The Mavrik Pro is the BEST IRONS I have ever hit. It's gorgeous! It feels SO good and it goes straight and FAR . I would gladly spend $2000 for these irons.
The title of your video is ridiculous. I WOULD NOT BUY THESE IRONS...Your only objection is the name - seems like you really liked them. Is the name Mavrik Pro really a reason to make a video telling people not to buy them? I bought them last year and I love them.
@@JamesRobinsonGolf Lol, no it's cool. But not everybody is looking to play irons with distances from the 2000's anymore. These irons are designed to give more distance and forgiveness for mid to high handicappers. They weren't designed for your average "club pro," who's playing the latest blades anyways. But saying that people wouldn't by them is a little harsh, seeing as a lot of people have gone out and bought these irons this year. And the consensus is that they're amazing. But you have the RU-vid channel, so who am I to disagree? Carry on. :)
Just bought a full set of callaway mavriks, feel great a sounds good too, be in my bag alot longer than a year.. Ohh and I'm already 6 shots down after 2 rounds with em. Happy days 🍻
Why didn't he have one of his students hit these to see if the Max would help an average golfer. Just because he won't play them does not mean they won't help. But of course if they are truly game improvements he would lose $ by not giving lessons.
I purchased the standard Mavrik irons last year, first shot with the 7 went 193, could not believe it. I'm 52 and my handicap was cut in half with the Mav's, from 15 to around 7. I had Pings for the previous 7 years, 7 iron was lucky to go 155. Hit the 5 iron easily 210, being out of shape as well. I highly recommend these irons for improving your game and for the feel. The technology is amazing, the ball explodes off the face. Love Love Love these clubs. Well done Callaway. I tried the SIM and M5 irons and these blow em away.
Hi James they look they look a good set of irons but I get fed up with all the signs that Calloway and tailor-made churn clubs like tomorrow can’t deal with plastic back on irons they look too cheap from the back over time they get too grubby and they and a pain in the arse to clean For me Titelist make better clubs that are easy to clean but you will pay a premium and they will last longer or even set Blades
I've watched alot of your videos and honestly have been less than impressed with your reviews. You put WAAY too much value on your own personal subjective and insignificant factors, such as the name of the club, or whether they include the words 'pro' or 'tour'. This is golf and that's the game manufacturers have played since the birth of the game. I personally could care less that the irons have the same name as the driver line that Callaway has released. I definitely don't care what you think about the looks, although I don't have an issue if you say a club looks great to you. Anyway, I'm interested in performance. Period. If you'd focus on performance only, I'd take your reviews more seriously.
The only reason I would not buy them is that I got the previous year 790P irons only 7 months back. If the performance is not overly performing what I have, then I don't see a reason to change.
I have the Mavrik predecessors, Rogue pro irons. I had my heart set on Mizuno’s at the time (approx, 3 or 4 years ago), and I couldn’t hit them close to how well I hit the rogue pro’s. I’m a mid handicapper and yes they are on the smaller side as far as size goes, on my day I still hit them well. I would buy the Mavrik pro irons without hesitation.
complete nonsense, I went to buy i210 from ping, the mavrik went 25 yards further and straighter, they are ugly but go real well. I went with the idea of buying Ping and left with Callaway
Standard, Pro, or Max Mavrik irons? I just bought the 5-PW standard Mavrik irons. Got fitted for +1/2inch 1 degree upright. Now I gotta figure out my new wedge set up!
Viktor oh they really are! Compared to the Apex Pros, which I tested later just for fun, I couldn’t really tell that much difference. Of course if you are a scratch player or better, you’d definetely feel the difference. For me though, the Mavrik Pros are everything I need
I’m a 7 hcp and was just fit for the Mavrik Pro’s with KBS $-Taper shafts. This is my first set of Callaway’s and after 4 rounds I love them, more forgiving than my previous players irons and still look great! I personally don’t care what the manufacturer calls them as long as they help lower my scores.
