On a recent black bear hunting trip, in northern BC, I wounded a bear and had to track him. If it wasnt for some planning and thinking ahead, this hunt could of turned out very bad for me.

You are a real green horn knuckle head telling the wild bar room drunks story bears won't blead by being shot ! I have 30 years of guiding clients for Alaskan Brown bear and Grizzly hunts and every bear we had to go look for bleed like a main blood vain was cute and often we find organ parts or parts of flesh and bone lost also. Then you are unfamiliar with your gun and try to shoot with safety on! Never come to Alaska then hire a guide to hunt the dangerous bears of Alaska because I really don't like putting my life in the line for stupid clients who are like you.

No they sure don't. The camera doesn't do it justice either. The camera is a wide angle lense so everything looks further away. They also don't know how fast a bear can actually move.

As I watched this , my buddy is sitting in a tree stand about 120 miles from anchorage, waiting for a big brown bear. It's 10:37 Alaska time and partly sunny? Partly cloudy?. It will get darker but not full dark in a couple hrs or so.

Your exercise of caution denotes a level of skill and knowledge of self preservation. A wounded animal with the ability to turn the tables on a hunter is a very dangerous situation not to be taken lightly. When you are alone like that there is nobody else going to keep you alive. A hunter has to draw on his knowledge and experience and the experience of others who have been in the same situation. If he is smart he will use all of that and live to tell stories to his friends and family .

You said one day your luck might run out. To help avoid that I would focus on taking a better shot. The shot looked rather long to me. I just wonder if you weren’t prepared to make a better shot than you did.

With bears their vitals are a bit further back then other animals. You shoot for the middle of the body but when I shot, he was slightly quartered so I only got one lung.

Well as a born and bred BC country boy myself, I have to say that would have taken some courage to do. Never hunted bear but growing up in the country about 3-4 hours south of you I have seen my fair share. Bears are fine when you can see them and defend yourself. A whole different matter when you can't see it and it's bloody wounded. Definitely not an experience I envy. Glad it all turned out in the end.

You need a large breed tracking dog, let the dog find the wounded bear, you’re more valuable than any dog. Nice bear, it takes a lot of balls to poke around the bush for a wounded bear.

I won't make my dog do anything I wouldn't do. I left my dogs in the truck for a reason on this hunt. I will never put one of their lives intentionally into danger but I just have a different view on my dogs. I'm not against it but I won't make my dogs do that.

I keep the barrel off the floor. The bolt handle kind of digs in to the center console and keeps it in place. It keeps the end of the barrel usually 4 to 6 inches from the floor.

Ya the big barrels of random junk and rotten beavers hanging in trees doesn't appeal to me. It has its advantages but most bait sites look disgusting. If it was legal to bait here, I would just use whole oats. That's like crack to bears.

Hate lazy hunters that road hunt, you should worry about getting closer instead of shooting a mile away-- smarten up use your legs-- some hunters give real hunters a bad name-- get closer you wouldn't have a wounded bear.

@user-dk2zx1to4m
@user-dk2zx1to4m Месяц назад
I think Sheldon was referring to how it planned to jump on him or ambush him, that was rather evident. He was tracking a wounded bear in pretty thick cover. If you don't see the bear before it sees you, you might pretty well walk right on top of it. But if that happened the bear would probably give Sheldon a big lick and run away.
@tolt1776
@tolt1776 Месяц назад
@user-dk2zx1to4m I guess I couldn't see any of that from the footage. Also, he never "tracked it" he went to where he thought it was.
@mtman2
@mtman2 Месяц назад
@@tolt1776 Yes he indeed did track it to when he heard a loud crack then smartly circled around above where that was and went right to it from a safer position that was easir to see from = very wise move...!

@tolt1776 Месяц назад
@mtman2 that's not tracking. I've "tracked" wounded bears and that involves following a blood trail. He did not. Tell me more though, because I'm definitely not listening 😅🤣 if you call that tracking you ain't a hunter.

In the first three and a half minutes of the video, he talks about how the wind is at his back and the bear will have him pretty well "pinned". This means the bear has winded him. Another way to put it is, the wind was blowing his human scent towards the bear. So the bear would have already smelled him and known he was there.

DavidBurns@ Always a negative smart mouth that trys to impress knowledge that we all know to begin with , yet you feel this desperate need to state the obvious with disregard that everyone hunts with their own style. That being said try being a person that encourages instead of discouraging. Who likes a smart ass? Just slaps of kind hunter you are . Asshole kind . Always have to try outshine everyone. Take a break . It's unbecoming

Yes, as far as your little speech as to why you hunt...... The modern World is definitely turning against killing animals. I do not hunt anymore, but that is because I am old now. I am pretty sure I would still knock over the odd dear for the freezer if I could. I think the truth is .......Nobody "needs" to kill animals, it is a "sport" for most hunters. I mean, nobody will starve if you do not kill animals. Not a criticism, just a fact... Cheers..............
@mtman2
@mtman2 Месяц назад
No-> Wildlife management requires hunting, trapping and sometimes culling, so no it is necessary and no most hunt for the healthy meat tho enjoy "the hunt" likely for having mastered the challenge, exercise and the art of it...! Nothing against vegans but hunting is as natural as breathing to put food on the table AND is a sport...!
