taco meat I guess it’s not the same anymore because the first gen IS was basically a rebadged Altezza with a more luxurious interior and it was really good for what it is as an affordable sports sedan Everything changed after that but the IS F is really good bested the C63 and M3 Hopefully the new IS is more engaging to drive and maybe an IS F could return
I liked the rear of the previous IS a lot more than this one... In this design they are trying to make a combination of the ES and The UX in one car, which from my point of view is not that good. I dislike this rear.
I think tour front end redo was spot on. The spectacular thing about the refreshed IS is that it almost perfectly toes the line of restraint and overstyled. I think the Lexus Spindle design language is really starting to come into its own. Cars like the IS, RC, LS, and LC are striking. Older models like the NX and RX are really gonna benefit from a redesign with the current softer yet still striking lines.
I was scared to hear you redesign the car because it was beautiful to start with...but then you proved your years of experience. It even looks more like an LC500 sedan
@@Big.W. Family resemblance between the luxury mark and the parent company isn't supposed to exist. Family resemblance within the company, yes. The fact this is basically the same tired platform from like 2006 along with giving it "Toyota" headlights is very disappointing. The fine details and lines of the exterior are a stylistic mess but it does look more cohesive than the last gen. Interior looks last gen, because it is. Overall this is going to cost Lexus some sales, and they know that, but they don't care. They just killed the GS and the IS isn't their bread and butter. Toyota is low effort now, hence why no new exciting engines or platforms are arriving, no investment in anything original or different of their own, sharing and using others for design (Subaru, Mazda, BMW). Yeah, they lost their soul.
in my opinion, this original back end design is just perfect, the Z line moves down a little at the tail make the car looks much muscular and wider than the signature line. like a "widebody kit".
I’m really glad Lexus just updated these multi-spoke wheels from the current model. They are nicer but it’s gonna take a while to clean now than usual.
Totally agree with the design analogy. Failed in the side profile lines, disconnection and not flowing before meets the taillight. Sedan won’t sell anyway, they might as well put efforts in making performance suvs.
Wow. That’s amazing. Lexus should hire you!! You pointed out things that really made the lines and flow better. I wanted to include a pic of my 2nd gen here because I wanted your opinion on the door lines, I think they are better than on this reinvention. Also interesting that this model goes back to 2nd gen straight taillight versus that 3rd gen drip look. I’m sure you are aware of this but for anyone who may not know Lexus does put their L shape into many aspects of the car, it’s almost subliminal until you see it! On the second gen it’s the convergence of the rear door and rear windshield/roof. Finally I love how the IS looks like a stretched out coupe, it’s a beaut!! Looks like a car 10x it’s price.
I don't know if I mind the "Bangle butt", but I feel like the rear tail-lights are a bit...droopy? I think they sit too low on the body, and maybe they curve downwards a bit... Love the front end though, actually prefer the original to the redesign here. Lexus did a great job of "evolution over revolution". It even gives me big RC-F vibes.
@BEST Fun-er fact: The inspiration for that Adrian sketch was the 1999 Z9 Concept Car by Chris Bangle - so the idea was in fact, Chris Bangle. It also has iDrive and the sharkfin antenna that are still used today.
@@Marrrrtin yes. When asked in 2006 what his response is to the criticism about bangle butt, bangle replied: "they will understand it one day". 14 years later everyone is copying it now.
At the end of each design you should show the original car with the manufactured design in a side by side view with your complete redesign so we can accurately compare your design to the original.
Lexus (like Toyota) is refining his overstyle to a point that, ever its still a bit overstyled, looks great. And this IS is a very clear example of what im talking about. Loving It even It has some weird details (I was expecting you to talk about that tiny cut in the headlights). Great video!!!
Ifiniti added apple carplay to their dinosaur Q50..... I can not for the life of me upgrade my 2014 for the current car. Acura now Lexus have shown the new sedans. Infiniti is next.
It almost seems like Lexus wanted to give a “wide body” look to the rear to emphasize the haunches of the car. I agree, though, that it made the rear side a little messy and confusing. I do especially like what you did with the headlight area and the lower strip. The result was much more dramatic.
Just a thought: I'd rather have an RC but like bits of both 'old' and 'new' RC. Would you care to design an RC based on the new IS? I think your typical design language fits Lexus perfectly and it would make the RC an absolute winner.