1 - Great video, 2 - bought these prior to watching, (maybe would have swayed my decision a bit) but overall I’m super happy with the purchase. I shoot mid to high 80s, with 27 year old irons. First time out was a complete disaster trying to play like I would with old irons, second round I made a couple adjustments and shot much better than my first round with them but still 10+ my average due to missing left or right pretty bad. Third round however, (plus 3 trips to driving range) something clicked. Leave it to me to 3 putt 10 holes.... but wound up 4+ my average score. Can’t wait for the rest of this season and many more to come with this set of irons! C - I would recommend to anyone looking for a clean feel on impact and anyone looking to see a ball jump when you know you hit it well. Cheers everyone, stay safe and hit em straight!
Who cares what they’re called James? If they’re good clubs, then people should buy them and keep using them as long as they want. And if they update the driver before the irons, it’s no problem if it has a different name. Look in your own bag: Mizuno irons, TM SIM driver (or is it a Cobra Speedzone?), Callaway Epic Flash 3 wood .... who cares?
I think it’s because most companies really market the drivers, and when casual golfers go to pick one up they see the matching irons and see how far they go with the lofts and buy them as well
Hey James never mind Titleist being good keeping the names away from the driver name, what about Mizuno the new st200 driver is great but the irons are Mp20s Mmc hmb not st200 irons come on give Mizuno a shout out. Yes a bit of favouritism because I use hmbs but they are Majestic irons.
I went and got fitted. I absolutely was not even thinking about the sim os. These get a lot of hate but they worked best for me. It came down to the sim os or Maverik max.
James wouldn’t buy THESE irons.......UNLESS they stamped Titleist across the top. Then they could call them anything and he’d be hawking them even if they were bigger than snow shovels.
You sound like a Mavrik. Most people know James would call a spade a chunky Spade. I'm sure you like a place to go where the topics offered that are not always straightforward typical club reviews. Titleist is like Wendy's, you can get a single, double or triple. I think that's his point on naming conventions. Some going to the extreme (Callaway pun intended)
I kinda feel like a jerk disliking this video bc I love all your content but for me it's pretty clear the "Pro" and the "Tour" and things like "High Spin" wedges and even bringing out new irons every year with a driver are all marketing techniques that work in golf. I mean, you came around towards the end of the video touching on these things but then it felt like the title of the video was click bait -ish when you titled it "I would not buy these irons and not sure you would either" which is totally not something I expected bc your content is dope. With a title like that I was expecting some no name iron company with some interesting quirks or something along those lines but instead I got this. Just my 2 cents, sorry.
If they came out with an Emoji Driver with a big smile 😊 on the bottom and a different one on the back of each iron, people would still buy them. Well now I want a complete set...but in the tour pro version
Got fitted and was brand agnostic, I ended up in the epic sub zero driver... Needless to say I hate the name and color but it works and that is all I care about.
callaway make replicas for retail..so callaway isnt really a name .well it is a name..but a shit one www.tourspecgolf.com/callaway-apex-mb-tour-version-irons-by-miura-4-pw.html
james i just want to say that there is some1 at my work and when were stood in our little changing room in the morning before we go into the work area he always says lets do it and every time i think of you and the lets do it now. i have a little chuckle every time, i might have to actually say it next time lol
Don't do that to me!! Scared me for a couple of minutes.....These are my new clubs, i get what you are saying about the marketing angle, but as a customer I dont care, I've bought them to last me years, regardless of driver. I went to the shop wanting the Mizuno hot metal, and came out with these
@@jasonbednorz3360 Not been on the course yet, but going well on the range so far. I like them, nice and compact compared to a game improver iron, but enough power in them still. Plus nice and shiny!!!!
Collis Smith I’m in the Southeast USA, so we’re in full golfing season. To be fair, other than the mud from some extra rain, there’s not much time here that’s not golf season. May get too cold for a day or two here or there in winter, but give it a few days, and it’ll be warm enough again. Haha! I love the finish on them.
Good vid, as always..... As for the name- they could call it "Snotballs", I personally wouldn't care. If it improves my game, the name doesn't faze me personally.... But, conversely, I'm also not in a financial position to go out and buy new clubs every few years. Last season I JUST upgraded from Ping I3 irons to a new(er) set of Wilson C200 irons.
Totally agree with you on this one James, I have never understood or liked the Callaway & TaylorMade thing of bringing out a range of Irons to line up with their new Driver release. For me it almost makes the Irons seem like they are an add-on and aren't worthy of an identity of their own, particularly as they are very similar to their existing Irons. But I suppose that we should be thankful that they don't come out with a Mavrik or SIM set of Wedges and Putters.
