to see some complete Derby vids from "back in the day".... Never been into em much but if they make Matt and family this happy i fear i may have been missing out. I've even owned a lot of daily drivers that would have qualified with very few modifications..... The good old/bad old days of working long hours for short pay and just dreamin about cool rides.

I saw Matt in the JUNKY derby car in Morris, NY! Drove upstate from NYC for the Otsego County Fair with some friends and had a blast! Junky was our favorite and didn't know anything about Matt at that time.