Remarkable. You have a very creative streak on beautifying some that I thought was already perfect. Well done. I will be watching more of your programs. Cheers
I think If you go for the non f sport package the car looks better. At least from the front. Lexus has 2 pictures of a darker gray model on their website that looks FAR better imo, and addresses the front bumper design issues
Please redesign the MINI Coupe! I think if they had made a nice little coupe rather than just replace the roof of the MINI Cooper. I’d also love to see a muscle car designed like a cyber truck!
When your buying a 300 or 350is or a Lexus in general you are paying for the beat reliability compared to other competitors all though it lacks on power but the interior is spectacular.
So, you are making its front end look more like a Veloster. It's definitely an improvement. I am not a fan at all of Toyota's/Lexus' "all over the place" over-styling of its cars. The styling usually makes no sense at all.
That side line you talked about in first sketch actually lines up with the second line you did on the front part of it. XD the line below the headlight
The second line above the rear wheel gives muscle at that height, does not give the same effect higher and deeper. Continuing one line from front to back alone gives an ordinary design, the only thing it lacks is strength in the lower front and that is missing from the previous model.
Honestly I like the original design the new IS more, even the not matching shoulder lines, the idea of those shoulders I think is to give it more visual power like they are different parts of body, and this is a Japanese car and it doesn’t have to be Mercedes or Volvo or Tesla
I just discovered you from this post. DAMN! I use Revit and SketchUp to design buildings, but others I work with use Photoshop and Lumion to work magic. I envy your skills! I was thrilled to watch you work, and since the first day I laid eyes on this new Lexus IS, I couldn't stop looking - out of discomfort - at the front lower fascia, the swoopy door scoops and linework over the rear wheel arch and the Chris Bangle trunk with droopy tail lights. In my opinion, these are all incorrectly proportioned and rendered. Toyota/Lexus' drive to put more emotion into their designs has me feeling uneasy with all the swoops, incongruous lines and melted plastic in a wind tunnel aesthetic. See the current Toyota Avalon's front grill... it's so wrong! So, I like what you did with the front of the IS, as I always feel that vehicles with missing colored bodywork along the front makes the front look fragile and improperly structurally disconnected. Also, you addressed the linework around the "vents" below the headlights (usually fake) and the same items on my 2015 Lexus GS 350 F-Sport are horrible! They flare outward and have no justifying air dam/splitter or body color at the bottom to visually "finish" the design. In your redesign of the trunk of the IS I wish you had addressed something I think too many luxury car designers do - make droopy butts! Mercedes, Audi and BMW are famous for cars with shoulder lines which go down at the tail end, with taillights low on the rear end. Raising the taillight bar on the IS would help reduce the Bangle Butt problem of the IS trunk lid and help properly fill in the sheetmetal below the lip spoiler, giving it more of a wedge shape like a 4-door coupe or hatchback. OK I'll shut up now. Very glad to discover you!
It is only a very minor to compare with changing to a more powerful engine. The best choice should be just add a low pressure turbo, creating just less 400 hp.
Have to say I really like the re-design. For me its more grownup styling. Maybe evolution not revolution...? Anyway can't wait to see it live to get better perspective on all those angles and lines. Btw, have You done LS?
One of the best lines of the outgoing model was the line that went from the sills and up to the tail lights. They ditched it and the rear door looks really tortured.
Absolutely agree with you on this - while I love the new IS design, there is too much going on at the rear. The odd and awkward articulation of the boot/trunk shape reminds me a bit of the E65 7 Series, which was a real dogs dinner of a car styling wise. I think your adjustments to the IS are a huge improvement :)
I personally do not like the re-design that Lexus did for 2021. I loved the 2014 face pre face lift they did, but the way you did the front end almost made me want to trade in my Q50 red sport for this car haha. What do you think of the Q50 and new TLX’s?
Interesting, the front changes has made it look like my current 2015 IS F sport, with the break in the grilled by the white lip that ges across. Your side changes improves it but the rear you created is not as good as what it is now..
I like what you did to the shoulder line and i even like what you did to the duck tail spoiler in the profile. I actually like the ducktail from the rear as is. I definitely agree about the lip in front but I was ok with the grille shape overall. But I feel al the changes you made were great and it add just that extra bit of sparkle that the car needs.
If they were gonna do a heavy refresh and keep it for a while why did they not change a bit more of the interior too, especially when it looks so outdated. I shall never understand.
I think you’ve missed the point of the redesign, these elements especially the duck tail is meant to look like it’s sitting on top, it’s clearly on purpose a bit like the Supra