As a high handicapper (22 ) I bought Mavrik max irons, absolutely love them, lovely high flight, much longer than my Ping G30 irons, and very forgiving Huge improvement in my accuracy and game in general, the short irons in particulsr are stunning.
Don't understand your issue with the name and marketing, if you want a new driver, buy a new driver it doesn't mean you have to change your irons. I play an Aeroburner driver, TM M4 3 and 4 hybrids, Cleveland Turbo Launcher 5 and 6, TM RSi 7,8,9,P irons, Sub 70 wedges. A mixed bag, playing off 6, whatever works! I'd hit it with my umbrella if I thought it would lower my score.
So I am confused, you really like the club, goes distances you are comfortable with, could use a little more spin in them, but what really upsets you is the name? LOL......... If so, I get it, you want more differentiation in type of club, but also how they are named. You don't like the "family name". Mavrik, stuck on 20 different products. I completely understand that! Saves Callaway tons of money in advertising with one name to advertise, but makes it less obvious what players the different clubs are for.
This is the only video that made me feel like they might be playable for me. Coming from JPX 900 Tours, the 4 and 5 irons are just getting harder to hit. I wanted to find a set that might be just a bit easier to hit in the long irons. Now that these are well priced for used sets, it might be doable to find something else suitable for the short irons. These won't blend with the JPX's at all. I wonder how these compare to similar newer variations.
I am a bit confused. Calloway is a bit brassy in its model naming. If Calloway was a car company they would sell the "Zippy Fast" sports car, the "Large Muscles" pickup truck and the "Little Pokey" compact car. You mentioned the frequent changes of drivers and that irons should not change so frequently. So is that the issue - "forcing" players to keep changing irons with every driver change? Like I said, I was left a bit confused.
Appreciate the honesty, and I agree. To me, the naming may be a bit lazy. People need to hear a few of those tidbits though. Irons should last quite a few years in your bag and words like "pro" and "tour" are vastly overused! (Ahem...Circle T coughcough) I will say that after hitting these, though, I don't see the need to replace my Rogues or even my old Burners. Long as sin to be sure.
Ok, so what should I buy? I was off 11, now 13. Fairly switched on, but where do i start? My pro has Cobra or/and Mizuno, so he'll push them., but how do I pick which brand/make is best for me? Impossible question, so the name really doesn't matter. I'm just confused as to what I should get. Over the last 15 years I've used Cleveland and had 3 or 4 different sets, current 588 MTs. Where on earth do you start?
James, you are now playing the Mizuno MP20; worse than being an iron linked to a range including driver your irons include the year. Surely in 2021/22/23 your irons will obviously be as out-of-date as Mavirk, SIM etc irons when they get super-ceded.
The video title should be something like "Why do they do this?" Not sure I agree with your use of the phrase "they're going to be outdated" here, though. If they are fantastic now, and jammed with tech, then they will still be fantastic and jammed with tech in two or five years time. Where does outdated come into it?
Callaway needs to upgrade this line of irons… I never hit these irons because I couldn’t get over the look. But they are no different than the XR pro, rogue Pro. Step up callaway.
Pretty much every reviewer comments how strong lofted irons like these are but truth be told 7 iron lofts in the 30 to 32 degree range have been the case for this type of iron for so many years now that these are just the normal loft for their category. And they are nothing compared to the distance iron category and their 27 degree seven irons! Heck, even Titleist has gotten crazy with the T400 at 26 degrees for a seven iron! But as far as the name goes, I don't care in the slightest. If a product works for me I use it. Mavrik, Goose, Dr. Stinkinheim's Donut Blaster 300, call it what you want and if it performs I'll use it. We're talking about golf clubs here people, not baby names. Haven't hit the Pro yet but am looking forward to it once the golf shops reopen. The courses are still open but any places around here to get a proper test drive on new gear are closed for a while. Understandable though.
I bought these today and the maverick driver. I went in wanting Ping G710 aftrt watching your reviews of them but these played heaps better even with my 14 handicap. (No criticism of you there, they just maybe suited my swing better and felt amazing) I find it funny you worry about the name making the clubs outdated?? So you could keep a set for 5 years if they had a different name to the driver??? When you update the driver in 12 months time it will then have a different name and possibly brand! So what's the problem? Most people that care about this will know how old any set of irons are by the name, whether there was a driver by same name or not won't they?
Agree with you on this. Don't want to see too much "marketing" on my irons. Can't stand the name 'Mavrik' either. It puts me off buying the driver too. The irons actually looks really good, though.
I have the same problem with the term "Game improvement irons!"......they are just hit longer irons!....If you gave them to Tiger Woods would his game improve?....I don't think so.
I don't really agree with this video. I just bought these irons and I think they're great. I play off a 5 hdcp, so this kind of category is good for me - clubs I can work but with forgiveness! Accuracy so far is definitely improved, with bad shots not that far behind, and on target. I don't care about a name, if they work, they work.
the name does put me off and it's certainly plastered on there. with so many models, you've got to have a differentiating name, i suppose, but this one seems like a discount iron name.
Callaway has done the name thing forever . Steelhead, Steelhead Pro, Steelhead X-16 etc. Matched the name of the Steelhead driver back in the day ...... Marketing baby!
I might play them a year or so from now, when they'll cost half or less what they cost now. The technology of these clubs won't get worse even as Callaway says their then current clubs are "new and improved." IMHO, it's pure vanity for any 10+ index golfer to spend $1000 on irons. For example, I'm an honest 14.8 and I'm playing a set of Callaway X-14s, 4I through SW, with the original optional OEM Rifle Constant Weight shafts that I got, like new last year for $108 from Global Golf online. You don't have to go that old, but you get the idea. The X-14s were Golf Digest Gold when new and have an MPF (Maltby Playability Factor) of just under 1000. Has the technology they were built with gotten any worse lately? Not really.
James your content is great and I have been a fan for a long time, but you need to spend less time asking people to like and subscribe. It can take 5 seconds at the end of the video, people will subscribe if they like the content, not because you ask.
I think they are just marketing them as Mavrik to those out there that like to have everything matching, from driver, to fairway, to hybrids, to irons, to even the bag. I was like that when I had all M2 including the matching staff bag. Now I’ve got a Titliest bag, M3 driver and 3 wood, M2 hybrids, P790 irons and MG wedges.
Titleist is the only company that has gotten this right. I totally agree naming your irons and drivers the same makes me feel like it’s “this year’s gimmick” This is how the ap1/ap2 tmb cb have always done so well imo A lot of club junkies feel When you get the beat years driver and have the previous years matching irons they need to upgrade those too. I think the people who play these style of irons are all people who fall for the “new tech” speech every year thinking it will improve their game
Not big on Callaway much nowadays. Try testing the new Wilson D7 forge irons. The new Tour Edge Exotics EXS Irons as well. Both companies are based outside of Chicago.
Very similar to Cobra Speedzone irons but with more offset and few deg less loft. I dont like a massive offset so I went with the Speedzones which are fantastic compared to my dads 50 yr old Palmer blades I've used last 15+ years.
Great video James, maverik Pro and forgiveness. Your a pro and certainly need all the forgiveness you can get 😂. Joking apart, people aren't thrown by names anymore. It's all about marketing. Buy them if you like them, keep them 5 years. Happy days 👍
who cares i have different brand of irons to my woods just a sales gimmick by club manufacturers use what ever helps you the most. have purchased a set of call away maverick irons just a few weeks ago
With iron lofts being so low should we just ditch the traditional numbers of clubs and call your driver number 1, your fairway number 2, hybrid or second fairway number 3 and then into the irons starting at 4?Will help stop people overfilling the top end of the bag, but right now the iron lofts are so daft they couldn’t even make a useable 1 iron as it would be about 6 degrees.
Taylormade and Callaway and cobra all gave sketchy flimsy names to their product , it's too much marketing for me , I'm glad to be playing titleist Mizuno and ping
James. Maybe that's there plan. Get you to buy the new irons with the same name as the driver when it comes out next and every year. I think next years are being called 'Goose'. Which is exactly what people will be if they fall for it.
"pro" means it has the smallest head, and probably has the least forgiveness? who knows? one thing for sure, it's all aimed at sales, sales, profit, profit. go figure.....
Agree on your general point. I'm tempted to buy these irons, but I probably won't... when the iron range name matches all the woods, etc., it starts to feel like I'm playing a rental set or a store box set or something...
